New “Affordable Seychelles” tourism campaign hits London underground

                Sep 30, 2013

As the cold weather gets underway in the United Kingdom, commuters in London will be able to indulge in the warmth and natural beauty that is the Seychelles islands, as depicted by the new posters that will grace the city next week.

The Seychelles Tourist Office in UK is starting a new “Affordable Seychelles” campaign on Monday, September 23, in a bid to reach commuters who go through the London underground.

Posters carrying the “Luxury within reach” message will be displayed in 81 stations in London and the Southeast of the UK, reaching out to a mix of commuters who use the tube daily. Of these stations, 42 are considered major, 3 premier, and the remaining 36 are standard sites.

The poster of a Coco-de-mer nut, which is unique to Seychelles and grows in the UNESCO World Heritage Site on the island of Praslin, will carry the message with a number of photos depicting the undeniably beautiful weather and idyllic beaches on one side of the nut. The other half of the nut remains bare and in its natural state.

The Seychelles Tourist Office said it had gone for a unique “asset” to showcase the destination, because it wanted to move away from what its competitors are doing, and that is selling their beach only and not putting emphasis on things that are unique and would draw attention to their product.

“Seychelles is primarily known for its spectacular beaches, but we also want potential visitors to know about the multitude of our treasures, our national heritage, which will entice them more to visit our islands,” said the manager for the Seychelles Tourist Office, Tinaz Wadia.

Ms. Wadia said she was positive that the campaign will further increase the visibility of the destination in highlighting to the consumers that “Seychelles is indeed affordable and within reach.”

“The ‘Luxury within reach’ tagline will depict another side of Seychelles that people are unaware of and deemed elusive – highlighting that one can afford luxury in Seychelles on an affordable budget. Despite being an exclusive destination, Seychelles also caters very largely to those on smaller budgets and who are looking for the authentic Seychelles experience,” said Ms. Wadia.

The campaign will run for 2 weeks and will be backed up with an online campaign which includes websites for publications like The Mail, Standard, Metro, and Independent.

Bates JPW Creative, the company running the campaign on behalf of Seychelles, said it is delighted to be representing such a luxurious destination.

“We hope to entice people to the wonderful world of the Seychelles islands by showcasing their unique assets whilst also acknowledging that it is an ‘affordable travel experience,’” said Fleur McNally, Business Development Director at Bates JPW Creative.

World Tourism Day marked by special arrival ceremony in Seychelles

                Sep 28, 2013

To mark World Tourism Day this year, the Seychelles Principal Secretary for Tourism, Anne Lafortune, accompanied by representatives from the Seychelles Tourism Board, arrived bright and early at the Seychelles International Airport at Pointe Larue to give those who landed on the first flight a special welcome.

The visitors who had just landed from Dubai – although a bit tired – were pleasantly surprised to receive a frangipani flower garland and a copy of SeyGo. SeyGo is a free publication handed to visitors at the airport containing a map, useful numbers to call while in the country, as well as a host of activities and sites to see.

The Seychelles Tourism Board said that the special welcome at the airport was important as this was the organization’s way of thanking the visitors for choosing the Seychelles as their holiday destination.

It is for this reason that everyone concerned arrived at Pointe Larue bright and early – to show their appreciation and give them a glimpse of the Seychellois trademark warm hospitality.

Local duo Felix Lawen and Channel Kilindo were also at the airport bright and early serenading the visitors while they received their gifts.

To recall, this year’s theme chosen to mark World Tourism Day is Tourism and Water: Protecting Our Common Future. The day is one that is very important to the local tourism industry - a pillar of the country’s economy.

INDIAN OCEAN PIRACY

Seychelles takes maritime security precautions to the next level

BY DR. WOLFGANG H. THOME, ETN CORRESPONDENT, AFRICA | SEP 28, 2013

When some years ago, during an interview in his office, the Seychelles Minister for Home Affairs and Transport, at the time also holding the Environment and Energy portfolios, Joel Morgan made it plain that his country viewed any pirate attack on ships in their economic exclusion zone as a clear and present danger to the security of his country, many sat up and took notice how the Seychelles were against main stream opinion advocating armed responses and arming ships traversing her waters. Several successful rescue missions later, during which only one hostage was slightly injured, the world apparently had finally wised up and the international maritime community has now also made moves towards having armed guards on high value cruise liners, oil tankers and container ships, though none has yet reached the level of the Seychelles, which again has taken the lead again.

Information from Mahe confirmed that all six ships belonging to the Seychelles Petroleum Company, are now protected by the Seychelles Vessels Protection Detachment, which operates under the auspices of the Ministry of Home Affairs as a special security unit.

According to a report from Victoria a formal demonstration of the skills intense training gave to the crews on board such ships took place earlier in the week, with a mock attack being staged and successfully repelled by the armed guards on the ship. The Seychelles depend on the timely arrival of fuel to propel thermal power stations and keep vehicles, ships and aircraft supplied with diesel, petrol and JetA1 aviation fuel, and the security of the fleet of tankers is paramount with national security overall. Officials reportedly commented that threat levels on the open ocean are still high and having armed security on board now, and the crews trained in emergency responses, has vastly improved the safety of such ships when sailing to and from the main port of Victoria.

International cruise lines too have started to come back to the Seychelles, and in fact are being encouraged by the newly launched Vanilla Island Organization to set up inter island cruises connecting the various members like Seychelles, Mauritius, Madagascar, Mayotte, Comoros, Reunion and the more recent addition of the Maldives, and secure and safe operations are a mandatory requirement to attract passengers to sail across the Indian Ocean with them similar as done in the Caribbean.

‘Cruise traffic is very important for the Seychelles. We proposed that international cruise lines establish itineraries around the Vanilla Islands. But there is also the market for yachts and large sailing ships which so often in the past visited us. During the peak of the Somali piracy problem, only a very few yachts came to visit and when one yacht was hijacked after leaving from Victoria it came to almost a standstill. Now that the international coalition naval forces have restored law and order on the high seas Seychelles again can welcome yachtsmen from everywhere. Our government’s move to arm our vessels is therefore welcome and if international cruise ships need such assistance the Seychelles is willing to assist’ said a regular source when passing the information on earlier yesterday. Seychelles, again taking the lead and others will undoubtedly follow, sooner or later.

Seychelles Tourism Minister interviewed on Tourismes.TV during Top Resa 2013

                Sep 28, 2013

Minister Alain St.Ange, the Minister of Tourism and Culture of the Seychelles, was one of the dignitaries at the Top Resa Tourism Trade Fair in France to be invited to appear on Tourismes.TV for a live interview that was centered primarily on how Seychelles was faring with its tourism industry under the challenging times.

The Minister from Seychelles was also questioned on the island's sustainable tourism label they launched just over a year ago and on their successes in having not only staged an annual carnival in the Indian Ocean, but in having been able to have that event listed on the Calendar of Events on the world stage.

On the question of the Seychelles sustainable tourism label, Minister Alain St.Ange explained that it was important for everyone in Seychelles to be counted as being good custodians of the natural exceptional beauty with which the Seychelles has been blessed. The time was right for the private sector to also embrace this drive and to do what it felt possible in the protection of what the islands have. "To achieve this we need to be also putting into place business operation practices that all bring positive results. Our Hotels and Resorts are being encouraged to help the country by helping themselves, and in so doing consolidate the tourism industry of the Seychelles for the long term" Minister St.Ange of the Seychelles said on Tourismes.TV

On the entry into the world of events by Seychelles, the Minister said that even though the islands have the best in sun, sea and sand holidays these unique selling points are not enough anymore to keep a tourism destination relevant. "We know that our clean white sandy beaches are attractive, we know that our warm, clean and clear turquoise blue seas remain inviting and we know that our positioning so close to the Equator giving us a weather pattern and the name of the destination with perpetual summer can really be a sought after experience but all these USPs, our unique selling points, our friends from the international press have written and rewritten about them over and over again. We needed to move to remain relevant and this is why we decided to tap into the diverse cultural assets of our islands. Our Culture and our People have become the base for our tourism drive. Through our cultural events our visitors meet our people and that brings to life the personalized tourism strategy we believe in. In October we are staging the 28th edition of our annual Festival Kreol and during the last weekend of April we stage the region's annual carnival of carnivals, the Carnaval International de Victoria where all the best and known carnivals of the world parade together followed by cultural troupes from the Community of Nations in an explosion of cultural diversity, of color and of music. Seychelles can stage these activities because we are known as a safe and friendly destination" Minister Alain St.Ange said.

Tourismes.TV has been the Official Web TV for IFTM Top Resa, the Tourism Trade Fair of France for the 5th consecutive year. The have more than 1700 quality videos on line that remain accessible free of charge, and they also produce a weekly Trade TV Magazine with latest industry news and updates.

Tourismes.TV currently holds a record for 100,000 videos viewed per month and their video reports, their interviews and news on events has ensured that Tourismes.TV remains listed as the first in French Web.TV for tourists and potential holiday makers.

Seychelles Hospitality & Tourism Association sends message for World Tourism Day

                Sep 28, 2013

On the occasion of the forthcoming World Tourism Day, Friday, September 27, the Chairman of the Seychelles Hospitality and Tourism Association, Mr. John Stravens, has issued a message to all the association members to mark this day.

This year’s theme designated by the UNWTO is “Tourism and Water: Protecting our Common Future.”

“This year’s Tourism Day theme, ‘Tourism and Water: Protecting our common future,’ is fitting for Seychelles as water represents two important facets of our tourism industry. A major component that Seychelles has to offer to its visitors is partly water! We are surrounded by plenty of it and major activities such as sailing, fishing, diving are centered in and around water. This is a positive element to our tourism industry, and we ought to preserve and protect our seas – our livelihood,” Mr. Stravens said.

“On the other hand, there is a scarcity in terms of potable water, which is a pertinent issue that needs to be addressed. We encourage all our members to be conscious of the need to save this precious resource. Proper rain harvesting and water-saving methods should be the prime objective of hotel establishments in our efforts to mitigate the adverse effects of water shortage,” he continued.

It is to be noted that Minister Alain St.Ange, our Seychelles Minister for Tourism & Culture, will be delivering a message together with the UNWTO Secretary General Dr. Taleb Rifai on Friday. This will no doubt help position Seychelles further on the world tourism map.

Seychelles honored with African Development Excellence Award in New York

                Sep 27, 2013

Seychelles President James Michel has been conferred with the “African Development Excellence Award” during the African Investment and Development Awards Ceremony held in New York to coincide with the holding of the United Nations General Assembly.

The award, presented yesterday evening, was collected by Vice President Danny Faure on behalf of President Michel and the people of Seychelles.

The award was presented by Dr. Ken Giami, the CEO of African Leadership Magazine and founder of the Centre for Economic and Leadership Development, an NGO with consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

President Michel conveyed the following message through the Vice President on the occasion of the ceremony:

"I am deeply honored to receive the African Development Excellence award. I accept it on behalf of the people of Seychelles and I dedicate it to them. I consider the con ferment of this prestigious award as recognition of our achievements as one of the best governed countries in Africa, stemming from the hard work and commitment we have put in a human centered approach to development."

In his keynote remarks on the occasion of the ceremony, the Vice President shared some of Seychelles’ experiences in terms of development and economic reforms that helped transform the Seychelles economy in 2008. He also highlighted Seychelles confidence in the power of intra-African investment as a driver of development. He noted the positive trends in terms of African tourism and stated that Seychelles is committed towards enhancing Africa's potential in terms of tourism development through the African Union.

In terms of future perspectives, the Vice President stressed that sustainable development must be embraced as an opportunity for African nations. He cited renewable energy and the potential of the blue economy as being catalysts for the development of Seychelles as well as the wider region.

The Vice President also stated that while Seychelles was a small state, it had shown that it could make a big contribution, and was thus also positioning itself for a bid for a non-permanent seat of the UN Security Council for the year 2017- 2018:

"While we are a small nation, we believe that all voices count. Our experiences in establishing viable maritime security provides a template for wider international cooperation in stabilizing our region, and we look forward to strengthening our contribution through this bid."

The Vice President said that Seychelles small size could be a source of strength rather than weakness, and that Seychelles was determined to ensure this was the case.

"We are the smallest nation in Africa, but we are determined to ensure that our small size is not a weakness but a strength. Our flexibility, our unity of purpose, and our development of a harmonious and united society have given us tools that have allowed us to continue to progress and ensure that we sustain the political will for often difficult governance decisions."

Ethiopian Airlines plans more aggressive approach for their Seychelles route

Sep 26, 2013

The Top Resa tourism trade fair in Paris was the opportunity for Gashaw Mekonnen, the new GM of Ethiopian Airlines, based in France, to meet Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, and Bernadette Willemin, the Seychelles Tourism Board's Director for Europe, and discuss a more aggressive approach for the airline when looking at the Seychelles.

Mr. Mekonnen was accompanied for his meeting by Mr. Christophe Labiche, the Head of Product at Ethiopian Airlines France.

The meeting in Paris reviewed the approach in place by the Seychelles Tourism Board Offices in making the Ethiopian Airlines route to Seychelles more known among tour operators and travel agents.

The Seychelles Minister welcomed the new drive by Ethiopian Airlines and assured Mr. Mekonnen the full cooperation of the Seychelles Tourism Board Offices.

Seychelles calls for activism in final push towards Millennium Development Goals

Sep 26, 2013

Following the finalization of Seychelles' 3rd Millennium Development Goals report, Vice President Danny Faure has addressed the special event organized by the President of the United Nations General Assembly to follow up efforts made towards achieving the MDGs, calling for activism at the national and global level.

The Vice President spoke at a special roundtable event organized, and highlighted Seychelles' positive record in achieving the Seychelles Millennium Development Goals (MDG).

"We have sought to strengthen 'people-centered development' as a means of achieving these goals, and have sought, where possible, to go beyond the expectations of both our people and the international community,” he said.

The Vice President also stressed, however, that Small Island States such as Seychelles are challenged by an often less than conducive framework for their specific development needs:

"We should not underestimate the risk of losing what we have already achieved under the MDGs. Small Island Developing States in particular have been successful in rapidly multiplying the positives of reaching the MDGs but face a struggle towards mobilizing the right support to sustain this momentum. Many are faced with a development paradox - successful implementation of development objectives including the MDGs has been followed by reduced access to affordable and predictable development mechanisms," the Vice President added.

The Vice President also called for a “new sense of activism” to ensure that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) meet the requirements of development for the world. He emphasized the importance of the Green Economy and also the Blue Economy, underlining that "to sustain our planet, we must better engage with our oceans as spaces for connection and development rather than spaces for exploitation.”

The Vice President was representing Seychelles President James Michel at the event held in the margins of the United Nations General Assembly opened on Tuesday.

During the UNGA gathering in New York, Vice President Faure has also attended the opening reception organized by President Barack Obama of the host country, the United States.

Canada and Seychelles winner of Tourmag Tourism Awards for 2013

                Sep 26, 2013

Jean Da Luz and his son and partner Fabien Da Luz of the known and respected TourMag.com hosted hundreds of tourism professionals in the Paris VIP Room to announce the winners of the Tourism Awards for 2013.

This award ceremony coincided with the annual Top Resa Tourism Trade Fair bringing again the world of tourism to Paris.

Expectations and tension filled the packed room as Fabien Da Luz announced the nominations for the first category for the evening which was destination offices. The winners voted by the tourism professionals of France went to Canada and Seychelles.

It was a proud Bernadette Willemin, the Seychelles Tourism Board Director for Europe, who went on stage to receive the trophy from Jean Da Luz to the applause of everyone present.

Speaking after the award ceremony, Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, who was leading the Seychelles delegation to Top Resa 2013, said that he was proud to see a Seychelloise pull the trophy of Best Tour Manager 2013. "We are honored that a respected tourism publication has today announced that Seychelles is a joint winner of the Best Tourism Office Manager Award. On behalf of the government of Seychelles, I say congratulations to our Bernadette Willemin. She has done Seychelles and the people of Seychelles proud,” Minister St.Ange said.

Seychelles is one tourism destination posting their own tourism professionals to manage their Tourism Board Offices in their key tourism markets. Bernadette Willemin, a born and bred Seychelloise, was promoted a couple of years ago from being the France Manager to the position of Director for Europe.

"Tourism is a people's industry, and we needed to ensure that our people play their rightful place everywhere possible. Our managers in our Tourism Board Offices must showcase who we are, and no one can better do that than one of us," said the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture in Paris.

Tourism is the key industry of the mid-ocean tropical islands of the Seychelles, and they have shown that their industry is working even when their key markets are experiencing economic difficulties. To date, on a year-to-year basis as of the month of September, Seychelles is recording a 13% increase in visitor arrival numbers.

Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands hold successful press conference at French tourism fair

Sep 25, 2013

It was with a lot of emotion and happiness that representatives of the Indian Ocean Vanilla islands Organization met with the gathered international press at the La Reunion Stand at the 2013 Top Resa French tourism trade fair to show their resolve in bringing to the world the latest tourism destination.

It was Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, who is the sitting President of the Vanilla Islands, who addressed the gathered members of the press. Minister St.Ange gave a rundown on decisions taken at the last Ministerial Meeting of the organization that took place on La Reunion Island recently. He explained that the Vanilla islands was now an organization in its own right and a tourism region with a difference. "We now have a budget with which to operate, we now have a CEO to manage the affairs of the organization, we are now working on a plan of action, and we are set to sell our region as the latest tourism region for tour operators and travel agents to promote," Minister Alain St.Ange said.

The Seychelles Minister and President of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands also spoke about the desire to work with small human-sized cruise ship operators to launch a new cruise route that can be based in the Indian Ocean. He emphasized that the Vanilla Islands has real diversity in islands and cultures and also a unique “Whale Route” where annually Humpback whales descend to give birth. "It is a spectacle offered by Mother Nature, but it can be seen at close proximity on the Vanilla Islands Whale Route. On this Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands cruise ship route, the UNESCO Site of Aldabra Atoll of the Seychelles could be experienced as was the African Banks, the Robinson Crusoe island of the Seychelles where Man Friday would be the crew from the cruise ship for a picnic on a deserted island. Seychelles also has in the sooty bird-laying season a nature extravaganza where millions of birds land on some of our islands to lay their eggs. These and all the other unique attractions of the region are set to be the new cruise route with a difference," Minister St.Ange said.

President Didier Robert, the President of the Regional Council of La Reunion, also spoke at the press conference highlighting that the organization was now a group of seven islands, namely the Seychelles, La Reunion, Madagascar, Mauritius, Comoros, Mayotte, and Maldives. He said that the recent UNWTO tourism meeting held in La Reunion had helped to propel the regional organization to new heights and that he was ready as France in the Indian Ocean to ensure that the Vanilla Islands find their rightful place in the world of tourism.

When he was answering questions from the many press members gathered, Alain St.Ange, in his capacity of President of the Vanilla Islands, said that the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands were beyond politics. "We are a tourism body, and this we shall remain. Tourism is beyond politics, and we want this to remain so," Minister St.Ange said.

World Tourism Day 2013: Message from the Seychelles Minister for Tourism

                Sep 25, 2013

Seychelles Minister for Tourism issues message for Tourism Day 2013:

As the Community of Nations joins together to mark Tourism Day 2013, it is important for Seychelles, a country whose economy remains dependent on that very industry, to reflect on our successes to date and to take note of the challenges ahead.

The United Nation's World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is celebrating the 2013 Tourism Day around the theme "Tourism & Water: Protecting our Common Future." This theme is especially relevant for Seychelles because as mid-ocean islands, water is a valuable asset and resource. We continue to face the challenge of producing a 365-day uninterupted supply of water that is our population's lifeline and one of tourism's most precious resources.

As stated by the UNWTO, tourism remains the largest economic sector, and it is, therefore, our responsibility to take a leadership role and ensure that companies invest in adequate water management throughout the value chain.

As we celebrate 2013 World Tourism Day, let us reflect on the importance of tourism for our country. When tourism is working, every business man and woman in Seychelles feels the positive effects of that vibrant industry. Every Seychellois must by now know, or they should know, that they also reap directly or indirectly the benefits of a successful tourism industry, and this is why we should use World Tourism Day 2013 to remind everyone not to saw through the branch we are all seated upon.

This was the second time that the Ministers have met, and they discussed, among other matters, the recent UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organization) meeting on Sustainable Development in Tourism that was held on the French Island of La Reunion in the Indian Ocean.

Minister Pinel of France had been unable to travel to La Reunion due to Parliamentary Sittings in France but had followed the meeting from afar. The two Ministers also discussed the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands Organization after being recognized by Dr. Taleb Rifai, the Secretary General of the UNWTO, at the La Reunion meeting. Minister Alain St.Ange of the Seychelles is the sitting President of the Vanilla Islands. The huge press coverage received by the last Ministerial Meeting of the Vanilla Islands was also discussed.

Minister for Tourism and Culture, Mr. Alain St.Ange, is leading the Seychelles delegation, and he is being accompanied by the Tourism Board's European Director, Mrs. Bernadette Willemin, and her team from the Paris Office, Ms. Sara Jupiter and Ms. Jennifer Dupuy, and members of the tourism private sector trade who are working with the Tourism Board for the continued consolidation of the French market. Seychelles tourism industry is one of collective effort

Sep 24, 2013

The tourism industry is one that requires collective effort, explained the Chief Executive of the Seychelles Tourism Board, Sherin Naiken. Miss Naiken was speaking at a special mass at the Ste. Therese Church at Plaisance- held as part of the activities to mark Tourism Week this year.

Seychelles Tourism Board staff as well as many others involved in the local tourism industry attended the lively mass presided by Father Louison Emerick Bissila Mbila, who is also running the Roman Catholic denomination of migrant and itinerant workers in Seychelles.

Hymns in Kiswahili, French, English, and Creole were sung to give praise for the many blessings showered on the industry, enabling its continual growth. Prayers were also said in Afrikaans and German among many other languages to ask for more blessings and the guidance needed for more progress.

Those involved in the industry also received a special blessing during the mass, providing them with the spiritual help to continue excelling in their chosen industry.

It was after the lively mass that the Seychelles Tourism Board Chief Executive, Sherin Naiken, addressed the faithful, who had come in large numbers to attend the special event.

“Often we hear people here refer to the expatriates working in the country as ‘them,’ when it should not be a ‘them’ and ‘us’ situation,” explained Miss Naiken.

“There is a very low level of unemployment in the country, and even if all those who currently find themselves unemployed were to work in the tourism industry, there would still be a huge void left to fill in the hotel industry,” added Miss Naiken.

She went on to say that the locals should be grateful to the expatriates working in the tourism industry as they are also contributing to its development.

The Principal Secretary for Tourism in the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Anne Lafortune, also addressed the crowd, reminding them that the attributes demanded of a good Christian were similar to that of a good worker in the industry.

“As a Christian a good attitude, patience, understanding, and honesty are required. The same is needed in a good worker in the industry in addition to a welcoming smile,” said Mrs. Lafortune.

With the good advice from both representatives from the local tourism authorities, the faithful then headed to the church hall for drinks, refreshments, and relaxed conversation.

Minister St.Ange (left)

Sep 24, 2013

Catherine Chane Kune, the Director of Culture and Sports in the island of La Reunion, has given her assurances that La Reunion Island will be present at Seychelles 28th edition of Festival Kreol on October 25-31, 2013.

On a working mission in the Seychelles islands to prepare a road map for the island's delegation and their participation in Festival Kreol, Mrs. Catherine Chane Kune and her two-member delegation met the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, Alain St.Ange, to gain his input and expectations on La Reunion Island’s contribution to Festival Kreol 2013.

Minister Alain St.Ange who headed the meeting together with Benjamine Rose, the Principal Secretary for Culture, and Miera Savy, Director of International Cooperation in the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, confirmed the proposed strong presence of La Reunion Island for the upcoming festival. He said that compared to previous years, this time the delegation will consist of four aspects of cooperation, namely culture, renewable energy, artisans, and commerce. Minister St.Ange claimed that the strong presence of a La Reunion delegation in Festival Kreol 2013 will give a further boost to the existing cooperation between France and Seychelles.

“We’ve made an appeal to La Reunion Island to be very present in this upcoming Festival Kreol for the simple reason that we wanted to give a new dynamism to this cooperation Seychelles-Reunion, the two sister islands with a strong cultural bond," Alain St.Ange, Minister for Tourism and Culture said.

Catherine Chane Kune, the Director of Culture and Sports in La Reunion, said that the meeting with Minister Alain St.Ange was an opportunity to take stock of what Seychelles expects from the La Reunion delegation participating in Festival Kreol 2013, and to take note of the new dynamism that Seychelles anticipates to bring in the festival itself. She said that La Reunion Island has always responded positively to the Seychelles invitation to take part in Festival Kreol.

“Today I believe that I can come out and openly say that La Reunion Island will be present for Festival Kreol 2013, and we will boost up our efforts to make our presence seen and heard. We will be in Seychelles alongside other Creole-speaking countries to make this edition of the Festival Kreol a resounding success," Catherine Chane Kune said.

Mrs. Chane Kune also explained that La Reunion Island’s participation in Festival Kreol was a point tabled by Minister St.Ange to President Didier Robert, the La Reunion President of the Regional Council, when they met in La Reunion recently.

Viewers in Estonia, Russia, and southern parts of Finland are soon to discover what the tropical islands of the Seychelles has to offer as a travel destination. This is through a special segment on “Travel with Me” that is being filmed in Seychelles.

“Travel with Me” is a travel program aired in that region, giving its viewers a detailed and entertaining account of the many places in the world they could travel to for their vacations.

In keeping with the Seychelles Tourism Board’s new policy of reaching out to new markets, a three-member media group from Estonia was recently in the country to capture on film the Seychelles’ unique beauty.

As the TV show is one that aims to educate and wow its audiences, the segment on Seychelles will definitely provide an extra oomph!

The crew consisting of Producer Tina Park, Presenter Andres Dvinjaninov, and Sound Supervisor Herlend Lukksepp, completed the initial filming work for the 25-minute-long documentary due to be aired soon.

Some 55,130 viewers watch the “Travel with Me” show in Estonia alone, where it is broadcasted every Saturday at 2005 hours.

Once the program is edited and prepared for broadcasting, the audience will be treated to a cooking demonstration of Creole cuisine which was filmed at Constance Ephelia & Lemuria Resorts, Coco De Mer Hotel, Hilton Northolme Hotel, Sunset Beach Hotel, the Beachcomber St. Anne Resort, and Le Domaine De L’Orangerie Resort.

Since the crew has filmed two travel shows while in Seychelles, interviews with the chefs and hotel managers will also feature.

No documentary about the Seychelles would be complete without a trip to the Vallee de Mai. Incidentally, the Estonian TV filming crew was also treated to a guided tour of the unique site. After gaining enough information about the flora of this unique nature reserve and UNWSCO World Heritage Site, “Travel with Me” viewers will also be given a crash course in turtle conservation.

Although the crew paid for their own airfares, it must be noted that the Estonian TV crew working in Seychelles is a collaboration of a host of partners including Le Domaine De L’Orangeraie resort of La Digue Island, Coco De Mer Hotel of Praslin Island, Sunset Beach Hotel of the main island of Mahe, Le Domaine De La Reserve of Praslin Island, The Wharf Hotel of Mahe Island, Saint Anne Island Resort, Hilton Seychelles Northolme Resort & Spa of Mahe, and La Plaine Saint Andre of Mahe.

Faithful Destination Management Company, Mason’s Travel, was also at hand to ensure the stay ran smoothly.

CARNAVAL INTERNATIONAL DE VICTORIA IN SEYCHELLES CONTINUES COOPERATION WITH DUESSELDORF, GERMANY

Helau from Duesseldorf to the Seychelles Carnival

Sep 23, 2013

Today Germany confirms that Dusseldorf Carnival will be participating in the Carnaval International de Victoria in Seychelles in April 2014.

Dr. Rolf Herpens, the Vice President of the Dusseldorf Carnival Committee, confirmed that the known and very popular Dusseldorf Carnival will be flying back to Seychelles for the 2014 edition of the Carnaval International de Victoria that will this year take place during the last weekend of the month of April.

For the first time in 2014, the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands Carnaval International de Victoria held in Seychelles will take place from April 25-27, 2014. The Seychelles Tourism Board moved the carnival from the month of February to April so that it does not clash with the traditional dates of carnivals around the world to enable the most known carnivals of the world to descend to Seychelles to be part of the carnival procession in Victoria. The change of dates also moves the event away from the Roman Catholic Lent period as a sign of respect to the Church in Seychelles.

Dr. Herpens, who met with Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, and Mrs. Sherin Naiken, the CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board, at the Minister's Offices at the National Conference Centre in Victoria confirmed that the decision had been taken for Germany to be present in the unique carnival of carnivals in Seychelles 2014. They were happy that the dates of the Seychelles carnival had been delayed as it previously clashed with the date of their own carnival.

Germany is today the second most important tourism market for Seychelles, and the good working relationship with the Dusseldorf Carnival is handled by Edith Hunzinger, the Seychelles Tourism Board Manager in Frankfurt. Dr. Herpens has also invited Seychelles to send a small delegation to showcase the beauty of Seychelles at their known carnival at the end of the month of February. "Dusseldorf will host the Seychelles delegation and help you make Germany dream of the beauty of your islands, especially as the carnival is held in the peak of winter."

Minister St.Ange has accepted the offer and will be preparing a promotional banner with a carnival delegation pictured on one of the beautiful beaches of Seychelles. "This banner will be the backdrop for the Seychelles delegation as they parade through the streets of Dusseldorf next February. As the carnival is broadcast live nationwide across Germany, we want to use the beauty of the Seychelles with our music to make our mark at the Dusseldorf Carnival," Minister St.Ange said.

SEYCHELLES - ISRAEL AND TOURISM

Israeli visitors experience special Creole hospitality as they land in Seychelles

Sep 22, 2013

“After travelling to Seychelles many times this is my second home! I love the Seychelles and I love coming to Seychelles,” said Tali Dative, Owner and General Manager of Medraft Spirit, after her flight from Israel landed in Seychelles.

The arrival of the Israeli visitors at the Seychelles International Airport, was a colorful and lively affair. The National Cultural Troupe from the Seychelles Ministry for Tourism and Culture was at the arrival lounge, gaily singing and performing traditional Seychellois music and dances at the delight of the visitors.

For some of the passengers of the landing in Seychelles this was their first time experiencing the bouncy and catchy sega, moutya dances – all performed in the colorful attires that have become the small group of islands in the Indian Ocean’s trademark as well as a good indicator of the people inhabiting this paradise’s characters.

In addition to the entertainment, the guests were also each handed a copy of the SeyGo publication, an indispensable free guide providing visitors with a map, vouchers, and the plethora of activities available to them during their stay in Seychelles.

The Seychelles Tourism Board and Mason’s Travel representatives were also at the airport to welcome this fresh group of visitors to Seychelles’ shores – occasionally joining in the festivities to give the visitors a further view of the joie de vivre found all over the island.

To recall earlier in March, the Medraft Spirit had landed its 25th flight into the country – all of which had been handled by local Destination Management Company, Mason’s Travels. Mason’s Travel is also the local ground-handling agent taking care of most accommodation, transfers, and excursions. Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, has welcomed the arrival of this latex large group of visitors from Israel saying that the diversifying policy of the island was working.

"We must continue to leave no stones unturned as we work to diversify our target markets. We need to continue to touch every niche market looking for a special holiday destination. Seychelles is this special destination, and we must all continue to say so everywhere we go. On behalf of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture we congratulate Mason's Travel for their continued efforts on the Israel Market," Minister St.Ange said.

Medraft Spirit is the only tour operator in Israel dealing with Seychelles on a permanent basis, providing two charters a year during their country’s holidays. Although the company also operates tours to Mauritius and Maldives, Seychelles has the highest percentage of visitors.

The relationship between the Medrift and Seychelles began in 2009, when they brought in a business group. Since then the company’s focus has shifted to FIT clients, who are in turn given the chance to sample some of the best tourism establishments in Seychelles such as Fregate, Maia, Denis Island, and Desroches Island.

SEYCHELLES TOURISM MINISTER OPENS TOURISM WEEK IN HIS VACATION PARADISE

Tourism week seen through the eyes of Alain St.Ange

Sep 22, 2013

In the presence of the main tourism professionals of Seychelles and friends of the island's tourism industry who had gathered at the Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Resort and Casino for the Seychelles Annual Tourism Ball, Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, delivered his address to officially declare Tourism Week 2013 opened.

Present at the function were the Seychelles Senior Minister, Designated Minister Vincent Meriton, Minister for Home Affairs and Transport Joel Morgan, the Minister responsible for Labor and Human Resource Development Idith Alexander, CEO of the Tourism Board Sherin Naiken, PS for Tourism Anne Lafortune, PS for Culture Benjamine Rose, and many of the island's senior civil servants and the local press.

Minister Alain St.Ange used the opportunity to review the happenings in the island's tourism industry. The Minister said:

"Ministers, Excellencies, Friends of the Tourism Industry,

“It is indeed a pleasure to address you once again at our annual Seychelles Tourism ball, which this year will also mark the opening of our tourism week. This event is unique by a thousand miles, because it is the only public/private sector social event aimed at opening avenues for dialogue through a social gathering. You are here because you believe in our tourism industry, you are here because you understand it, and you are here because you want to see it grow and you are not shy to say so.

“This year, I believe the theme chosen by the UNWTO - ‘Tourism and Water: Protecting our Common Future’ – enhances the work we as a nation are doing to further promote eco-friendly tourism practices in our industry. Water is crucial for the sustainable development of our tourism industry, and water will be a win for Seychelles if altogether we can better manage this precious resource.

“Excellencies, friends of the Seychelles tourism industry, now in the last quarter of 2013, Seychelles' tourism arrival figures are showing a 13% rise over last year as we continue to consolidate our traditional core European markets, while at the same time diversifying into new ones worldwide, such as neighboring Africa, the Middle East, the Americas, and the Far East.

“We are also developing new partnerships to ensure we remain accessible as a destination to our core markets, as well as our potential markets. Earlier this year in April 2013, Air Seychelles, now in equity partnership with Etihad, launched its inaugural flight to Hong Kong, and as of the month of November, another new airline partner, Sri Lankan Airlines, plans to introduce new direct services to Seychelles.

“The new service will operate initially twice a week and will connect the two Indian Ocean states directly. The routing is expected to be attractive to tour operators who could look to package more Indian Ocean countries together as Seychelles continues to push the idea of twin-hub holidays with partner destinations. Sri Lankan Airlines will be an added air connectivity to India, China, and more.

“This comes over and above our other partners, namely: Emirates, Condor, Kenya Airways, and Ethiopian Airlines. And we are hoping that early next year to welcome once again Air Austral and Air Madagascar to bring better air connectivity between our Indian Ocean Islands and beyond.

“Our efforts to ensure that we remain visible as a destination have not gone unnoticed. The awards we continue wining are testimony to that: these includes ADUTEI (Association of the Tourism Board in Italy), Best TV & Radio Program 2012, Best Honeymoon Destination (World Travel Fair China), Top Islands Destination (Guangzhou International Travel Fair), Best Emerging Destination (Travelling Daily - Tourism PR Company), and ROUTES Africa 2013 Best Destination Management Award, while its beaches have recently been ranked top in the world by CNN.

“Additionally, early this year Seychelles was also recognized for its visibility in the African region through the Travel and Tourism (T&T) Competitiveness report 2013, published by the World Economic Forum which is a vindication of efforts to push Seychelles' brand in the region as well as globally.

“Excellencies, friends of the Seychelles tourism industry,

“Seychelles has made its mark by remaining at the forefront of the Vanilla Islands initiative, the regional umbrella organization to promote the tourism of its member countries: Seychelles, Madagascar, La Reunion, Mauritius, Mayotte, Comores, and now the Maldives where I have just been re-elected as the body's President for a second mandate. Furthermore, Derek Savy, a qualified Seychellois, has been appointed as the organization’s Marketing Director – all moves that will greatly enhance our drive to grow the local tourism industry.

“Other successes that I wish to highlight is our attendance to the UNWTO General Assembly in Zambia and Zimbabwe at which our former CEO of The Seychelles Tourism Board, Elsia Grandcourt, was confirmed in her appointment as UNWTO Regional Director for Africa, an appointment that is a great source of pride for Seychelles. It is at this very UNWTO General Assembly that Seychelles got elected to sit on the UNWTO, the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s Executive Council. This should help keep Seychelles and the region in the forefront of world tourism.

“Other of our most recent achievements includes the inclusion in the ‘East-3-Route’ initiative. After a year-long process, we were finally admitted as a member of the ‘East-3-Route’ initiative that was originally a grouping of KwaZulu Natal of South Africa, Swaziland, and Mozambique, spearheaded personally by former President Nelson Mandela of South Africa, President Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique, and His Majesty the King of Swaziland, in 1998. Seychelles now joins as a proud new member to pursue the goals of promoting eco-tourism development, capitalizing on the region's exciting topographical landmarks and emphasizing the existing blend of cultural and historical heritage.

“We continue to take new approaches and make great strides to remain relevant in the fast-changing tourism market.

“In line with our policy of reaching out to partners in the region and beyond, last month we signed an MOU of cooperation in the field of tourism, opening up new avenues of collaboration across a broad spectrum of activities with South Africa. The same was done with Zambia but a month later.

“But all these achievements would have been impossible without the help of our partners locally and abroad, who have recognized the need for change and the need for innovation – and have continually worked with us to keep the tourism industry booming.

“Excellencies, friends of the Seychelles tourism industry,

“Using such platforms as our annual carnival, Seychelles continues to act as facilitator between the Vanilla Islands members in their attempt to further highlight the individual tourism assets of these western Indian Ocean islands, enhancing their appeal to regional travelers.

“As we continue to work on the development of our first sustainability label, we strive to optimize economic benefits for communities and contributing to the preservation of natural and cultural treasures.

“As you all know, I keep an open-door policy, a policy which enables me to keep abreast with developments in the industry at large. This also permits me to work in close partnership and take further whatever issues that arise so that we may come to a compromise that is beneficial to the growth of our industry.

“It is for this reason that I am appealing to all of you present today, you who are committed to see our tourism industry grow, and you who are not shy to show that you believe in the tourism industry, I am appealing to you to continue the good work we have already completed so far. Let us continue presenting a united front in order to nurture this vital industry, the industry that remains the pillar of our economy.

“With this I declare Tourism Week 2013 officially open, may you benefit immensely from it.

“I thank you all for joining us for the first event launching Tourism Week 2013."

Taking on the challenge of opening air connectivity within the Vanilla Islands

Sep 21, 2013

In his second year mandate as President of the Vanilla Islands, Alain St.Ange, who also holds the portfolio as the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, is engaging in the daunting task of increasing air connectivity within the islands of the Vanilla grouping and reducing the cost of travel between these Islands.

In an interview published by the magazine, “Ile en Ile” of La Reunion, Alain St.Ange did not fail to reiterate that the Vanilla Islands concept of unifying the tourism promotional campaigns for the islands of La Reunion, Madagascar, Comoros, Mayotte, Seychelles, Mauritius, and Maldives could only work when an effective direct air access framework between these Islands becomes a reality. The President of the Vanilla Islands reiterated that this remains a real challenge for the region's tourism industry.

The interview was compiled during the meeting held in La Reunion Island that was held from September 10-12 and was published on September 15 in time for use at the Top Resa Tourism Trade Fair in Paris. In his interview, the President of the Vanilla Islands talks about the recent success of the Vanilla Islands ministerial meeting and the admission of the grouping as a member of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

It is now months since Minister St.Ange has taken office as the President of the Vanilla Islands for a second term, and he persists with his thinking that the Vanilla Islands can only really become an important tourism destination of the Indian Ocean destination when an effective air connectivity is in place.

“When we announced that we had obtained the budget to run the Vanilla Islands Group, our intention was also spelled out that this money will allow us to accelerate projects aimed at making us an effective and relevant tourism region. One of the challenges we are still facing during my second mandate is to come out with ways and means on how to reduce tariffs between the Indian Ocean islands and at the same time increase air access between the Vanilla Islands. Then and only then will it be possible to create, not only a Vanilla Islands tourism destination, but also real trading opportunities in the region,” Alain St.Ange, President of Vanilla Islands, said.

As the latest member organization of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, the President of the Vanilla Island is now confident that more can now be done for the region.

Taleb Rifai, the Secretary General of UNWTO, made the announcement that the Vanilla Islands has become a member of the United Nations World Tourism Organization which has given the President of the Vanilla Islands a double responsibility. As a member on the UNWTO Executive Council, he now has to work to keep the region and its Vanilla Islands in the forefront, as he looks at Seychelles as a tourism destination in its own right.

“Taleb Rifai accepted to be present alongside the Vanilla Island Ministers at the Top Resa Tourism Trade Fair in France as he has accepted to be with the regional organization at the World Tourism Market in London. The Secretary General of the UNWTO has accepted to be the one to even call a press conference for the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands at the World Travel Market in London where he will stand with me, as the President of the Vanilla Islands, and the other ministers of the region to break the news to the Community of Nations and to the world of tourism about the new tourism region in the Indian Ocean. We could not have asked for more than what he has offered to our organization,” Minister Alain St.Ange of the Seychelles said.

The Vanilla Islands Ministerial meeting in La Reunion brought together key players of the tourism industry from the different islands to put on their thinking caps and to come out with what is best for the sustainability of the region as a whole.

“What’s come out of these two working days was the need for the islands to work for a sustainable tourism concept. Today the Community of Nations is looking at La Reunion Island not just as an Island destination, but as a world-class tourism destination in the Indian Ocean - a first for La Reunion Island who has been working hard to make their mark on the international tourism scene,” the Seychelles Minister said.

Mr. Jean Francois Sita and Mrs. Corine Beaulieu called a meeting with all the different sections from both the Regional Council of La Reunion and also its General Council to discuss the island's participation in the 28th edition of the Creole Festival in Seychelles this coming October. Also present was Mr. Pascal Viroleau, the CEO of the IRT (Ile Reunion Tourisme), who will be using the event to also showcase La Reunion as a tourism destination to the invited press and to the general public.

The meeting coincided with a working visit to La Reunion by the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, Mr. Alain St.Ange. It is the Department of Culture of the Seychelles Ministry of Tourism and Culture who is mandated to organize this Creole Festival and to regroup the Creole-speaking countries of the world in the one celebration.

La Reunion Island is making their mark at this coming edition of the Creole Festival not only with the their traditional cultural participation with music, dance and food, but they are taking their delegation to new heights with an important contingent from the island's business community to showcase all products made in La Reunion inclusive of the creative industry range.

The La Reunion delegation will also have a group of businessmen who are specialists in the world of renewable energy and water.

"The aim of regrouping everyone from the Creole-speaking world is to firstly showcase the Creole people in all its diversity, but it is also to open trading possibilities between our islands. We salute La Reunion Island for the initiative to use this Creole Festival to open business opportunities for their manufacturers, artisans, musicians, and artists. We shall be working with them to ensure that they find local partners in Seychelles to become their agents and start importing intro Seychelles products made in the Indian Ocean region," said Alain St.Ange to the press after the meeting.

The Minister from Seychelles also said that the La Reunion leaders are working hard to open new avenues for their business community. The Minister also said that it was now confirmed that not only Seychelles and La Reunion, but Mauritius, Rodrigues of Mauritius, Creole-speaking Louisiana in the USA, Haiti, and Martinique were all going to be in Seychelles for the 28th edition of the Creole Festival from October 25.

Mauritius congratulates Seychelles for bringing Vanilla Islands on global scene

Image from Seychelles Ministry of Tourism and Culture

Sep 18, 2013

The Ministerial meeting of Vanilla Islands that was held from September 10-12 in La Reunion has been under the microscope of the regional press. It has been the general feeling that the blessing of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) was a positive move to the regional organization. Jean Clement Cangy, the respected journalist of the Le Mauricien newspaper of Mauritius, in his analysis paper has taken time to reiterate the words of Taleb Rifai, the Secretary General of UNWTO when he publicly stated during a press conference in La Reunion Island that was attended by a large contingent of international press that he “solemnly gave the full support of his organization to the fully-fledged regional tourism entity.”

The stance taken by the World Tourism Organization towards the Vanilla Islands, the grouping of small island states that are actively promoting tourism (comprised of Seychelles, Mauritius, La Reunion, Madagascar, Comoros, Mayotte, and Maldives) constitutes, according to Jean Clement Cangy, “a massive international publicity” for the region as a tourism destination, and epitomizes the Vanilla Island concept, pushing its visibility beyond borders.

The dynamism of Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, and the current President at the helm of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands Organization, in its battle to gain international recognition of the regional body and propelling its tourism status in the international press, was hailed to the highest level possible. “Behind the spontaneous success of the regional body and its massive coverage on the international scene is no other than the signature of Alain St.Ange, the President of the Vanilla Islands, who is also the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture. Minister St.Ange contributed immensely to the promotion of the Vanilla Island concept, and he has successfully pitched it to the regional and international arena,” Jean Clement Cangy writes.

Despite skeptical moments by Mauritius, the move towards the success of the Vanilla Islands was also as a result of the Mauritian involvement, and their massive input in the meeting on La Reunion Island was not left unnoticed. Indeed according to Jean Clement Cangy, with the success of the grouping’s tourism promotion on the global arena, Mauritius was forced to accept that the island tourism industry has a lot to gain in the Vanilla Islands grouping and should not be deprived the opportunity to go with the flow.

“We should now wait that Mauritius gainfully board the carnival wagon hosted in Seychelles in 2014 which attracts international press from all over the world,” Mr. Jean Clement Cangy writes.

Water-Sea-Oceans Film Festival issues honors to Indonesia and Seychelles

Sep 18, 2013

Last weekend, from Friday, September 13, to Sunday, September 15, in Hluboka nad Vltavou in the Czech Republic, the Republic of Seychelles and the Republic of Indonesia were specially honored by the Water-Sea-Oceans Film Festival who celebrated their 10th anniversary.

In fact, the Festival was dedicated to the promotion of these two Indian Ocean archipelagos on account of their rich marine lives and their spectacular and colorful environments.

The whole exercise amounted to a special promotion of the two nations that in recent years have been making regular headlines for their tourism achievements. Seychelles and Indonesia are the up-and-coming diving destinations for people living in the landlocked Czech Republic.

Her Excellency, Emeria W. A. Siregar, the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the Czech Republic, and other Indonesian tourism officials represented their country at the official Opening Ceremony.

The Republic of Seychelles was represented by Founding President Sir James R. Mancham and the Seychelles Tourism Ambassador in the Czech Republic, Mr. Gwilym Sicobo.

Also present was Seychellois lawyer, Maitre Daniel Belle, who is in Prague to discuss a major tourism project for Seychelles.

The Indonesian dimension was focused on Indonesian’s varied diving potentials generally, and on Bali in particular, where this year’s Miss World contest was being simultaneously hosted.

An exclusive screening of a short documentary entitled “The Making of Aldabra” depicted the enormous challenges of filming a 3D film on the remote Aldabra archipelago.

Former President Mancham was chosen to present the main award of the event, The Grand Prix of the Water-Sea-Ocean Festival, which went to the film Planet Ocean directed by Yann Arthus-Bertrand and Michael Pitiot. The award was presented personally to the film´s cinematographer, the world-renowned Australian filmmaker, artist, educator, and conservationist David Hannan. Mr. Hannan has just completed an important project on Cook Island funded by the Australian government and other international donors.

When he presented the award, Sir James commented that the time has come for the world to know more about the Water-Sea-Ocean Film Festival in Hluboka.

He said that all supports must be provided to the organizers of the Festival so that this annual event could assume the true international stature that it deserves and make it as well known as the Cannes Festival, Berlin Festival, and Venice Festival.

In this connection, Sir James was widely applauded when he suggested to the Mayor of Hluboka, Mr. Tomas Jirsa, and to Senator Vladimir Dryml, that they should ask the government of the Czech Republic to consider issuing a special stamp cover to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Water-Sea-Ocean Festival which has clearly shown that the Czech people have developed a great love for the sea, the oceans, and maritime life although many of them live far away from the sea.

AIRLINE NEWS FROM AFRICA

Air Seychelles promotes local talent

BY DR. WOLFGANG H. THOME, ETN CORRESPONDENT, AFRICA | SEP 18, 2013

Air Seychelles’ CEO Cramer Ball yesterday presented commander’s bars to First Officers Archille Young and Shiv Padayachy at the national airline’s head office which is located at the Seychelles International Airport. Captain Pete Mitchell, General Manager Operations, Captain Granger Narara, Head of Flight Operations, and training instructors Captain Sandy Benoiton, Chief Domestic Pilot, and Captain Eddie Cesar also attended the ceremony.

The new Twin Otter Commanders successfully completed the rigorous Company Command Upgrade Program, which includes refresher training on aircraft technical elements, Crew Resource Management (CRM), leadership, decision-making and emergency procedures.

Chief Pilot, Captain Sandy Benoiton and Captain Eddie Cesar were trained and certified as flight instructors to the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) standard and are the first two Seychellois Captains to conduct Company Command Upgrade training in ten years.

Hailing from Anse Boileau, 24-year old Captain Archille Young, completed his A levels at the Seychelles Polytechnic at Anse Royale. He joined Air Seychelles in June 2010 and worked for 14 months at the Operations Control Centre before becoming a full time pilot on the Twin Otter as a First Officer. Captain Young is a Flight Safety Officer and a member of the Safety Action Group. He has also been trained in Flight Data Monitoring and Audits.

Captain Shiv Padayachy, who is 28 years old and hails from Anse Royale, completed his A Levels at the Seychelles Institute of Technology (SIT) at Mont Fleuri. He joined Air Seychelles in June 2011 and worked for six months at the Operations Control Centre before flying full time as a Twin Otter First Officer.

Both Captain Young and Captain Padayachy completed an 18-month training as commercial pilots at the 43rd Air School in South Africa under scholarships from the Government of Seychelles, after having completed compulsory basic military training in Seychelles prior to joining the national airline.

Cramer Ball was quoted to have said on the occasion of handing the pilots their captain’s stripes: “Achieving the rank of captain is a major milestone in any pilot’s career, and I am delighted to present Archille Young and Shiv Padayachy with their epaulettes to mark their passage to the rank of Commander. This is a major accomplishment at such a young age. Our Seychellois workforce is the future of the airline, and we are committed to its development, and to nurture that talent. I am particularly thrilled that the command training program was conducted by our very own Seychellois pilots, Sandy Benoiton and Eddie Cesar.”

Air Seychelles presently employs 53 Seychellois pilots, 10 Airbus captains; 20 first officers; 14 Twin Otter captains, and nine Twin Otter first officers, a sign that developing local talent has taken deep roots in the airline.

Seychelles-Indo exhibition marking Seychelles-India Day celebrations 2013

The relationship between India and Seychelles has long been characterized as one based on close friendship, mutual understanding, and on cooperation. Diplomatic ties between Seychelles and India took off after Seychelles gained its independence from Great Britain in 1976. In 1979, an Indian mission was established in Victoria with the High Commissioner based in Dar es Saalam concurrently accredited in Seychelles. Despite the first resident High Commissioner placed in Victoria in 1987 with Seychelles opening its resident mission in New Delhi in early 2008 with Dick Esparon as its first High Commissioner and Waven William appointed as Seychelles Ambassador to India in February 2012, the historical link between the two countries dated as far back as Brayer du Barre’s first true settlement in Seychelles on St. Anne Island in 1770.

Seychelles’ first edition of India Day takes a microscopic look into the factual historical events cementing Seychelles-Indo bilateral relations from its origin to the present day. Through a collection of photos and historical information, the Seychelles-Indo exhibition traces the period between 1770 to the present day. Indians were the first to migrate to the islands and subsequently integrated within Seychelles population.

The first few who settled on St. Anne Island in 1770 came as laborers and originated from the Malabar Coast of India. Their names were Charvy, Moulia, Meinatte, Corinthe, and Domingue. Following further successive migrations, Indian integration into Seychelles society has been rather so remarkable that it is believed that more than 82% of the Seychelles population has some Indian roots in one form or another.

The organization of the Seychelles Hindu Kovil Sangam in 1984 consecrated the Navasakti Vinayagar Temple. This remains to date the one and only Hindu temple in Seychelles. The celebrations of the Taippoosam Kavadi Festival which was first instigated in 1993 remains a key event for the resurgence of the Indian cultural activities in Seychelles.

Interestingly, the Kavadi gained so much popularity as a national festival that in 1998 the Seychelles government declared it a holiday for Hindus. Seychelles and India, through their rich cultural ties, continue to mold the Seychelles society.

The Seychelles Ministry of Tourism and Culture in close collaboration with the Indian High Commission and Seychelles-India Day Society are putting their resources together to bring into Seychelles India Day the good side of India. The Seychelles-Indo exhibition which will kick start Seychelles India Day on October 5 at the International Conference Centre will be an ideal platform for the public to indulge into Seychelles-Indo history and the existing bilateral relationship before getting a real taste of the modern India.

He will represent India as part of a celebrity-studded, 50+ Indian team, in Seychelles to celebrate the first ever Seychelles-India Day. “Seychelles-India Day is a 3-day extravaganza to showcase Indian talent and culture. Sep 15, 2013

The tropical islands of the Seychelles has made its first appearance at the JATA Habitaku Travel Showcase of Japan.

“It is the right time for Seychelles to be tapping into the Japanese market as it is one of the top 3 traveler’s market in North East Asia,” this reassuring statement was made by Ms. Julie Kim, the Regional Manager for Korea and Japan, after participation in the JATA Habitaku Travel Showcase 2013, from September 12-15, 2013. “I expect growth of the Japanese market for Seychelles will synergize the growth of the other Asian markets,” she further continued.

The delegation, which was headed by Ms. Sherin Naiken, CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board, also saw the participation of the Seychelles Honorary Consul General in South Korea, Mr. Dong Chang Jeong, the Seychelles Tourism Board Regional Manager for Asia & Australasia, Mr. Jean Luc Lai Lam, as well as members of the tourism trade, namely: Ms. Jessica Giroux, Sales Manager from Masons Travel (jgiroux@masonstravel.com), and Mrs. Blaisila Hoffman, Marketing Manager, (Blaisila.hoffmann@creoletravelservices.com) and Ms. Setsuko Suzuki, Japanese representative, (info@creoletravelservices.com) both from Creole Travel Services. Members of the delegation participated in several side meetings other than the fair, which included meetings with several major tour operators and travel agencies to market Seychelles as a new destination for the Japanese market.

The various international business meetings and media meetings which spanned over 2 days also focused on segmenting the present Seychelles products by introducing specific niches to the Japanese market namely: weddings and honeymoons, health fitness events such as marathons, diving, and fishing. The Seychelles Tourism Board also seized the opportunity to meet with specific airline partners that connect Japan to the Seychelles so as to build stronger partnership and further strengthen mutual cooperation.

The last 2 days which were the main days of the travel fair focused on members of the general public. Japan has a population of 130 million people of which their outbound travel only for last year was at 18.49 million.

The Seychelles Tourism Board has expressed satisfaction at the outcome of their participation in the fair.

Ms. Naiken shared: “We are very much convinced after participation in the fair that the Japanese tourism market is very promising for Seychelles. We already have the products for a category of their travelers which are wedding, honeymoon, as well as diving, fishing, and fitness events. With the increase in air accessibility, Seychelles may be as close as 12 hours’ flight time from Japan.”

Encouraged by the outcome of the fair, for next year the Seychelles Tourism Board intends to increase its awareness and education of the market by holding press conferences and agent workshops/seminars to raise the profile in the region and provide training for the local trade. It is also in their plans to later consider organizing educational and media familiarization trips for the main agents and tour operators in Japan to bridge the knowledge gap on the destination.

JATA Travel Showcase is the largest and oldest consumer and trade fair in Japan. The number of booths in the exhibition hall in TABIHAKU 2013 has reached 1,353, up from 1,093 last year, the highest ever. A total of 730 exhibitors are participating in the travel show compared to 708 last year, representing some 154 countries, down from 156 in 2012.

Ile Soleil tourism development back on track

BY DR. WOLFGANG H. THOME, ETN CORRESPONDENT, AFRICA | SEP 15, 2013

Following extensive examinations on the initial plans for the development of the Ile Soleil, with particular emphasis on tourism projects, was a new version launched a few days ago, which includes stakeholder input after taking advice and critique on board. Following the formal introduction of the project last year, which was reported here, a time out was agreed when a flood of comments and observations were made at stakeholder meetings and in public forum, compelling the promoters to go back to the drawing board with the aim to improve the various aspects of the development.

Barry Faure, who is also the Chairman of the Seychelles Tourism Board, announced the changes which include setting more land aside for tourism purposes, extending the lease period up to 99 years and introducing a new policy on the development of villas among other incentives the government put in place.

New tender documents are now available from the Seychelles Investment Board and the closing deadline for proposals has been set for December 2. A major marketing campaign towards that date will be launched in early October to allow for enough time for potential investors to make their own studies before committing to the project in earnest. More details can be access via the following web link which outline the Seychelles’ government plans to make more reclaimed land available to meet the development needs over the next two to three decades:

Alain St.Ange of Seychelles takes the floor during UNWTO meeting in La Reunion Island

Minister Alain St.Ange of Seychelles addressing UNWTO Conference in La Reunion Island

Sep 15, 2013

The Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, Mr. Alain St.Ange, was invited to take the floor at the UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organization) conference on the tropical island of La Reunion to analyze the question of “Tourism Development and Conservation of Island Resources - How to solve the equation,” the topic that was at the center of, and that remained the main topic of, the UNWTO conference.

This UNWTO conference, which attracted some forty countries, was being chaired by Mr. Taleb Rifai, the Secretary General of the UNWTO, in partnership with President Didier Robert, the President of the region La Reunion, and Mr. Pascal Faure, the Head of the French Directorate General for Competitiveness, Industry and Services.

Minister St.Ange spoke after Mr. Simon Anholt, a Policy Advisor on National Image, had presented a paper on the working practices and recommended approaches to increase visibility and on marketing approaches for tourism destinations.

When he took to the podium, Minister Alain St.Ange said that the tourism industry of the Seychelles was going against the regional trend, and that it was again this year recording an increase in visitor arrival numbers on a year-on-year basis. The Minister also said that tourism remains the pillar of the Seychelles economy. To the surprise of everyone, Minister Alain St.Ange then said that he would not be presenting the prepared presentation that had already been submitted as he had heard the message echoed by Mr. Simon Anholt, the Policy Advisor on National Image. "I will not stand here to repeat the lines and to repeat the phrases about what the Seychelles is all about, but I will instead be telling you what we are doing to ensure that our island's tourism remains relevant and visible," Minister St.Ange said.

An off-the-cuff address followed, where the Seychelles Minister pitched his islands as the one destination able to innovate when necessary, and to be the destination with a tourism industry ready to ensure it is consolidated for the long term. "We know that we are but small mid-ocean islands that are dependent on tourism as the pillar of our economy. For this to work we need air access, and so we opened our airspace to ensure adequate air connectivity, for without planes flying from our main source markets we shall not have a viable tourism industry. We need our visitors, so we welcome them without any annoying measures, this is why we have in place a No Visa Policy. Everyone can come to Seychelles and not be worried by visa requirements. As was said by Simon Anholt in his earlier address, destinations need courage and imagination in mapping out their way forward. This is exactly what Seychelles is being guided by," Minister Alain St.Ange said.

The Minister from Seychelles then spoke about the spirit of working with neighbors and with friends in regional or international organizations. “We are proud members of the UNWTO, the United Nations World Tourism Organization, and our commitment to be a committed member saw us elected to the Executive Council of the organization during the General Assembly that was just held in Zambia and Zimbabwe,” the Minister said. “We are also part of the Indian Ocean Commission; the Indian Ocean Rim; the SADC; COMESA; RETOSA; the EAST 3 ROUTE concept with KwaZulu of South Africa, Swaziland, Mozambique, and Seychelles working together; and, of course, the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands where I currently sit as the organization's President.

“We are always willing to cooperate with the Community of Nations and with all our neighbors. When I heard Glenn Phillips, the Managing Executive for Tourism Development and Marketing of the National Parks of South Africa, speak just before me on his Big Five promotional campaigns, I want to reassure him that we value his campaign, as this Big Five concept continues to bring visitors to the region for the safaris, but in our desire to work with mainland Africa, we coined a couple of years ago, twin-center approaches for safari-beach holiday options, with our tagline that states - From the Big Five to the Best Five - where we pushed safaris on the African mainland and the beach relaxing break in Seychelles. This is just one example of us working together in partnership with our neighbors. A second such approach is the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands Organization of which I am the sitting President. Unity in the region makes strength for the region. Here the success is the drive to open new target markets as the new tourism destination.”

The Seychelles Minister said that Seychelles wants to be seen as being good custodians of what God has blessed them with. "We want to protect what we have, and we want to ensure that all the special attributes that attracts visitors to our shores remain intact. So we have declared over 50% of our land area as protected national parks. This decision to protect our environment is costly for a small island state, but our commitment is shown through the courage we have as a country to pursue this set objective. We have gone further by encouraging the private sector block to work with us in our new Sustainable Tourism program where we now have our very own label for hotels who meet the standards we have set," the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture said.

Minister Alain St.Ange spoke about the Seychellois as the most diverse country saying, "Originally we arrived from France, Africa, the UK, India, and China, but today we are but a united people of some ninety thousand only called the Creoles of the Seychelles with a diverse culture, with a diverse cuisine, and with diverse music."

The Minister touched on the subject of Seychelles being a long-haul tourism destination with a tourism development plan set to balance development and the respect of the island's environment. "How do we achieve the respect of our environment you can ask? We remain the tourism destination guided by the word ‘personalized’ tourism. We accept no charter business, as this would push us into the arena of mass tourism. We work tirelessly to consolidate our tourism industry on a drive for sustainable tourism developments. We work to get our people involved in the industry that remains the pillar of our economy, and this we shall continue to do under the catch phrase of claiming back our industry which we have renamed the Seychelles Brand of Tourism," Minister Alain St.Ange of the Seychelles concluded.

Mahe International Airport Commission expanded cargo section

BY DR. WOLFGANG H. THOME, ETN CORRESPONDENT, AFRICA | SEP 15, 2013

The Minister for Home Affairs and Transport Joel Morgan yesterday formally cut the tape for a new cargo facility, which is part of the ongoing airport modernization and expansion to bring 21st century operating standards to the Seychelles’ only international airport.

A new warehouse facility with over 850 square meters of space was part of the newly commissioned buildings and it is understood that new customs facilities are already under construction.

Also part of the new extension are additional offices for Air Seychelles, the National Drug Enforcement Agency and aviation security, and the move will according to the source in Victoria be completed over the weekend, with the new facilities fully operational on Monday morning.

Meanwhile is speculation continuing over Air Seychelles’ plans to introduce a third aircraft to the fleet and whether it will be another Airbus A 330 long haul plane, and on what routes it may be deployed or else an Airbus A320 to be used on the current routes to Mauritius, perhaps one day – now that the Vanilla Island Organization has been launched – to Reunion or to launch additional routes to the African mainland. Former British pop star, Myleene Klass, and Mr. World 2010, Kamal Ibrahim, will be hosting the pageant this year.

Meanwhile, the Seychelles Tourism Board – the driving force behind Agnes’ participation in Miss World 2013 – is appealing to members of the public to continually vote for “Miss Seychelles…. Seychelles set to mark World Tourism Week 2013 with a lavish start

Tourism Ball 2013 poster

Sep 12, 2013

The time has come to bring out the tuxedos and glitzy gowns, now that the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) is holding its annual Tourism Ball in collaboration with a myriad of its faithful partners.

The Tourism Ball is this year being held at the Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Hotel & Casino and is part of a series of activities to mark Tourism Week this year. The theme for World Tourism Day this year is “Tourism and Water protecting our Common Future.”

To add a twist to this year’s edition of Tourism Week, the Tourism Board and the Ministry of Tourism and Culture is holding the ball at the beginning of the week, rather than at the end as has been the case over the last couple of years. Those attending the prestigious ball should be at Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Hotel & Casino at 1900 hrs. for the official opening of the annual ball where the “Who's Who” in Seychelles is again blocking their company’s or organization’s tables. The event is expected to again provide opportunities for the business community and members of the government to meet and discuss outside normal office meetings.

During that time, guests may expect to be impressed by the unveiling of the new “Miss Seychelles Islands... Another World” poster, while more deserving local tourism establishments will be presented with the Seychelles Sustainable Tourism Label (SSTL) certificates.

As has become customary during the Tourism Week celebrations, there will also be special entertainment at the arrival lounge at the International Airport at Pointe Larue by the duo Felix Lawen and Chanel Kilindo - visitors will experience the renowned warm Seychellois welcome as soon as they set foot on the Seychelles soil. “This year we have a series of activities catering for the visitors in Seychelles during the Tourism Week; but we also have many activities where Seychellois and visitors will participate together. For instance the special mass at the Ste. Theresa Plaisance Parish is one that will hopefully bring both the locals and the visitors together,” explained the Events and Conferencing Manager at the Tourism Board, Beryl Matatiken.

To note, the office for Migrant Workers in the Catholic faith, headed by Father Louison Emerick Bissila Mbila, is championing this mass with the full approval and backing of the Seychelles Tourism Board.

Ms. Matatiken also explained that the Tourism Board has not forgotten the island of La Digue in its activities – which is only natural, considering the island with its pristine beaches and tranquility is a well-known tourist destination in its own right. “We have joined forces with the island's Ile Vanille committee, and we will be assisting them to organize a barbecue gala on La Digue during the 2013 World Tourism Week. We expect it to be a continuation of what is being held on the main island on Mahe," added Ms. Matatiken.

Other activities planned for this year’s edition of the Tourism Week due to close on Saturday, September 28, include a Trade Fair at the International Conference Centre of Seychelles (ICCS), a special edition of the Bazar Labrin held at Beau Vallon with the help of the Beau Vallon district administration office, and special “clean up the beach campaign” by the Tourism Board staff.

Diving enthusiasts have also been included in this year’s Tourism Week edition – Big Blue Divers are offering a 10 percent discount, which is also in keeping of that company’s tradition of working with the Seychelles Tourism Board during the annual event.

Madagascar’s minister of tourism, Jean Max Rakotomamonjy, said joining the Vanilla Island Tourism organization can only be a gain for his country in joining resources, getting access to new markets.
This was also echoed by the representative minister from the Comoros

The president of the Regional Council of Reunion, Didier Rober, and host of the ongoing meeting, for his part, emphasized that Reunion is a region of France and "is working on an ease of their visa restrictions for those that wanted to visit Reunion." Reunion, along with VITO, is finalizing a plan for all visitors to get access to this French region in cooperation with a joint visa.

Pascal Viroleau, head of the Reunion Island Tourism Board, said Reunion will work with Vanilla Island member destinations, airlines and stakeholders to further the expansion and influence of the Vanilla Island Tourism organization. "Reunion tourism is growing fast and has the potential to be compared with London or Paris in percentage of tourism growth. If you build one restaurant in a desert, no one will come. If you build 1000 restaurants, you build a city like Las Vegas, and everyone will go.”

Seychelles 2013 Festival Kreol set to launch recognition of the island's musical icons

Sep 10, 2013

The Seychelles Ministry of Tourism and Culture and its Festival Kreol Organising Committee have confirmed that they will use the 2013 Festival Kreol to launch a recognition process of the island's musical icons. The Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, Mr Alain St.Ange said so at the last Festival Kreol Organising Committee Meeting and he has sought the support of SEYMAS, the Association representing the local musician in the deciding process for singling out the island's musical icons.

"It is important that we not only say that we appreciate those who have entertained us and kept our cultural heritage alive, but it is important for us to be seen to be marking this appreciation in a manner that will be long-lasting" Minister St.Ange said.

Francois Havelock and Davis Philoe are two such musical personalities whose names have been discussed by the Minister responsible for Culture and the Chairperson of the Musician's Association. One sadly passed away but weeks ago and the second one has retreated from the public eye due to health difficulties.

After charming Seychelles and their fans for years, both Francois Havelock and David Philoé have become house hold names. For David Philoe despite his retreat from the musical sphere because of his struggling battle with an illness he keeps spreading his charm and has gained Ministry of Tourism and Culture’s blessing to become Seychelles first singing star to walk away with a recognition award during the official opening ceremony of 2013 Festival Kreol.

David Philoe emerge at the age of 20 as the island’s new talent, the treasure trove of rare and great performances rose into one of the most influential stars of his generation. It is quite an interesting fact that over the years the gifted singer defied all odds to join a roster of Seychelles celebrities and took flight on the island’s mega hits of his times.

Even before he released his popular Creole hits “ Si i pa zoli” and “ Mersi Bondye”, the appearance on stage of David Philoé was a surprising and spontaneous moment conjured up before every eyes.

David Philoe also had a knack for singing as he narrates. His songs arguably contained a rich assortment of lyrics that thorn once heart apart yet it’s the singer’s pure nature of his moment that makes it one to really remembered and watch again and again.
Today Seychelles singing sensation is sure to thrill.

Alain St Ange, Seychelles Minister for Minister and Culture has taken it as his duty to go and visit David Philoé at his home to personally announce his intention of making him the first Seychellois to stand on the official opening ceremony stage of Festival Kreol and do him the honour of taking the recognition award of his contributions played in the musical arena.

“Seychelles have a string of artists who one way or another contributed immensely to the musical industry. It is important that their contributions are recognised when they are still present with us. I want you to become the first Seychellois artist that I personally pay tribute and gives due recognition to your work’’ Alain St.Ange said

Deeply touched by the gesture, David Philoé replied to Minister St.Ange that “he is honoured to take this award’’ and open the gate way for other Seychelles artists to be recognised in other editions of Festival Kreol. Minister St.Ange has thanked Au Cap District Administrator for making this visit at David Philoé possible and for being supportive of this award.

The 64 years old is marking his 45 years in the music industry with a big surprise in store for his fans. Seychelles distinctive singer is recording a spiritual album which will surely remains a reference of David Philo era.

President Mancham: "Right is Might" over "Might is Right"

Sep 05, 2013

Seated next to the former President of the Soviet Union, President Mikhail Gorbachev, at the closing of the Seventh Edition of the Earth Dialogues hosted by the Green Cross International at the Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland, on September 3, 2013, Seychelles founding President James R. Mancham called for a return to the days when the policy of: "right is might" dictated the actions of leaders and government.

He said that if we have a United Nations, all nations big and small, must agree to play to the rules of the club.

And the objectives of the club must be to ensure that what is right prevails at all times. "Sadly," Mr. Mancham said, "today's situation reveals an increased prevalence of the 'Might is Right' approach."

He stated that in the climate of "might is right," nation states compete in the armament industry, and also we see huge defense budgets which absorb so much resources that could be utilized in the building of social infrastructures such as schools, reservoirs, and power plants.

He also stated his conviction that it would be difficult to get a total ban on nuclear armament so long as the "might is right" attitude prevails.

He called upon all nations and leaders to play to the tune: "the world first and our nation second," and in this connection he called for the United Nations to issue a Human Contentment Report over and above the Human Development Report which the international body issues every year. "It is not fair to promote the presumption that if you leave behind the simple life of the village that you will find more contentment in an appartment on the 50th floor of a modern building in a developed city."

According to him, man thinks of himself as the most intelligent of all living things, yet, never before in man's recorded history has he put his own survival and that of the planet Earth and the species that live in it, in so much danger. "In reality man has, in his own mind and perception isolated himself from the very nature which sustains him and has conducted his business without much consideration for it."

The Seychelles founding President called for the need for an alternative mode of thinking where universal values converge towards the recognition of peace of mind as a relevant factor in evaluating the quality of life of an individual. "A person may have a bed made of gold, but if at the end of the day he is unable to sleep well because of anxieties, then his quality of life is less than that of the man who sleeps on the floor but who sleeps soundly."

He said that the problem of "rising expectation" and the policy of "keeping up with the Johns" can have grave consequences not ony in the national but in the international context, too.

Unfortunately he stressed that there is such advance in technology that the government of certain nations today have the ability and capacity of pursuing an active policy of "mind control" over their people, "hence why [there is] so much confusion instead of clarity, all at the expense of the transparency which should be a vital feature of a democratic society."

He asked that if today we have to look at certain features of the most powerful, advanced, and supposedly democratic society, the American society, which has so much influenced the global way of thinking over the last few decades, are we not perturbed by certain manifestations and national malaise." It's health care system, Guantanamo Bay, the gun lobby debate, a prevailing policy of disinformation and misinformation, the increased number of suicides and post war trauma, and the desire to control the private lives of its citizen and these are certainly disturbing factors.

Perhaps this explains why so many successful Americans who have been successful in the cycle of amassing wealth finally wish to find a home on a distant island where they could live like a simple fisherman. "Over and above these are those who, lacking in spirituality, make costly visits to India to be counseled by a Guru." He said that the system of today breeds too many politicians of national stature and not enough leaders of "global statesmanship level." The politician is interested in power, in the next election, and in the benefits and privileges which power confers. The statesman is interested in the next generation and not in power at all costs. He is a visionary interested in the transformation of society and at the global level the emergence of a better and more equitable world.

He said that Nelson Mandela will leave an unforgettable legacy because of his statesman's leadership in promoting national reconciliation after the defeat of the evil system of apartheid.

Likewise, President Mikhail Gorbachev will be forever remembered in promoting the Glasnost and Perestroika policies which fundamentally changed many aspects of thinking in the world.

Air Seychelles performance

Sep 04, 2013

In Q2, the national carrier of the Republic of Seychelles posted total revenues of US $26.03 million (up from $10.87 million in 2012), a significant increase of 139 percent. Total revenues for the first half of 2013 reached US $42.05 million (2012: US $18.76 million), up by 124 percent.

Air Seychelles today announced a strong second quarter and half-year financial performance, reflecting continued solid growth and success in its turnaround strategy.

Q2 passenger revenues came in at US $17.5 million (up from $7.1 million in 2012), a significant increase of 146 percent. Passenger revenues for the first half of 2013 reached US $27.97 million (2012: US $14.0 million), up by 99 percent.

Passenger numbers on the airline’s domestic and international services in Q2 2013 grew 56 percent, rising to 82,893 from 53,066. In the first half of 2013, passenger numbers grew by 44 percent to 146,980 (2012: 101,977).

Air Seychelles’ Chief Executive Officer, Cramer Ball, attributed the Q2 and half-year results to the airline’s ongoing turnaround strategy, which included significant expansion of international services following the addition of a second Airbus A330-200, and greater revenue contributions from its equity partner Etihad Airways and codeshare partners.

“We achieved triple digit growth in the second quarter of 2013 -- a tremendous result and further evidence of the success of our strategy,” said Mr. Ball. “At the beginning of the year, we committed to the further development of our network through organic growth and partnerships and we have delivered on that promise. Today, thanks to our new codeshare partnerships and the expansion of our codeshare agreement with Etihad Airways, Air Seychelles now proudly flies to four continents. We are realizing significant returns on these relationships, with a 34 percent contribution to our total revenue in the second quarter. We are creating a solid foundation for the future of our airline, Seychelles tourism and our home economy, and we are on track for a second year of profitability.”

The airline expanded its codeshare agreement with Etihad Airways to include Dublin, Melbourne and Sydney, bringing to 23 the number of codeshare destinations served by the airlines. Air Seychelles also signed codeshare agreements with airberlin, South African Airways and Czech Airlines, adding Berlin, Düsseldorf, Johannesburg and Prague to its codeshare network.

Air Seychelles’ Available Seat Kilometers (ASKs) – reflecting network seat capacity – rose by 140 percent to 335.7 million in Q2 2013 (2012: 139.8 million). Revenue Passenger Kilometers (RPKs) – reflecting traffic – increased by 207 percent to 187.1 million (2012: 60.9 million).

Increased services to Johannesburg, Mauritius and Abu Dhabi, and the launch of services to Hong Kong further reflect the airline’s growth, effectively doubling weekly international services from eight in 2012 to the current 16. The new international schedule was made possible by the entry into service of the airline’s second Airbus A330-200 passenger aircraft.

Joel Morgan, Seychelles’ Minister for Home Affairs and Transport, and Chairman of Air Seychelles, said: “The half-year performance of our national airline has exceeded expectations. As a result of its equity partnership with Etihad Airways and the codeshare agreements with other airlines, Air Seychelles has increased its global presence, resulting in record growth for Seychelles tourism. Tourist arrivals on Air Seychelles have more than doubled, increasing by 131 percent from a year ago, and the excellent feedback we have received from our guests’ experiences confirms that we are on track to achieving the goal of becoming the best airline in the region.

“Since December last year, we have modernized and signed 15 Air Service Agreements, including Hong Kong, Australia, the Czech Republic, Kuwait, South Africa, and just last week, Vietnam. Dozens more agreements are in the pipeline and these will provide greater air access and codeshare opportunities for Air Seychelles going forward, fulfilling our Ministry’s mission to continually improve air access to Seychelles.”

In addition to passenger growth, Air Seychelles cargo performed impressively in the second quarter of 2013 with 1.6 million tons carried, up by 283 percent over the 423,706 achieved a year ago. Cargo revenue for Q2 was US $3.68 million (2012: US $968,967), an increase of 279 percent. Air Seychelles cargo also showed a strong first half with 2.37 million tons carried (2012: 746,897 tons), an increase of 217 percent, while cargo revenues were US $5.32 million (2012: US $1.75 million), an increase of 204 percent.

The increase in cargo volume was attributable to the boost in under-floor freight capacity provided by the second Airbus A330, the airline’s new through-service that connects Hong Kong to Johannesburg via Abu Dhabi, and developing markets in Paris and Milan. The airline also introduced a domestic cargo product in May, providing a convenient new option for sending packages within the archipelago.

Air Seychelles has also seen active growth in the domestic market. Passenger numbers rose 20 percent to 38,397 (2012: 31,998) in Q2. The airline carried 16,891 Seychellois residents on its domestic services in Q2, up 22.1 percent from a year ago (2012: 13,832). Residents comprised 40.7 percent of the passengers carried, a reflection of the carrier’s enduring popularity with the local population.

In Q2 2013, ASKs on the domestic service grew by 16.2 percent to 3.04 million (2012: 2.62 million) and RPKs increased by 20.1 percent to 1.97 million (2012: 1.64 million).

Mr. Ball said, “I’m encouraged by the improved performance of our domestic operations. Our enhanced domestic schedule, with its increased capacity at peak travel times, has successfully catered to the increasing demand for inter-island travel, as reflected by the 18 percent growth in visitor traffic in the second quarter. We provide a reliable and efficient service for our residents, who have likewise rewarded us with an increase in traffic. We see opportunities for additional revenue and growth in our domestic operations, and we have an exciting investment plan to ensure we continue to provide the best possible experience for our guests on the domestic routes.”

The airline’s international guest experience now includes a higher quality product onboard. The inflight entertainment system was expanded in Q2 and now includes 40 movies, 60 TV programs, seven radio channels, 50 CDs and 20 games. The company’s investment in product and service enhancements, as well as the extensive and ongoing training of staff and crew at Etihad Airways’ Training Academy in Abu Dhabi, have resulted in the airline’s best ever Skytrax ranking, with Air Seychelles now ranked as the No. 2 airline in Africa, No. 3 for Best Airline Staff in Africa (a category in which the airline had no ranking in 2012), and fourth in the Most Improved category.

“This has been a transformative year for Air Seychelles,” said Mr. Ball. “Our recent Skytrax ranking is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team. The new rankings have served as a catalyst to progress further in our mission to be the best airline in the Indian Ocean. We are aiming higher now – for a four-star Skytrax rating – which will put Air Seychelles on the same level as some of the world’s most renowned airlines.”

UAE tourism industry geared up for Chinese Visitor Summit

Sep 01, 2013

The UAE capital, Abu Dhabi, is set to host The Chinese Visitor Summit, September 2-3, aimed at giving top Chinese tourism producers specific destination networking opportunities and to meet with key suppliers from the UAE and other key destinations used in multi-stop itineraries.

Taking place at The Ritz-Carlton Grand Canal, Abu Dhabi and organized by Nicholas Publishing International (NPI) in partnership with the Shanghai-based i2i Group and backed by Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi), this year’s event will bring 75 top Chinese outbound tourism bookers to the UAE capital.

The United Arab Emirates, Cyprus, Maldives, Mauritius and Seychelles will all be represented at this year’s summit, with each destination seeing huge potential for growth from China as a tourism source market.

The Chinese delegation will also comprise six leading Chinese media and tourism buyers include CEOs, general, product, outbound and MICE managers, sports events producers from wholesale, retail, leisure, golf, adventure and FIT operators.

Rob Nicholas, Managing Director, NPI said, “The summit is dedicated to building inbound Chinese visitor numbers by matching buyers to over 70 travel providers from throughout the region and further afield including hoteliers, attractions and retailers keen to tap into this lucrative market.”

“The market is wide open with the UAE currently representing less than 10% - or 31,980 travelers - of the delegation’s accumulative outbound business. And with more than half of the delegation having less than three years’ experience working with UAE suppliers, their appetite for new product is extremely keen.”

A snap survey of the summit’s Chinese delegates has revealed specific MICE opportunities with bookers looking for existing opportunities with clients from the Chinese government, industry association, education, pharmaceuticals and medical, oil and gas, retail, construction, real estate, automotive, as well as insurance, finance and corporate segments.

“What stands out in particular is that they are now focusing on suppliers of MICE, high-end travel and custom-designed products within the UAE market,” added Nicholas. “While on the leisure side, the preference is for multi-experience packages combining two destinations or more such as Abu Dhabi and the Seychelles.”
Last year’s summit proved extremely successful for Abu Dhabi with 76 Chinese travel agents and tour operators, 10 Chinese media and several Chinese government travel dignitaries receiving their first exposure to our destination.

“Summit partners and suppliers went above and beyond to impress the Chinese delegation. We are looking to build on this momentum and to particularly highlight our expanding tourism proposition which has been boosted over the past 12 months with new resort and attraction openings and tour product enhancements,” said Mubarak Al Nuaimi, Director Promotions & Overseas Offices, TCA Abu Dhabi, which operates a visitor and destination promotion center in Beijing.

“What is clear though is that local suppliers will have to begin creating tailor-made product if they are to maximize penetration of this market with delegate members requesting specific high-end product such as Gulf luxury desert driving tours. The local suppliers joining us at the summit will be naturally out to sell product, but also to learn more about what is specifically required by the Chinese buyers and their customers.”

Alexander Glos of i2i says that while unique attractions, world-class accommodation and shopping are vital in attracting Chinese visitors, its travel industry buyers are also looking for a destination which demonstrates flexibility in responding to their needs.

“They are looking for destinations that are Chinese-focused – for example, hotels that provide staff who can speak the Chinese language, as well as restaurants that offer authentic Chinese cuisine for when they have a craving for their native food. They also value the experience of shopping in stores that have Chinese attendants,” he said.

China is Abu Dhabi’s 16th largest international source market for hotel guests with more than 20,000 Chinese staying in the emirate’s hotels and hotel apartments in the first half of 2013- a 35% rise on same period in 2012. The Chinese guests also accounted for 38% more guest nights than the corresponding period in 2012.

The Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture and his delegation have returned to their mid-ocean tropical island satisfied with their participation at the 20th UNWTO General Assembly held last week in Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The Seychelles Minister, Mr. Alain St.Ange, who was accompanied on this working visit to the UNWTO General Assembly meeting by his PS for Tourism Anne Lafortune, the CEO of the Tourism Board Sherin Naiken, the island's Tourism Board Director for Africa and the Americas David Germain, and Jenifer Sinon the Tourism Board's Director for Administration, was joined at the Zambia and Zimbabwe meeting by Jimmy Butt, the Seychelles Tourism Ambassador who is based in Lusaka, Zambia.

"The Seychelles presence at the 20th UNWTO General Assembly was seen as not only successful, but also a big step forward for Seychelles and for Africa. UNWTO, through its General Assembly Meeting, brought the focus in the world of tourism on Africa. We need to now use this exposure as a stepping board for the continent as a whole to reposition its tourism industry. For Seychelles, our election to the Executive Council of the UNWTO, will inevitably increase our visibility and ensure we remain relevant in the world of tourism. It is also our opportunity to work inside the UNWTO to see more focus on Africa and its islands," said the Seychelles Minister St.Ange.

Seychelles used that General Assembly meeting to sit at the SADC Tourism Ministers Meeting, to sign an MOU with Zambia, to discuss with Tourism Ministers from the Caribbean between the CTO (Caribbean Tourism Organization) and the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands Regional Organization as both groups are principally Small Island States, to pursue discussions with the South African Minister for Tourism for a meeting with the S.A. Minister responsible for Culture, to instigate a high-level tourism meeting in Seychelles which will be led by the Zambian Vice President, and to open cooperation with Ministers from Lesotho, Congo, among many others.

"The outgoing CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board, Elsia Grandcourt, also formed part our delegation to the Zambia and Zimbabwe meeting. We were privy to the information that her appointment as the new UNWTO Director for Africa was going to be made at this 20th General Assembly meeting, and it was for us not only an honor for our country, but also the opportunity to be alongside her when she takes over her new responsibilities. We were proud as Seychellois when Elsia Grandcourt was called to the stage to take up her position as the UNWTO new Director for Africa," Minister St.Ange said.

The Seychelles Minister assured Dr. Taleb Rifai, the UNWTO Secretary General, of Seychelles’ commitment to the responsibilities that comes with holding a seat on the UNWTO Executive Council.
