Guiding the new Seychelles to the new frontier
May 31, 2014
On the 50th anniversary of the Parti Lepep, Seychelles President James Michel has vowed the ruling party would “guide the New Seychelles to the new frontier,” at a golden jubilee conference held at the International Conference Centre this evening.
The event was attended by representatives of the African National Congress of the Republic of South Africa, the Chama Cha Mapinduzi of the United Republic of Tanzania, and the Communist Party of the People’s Republic of China.
“Parti Lepep is rock solid. We are the party of change. We are the party of inclusion. We are the party which rallies the nation to the new frontier, which is ours to conquer - the party of the new Seychelles. National unity and social harmony are our hallmarks - the hallmarks of the new Seychelles, the driving force of Parti Lepep - a Parti Lepep that is more committed, more determined than ever to lead the people, to write another chapter in the history of our small nation,” said President Michel.
President Michel, who is also President of the party, paid tribute to the party founder, France Albert Rene, a party which at the time was called the Seychelles People’s United Front.
He said that President Rene was a great son of Seychelles and remains an inspiration for the party.
“Fifty years ago, a young revolutionary had a vision of justice, freedom, fraternity, and harmony for his country. This young man – France Albert René – set about transforming this vision into reality. And from this vision, the Seychelles People’s United Party emerged. It declared its aims to be: to unite the people in a democratic organization with no social, economic, religious, or racial discrimination … to seek freedom from colonial rule … and to establish a government of the people, for the people, and by the People …”
Mr. Michel said the party was created to put people at the center of development, to deliver freedom, justice, and equality to the Seychellois people and to a modern country.
“Those fifty years have been momentous ones, of epic challenges, of jubilation but also of tribulation, of monumental achievements and successes. But we also had our moments of weaknesses and shortcomings. We fell, but rose again with clenched fists, uncowed brows, and re-kindled determination to do better and more, never admitting defeat. We have lived to the full fifty of the most eventful years of the history of Seychelles. And we have made history,” said Mr. Michel.
Chinese pagoda in Seychelles set for demolition paving way for new one
May 29, 2014
Seychelles iconic Chinese temple, the Pagoda, is to be demolished to make way for a new one. On Sunday, May 25, the Chinese community on the island paid a last tribute to the derelict temple before it is eventually leveled. The Chinese pagoda has stood in its original place near Sir Selwyn Clark Market for more than a hundred years. It houses a shrine and statue of Kuan ti-the Chinese God of War. The most impressive powerful statues and spiritual strength of the pagoda were removed from the temple and re-housed with members of the Seychelles Chinese Association.
It will cost R9 million and ten months of patience and efforts to get the pagoda back into tiptop shape. Today, the redevelopment effort of the Chinese pagoda is moving on all fronts. The Chinese Association has already secured $3.4 million through fundraising events, sales of China Day lottery tickets, and a little bit of help from Shi Zhongjun, Chinese Ambassador to the Seychelles.
As the Seychelles Chinese community bid farewell to its iconic temple, the Designated Minister, Mr. Vincent Meriton, and Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, were present to witness this historical event. The two ministers said that this pagoda is part and parcel of the Seychelles multi-ethnic roots in which China plays a major part.
The Seychelles Chinese community took pride in their old pagoda. It was in this 112-year-old building that families joined together in festive seasons and shared their happiest and saddest memories.
In ten months’ time, when the new pagoda is brought to life, its restaurant on the ground floor will once again echo the enchanting sounds of Chinese traditional instruments. The first floor will be turned into a praying hall refurbished with the shrines and Chinese God statues, and a room adjusted to it is designated to be a game area.
The Vanilla Islands Organization is working for the Indian Ocean
May 28, 2014
The Vanilla islands has positioned itself on social media. After lengthy discussions on the need to integrate social media into their communications strategy so as to remain visible and successful, Pascal Viroleau, the CEO of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands, organized a workshop that took place in Mauritius on May 26 and 27. It was an Australian expert in the field of social media who provided the technical support for the workshop that saw the participation of representatives coming from the Comoros, Madagascar, the Maldives, Mauritius, Mayotte, Reunion Island, and the Seychelles.
Mr. Viroleau said at the time of the workshop that for a group like the Vanilla Islands, the challenge is important not only to be present individually but also to be coherent in their concerted actions. He said that the participants who came from Comoros, Madagascar, the Maldives, Mauritius, Mayotte, Reunion Island, and the Seychelles have from now the essential tools to work together according to a digital strategy validated by the participants.

Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, said that this latest workshop organized by the Vanilla Islands shows that the organization is working for the Indian Ocean. "We are all conscious that visibility of our islands is so important for our continued success. Today, our organization has moved to get every island of the group to work with social media. This will ensure we remain visible as islands and as a region. By being visible, we shall remain relevant," said Minister St.Ange, who was himself the president of the organization for two terms and a strong and very active supporter of the Vanilla Islands concept. Today, it is President Didier Robert, the President of the Regional Council of La Reunion Island, who is the President of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands. He will be in office until December when he is expected to hand over the reins to the Madagascar Minister of Tourism during the Reunion Island Festival Liberte Metisse event in December. This event falls on the Vanilla Islands Calendar of Events together with the Seychelles Carnaval International de Victoria (April), the Gastronomic & Cultural Festival of Comoros (August), and the Madagascar Tourism Fair (May).

The Vanilla Islands positions itself on social media
May 27, 2014
It is now a requirement that tourist destinations must have integrated social media into their communications strategy to be visible and successful.
Although it is the case for the islands of the Indian Ocean, numerous questions arise nevertheless in these destinations.
Does the islands have enough contents to be visible on YouTube (which is the second most important search engine today)?
Do all the professionals have access to a booking engine?
For a group like the Vanilla Islands, the challenge is important not only to be present individually but also to be coherent in concerted actions.
The workshop that took place on Mauritius on May 26 and 27 tried to answer this problem thanks to the technical contributions of an Australian consultant specializing in the question content.
The participants who came from Comoros, Madagascar, the Maldives, Mauritius, Mayotte, Reunion Islands, and Seychelles have from now the essential tools to work together according to a digital strategy validated by the participants.

CULTURAL SEYCHELLES PROMOTES TOURISM
Seychelles names its first “Cultural Ambassadors”
May 27, 2014
The Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture used the 2014 FetAfrik Gala Dinner to officially name its first “Cultural Ambassadors.” Alphadi, Niger's top Fashion Designer; Musama Kaloto Chamunda, Zambia’s prominent chef; and Elizabeth Essein from the Tripple Heritage Dance Company have become the Seychelles first “Cultural Ambassadors.” It was during FetAfrik’s Gala Dinner on Saturday, May 24, at Berjaya Beau Vallon Hotel & Casino that Alain St.Ange, Minister for Tourism and Culture, proudly nominated this year’s FetAfrik guests of honor as Seychelles “Cultural Ambassadors.” Minister St.Ange said that increased visibility of the Seychelles in Africa’s cultural arena can only be achieved by being actively involved in the cultural arena of Africa.
“As we consolidate our attachment with Africa, we need to count on friends on the continent to more open doors for our young Seychellois and for the Seychelles business community. Today, we have come into an agreement with Alphadi, the known and respected founder of the International Fashion Festival (FIMA), that one of our designers accompanied by a Seychellois model will participate in the forthcoming Fashion Festival in Niger. It is our ministry's duty to continue to open doors for the Seychellois, and we need to count on our friends from the continent to continue to make this happen,” the Minister said.
Alphadi said in return that Seychelles has multicultural roots and that it overtly prided its African roots.
“I love Seychelles, and I commit to work for the country,” Alphadi said.
Seychelles already has a Tourism Ambassador program with representatives in more than thirty countries across the world. The appointment of Seychelles’ first “Cultural Ambassadors” will open doors for more friends of Seychelles to work with the Ministry of Tourism and Culture to further raise the visibility of the Seychelles in the four corners of the world.
Promising booking trends for Vanilla Islands
May 27, 2014
The primary mission of the Vanilla Islands Organization is to assist the various island member states and their respective tourism boards to further promote and enhance the concept and development of island hopping combinations between the islands. Increased visibility that can be translated into more bookings is its principal target to provide the additional exposure to the Indian Ocean region and the diversity of its islands.
On the occasion of ITB Berlin, one of the most important tourism trade fairs, it is of prime importance to establish the booking trends into the Indian Ocean region and to assess the demand for such bookings from the German market.
The organization views the German market as one of the most strategic for its region. In 2013, it represented the second largest market (9.2% of all international arrivals) after France (30.4 % of all international arrivals) as the primary source market for the majority of the Vanilla Islands of the Indian Ocean.
Following a slight decrease of 3% in 2013, the early trends for 2014 are very encouraging: arrivals for January and February 2014 have recorded a net progression of over 5% over the same period last year.
The organization has also noted that the this tendency is very much on the rise as the booking orders for arrivals between March and December 2014 has a global upward trend of over 20% for the majority of the Vanilla Islands member states.
Three main islands are leading this growth trend, namely Mauritius (+34%), Maldives (+19%), and Seychelles (+11%). La Réunion is also registering and interesting progressive growth trend (+2%).
These trends emanate from a series of research and facts collected by a company called Forwardkeys on the major worldwide reservations systems. These figures represent slightly more than 50% of tourism arrivals and are, therefore, a very good indicator of the forward trends for 2014.
AIRLINE EXPANSION FROM AFRICA TO CHINA
Aviation company in Kenya gets charter license for China
BY PROF. DR. WOLFGANG H. THOME, ETN AFRICA CORRESPONDENT | MAY 27, 2014
The investment in two Kenyan aviation companies, first in Kijipwa Aviation in Kilifi and more recently in Phoenix Aviation in Nairobi, seems to have borne immediate fruits when Phoenix, according to a notice published by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, had their air service license amended to include non-scheduled flights from Kenya to destinations in China for both passengers and cargo.
There has been speculation why FSG, where Blackwater Founder Erik Prince is Chairman of the Board of Directors, would buy into Kenyan aviation companies, reportedly holding a 49 percent stake in the two firms, but this latest development is opening the door wide, fueling rumors from the Wilson airport grapevine like rarely before.
The recent visit by China’s Premier and the signing of multi-billion US dollar deals, which also saw a Chinese airline take a stake in Astral Aviation, has clearly opened the doors for expanded business opportunities and establishing more aviation links, is seen as a prerequisite to facilitate business travel and shipment of goods. It is not known at this stage when Phoenix intends to start flights and in particular what aircraft the airline intends to use as their present fleet does not include long-range, wide-bodied jets but rather Cessna Citation business jets, Beechcraft King Airs, and Cessna Grand Caravans among others.
National airline, Kenya Airways, will later this year expand their scheduled services with flights to Shanghai and Beijing, over and above their present daily service to Hong Kong and Guangzhou.
EVENT OPENS FOR ENJOYMENT BY TOURISTS AND LOCALS ALIKE
Seychelles opening of FetAfrik 2014 brings out rich taste of African culture
May 26, 2014
The fusion of Seychelles and Africa’s folkloric music and dance was the center of the official opening of FetAfrik 2014, the Seychelles event that marks Africa Day. The beat of “Jambe,” the African’s tam-tam drums performed by Seychellois “native" group echoed throughout the National Cultural Centre in Victoria. The tone for FetAfrik 2014 was set.
Seychelles was ready for its FetAfrik, with its three-day event. As invitees arrived for the official opening ceremony, the beat of the drums died down to be overtaken by Tony Joubert’s imposing voice. Dubbed “Raspyek,” he narrated through his poem “Here in Diaporas,” the story of a liberated slave. Joined in by Stephanie Joubert, they cried for “Freedom.” The national cultural troupe took the scene staging the suffering of the slaves, claiming the heart of spectators with Seychelles’ traditional dance. It was then time for Margaret Confait, the Master of Ceremonies, to give her opening remarks before calling on stage Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, to deliver his speech and declare open FetAfrik 2014.
Minister St.Ange explained the reasoning behind organizing FetAfrik. He said FetAfrik is a festival in which we recognize, honor, and celebrate Seychelles African roots and the island's African ancestors.
“It is for these reasons that we invite our African brothers and sisters, both from the diverse local African community currently working in Seychelles and also the guest artists we have invited to this year’s festival from Kenya, Zambia, Nigeria, and Niger from the African mainland.”
Minister St.Ange paid tribute to Alphadi, one of Africa’s most famous celebrities and highly-acclaimed international fashion designer; George Waweru, better known as DJ Kalonjay from neighboring Kenya; Chef Musama Kaloto Chamunda, the prominent restaurateur and chef from Zambia; and the Tripple Heritage Dance Company, a Nigerian Folkloric and cultural group.
The role of our local African community, said the Minister, is this year clearly appreciated in the event. The local African community made their presence felt in this FetAfrik with an African medley during the opening ceremony. The official opening of FetAfrik was an open-air ceremony blending Seychelles and African culture. For the invitees, the party ended there. But the night just got started for people who had come down in Victoria to join the African Bazaar and satisfy their taste buds with some African delicacies and artifacts.
Seychelles FetAfrik is also synonymous with good African song. DJ Christophe, Master of Ceremonies for the musical show, brought vibrancy in Stad Popiler Car Park as he welcomed on stage the “Fame” and “Leko” bands. The line-up of the local artists like Lydia Armand and Kwame gave way to the Nigerian Tripple Heritage Dance Company to heat up Victoria with a brilliant performance of Nigerian traditional dances. The night faded away with Edward Makori, Kenyan artists, and DJ Francis signing off this first day of FetAfrik.
Alain St.Ange uses successful PR approach to drive tourism in India
May 26, 2014
Seychelles is moving on India saying that they are ready to claim their fair share of this very important market. In the first days of August, Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, will be leading a delegation to India to get the message through to the island's Indian partners that Seychelles is ready to start receiving Indian visitors. The Seychelles Minister will be accompanied by Ms. Sherin Naiken, the CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board, as well as a delegation of the island's business community with links to India.
The official Seychelles delegation will be accompanied by members of their national cultural troupe, because of the importance played by culture in the promotion of Seychelles as the tourism destination of choice.
Last year, Seychelles celebrated their first Seychelles-India Day Celebrations when some 52 Bollywood stars flew to Seychelles to mark this feast that now falls on the Calendar of Cultural Events of the islands where the five historical lines that make the Seychellois Creole people what they are today. These celebrations mark the attachment of the Seychelles to France, Africa, the UK, India, and China, and they culminate in the annual Festival Kreol celebrations of October, the celebrations of the proud Seychelles Creole population of today.
"We have paved our entry into India with the celebrations of the Seychelles-India Day Celebrations. Our local business partners with an attachment to India are now ready to work with us, and we are on the verge of making a big announcement that will bring to the front the new level of cooperation that now exists between India and Seychelles, a new cooperation that will not only showcase the unique beauty of the Seychelles to holidaymakers from India as never seen before, but a cooperation that will also open new doors for many young Seychellois," said Minister St.Ange.
During that working trip to India, Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, will also be speaking at the Pacific Area Travel Writers Association (PATWA) Seminar on August 2 at 7 pm at Hotel Ashok, Chanakyapuri, in New Delhi. Minister St.Ange will be part of the “PATWA Seminar on Tourism: New Initiatives” followed by the “Safari India South Asia Travel Awards” and will be joining the Minister of Tourism of India, the Minister of Tourism of the Government of Goa, the Minister of Tourism of the Government of Kamataka, the Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism of the Government of India, the Asia Representative of the UNWTO (UN World Tourism Organization), the Chairman of FAITH, and the Secretary General of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).
Seychelles has also announced recently that new direct flights between these mid-ocean islands and India is now in the cards.
"Yes, I will heading a delegation that will see us roll out in India our Seychelles PR exercise. This is work, but island style and with a Creole flair," said Minister St.Ange of the Seychelles
eTN airline review of Air Seychelles
BY JUERGEN T. STEINMETZ, ETN PUBLISHER | MAY 25, 2014
(eTN) - I recently took a flight from Abu Dhabi to the Seychelles, and then from Seychelles to Johannesburg on Air Seychelles.
First of all, let me say that my flights were fully paid for, and Air Seychelles did not have any influence on this article, nor do I have any commercial obligation to the airline.
I checked in at Victoria International Airport on the island of Mahe in Seychelles about an hour and 15 minutes before the flight.
Even though I had only a full-fare coach ticket, Air Seychelles allowed me to use the executive lounge at Mahe airport.
Check-in was quick and efficient. The security and passport control was thorough, and it took me less than 10 minutes to go through both.
Mahe airport is in need of renovation, and some duty-free stores were available within the international part of the small terminal. As it is everywhere in the Seychelles, no one is really eager to push sales on you, so browse through everything and buy if you like, there is never any pressure.
Mahe airport does not have jetways, so from the gate you simply walk to your aircraft. The airport was busy with planes ready to depart on Etihad, Emirates, Kenya Airways, and Air Seychelles.
My flight from the Seychelles to Mahe was bought from the South African Airways website and had South African Airlines flight numbers. When I checked in, I gave the check-in agent my United Airlines Mileage Plus account number, since South African Airways is a member of the Star Alliance. She entered this number in the computer, and it also showed up on my boarding pass, but only weeks later did I find out that I was unable to earn miles on United Airlines, since the flight was not operated by South African but Air Seychelles. I also have an Air Berlin frequent flier card accepted on Air Seychelles and would have used this, but this is now too late.
I was given an aisle seat on Air Seychelles in a window row with three seats.
After take-off, I saw that a number of seats were open, so I changed into a middle row with an empty seat next to me.
The aircraft was modern and had a friendly island-style flair. The flight crew was from the Seychelles and served a tasty meal with complimentary wine in economy class.
Another 2 beverage runs were conducted during the 5-hour flight, and water was available. The entertainment system was the same excellent system operated by Etihad Airways. As a matter of fact, all planes were Etihad planes with Air Seychelles colors, but with Arabian language and English language signs.
The overall experience was pleasant, except when changing to a South African Airlines flight to Capetown in Johannesburg.
The Johannesburg International airport is confusing, signs are often misleading, and you’re expected to tip porters guiding you to the right way.
I almost missed my connection, but with a lot of running and paying a porter to get me in front of the security line, I made it. Unfortunately, my suitcases were not on my flight, but were delivered to my Capetown Hotel about 3 hours later.
All in all, flying on Air Seychelles was pleasant and an airline I would recommend booking.
How does Seychelles get their islands more visible in tourism?
May 25, 2014
As Seychelles celebrates Africa Day 2014 through their own FetAfrik Festival, a delegation from the islands was in South Africa to represent the islands in the different Africa Day celebrations.
The Seychelles National Cultural Troupe had been invited to be part of the Africa Day Celebrations in South Africa in what was described by a representative of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture as the approach being used in order to get the islands more visible in target markets in the field of tourism.
Seychelles has been putting their culture and in so doing their people in the forefront in their public relations drive in keeping the islands visible in order for them to remain relevant in the world of tourism. Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, said as the national cultural troupe was flying to South Africa that the words "The culture of the nation is in the heart and soul of the people" as was spelled out by Mahatma Gandhi remains the guiding statement for his ministry. "Our people have our unique culture in their hearts and in their souls. This unique culture has our Seychelles very own DNA, and we are proud to be showing it off to the world as we get the name Seychelles seen and our culture appreciated," Minister St.Ange said.
Mrs. Marietta Matombe, the head of the National Cultural Troupe at the Department of Culture, is personally leading the Seychelles delegation to South Africa, and this week accompanied by Najoie Philoe, they were interviewed by DSTV as they worked to keep the name Seychelles in the forefront.
Cultural exchanges now play an important part in the actions by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture in getting Seychelles seen and noticed in a bid to ensure that the islands remain relevant in the world of tourism.
Message on the occasion of Africa Day from Seychelles President James Michel
May 25, 2014
“On the occasion of Africa day on 25th May 2014, Seychelles again joins with the rest of Africa, Africans living in the diaspora and the rest of the world to commemorate a very special occasion.
The 25th of May is a key date in the African calendar as it is an occasion to not only pay homage to the founding fathers of our Union but to also understand the message of hope and determination that this day carries for an Africa ever conscious of its pivotal role in a highly complex world.
On this day, we pay tribute to all those who fought and continue to fight very hard for the political and economic emancipation of our continent. FetAfrik, as it is known in Seychelles, is being celebrated here on the islands with a number of specific activities where Seychellois are getting the chance to appreciate other African cultures besides our own. But FetAfrik, is more than a celebration of cultures.
It is a vivid reminder of a continent so diverse in views, so blessed with resources and so full of promise. Through the various activities, FetAfrik also demonstrates Seychelles' continuous efforts in promoting the rapprochement of cultures and the reconciliation of nations.
In celebrating Africa's considerable achievements today and the spirit of African unity, we also renew our commitment to Panafricanism and African renaissance while looking at the greater role that Africa is destined to play in world affairs. Last year, we honored the African Union which for 50 years has dedicated itself to securing Africa's rightful place on the world stage, and to achieving a better life for all the peoples of Africa.
I applaud the African Union for focusing on an African Agenda 2063 that will set our continent on the path to the future we all want: dynamic, equitable and sustainable growth that benefits all Africans. Last year we also saw the passing of a great African Statesman - President Nelson Mandela. His legacy continues to inspire all Africans.
For the youth of Africa, Africa Day should be especially significant as our continent has the youngest population in the world. Seen through the eyes of her children, the future of Africa is bright. In this international year dedicated to Small Island Developing States by the United Nations, I am particularly proud to join the islands of Africa and of the wider African family in renewing our commitment today to work towards the progress of our continent.
As we approach the end of the MDGs, we as Africans, need to contemplate on what we have not been able to achieve and how are we going to set about accomplishing our priorities for post -2015. With Africa being the second engine for global economic growth after Asia, it is no longer acceptable that many African countries might not reach the various MDG targets set. The time has come for Africa to free itself from these paradoxes and renew efforts that will make broader social and economic progress realistically attainable for all Africans.
The theme chosen by the AU for 2014 “The year of Agriculture and Food Security” is therefore apt as we need to further our commitment in combating hunger, starvation and malnutrition, which continue to make a mockery of human dignity.
This year we mark the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Program (CAADP) and we acknowledge the role it has played to boost agricultural productivity in Africa.
The time has however come for us to look towards the oceans to secure the long-term well-being and food security of Africa. Recent events have also been a reminder of the importance of empowering the African woman and promoting gender equality.
The protection of the African girl is of pivotal importance while we must also ensure that the African boy is not left behind. On this day, we are also reminded of the ever pressing need for African leaders to unite to fight against all forms of terrorism, which is increasingly putting in peril our peace and stability.
On Africa Day 2014, let us once again reaffirm our commitment to peace, unity, democracy and prosperity for all.”
SEYCHELLES MINISTER RESPONSIBLE FOR TOURISM AND CULTURE OPENING ADDRESS: FETAFRIK
2014 Africa Day - FetAfrik - celebrations opened in the Seychelles
May 25, 2014
Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, officially opened FetAfrik 2014 in Seychelles last Friday evening. Present at the ceremony were the Designated Minister, Vincent Meriton, Minister Peter Sinon, diplomats accredited to Seychelles, members of the National Assembly, and a faithful crowd who believe in the celebration of Seychelles’ historical culture. We reproduce in its entirety the speech delivered by Minister St.Ange:
"Welcome to FetAfrik 2014. This event is, and this event remains our island's celebration of Africa Day. There are many ways to interpret FetAfrik, and I’m explaining this, not only for our guests, but I am also passing a message for all of us Seychellois, who sometimes wonder what our Ministry of Tourism and Culture is trying to do and what we are trying to achieve, through the different festivals we organize during the year in our cultural calendar of events. For the Ministry, for the PS, Ms. Benjamine Rose, and for our team at Culture, the organization of cultural festivals remains a way through which we assert our cultural, and through which we assert our national identity.
Over the years, we had established three important cultural Festivals, namely, La Semaine de la Francophonie with now a dedicated French Day held in March, FetAfrik in May, and Festival Kreol held in October each year.
Last year we added the Seychelles – India Day festival, in October, in collaboration with the India High Commission and the local Indian community; and this year we celebrated the Seychelles – China Day in January, with the participation of the Embassy of The People’s Republic of China, and also the Seychellois - Chinese community. We are now working on a British Day which will complete the five historical lines that make us who we are today, this proud Creole People of Seychelles.
Each of these five annual festivals are connected with our ancestry, they are connected with our history, and in other words they are connected with our Seychellois Cultural Heritage - and most importantly - they are connected with our multi–ethnic roots, which link us with the great civilizations of Africa, India, China, and Europe. Mahatma Gandhi said that the Culture of a Nation resides in the heart and in the soul of its people. This is why we believe that culture, and in so doing our people have a place, an important place to play in the continued development of our country. This is why these five festival are celebrated and we see them culminate in the Festival of what we are today, our Festival Kreol of October.
Seychelles has always stretched out a hand in friendship to many other people and nations, because we know within ourselves, that we are related to many other people through our multi-cultural roots, even though we do not always overtly say that we are.
Many Seychellois have ancestors that have come from Eastern and Western Africa via the slave routes and slave markets of Mozambique, Zanzibar, or Madagascar. Some Seychellois are direct descendants of slaves, many of whom are documented in photographs in our National Archives.
There are many ways of looking at cultural interactions with those countries whose people are part of our origins and as a Ministry we continue to explore every area of cooperation we can.
Festivals are very significant cultural manifestations. It gives us an opportunity to meet with many countries and peoples in one venue, to understand one another’s cultures, and also fully appreciate their diverse artistic and cultural presentations. This helps us to better understand the meaning of what they’re doing, so we can further appreciate the cultural diversity which makes us all different and unique, but at the same time unifies and brings us culturally closer.
FetAfrik is a festival in which we recognize, in which we honor, and in which we celebrate our country's African roots and our people's African ancestors. It is for these reasons that we invite our African brothers and sisters, both from the diverse local African community currently working in Seychelles, and also the guest artists from mainland Africa we have invited to this year’s festival from Kenya, Zambia, Nigeria and Niger.
Among our distinguished guests at this year’s FetAfrik 2014, we are honored to have the presence of Alphadi from Niger, one of Africa’s most famous celebrities and highly acclaimed international fashion designers; and also the founder of FIMA, a leading festival for the promotion of African fashion.
Alphadi will stage a fashion show for our FetAfrik Gala Evening tomorrow, with a new collection of 24 designs, inspired by his personal vision of the island of Seychelles. And we all look forward to enjoy this spectacle which will be the highlight of tomorrow evening.
I would also like to welcome George Waweru, better known as DJ Kalonjay, from neighboring Kenya. DJ Kalonjay is all set to electrify us on a cross-continental and cross-cultural musical journey that will span from East to West Africa, and from Central Africa to South Africa. I’m sure all of you who love to party, will not be disappointed when you see what he does.
And all the way from Nigeria, we would like to welcome the Tripple Heritage Dance Company, a multi-disciplinary entertainment and production Company from Lagos. We all look forward to your performances during your stay in Seychelles.
Our next international guest is Chef Musama Kaloto Chamunda, a very prominent restaurateur in Zambia, who has flown in especially to prepare the delightful menu for our FetAfrik Gala Evening tomorrow. I don’t yet know if the way to the heart of a country is though it’s stomach, but we’re all looking forward to enjoying Zambian cuisine tomorrow night at the Berjaya Beau Vallon Hotel, where there will also be many other things happening.
Finally, I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to the local African community who has come together to join us in celebrating African culture with their African Bazaar. This is the cooperation we needed.
Organizing a festival is a massive task involving a number of different people, lots of networking, logistics, diplomatic cooperation, and most importantly - generous sponsors who step forward and assist us in sponsoring specific events. For us as Seychellois to better appreciate who we are and what we have in the form of culture, we must continue to see, and appreciate the other cultures of the world. This is the sure way for us to assert our cultural and our national identity.
Ladies and gentlemen, we can say that we have an extraordinary life in our beautiful country, but for us at the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, success is about achieving something that will have longevity, and that will leave a lasting legacy. We are hoping that maybe through the empowerment of culture and of those who earn a living through the development of culture, we are able to leave a lasting legacy. It is now my great pleasure to declare FetAfrik 2014, officially open.
Thank you.
VANILLA ISLAND NATION COMOROS UNIQUE FESTIVAL FOR TOURISTS, ISLANDERS AND TURTLES
Tourism Mohéli, Comoros: Turtle Day - a unique celebration
May 24, 2014
Mohéli Island in the Comoros is one of the key nesting sites for green turtles in the Western Indian Ocean.
The smallest island of Comoros, Mohéli, is getting ready to celebrate the Turtle Day on May 28.
Hawksbill turtles also nest here and leatherbacks are occasionally sighted.
Green turtles nest throughout the year, with a peak during the Austral Winter.
Since 1999, May 28th has been celebrated on Mohéli as the official Day of the Turtle.
Held in Itsamia, the day has been a resounding success for the promotion of environmental awareness of sea turtles on Mohéli. In 2006, this day marked the starting point of activities to celebrate IOSEA Year of the Turtle.
Speeches about turtle conservation were made by the Curator of Mohéli Marine Park (PMM), the Minister for the Environment, Minister for Tourism, Francois Beudard of CEDTM/Kelonia and C3's Patricia Davis.
People came from all over the island to participate in a huge range of activities to suit all ages. Some of the most popular activities included tug of war, dancing, singing, poetry and dictation competitions and the ‘tam de boeuf,’ the Comorian equivalent of the running of the bulls!
The event was a great success, with an estimated 400 participants. Everybody learned a great deal about sea turtle ecology and conservation. Prizes for competition winners and IOSEA t-shirts were distributed at the end of the weekend.
The event was filmed by a team from CEDTM/Kelonia, the turtle research group from Reunion Island. Most participants received goody bags with snacks and drinks to keep them happy and full of energy throughout.
However, poaching of nesting females has become a serious problem in recent years.
The creation, in 2001, of Mohéli Marine Park (PMM), reduced the threat of turtle poaching. However, owing to a lack of funds in recent years, the Park has been unable to continue turtle surveillance, and poaching is again an increasing threat.
Tourists and locals will have the big chance to assist the laying at midnight on May 28 from the regional tourism office of Moheli.
Although the Comoros has many natural resources for tourism, such as its beaches and marine environment, it does not have as strong a tourist industry as its regional competitors Réunion, Mauritius, and Seychelles. Its weak tourist industry was mainly because of its insecure political climate, with many political upheavals over the past three decades.
Recently Comoros joined the Vanilla Island Group of Nations, an initiative first started by the Seychelles, Reunion and Mauritius with members around the Indian Ocean region to encourage tourism and cooperation.
Tourists in the Comoros are mainly wealthy Americans and Europeans, while much of the investment in hotels has come from South Africa.
NEW TOURIST EXPERIENCE
Seychelles welcomes new National Heritage treasure trail on Praslin Island
May 23, 2014
Mr. Christopher Gill and his Iles Des Palmes Eco Resort of Praslin, working in partnership with the National Heritage Foundation, which is chaired by Mr. Pat Nanty, has open a historical treasure trail that is now open to the public for tours.
The trail tour commences with an interesting display of 17th century pirate relics found along the treasure trail. It proceeds to explain the economy of the plantation era before Seychelles had an airport and the connection to the world was by slow boat every 6 months. In this era, spices were king. This is the era when Cinnamon, patchouli, and copra were important cash crops for the Seychelles.
The tour winds on to the old distillery that once supplied many of the perfume houses of Paris. The tour then goes on to the 17th century pirate oven which is a historical find of incredible proportions. It gives a direct link to the lives of pirates during that century. There were many, but the most famous was Le Vasseur La Buse or Le Boucher.
The tour enhances every visitor’s Seychelles experience, enriching their knowledge of Seychelles.
This new Heritage treasure trail on Praslin is seen as a welcomed addition to the list of important attractions now available on the island of Praslin.
Zambia's presence at FetAfrik celebrations in Seychelles shows friendly ties
May 23, 2014
The Zambian Minister of Tourism and Arts, Hon. Jean Kapata, has met with Mr. Jimmy Butt, the Seychelles Tourism Ambassador in Zambia, to express her sincere appreciation for allowing a Zambian Chef to take center stage at the African Gala Differ for FetAfrik 2014 that will be taking place on Saturday, May 24, at the Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Hotel & Casino. The Minister said during her discussions that there is no better way of expressing support of a country’s culture than through its food, as that is a symbol of the unique identity of its nation. Minister Kapata was being accompanied by the PS, Mr. Stephen Mwansa, for the meeting with Mr. Jimmy Butt.
Minister Jean Kapata of Zambia said that she was so appreciative that her country's renowned chef was in Seychelles for the 2014 Africa Day celebrations that she felt compelled to offer support to her Zambian ambassador of food. As such, despite very short notice, the Zambia Tourism Board requested an impromptu visit to Seychelles by a member of the Zambia Tourism Board and a Livingstone-based tour operator to provide branding support from Zambia during the Fetafrik in Seychelles.
Following his meeting with the Zambian Minister, Jimmy Butt, the Seychelles Tourism Ambassador in Zambia, wrote to Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, and said: “I wish to thank your ministry for the initiative to invite the Zambian chef to participate in this event and to assure you that the gesture has been very well received here by your counterpart. I also wish to thank the Seychelles Tourism Board for all their tremendous efforts to find accommodations for our guests from Zambia, despite the challenges of dealing with the very short notice," Mr. Jimmy Butt said.
Digital Marketing Training for Vanilla Islands members
May 23, 2014
In the fulfilment of its missions, the Vanilla Islands Organization is implementing additional actions to those of the islands’ tourism boards, and particularly regarding the medium- and the long-term outlook.
Three main objectives have been set in order to complement the strategy of the islands’ tourism boards:
Objective 1: increase the number of high-end tourists
Objective 2: supply tools for more efficiency
Objective 3: promote quality standards and services
In order to collaborate better on markets, to make more coherent actions, and for more efficiency, a workshop will be set up on the next May 26 and 27 in Mauritius.
On the theme of the social networks, the “community managers" of Comoros, Madagascar, the Maldives, Mauritius, Mayotte, Reunion Island, and Seychelles will meet for the workshop in order to gain a better insight into this growing marketing field.
An Australian consultant recognized in the tourism sector will be conducting this workshop to provide the participants with the knowledge and know-how to better embrace these new marketing technologies, reaching out to new clients and potential holiday makers.
It is indeed recognized that the social networks constitute an ideal field and marketing platform to ensure the promotion of the destinations and to interact directly with the population.
The Vanilla islands must be correctly positioned, and this training marks the first stage of this collective work.

MULTICULTURAL EVENT FOR TOURISTS AND LOCALS
Seychelles celebrates African heritage at FetAfrik event
May 22, 2014
The Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, Alain St.Ange, has sent a strong message to the Seychelles population at large about being proud of the island's multiculturalism as he was being interviewed live on the 5:30 pm popular SBC (Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation) radio program on the coming FetAfrik, the Africa Day Celebrations. Minister St.Ange said Seychelles is a sovereign country with multi-ethnic roots, which stretches from Africa, India, and China to the European civilizations. He reiterated that it is because of these branches of rich civilizations that Seychelles now has its blend of “melting pot of cultures,” known throughout the world as the proud Creole people of the Seychelles.
“We should be proud of our past, because it’s our past that gives us what we are today as a nation. It is our past that gave us hope for the future. Our nation is an example to the world, because we live in unity together as one people despite the color of our skin, despite our religious beliefs, and despite our political affiliations. We should not be shy to spell out our connection to our historical past, and this week as we celebrate our FetAfrik, our Africa Day celebrations, we should be proud that part of our historical past is made up of African blood,” Minister St.Ange said on the Seychelles national radio station (Seychelles Broadcasting Cooperation) in a live interview just days prior to the official opening of FetAfrik 2014. The Minister said that FetAfrik is the Seychelles way of recognizing its African heritage.
Live on national radio, Minister St.Ange did not hide his deep conviction that it was time for Seychelles to give a new dynamism to FetAfrik. Responding to a comment by Jules Hoareau, presenter of the show, that FetAfrik had been a “dying event” that has been rejuvenated, Minister St.Ange said when he and PS Benjamine Rose took up the portfolio of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, they were also at the same time mandated to ensure that FetAfrik was brought to new heights.
“It’s correct to claim FetAfrik was not up to the level we would have wanted it to be. In 2013, we revamped it. We brought in a fashion designer and a chef from South Africa. We brought in a delegation of Masai warriors from Kenya, and we also brought in a famous artist from South Africa. This year we’ve succeeded in bringing in a world-renowned fashion designer from Niger with a deep connection with Mali, a chef from Zambia, a DJ from Kenya, and a cultural group from Nigeria. We are bringing African culture in all its forms to Seychelles because our African heritage dictates that we celebrate Africa Day. The Ministry of Tourism and Culture’s role remains to ensure that as a country we proudly celebrate all our historical links, and this week it is our attachment with the African mainland.”
Africa’s success story was highlighted in the live radio show with the presence of Alphadi, the highly-acclaimed international fashion designer and Founder of FIMA, a world-renowned festival for the promotion of African fashion. Alphadi spoke of his struggle to use fashion to give a new image of Africa. He says that through fashion, Africa can attain economic progress.
“The Seychellois are supposed to be like me, be proud of what you are. Seychelles is part of Africa and everyone should be working together to preserve this part of your island's heritage which has been influenced by the rich links with the continent. Africa is a beautiful continent. Africa is us,” Mr. Alphadi said.
Alphadi spoke about how he used fashion to collect funds for the development of young people in Africa.
“For the past twenty-five years, I have been working for the development of African fashion. With the International Festival of Fashion designer (FIMA), we held a fashion festival in the desert of Niger. This allowed African designers to come together with other top designers of the world such as Yves Saint Laurent, Jean Paul Gauthier, Kenzo, and Paco Rabanne to stimulate creative talents in Africa. We’ve extended it to a fund-raising event, “Telethon,” where we collected money to develop young designers in Africa. In Africa, we have a lot of raw materials to create our brand. Seychelles also can have its brand of jeans, perfumes, etc.”
Benjamine Rose, the Principal Secretary of Culture, who was also present on the radio show, detailed FetAfrik’s program and appealed to the public to come down in large numbers and celebrate the island's African heritage. FetAfrik 2014 kick starts on May 23 with the official opening at the National Cultural Centre in Victoria.
Ghana & Seychelles set to cooperate in tourism and in culture
May 21, 2014
Seychelles and Ghana are on the right footing to open up new avenues of cooperation between the two countries, especially in tourism and culture. Ghana’s historical link to Seychelles dates back to 1900 when King Asantehene Prempeh I and his entourage were exiled to Seychelles. This part of Ghana’s history which is well planted and protected in Seychelles history was one of the issues of discussions raised between Hanna Serwaah Tetteh, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, and Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, during a courtesy call held at the offices of Minister St.Ange at the National Cultural Center in Victoria
During the meeting, Minister St.Ange brought Minister Hanna Serwaah Tetteh way back in history when the Prempeh family was in Seychelles and said the island through its archives and museums have kept alive this part of its culture. Minster St.Ange touched base on Venne’s town dark historical link to Africa, where slave children’s education was taken under the wings of missionaries. Impressed with Seychelles’ history of Ashanti people and slavery, the Ghanaian Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration said the Ashanti is a very well-reputed people in Ghana. She said there’s a lot Seychelles and Ghana can do together to protect this rich historical link. The participation of Ghana at the 2015 FetAfrik in Seychelles is now being discussed, and Minister St.Ange also spoke about how Ghana can work together with the Seychelles Tourism Academy to enroll students in language courses.
The Seychelles Tourism Academy and Ministry of Tourism are studying the possibility of enticing Ghana students to study in the new academy currently under construction. Both countries expressed their many commonalities and how they need to work together to consolidate their respective tourism industry.
Seychelles Tourism and Air Seychelles hold joint press conference
May 21, 2014
Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, and Mr. Manoj Papa, the CEO of Air Seychelles, jointly chaired a press conference at the Hilton Hotel in Durban South Africa to update the press community of South Africa on the state of tourism of the Seychelles.
Miss Seychelles 2013 Agnes Gerry and two Air Seychelles cabin crew were on hand to welcome the press to the conference that had been jointly organized by David Germain and Marsha Parcou of the Seychelles Tourism Board in South Africa and Josie Michaud-Payet and Cindy Vidot of Air Seychelles.
David Germain, the Seychelles Tourism Board Director for Africa & the Americas, welcomed everyone to the press conference, and it was Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, who opened the press conference with an overview of the Seychelles tourism industry and the importance of South Africa as a tourism source market. The Minister also explained to the room packed with journalists, the friendly ties that existed between Seychelles and South Africa. Minister St.Ange touched on South Africa KwaZulu Natal having been a joint co-host of the past April Carnaval International de Victoria in Seychelles.
"South Africa has been and remains an important target market for the Seychelles tourism industry. We welcome South Africans to our shores. You need no visa to land in Seychelles, a destination that is safe and where you will see many South African businesses are today well established in Seychelles. We are but some four hours away from South Africa and have for South African holidaymakers the best in sun, sea, and sand breaks; big game fishing; in sailing; in island hoping; etc. Our arrival figures from South Africa have been growing steadily, and we count on you, our friends in the press, to increase the visibility of our mid-ocean islands to the population of South Africa," said Minister Alain St.Ange.
When he took the floor, Mr. Manoj Papa, the CEO of Air Seychelles, said today, Air Seychelles and South African Airways were working in codeshare agreement. "We have made it easy for South Africans to travel to Seychelles. We have turned our airline around from one suffering from serious financial difficulties but a couple of years ago to a profitable airline nowadays. We are consolidating our network and will be flying to Paris, France, soon. We are also relooking at introducing new regional routes in the near future," said the CEO of Air Seychelles.
An open session of question time followed, where both Minister St.Ange and Mr. Papa answered questions from the floor.
Seychelles and South Africa set to cooperate in sports tourism
May 20, 2014
Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, has signed an MOU with Mr. Kirschlee Naidoo from Insane Fitness & Nutrition, Pretoria, South Africa, on the sidelines of the recent INDABA Tourism Trade Fair which was held in Durban from May 10-12, 2014.
The aim of the MOU is to develop, promote, and strengthen joint relationships between the Ministry of Tourism and Culture of Seychelles and Insane Fitness & Nutrition in sports tourism as a niche market in South Africa.
Through the different marketing and promotion projects that Insane Fitness & Nutrition is currently involved with in South Africa, Seychelles would automatically be promoted. For instance, cooperation with regards to the 2015 Carnaval International de Victoria of the Seychelles is already in the planning phase, whereby a group of elite athletes and fitness models are being prepared and selected to be part of the South African sports delegation who will travel to Seychelles to be part of the carnival. Mr. Naidoo says: “It is a privilege for me to be partnering with the Seychelles Tourism Board in being one of the main promoters for the 2015 edition of the Carnaval International de Victoria of Seychelles in South Africa, and at the same promoting Seychelles as a sports tourism destination which I believe will attract more South Africans to the Seychelles archipelago.”
Another area of interest, which the Seychelles Tourism Board in South Africa is initiating, is to develop golf tourism as a niche market. The idea is to attract golfers to the designer golf course at the Constance Lemuria Resort on the island of Praslin in the Seychelles and make an annual golf tournament in Seychelles in partnership with other stakeholders in the industry. To bring more value to the golf tournament, Mr. Naidoo is introducing “Cross Fit Training” to the tournament. Mr. Naidoo said: “A Cross Fit program applies to all individuals, no matter what your age or fitness level. Our training approach emphasizes fundamental, functional movements with proper technique, basics first. By utilizing ever-changing workouts, a combination of bodyweight, weightlifting, and high-intensity drills, you will experience fitness first hand.”
Insane has already establish a good working relationship with the Seychelles Tourism Board Office in South Africa, and through the MOU this would be further consolidated. Marsha Parcou, the Seychelles Tourism Board Regional Manager for South Africa, said: “Tourism is one of fastest-growing and competitive industries in the world, therefore, in order to maintain our market share, it is important to synergize our marketing efforts with other stakeholders in order to achieve our marketing objectives.” She further added: “When we look at forming a partnership with potential partners, it is not just about affiliation, it is about the passion, commitment, and positive contribution that they can bring to our existing strategies, and I believe that the Insane Fitness & Nutrition culture is a natural fit with ours.”
Minister St.Ange believes that these marketing campaigns will promote Seychelles as more than just a sun, sea, and sand tourism destination, but instead as one where the country's culture and their people are clearly positioned at the center of their development. "We thank Mr. Naidoo and the team at Insane Fitness & Nutrition for committing to work with Seychelles, the destination of choice today for South African holidaymakers. The presence of Mr. Naidoo and his delegation at this year's carnival helped to showcase the friendly ties Seychelles and South Africa today enjoy," said Minister St.Ange.
New Vanilla Islands President succeeding in tourism vision
May 19, 2014
Didier Robert, the President of the Regional Council of La Reunion Island, has been working tirelessly to position the mid-ocean island of La Reunion on the tourism map. The island is next door to Mauritius, the Seychelles, Madagascar, Mayotte, and Comoros, with natural attractions that include an active volcano and mountains described as the “Switzerland of the Indian Ocean.” But La Reunion's tourism industry had been stuck with only metropolitan France as its main and only source market, while the other islands of the Indian Ocean opened their doors to the big wide world of tourism.
This was the situation President Didier Robert inherited when he came to office a few years ago as the new President of the Regional Council of La Reunion.
The La Reunion President of the island's Regional Council knew of the challenges facing his island that was bound by the rules and laws of France as they remain a French territory. The challenges included the visa regulations of Europe which complicated lives of non-Europeans wanting to visit La Reunion Island. Tourists preferred to visit the other neighboring islands where no visa complications existed. Air access was another major challenge as all decisions were taken from Paris for the mid-Indian Ocean island.
These challenges pushed Didier Robert to play a leadership role in the re-launching of tourism for his La Reunion Island. He was a founding member of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands Regional Organization and became a committed partner working alongside Mauritius, Seychelles, Madagascar, Mayotte, the Comoros, and Maldives for the development of the tourism industry of the region.
Last week, Didier Robert's efforts started to reap the benefits for La Reunion Island as he was elected to the position of President of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands. This will help get La Reunion more visible and help it become relevant in the world of tourism. "I am succeeding in my vision for the tourism industry of La Reunion island. What I am doing will help the islanders of La Reunion when the tourism industry of the island grows," said Didier Robert after his election to the position of President of the Vanilla Islands.
Didier Robert replaces Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, who headed the Regional Organization for two consecutive mandates.
SEYCHELLES TOURISM CARVES CARNIVAL NICHE
Carnival a must-attend annual event
May 18, 2014
The Carnaval International de Victoria that is staged annually in the Seychelles during the last weekend of April has become a must-attend event because of the diversity of culture parading together in the smallest and one of the safest capital cities of the world. “7 Magazine” of La Reunion has just published their report on the 2014 edition of this carnival staged in the mid-ocean islands of the Seychelles, and if pictures do speak a thousand words, then the report safely says that the 2014 edition of the Carnaval International de Victoria was another resounding success.
Twenty six international delegations, inclusive of Notting Hill Carnival of the UK, the Brazil Carnival, the Dusseldorf Carnival of Germany, the Carnival from Indonesia, and the Carnival from Trinidad & Tobago, as well as cultural troupes from the Community of Nations were eager to showcase their country through culture, and in so doing through their very own population.
The 2014 edition of the Seychelles Carnaval International de Victoria that was jointly co-hosted by Seychelles, La Reunion, Madagascar, Mayotte, and South Africa KwaZulu Natal and has been described by the respected Canadian Journalist Carol Perehudoff as follows.
Carol Perehudoff writes following her stay in Seychelles covering the 2014 edition of the Carnaval International de Victoria: "Sometimes the things you think you know turn you upside down, dunk your head in the Indian Ocean and make you see reality in a different cinnamon-scented way. This is how the Seychelles Carnival changed my perspective about carnivals, and how I came to believe that the Seychelles Carnival can change the world.
Three days ago this is what I thought: A carnival is a great big party!
Today, this is what I think: A carnival is a great big party! But it can also do so much more. The Seychelles Carnival can change the world, one little float at a time.
And how, you may ask, can the Seychelles Carnival change the world?
The recipe for changing the world through a carnival is simple: Don't make it one carnival, no matter how proud you are of your culture. Make it the Carnival of All Carnivals.
Bring in floats, dancers, acrobats and performers (and journalists) from all over the world, and presto, it becomes the Olympics of the carnival world.”
Tourism Authorities promoting their country as the destination of choice are all descending on Seychelles with their own cultural troupe, because they are seeking press coverage from the large number of international press who make this the annual pilgrimage to the Seychelles to cover the carnival.
Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, said that through the Carnaval International de Victoria that is staged annually in the Seychelles, tourism destinations are using their culture to be seen and to be counted as destinations with more than just glossy brochures. "Putting one's culture in the forefront brings depth to one's destination," Alain St.Ange said as he closed the 2014 edition of the carnival in Seychelles. "When one's culture is showcased, we are putting our people at the center of our tourism development," the Minister of Tourism and Culture of the Seychelles said. To the press present, Minister St.Ange also quoted Mahatma Gandhi’s famous saying: "The culture of a nation lives in the heart and in the soul of its people," adding that it was, therefore, the duty of every government through their responsible minister to place their people at the center of the development of their respective tourism industry, because this is a sure way to bring out their unique culture.
Madagascar & Seychelles will cooperate with joint tourism actions
May 18, 2014
This is the declaration made by Mr. Eric Koller, the President of Madagascar Tourism, and Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture.
Mr. Koller and Minister St.Ange met on the sidelines on the International Tourism Fair of Madagascar held last weekend in Antananarivo. Both Madagascar and the Seychelles are active member states in the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands Regional Organization, and both want to see the consolidation of the tourism industry in the region.
Air Madagascar is currently finalizing its plans to launch flights to the Seychelles, and this opens the door for tourism representatives of the two islands to develop twin-center packages with Madagascar, the big island of the Indian Ocean and the Seychelles. Madagascar has been welcomed back into the Community of Nations since its last elections that saw a new democratically-elected President come to power. Madagascar now says that they are ready and willing to work with reliable partners who believe in the spirit of togetherness for a better future.
Mr. Eric Koller was personally in Seychelles in April when he led the Madagascar delegation to the 2014 edition of the Seychelles Carnaval International de Victoria, which they also jointly co-hosted alongside Seychelles, La Reunion, Mayotte, and South Africa KwaZulu Natal. Minister Alain St.Ange, who was in Madagascar leading the Seychelles delegation to the International Tourism Fair of Madagascar, said that it was important for member states of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands Organization to come together for events that appear on the organization's Calendar of Events, because this remains the best way to raise the visibility of the islands by working together in showcasing the diversity of the culture of the Indian Ocean region.
Kenya’s shooting star will be in Seychelles for the annual Africa Day Celebrations
May 18, 2014
The annual Africa Day Celebrations – FetAfrik - has taken on a new dimension since last year with the Ministry of Tourism and Culture and the FetAfrik Organizing Committee going out of their way to bring a taste of mainland Africa to Seychelles. This year, the FetAfrik celebrations will have once again have a Kenya influence. DJ Kalonje might not be what Seychelles party goers would describe in their “jargon” as the island’s hottest DJ, but his far-reaching success in Africa has made him today one of Kenya’s ultimate DJs. Surfing his auto biography, one would conclude that DJ Kalonje is indeed talented. Like most DJs in the entertainment industry, he can work up a crowd and possesses the art of cutting, beating, juggling. and scratching.
But what is impressive about DJ Kalonje is how only at the age of 27, he has been able to conquer Kenya’s DJ industry and emerged as a shooting star and a source of inspiration for young Africans. In this age where competition is fierce in the DJ industry, one of the hardest things to keep is your print, especially for young people.
George Wawer, alias “DJ Kalonje,” has found the perfect ingredient of staying not only in the race, but he is outshining his competitors. When he started in the entertainment industry, almost a decade ago now, DJ Kalonje developed a unique sense of luring the crowd, no matter what age, to the beat of his DJ mixing. That was his secret to success. A personal attribute contributed to make him the recipient, for two years in a row, the best DJ of the year for the CHAT award (2010-2011).
No matter where he is performing, or what crowd he is performing for, DJ Kalonje has his special tricks to get the crowd on their feet. His charm always gets the best of him. Seychelles will be his latest testing ground. DJ Kalonje will have to prove in FetAfrik 2014 that he can conquer the heart of the Seychellois public and drive them to the mercy of his mixing beats.
DJ Kalonje will performed in a free DJ Fiesta at Staduim Car Park on May 24 with Seychelles shooting stars in the DJ industry. The show will start at 9:30 pm. Everyone going to Victoria for FetAfrik, the Africa Day Celebrations, watch out for DJ Kalonje.

Seychelles supports International Tourism Fair of Madagascar on Vanilla Islands calendar
May 16, 2014
Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, personally led the island's delegation to the International Tourism Fair of Madagascar last week.
This event appears on the calendar of events of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands as the event put forward by Madagascar. Minister St.Ange was being accompanied in Madagascar by Mrs. Miera Savy from the Department of International Relations in the Minister's own office; Ms. Nathalie Didon, the Deputy CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board; and Ms. Christina Cecile from the Marketing Department at the Tourism Board.
Madagascar was itself present at the Seychelles carnival last April and was even one of the co-hosts of the event. Mr. Eric Koller, the President of the Madagascar Tourism Office, personally led the Madagascar delegation to the carnival in Seychelles.
To date, four events appear on the Calendar of Events of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands. These are the Carnaval International de Victoria of the Seychelles (April), the International Tourism Fair of Madagascar (May), the Cultural & Gastronomic Festival of the Comoros (August), and the Festival Liberte Metisse of La Reunion (December). Following the Vanilla Islands Ministerial Meeting held this week in Madagascar, it was resolved to increase the visibility of the region's Calendar of Events by advertisements in inflight magazines of all airlines serving the region.
Madagascar Tourism invited a number of tour operators from the region's main source markets, and they all toured the International Tourism Fair before being taken for a tour on the unique selling points of Madagascar. A decision adopted by the Madagascar Ministerial Meeting of the Vanilla islands will bring valuable support for the event as from next year. Mr. Pascal Viroleau, the CEO of the Vanilla Islands, will now be making arrangements to ensure that a number of international press from selected tourism source markets are aware of the event. "This will ensure more visibility for all the events appearing on the Calendar of Events of the Vanilla Islands," said the Seychelles Minister Alain St.Ange, when the proposal was being tabled for consideration at the Ministerial Meeting.

Tourism Board of Seychelles launches new diving book
At official book launch - Sherin Naiken, Glynn Burridge, Imran Ahmad & Alain St.Ange
May 15, 2014
The Seychelles Tourism & Culture Minister, Alain St.Ange, formally launched the Seychelles Tourism Board’s latest addition to its suite of coffee table books on the destination during the press conference aboard the island’s luxury fast ferry “Cat Cocos” on April 24.
This most recent publication, “Seychelles: Unexpected Treasures,” is a coffee table book featuring a stunning selection of photos that showcase Seychelles as a diving destination and is already being hailed for the quality of its production.
The photographer behind the book’s extraordinary images is Singaporean Nikon Professional Photographer, Imran Ahmad, one of the rising stars of the international photography scene with a growing reputation for his innovative technique.
The project was born out of a perceived need to produce a book to showcase the attributes of Seychelles as a diving destination via a spectacular suite of images, many of which were taken on and around the UNESCO World Heritage site of Aldabra.
Alain St.Ange and Tourism Board Chief Copywriter and Consultant, Glynn Burridge, collaborated to produce the book, bringing their co-authorship of Seychelles’ coffee table books to four editions. The Tourism Board’s Production Department’s Michel Agrippine and Graphic Designer Eileen Hoareau also offered their expertise, ensuring that the book was produced with the requisite level of excellence.
Such is its quality that “Seychelles: Unexpected Treasures” is being entered in an international competition for excellence in printing by Emirates Printing Press who printed the book and also in another international competition for books on diving by the photographer, Imran Ahmad.
“This book is a collector’s item and is destined to grace the homes of diving aficionados the world over,” claims co-author Glynn Burridge, “and it will do a great job in promoting Seychelles both as a dive destination and as a place to visit. It has also given us the idea of producing a similar edition on the destination in general, using the same approach.”
The book was launched in front of some 140 members of the international press attending the 2014 Carnaval International de Victoria where copies were on display aboard the fast inter-island ferry “Cat Cocos.”
Alain St.Ange, the co-author of the book and Minister of Tourism and Culture of the Seychelles, said that the book today stands tall among any collection of dive books. "We are proud to have collaborated to bring out such a selling tool for Seychelles. We, of course, thank Imran Ahmad for the use of his most stunning photographs. Today, because of this great coffee table book, more people than ever before can appreciate the underwater world of Seychelles," said Alain St.Ange.
After the official launch of the book, photographer Imran Ahmad presented Minister Alain St.Ange with a framed autographed print of the picture used on the cover of the book.
Seychelles works to claim share of French tourist market
May 15, 2014
Bernadette Willemin, the Seychelles Tourism Board Paris-based Director for Europe, continues to be innovative as she works with her team to claim her fair share of French holidaymakers.
Bernadette Willemin, was in Seychelles last December for the 2013 Marketing Meeting when the island’s private sector sat with the Tourism Board to map out the plan of action by the Tourism Board for the following year. "This public-private sector partnership is and will remain important in how Seychelles manages its tourism industry," Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, said when he opened the last session of this annual meeting.
The successful work by all the overseas offices of the Seychelles Tourism Board is a bit the result of this planning meeting. Bernadette Willemin in Paris stated to the Le Quotidien that it is a first for 35 travel agents of France to be taken to Seychelles by Promo Agence and the Seychelles Tourism Board so that they discover why this should be a destination of choice for French holidaymakers. A program called “My Seychelles” is being supported by Air Seychelles, Etihad, and Beachcomber and Constance Hotels. A total of 1896 travel agents enrolled in the program to get the chance to travel to Seychelles, out of which the 35 were chosen.
Travel agents have again confirmed that Seychelles remains the dream destination for not only visitors from France but also for themselves, the travel agents of France.

Vanilla Islands Ministerial Meeting held in Madagascar declared successful by all
May 14, 2014
Six islands of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands gathered in Antananarivo Madagascar for the May Ministerial Meeting of the Vanilla Islands Regional Organization. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, who is also the sitting President of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands and chairing his last meeting of his mandate.
For the first time, all the six islands of the initial grouping of the Vanilla Islands - Comoros, La Reunion, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mayotte, and the Seychelles were present for the meeting. Maldives was the only island being recorded as being absent.
The main item on the agenda was the election of the next President of the Vanilla Islands to take over from Minister Alain St.Ange who was ending his second mandate as the head of the organization. Many points were tabled and discussed including the endorsement of actions undertaken by the organization since the Seychelles Ministerial Meeting in April.
The meeting also approved the move to make the Calendar of Events of the Vanilla Islands more visible by seeking to advertise the events of the islands in airline magazines on planes serving the region and especially on those based in the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands.
The support by the Vanilla Islands for press to cover the events by member states was also discussed and approved.
The coming Indian Ocean Rim Association meeting in Seychelles in October by the UNWTO and ICAO Ministerial of Tourism and Transport Ministers and the April 2015 UNWTO Commission for Africa meeting that will also be held in Seychelles just before the Seychelles Carnaval International de Victoria were discussed and entered as important events to be supported by the Vanilla Islands.
Minister Alain St.Ange closed the meeting by thanking all member states for the support extended to him during his two terms as President of the organization. "It was demanding, it was also not easy, but we are here today with an organization that is on a firm footing," said Alain St.Ange, the outgoing President of the Vanilla Islands.
With a vote of thanks and a resounding round of applause, the formal Ministerial Meeting of the Indian Ocean Vanilla islands was closed, and the assembly called to elect the new President of their organization.
Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Tourism and Travel Mart to be held in Seychelles
May 14, 2014
It has been confirmed that the Seychelles will be hosting the 2014 Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Tourism and Travel Mart which will be held from September 19-21, 2014.
The aim of the 2014 Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Tourism and Travel Mart is to bring together policy makers and stakeholders in the tourism and travel industry. This will include both the Seychelles, regional and international tourism organizations, travel agencies, hotels, tour operators, and airlines under the same roof.
The Tourism and Travel Mart is also an opportunity to bring together tourism ministers of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) member states which would be the perfect occasion to discuss the possibilities of strengthening and expanding the region’s tourism industry.
Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, has personally written to ministers of tourism from the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORC) to invite them to attend and participate actively in this important regional event.
The decision for the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) to host their Tourism and Travel Mart in Seychelles was taken when Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, met with the IORC Secretary General, Mr. K.V. Bhagirath, at his organization’s headquarters in Mauritius. The Indian Ocean Rim Association is a 19-nation group pushing for regional cooperation.
India, Bangladesh, Australia, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mozambique, Oman, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Seychelles, and members of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) with China, Japan, Egypt, France, and Britain have the status of dialogue partners in the group.
During the meeting in Mauritius in 2013 between Minister Alain St.Ange, the Minister of Tourism and Culture of the Seychelles, and Mr. K. V. Bhagirath, the Secretary General of the Indian Ocean Rim Organization (IORA), the strengthening cooperation between the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORC) and the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands Regional Organization was also discussed as it now accepted that the importance of the Indian Ocean, the world's third largest as a trade corridor and energy highway, is being seen as undeniable as it provides passage to half of the international container ships and more that 70 percent of crude and oil shipments. The potential for tourism growth and its expansion within the Indian Ocean region was also discussed, as these remain massive. The meeting in Mauritius followed the Vanilla Islands Ministerial Meeting in Madagascar on the June 1, 2013 after Minister Alain St.Ange of the Seychelles had been re-elected to a second term of office as President of the Vanilla Islands following a joint motion presented by La Reunion, Madagascar, Comoros, and Mayotte for the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture to consider leading the organization for a second year.
The appeal then by the Seychelles Minister for the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) and the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands to cooperate together prompted the Secretary General of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) to confirm that the tourism ministers of its member states would come together at the Tourism Mart in Seychelles in 2014 to discuss how to strengthen and expand the region's tourism industry. "The tourism mart will not only open new avenues for our region, but it will further strengthen and solidify the Vanilla islands Organization in its quest to generate more visibility and growth in tourism," Mr. K. V. Bhagirath, the Secretary General of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), said.
Minister Alain St.Ange of the Seychelles has said that he was thrilled to be welcoming member states of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) to the Travel Mart in Seychelles. "We are a good destination to be used as the example to showcase tourism. Our tourism industry remains the pillar of our economy, and yet we have managed to remain environmentally friendly and develop a sustainable style of tourism. We are not after mass tourism, but prefer the personalized approach to tourism development as we continue to protect over 50% of our total land area as national parks," Minister St.Ange of the Seychelles said.
Indaba Tourism Trade Fair of South Africa declared a great event by Seychelles
May 14, 2014
The Seychelles delegation attending the 2014 Indaba Tourism Trade Fair has left Durban saying that it was a great success. It was Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, who personally headed the delegation from the islands to the biggest tourism and travel trade fair of Africa.
David Germain, the Seychelles Tourism Board's Director for Africa and the Americas, and Marsha Parcou, the Tourism Board’s Manager for Africa, were both on hand working with the island's private sector trade to ensure that Seychelles remains relevant on the South African market.
Seychelles was very visible at this latest trade fair with many one-to-one meetings headed by their Minister responsible for Tourism, but they also staged a big and very successful press conference at the Hilton Hotel at the fairgrounds.
Indaba was the opportunity for the Savoy Hotel of the Seychelles to be seen by South Africa tour operators. This new property situated right on the beach at Beau Vallon is now ready to start receiving guests, and their sales team was on hand to showcase the property.
"We came to Indaba, because we value South Africa as a tourism market for Seychelles. The importance of this tourism trade fair for our islands meant that I personally lead our delegation. Now that Air Seychelles and South African Airways are working together on a codeshare agreement, we are better placed than ever before to work on this important target market. Indaba 2014 was a great edition for Seychelles, and every single member of the tourism trade present worked together to promote the Seychelles in South Africa. Our Miss Seychelles was with us to ensure we continue down the path of putting our people at the center of our tourism development. She did well and was loved by members of the press present at Indaba," said Minister Alain St.Ange.
SESSION HELD DURING TOURISM INDABA
Seychelles Tourism Minister congratulates South Africa on Ministerial Session
May 13, 2014
Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, has said that South Africa needed to be congratulated for bringing tourism ministers from Africa for an annual Ministerial Session.
Last week, Minister Marthinus Van Schalkwyk, the Minister of Tourism of South Africa, invited Ministers attending the 2014 Tourism Indaba Trade Fair in Durban to the inaugural Ministerial Session that will now be held annually to coincide with Indaba.
The Indaba Tourism Trade Fair of Durban in South Africa remains the biggest travel trade show in Africa and it has been in existence since 1984. Indaba had been the tourism trade fair for only SADC (Southern African Development Community) Member States but this has now changed to become the tourism trade fair for the African continent, making it the Pan African travel and trade platform.
Minister St.Ange of the Seychelles said that the inaugural Ministerial Session which was chaired by Minister Van Schalkwyk of South Africa and attended by AU (African Union) Commissioner Mrs. Dlamini Zuma attracted a large number of tourism ministers from Africa, including Pascal Viroleau, the CEO of the Vanilla Islands of the Indian Ocean, who was in South Africa for the annual Indaba tourism fair.
"We all know that Africa needs to work with Africa if our tourism industry is to be consolidated. This is why the theme chosen for the inaugural Ministerial Session Africa - Ready for Business - was so appropriate. This is also why the open discussions by the Ministers of Tourism present was so rich and interesting," the Minister of Tourism and Culture from the Seychelles said.
"We need to congratulate Minister Marthinus Van Schalkwyk of South Africa for staging this event. We need such opportunities to interact, and it was an added bonus to have had the African Union Commissioner present as well. We all discussed our challenges as we saw it, and we were all able to place it in the context of our continent. This was also the opportunity for the CEO of our Vanilla islands to put the views of the Indian Ocean Islands forward," Minister Alain St.Ange of the Seychelles said.
Tourism Ministers from Africa present all said they were there because they believed in South Africa as a target market and wanted to see Africa pursue joint strategies for the consolidation of the continent's tourism industry.
Seychelles Tourism Minister addresses Tourism KwaZulu Natal Indaba
May 13, 2014
The Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, Alain St.Ange, was invited to address the audience of a special Indaba 2014 business breakfast hosted by KwaZulu Natal Tourism at Durban's Hilton Hotel on Saturday, May 10.
In the presence of Tourism Ministers from Lesotho, Swaziland, and Uganda, and Ministers of the KwaZulu Natal Government, Minister St.Ange's address followed speeches by the Deputy Mayor of Durban, the CEO of KwaZulu Natal Tourism, and ROUTES Director, Katie Bland.
Against a background of a perceived need for Africa to work more with Africa, particularly in the domain of aviation, Minister St.Ange appealed for African nations to partner with each other and synergize more in the interests of furthering African tourism interests. Citing the great success of Seychelles' recent 2014 edition of the Carnaval International de Victoria that is now co-hosted by La Reunion, South Africa KwaZulu Natal, Madagascar, and Mayotte, the East3Route partnership between KwaZulu Natal, Swaziland, Mozambique, and Seychelles, and the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands partnership between the Comoros, La Reunion, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mayotte, and the Seychelles of the southwestern Indian Ocean, the Minister spoke of a new way forward for African nations working together as never before.
"You may think me a dreamer, but I'm not the only one," he said, quoting singer John Lennon's famous line and referring to a new approach that is needed to enable Africa to capitalize more efficiently on its huge tourism assets.
His speech was greeted warmly by the audience and was followed by an address by KwaZulu Natal's Minister Michael Mabuyakhulu who endorsed many of Minister St.Ange's points, pointing towards a deepening of the friendship between Seychelles and KwaZulu Natal. Minister St.Ange then presented his counterpart with a copy of the limited edition book “Seychelles, Unexpected Treasures,” the newly-published book by Minister St.Ange himself and Glynn Burridge on the underwater world of Seychelles, and in turn Minister Alain St.Ange was the recipient of a gift from Minister Michael Mabuyakhulu commemorating the life of President Nelson Mandela, the South Africa icon.

Seychelles FetAfrik 2014
May 13, 2014
With drastic improvement clearly noticed in the organization of FetAfrik 2013, the FetAfrik Organizing Committee has announced the 2014 edition of this celebration will be driven by a breath of fresh air.
In the last couple of weeks, the committee has been working hard to keep FetAfrik 2014 and event that will make Seychelles proud, as it sits now firmly on the Ministry of Tourism and Culture’s annual calendar of events.
Unveiling FetAfrik 2014 to the Seychelles media, Alain St.Ange, the Minister for Tourism and Culture, said FetAfrik 2014 is the annual opportunity for Seychelles to celebrate its cultural ties with the African continent.
“The time has come for us to again celebrate our link with mainland Africa. For this FetAfrik, we will see the participation of different groups from Africa. This is to ensure that we appreciate our very own cultural diversity as we see what the world showcases as their own,” Alain St.Ange, the Minister for Tourism and Culture said.
This year, the FetAfrik Organizing Committee is bringing from Kenya, DJ Kalonje, a reference in the DJ industry in Africa, to showcase his art of mastering beat juggling and scratching.
Clinching the CHAT Award for best DJ of the year, two years running (2010-2011), George Waweru, alias DJ Kalonje, one of the most sought-after DJs in Africa, is sure to bring some serious beats to FetAfrik.
From the African Great Lakes region of East Africa, the Organizing Committee has also been able to get from the West Coast of Africa, in particular Niger, a hidden pearl in the fashion industry. He is called Alphadi. Some even go as far as dubbing him the “Magician of the Desert,” because of his masterful collections. Alphadi needs no introduction. His works can be seen so easily on Google search engines. As famous as he may be in Europe and Africa, Seychelles is yet to be familiarized with Sidahmed Seidnaly’s collection “Alphadi line.”
Sidahmed Seidnaly’s sophisticated and brilliant collection combines his Touareg root with contemporary western techniques.
Alphadi’s achievements have enabled him to collect numerous titles: Knight of the Order of Merits in France, Commander of Arts and Culture in Niger, and Best African Designer Award by the prestigious French Federation of Haute Couture and Pret a Porter.
Alphadi’s collection will be modeled by Seychelles’ Coral Models’ charming ladies at this year’s Gala Dinner and promises to elevate this edition to a new level.
The Organizing Committee of FetAfrik wants to strike again with the concept of the Gala Dinner, a success of last year’s edition. The stars of the night, besides Alphadi, will be an international chef from Zambia, Musama Kaloto Chamunda, who runs two restaurants in Zambia under the brand of Twapandula Restaurant Limited. A musical band is also being attracted to come to this year's FetAfrik, but details of this have yet to be revealed by the Committee.
The popular African Bazaar will also return this year with a kaleidoscopic of artifacts. The African Bazaar is the ideal platform for the African community living in Seychelles to revisit their cultural artifacts and showcase them to the public.
FetAfrik is all about the fusion of African and Creole culture. This concept is more than ever apparent in the 2014 edition. The official opening is designed to show the celebrations of both cultures. Whereas on a more serious note, the FetAfrik 2014 cultural talk will explore “African Influence in the Indian Ocean.”
The event will launch on May 22-25 and will culminate with a Gospel Show to celebrate Africa Day.
FetAfrik 2014 is a celebration of Africa’s success stories.

This is indeed good news for our tourism industry which remains the pillar of our country’s economy. Emirates has been a strong partner, and the increase of flights to double daily shows the commitment of the airline to the Seychelles. It also indicates Emirates’ belief that the Seychelles tourism industry is today, more than ever before, on a firm footing,” said Alain St.Ange, Minister of Tourism and Culture for the Seychelles.

Cooperation between South Africa KwaZulu Natal & Seychelles set to grow
Mr Desmond Golding, Minister Alain St.Ange & Mr. Sadha Naidoo at the working breakfast on May 9
May 09, 2014
The cooperation between South Africa KwaZulu Natal and Seychelles is set to grow.
Seychelles and South Africa have enjoyed a good friendly relationship. Seychelles sits in the middle of the Indian Ocean and shares the same Indian Ocean with South Africa.
For the April 2014 edition of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands, South Africa KwaZulu Natal was a co-host of the event alongside Seychelles, La Reunion, Madagascar, and Mayotte Islands. KwaZulu Natal authorities took the opportunity of the working visit of the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, to Durban on the occasion of the INDABA Tourism Trade Fair for them to meet with Minister Alain St.Ange and discuss future cooperation between South Africa KwaZulu Natal and Seychelles.
Mr. Sadha Naidoo, Board Chairman of Tourism KwaZulu Natal, and Mr. Desmond Golding, the Head of Department Economic Development & Tourism at the Department of Economic Development & Tourism from the Province of KwaZulu Natal, hosted a working breakfast for Minister St.Ange at the Beverly Hills Hotel at Mlanga Rocks in Durban. Present among others at the breakfast meeting was Mr. Ndabo Khoza, the CEO of Tourism of KwaZulu Natal.
The feedback from the participation of the province at the 2014 edition of the Carnaval International de Victoria in Seychelles was tabled and future areas of cooperation discussed.
It was agreed that a formal MOU be signed between the Province of KwaZulu Natal and Tourism KwaZulu Natal with the Seychelles Ministry of Tourism and Culture to pave the way for a working visit by Mr. Desmond Golding to Seychelles at the end of May. Mr. Golding is set to be accompanied by a delegation of South Africa business community representatives on this working trip.
Seychellois children hit by carnival fever
May 08, 2014
It is now part of the historical notes that the Bel Eau Primary School, with its theme of “Stationary and Kindergarten,” were the winners of the inaugural Kiddies Carnival held at Freedom Square on the traditional Family Fun Day, the Sunday morning of the 2014 Carnaval International de Victoria.
The cute little kids were dressed as pens, pencils, and other equally-important stationary they use daily at school. And to reward their effort, they walked away with the R 3,000 and a trophy.
To note this is the first time the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB), together with the help of Lima Calbio and Michel Benoit, have joined forces to organize a segment in the Carnaval International de Victoria celebrations targeting children specifically. “If you introduce the carnival spirit to your children, your carnival will go on forever,” said Lima Calbio, a popular soca singer from Trinidad and Tobago.
Held at the Freedom Square in Victoria, the Kiddies Carnival was a welcome addition to the Family Fun Day – which traditionally takes place on the third day of the Carnaval International de Victoria. To note, the launch of the Kiddies Carnival had sparked an immense interest in school children aged 5 to 12, who worked with their teachers to come up with the most original costumes and themes. Keeping in line with the country’s policy of safeguarding the environment that has attracted record-breaking numbers of visitors to its shores, the schools taking part in the Kiddies Carnival used recycled materials to create their costumes. It must be said that the end results were breathtakingly colorful.
While Bel Eau primary school’s theme and costumes earned the school the highest points from the judges, Anse Aux Pins School came out second, and the Plaisance School third. There were 3 special prizes won by Anse Aux Pins School (spirit of carnival), Mont Fleuri School (creativity), and Independent School (greatest number of participants).
Others also taking part in the inaugural Kiddies Carnival included Vijay International Praslin School, Montessori Pre-Schools of Bel Air, Beau Vallon primary School, Takamaka primary School, Mont Fleuri primary School, Cascade primary School, Mont Buxton district Neighborhood Recreational Activity club, Independent School, Au Cap primary School, Bel Eau primary School, Plaisance primary School, International School Seychelles, and Baie Lazare primary School.
As part of the judging process, the floats paraded and gave a dance performance on stage in front of the panel of judges who included British High Commissioner Lindsay Skoll and Designated Minister Vincent Meriton. They then went onto the field to be closer to members of the general public who could take pictures and even capture the scenes on video, generally joining in the fun spirit of carnival.
So as not to feel left out of the celebrations, children who happened to be present at Freedom Square on Sunday were also treated to turns on the bouncing castle set up close to the stage. Many present at the Kiddies Carnival were clearly entertained by live music as they waited for the official closing ceremony, as well as the show of the youngsters strutting their carnival stuff.
The international press have described this event as a carnival school in its own right. Press reports have commended Seychelles for the initiative and said that this remains the best way for the Indian Ocean Islands to continue to develop their own brand and style in the world of carnivals.
Seychelles Carnival can change the world
May 08, 2014
Carol Perehudoff writes following her stay in Seychelles covering the 2014 edition of the Carnaval International de Victoria: Sometimes the things you think you know turn you upside down, dunk your head in the Indian Ocean and make you see reality in a different cinnamon-scented way.
Bring in floats, dancers, acrobats and performers (and journalists) from all over the world, and presto, it becomes the Olympics of the carnival world.
Get creative with your carnival recipe
While you are free to add your own favorite spices (the Vanilla Islands being an excellent choice) the best recipe for the Carnival of Carnivals includes Brazilian dancers, a Zydeco band, Sami tribe singers from Sweden, Chinese acrobats on stilts, girls in Cowgirl outfits (I never did figure out what they were doing here, but they sure were happy and energetic and you had to smile just looking at them).
You will also want to add Maasai warriors, delegates from Dusseldorf in outfits that look a little like marching band uniforms with gold tassels on the shoulders and maybe a couple of ladies in swan outfits.
Do not forget the dancers
Of course you'll want Notting Hill carnival dancers from London with costumes even skimpier than the Brazilians - actually no, I take that back, no one can get a skimpier spanglier outfit than a Brazilian carnival dancer.
While we're at it, bring in Trinidad and Tobago and Bhutan and Indonesia. And South Korea! I could go on, but my point is: by bringing together all these countries in a spirit of talent and unbelievable fun, the Seychelles Carnival can change the world.
Smacked on the head by a warrior
The first knock on my head that changed my outlook about carnivals came when I was waiting to board a ferry for the pre-opening ceremonies and a dancing Maasai warrior swung his head around and smacked me in the face with his big reddish black braids. (At least he didn't thrust his spear at me like he did with another guy!)
Pre-opening ceremony
Then our group of journalists, Seychelles business owners and dignitaries, including Mr. James Michel, President of the Republic of Seychelles, boarded our Creole Travel Services ferry for an island sunset tour over Silhouette Island.
The speech that changed my world
During the cruise there were speeches and the second smack on my head came when Alain St.Ange, the Minister for Tourism and Culture for the Seychelles, gave an opening speech.
The Seychelles Carnival can change the world and so can a speech
I am not good with speeches. And once the speeches started (because I am a horrible person) I started thinking I was going to zone out (and don't say you never think the same thing, because let's face it, most speeches are snooze city), but then Alain St.Ange, the Tourism Minister started to speak and that's when I was tossed upside down, just as if a big white salty wave caught me and hurled me around and around.
Carnival transformation
When I came up for air my perspective about carnivals had changed and I came to believe that the Seychelles Carnival can change the world.
Alain St.Ange's speech was possibly the best speech I've ever heard (and from someone who’d been looking forward to a little nap due to jet lag, this is saying a lot). The thing is, his message was so beautifully simple: The world can unite through culture.
The little carnival that could
That's why the Seychelles Carnival, the Carnaval International de Victoria, can change the world, because it's a celebration of every culture together.
And all these cultures descend on the Republic of the Seychelles in the city of Victoria, which is the tiniest capital on the planet, and mix with local floats and singers and some of the hottest ambassadors on the planet (hello, Miss Reunion!) and local islanders, to, in Alain St.Ange's words, "Bring Asia, Africa and the world together on the world's smallest islands."
Craziest mix of harmony ever
I swear, I'm getting teary just thinking of that speech. But imagine it! An explosion of cultures, colors, tribal chanting, reggae, zydeco, drummers, traditional Asian music and marching bands mixing with the sun, sand and palm trees of the gorgeous Seychelles, and you have the Seychelles Carnival that can change the world.
And this is only the pre-opening day!
Make dance not war
If you ask me, President Michel and Tourism Minister Alain St.Ange are visionaries. And maybe you can't quite get the feel of the spirit of internationalism unless you're here, but just seeing Parisians talking to Mauritians and Australians hanging out with Kenyans and locals hanging out with everyone was the most crazy cosmopolitan happy mix I've ever witnessed.
Tourism beyond palm trees - though palm trees are nice, too.
The Carnaval International de Victoria is co-hosted with Madagascar, Mayotte, South Africa KwaZulu Natal and La Reunion. Even so, I don't truly understand how a little speck in the ocean (okay a lot of specks, the Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 little islands) can organize such a huge carnival (5th largest in the world).
The Seychelles Carnival is a brilliant tourism idea and, to paraphrase Alain St.Ange's speech, helps bring us to a point where we can all live in harmony beyond color of skin, to live in peace with each other - and where once you've landed you cannot go back.
And who wants to go back?
Now that I've landed on the Seychelles and learned that the Seychelles Carnival can change the world, one little float at a time, I don't ever want to go back either!
So let's get rhumba-ing and I'll sum up with Alain St.Ange's words about why the Seychelles Carnival can change the world: "Because we can have one rhythm and all the nationalities can dance to it."
So start moving.
Plan ahead for Seychelles Carnival 2015
I'm telling you now, get with the world unity and make your plans to come for Seychelles Carnival 2015. To help you, read 10 Essential Seychelles Travel Facts and visit the Seychelles Tourism Board website.
Air connectivity key to seizing Africa’s tourism potential
May 07, 2014
UNWTO African Members States, gathered on the occasion of the 56th Meeting of the UNWTO Commission for Africa, highlighted the need to have better coordination between tourism and air transport policies to fully explore the tourism sector’s capacity to deliver on growth and development in the continent. The meeting also discussed the on-going poaching crisis in Africa and its negative impact on tourism (April 28-30, 2014, Luanda, Angola).
Over the last decade, international tourist arrivals to Africa have repeatedly outgrown results in other regions. By 2030, Africa’s international tourist numbers could grow from its current 56 million to 134 million and a rising number of African countries have embraced tourism as a priority for their development.
Against this backdrop, participants at the UNWTO Commission for Africa Meeting and the corresponding Seminar on ‘Tourism and Air Connectivity in Africa’ discussed how to overcome existing barriers to advance Africa’s tourism, including travel facilitation, air connectivity and infrastructure development.
“Tourism accounts for 7% of all exports in Africa and 58% of its service exports and is one of the most important sectors for the economies of the continent”, said UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai. “Yet to fully realize the potential tourism has in promoting growth and development in Africa, it is imperative to work towards a better alignment of tourism and air transport policies in the region”, he added.
The lack of consideration of tourism benefits and coordination between the tourism and aviation sectors, producing suboptimal air transport and tourism policies, infrastructure limitation, unsuitable taxation and restrictive visa policies, were identified as the main factors hampering the development of both tourism and air transport in Africa.
The Seminar laid the groundwork for the first UNWTO & International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Tourism and Transport Ministerial Conference for Africa (October 14-15, 2014, Mahé, Seychelles).

Indian Ocean press rally to showcase Vanilla Islands Carnival as event giving great visibility
May 07, 2014
As newspapers from around the world continue to bring out articles with glowing reports on the 2014 edition of the Carnaval International de Victoria that was this year co-hosted by Seychelles, La Reunion, Madagascar, Mayotte, and South Africa KwaZulu Natal, the press from the Indian Ocean are also continuing to keep the islanders from the group of the Vanilla Islands well informed.
L'Express Mauritius and the Madagascar Tribune have now both come out with more carnival-related articles. The Madagascar Newspaper cites the event falling in the list of the official events of the Vanilla Islands which is why Madagascar participated by having Eric Koller, the President of Madagascar Tourism, present in Seychelles.
L'Express of Mauritius gave on its part a rundown on the prizes for the delegations in the Carnival Parade itself which was this year won by China.
Last year, Mauritius won second prize in the international delegations which was the first time an Indian Ocean island had come out among the top three delegations in the carnival parade. This Mauritian delegation at the 2013 carnival was being led by Shenaz Omarjee of the MTPA (Mauritius Tourism Promotional Authority).

The Seychelles Tourism Board has been working on this potential market for the last couple of years and the interest by tour operators selling the “Big Five Safari” option of Africa who are now promoting the Seychelles as a “must” addition.
The delegation at the WTM Latin America Tourism Trade Fair returned satisfied with optimism that this potential market will deliver benefits for the Seychelles tourism industry.
Seychelles Minister leads delegation to INDABA Tourism Trade Fair in South Africa
May 06, 2014
Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, has traveled to South Africa where he will be leading the island's private sector delegation to INDABA, the Tourism Trade Fair in Durban South Africa.
South Africa and the neighboring countries of Southern Africa remain important tourism markets for Seychelles, and this has grown in importance ever since SAA (South Africa Airways) entered into codeshare agreements with the islands’ Air Seychelles.
This year, South Africa KwaZulu Natal was a co-host of the Seychelles annual Carnaval International de Victoria alongside La Reunion, Madagascar, and Mayotte islands. This demonstrated the friendly ties that exist between the two countries and also the level of cooperation that exists between these two SADC countries.
Minister Alain St.Ange will be holding a press conference while in Durban and is set to fly back to Seychelles on Sunday.

The now visible East3Route organization within the Southern African Community comprised of KwaZulu Natal of South Africa, Swaziland, Mozambique, and the Seychelles met the business community in Seychelles last week on the sidelines of the 2014 Carnaval International de Victoria in Seychelles. The catch phrase for that day's seminar was "One Seminar Four Countries - a Wealth of Opportunities" as the four countries came together to open doors for the business community of the region.
It was Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, who had the pleasure to welcome everyone to Seychelles for this meeting that also showed the way in the spirit of cooperation. Minister St.Ange retraced the path taken for the Seychelles to be admitted by South Africa KwaZulu Natal, Swaziland, and Mozambique into the East3Route organization. Minister Alain St.Ange congratulated the solidarity behind the East3Route concept initiated by former President Nelson Mandela of South Africa, H.E. the King of Swaziland, and President Chisomo of Mozambique and said that it was the duty of each of the four countries to now continue to build on the foundation initially set by the three heads of states.

The meeting was considered to have been a real success.
“Carnival of Carnivals” to put climate response in the spotlight
May 06, 2014
HAWAII, USA; BRUSSELS, Belgium; VICTORIA, Seychelles; BALI, Indonesia - The 4th edition of the Carnival International de Victoria was this year again a vibrant success, for the Seychelles and the Vanilla Islands. It gathered a record number of international delegations, each showcasing their own culture, but all expressing and spreading the same joy and good spirit of carnivals. It also involved the next generation in a big way with the “Kiddies’ Carnival,” for schools, with each class coming up with its own theme and making beautiful costumes out of used and recycled materials, designed to illustrate the vision of the nation for conservation and smart development.
A this occasion, a strong delegation of the International Coalition of Tourism Partners (ICTP) composed of its President Professor Geoffrey Lipman, its Chairman Juergen Steinmetz, and its Membership Liaison Marie-Julie Chaput were in attendance, on the invitation of Tourism and Culture Minister Alain St.Ange.
He said: “As one of the founders of ICTP, I am a firm believer in its mission of Green Growth and Quality. Our commitment as a nation is very clear in this regard, and our Carnival should be a major driver and showcase. We face a common challenge, with our Vanilla Islands partners, of responding to the reality of building a sustainable future against the disruptive backdrop of our rapidly moving world and the imperative of responding to a changing climate.”
Over the coming year, ICTP will work with the Seychelles Tourist Board (STB) and its stakeholders, as well as its partners to link leading edge international Green Growth thinking and Quality practices with the homegrown local action, in Seychelles and across the Vanilla Islands. And to do so from the grassroots joy and optimism of our “Carnival of Carnivals.”
Professor Geoffrey Lipman President of ICTP said: “This region, as much as any in the world, embodies all of the unique qualities of tropical island tourism, as well as all of the challenges of small island states who are in the front lines of the planetary response to climate change. It’s great to engage with the communities in such a positive way and particularly with the schools, where the idea of Green Growth is already well understood.” Lipman was just back from Canada where he took part in the 85th birthday of Maurice Strong, one of the fathers of the sustainable development movement and the man behind the 1992 Rio Earth Summit that set the stage for our common global response.
ABOUT THE VANILLA ISLANDS
The Vanilla Islands concept is the result of an affiliation of regional island nations: Seychelles, Madagascar, La Reunion, Mauritius, Comoros and Mayotte, who have formed an exciting new travel destination brand. Created in La Reunion on August 4, 2010, the aim of this co-operation is to jointly market the region rather than each member “going it alone” to gain market share from the competing tropical islands of the world.
ABOUT Seychelles Tourism Board
The Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) is the marketing arm of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture. They have their Head Office in Seychelles with regional offices in Paris, London, Frankfurt, Rome, Cape Town, Pretoria, Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sao Paulo, Moscow, Seoul, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai.
ABOUT ICTP

CNN announces dates to screen Seychelles carnival program
May 06, 2014
The 2014 edition of the Seychelles Carnaval International de Victoria will be screened on the CNN Inside Africa program on May 16, 17 and 18. CNN covered the carnival this year and it was Mary Rogers, the Producer and Camerawoman and Ian Lee as Correspondent who had traveled to Seychelles to cover the carnival that was this year being jointly co-hosted by Seychelles, La Reunion, Madagascar, Mayotte and South Africa KwaZulu Natal. This year some 26 International Delegations which comprised of the Notting Hill Carnival of the UK, the Brazil Carnival, the Dusseldorf Carnival of Germany, the Italy Carnival, the Carnival from Indonesia and the Trinidad & Tobago Carnival all paraded together followed by cultural troupes from the Community of Nations.
Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, has congratulated the countries who were represented by their cultural troupes saying that they were putting their culture and in so doing their people at the center of their country's development. "This year we had 151 members of the international press in Seychelles to cover the carnival and the visibility each delegation can get out of being present at the carnival is more than anyone can pull at any tourism trade fair. At the carnival in Seychelles one's culture and one's people are proudly showcased instead of just dishing out glossy brochures," said Minister St.Ange.
The April carnival in Seychelles is listed on the calendar of events of the Indian Ocean Vanilla islands alongside the Tourism Trade Fair of Madagascar of May, the Cultural & Gastronomic Festival of Comoros in August, and the Festival Liberte Metisse of La Reunion in December.
It has now been confirmed that the 2015 UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organization) Commission for Africa (CAF) Ministerial Meeting will be held in Seychelles at the same time as the 2015 edition of the carnival. The decision was taken at the 56th Session of the Commission for Africa Meeting that was held in Angola last week. "This will be a great opportunity for Africa as a whole to appreciate the Indian Ocean Event where one's culture is showcased as a marketing tool for tourism destinations," said the Seychelles Minister.
CNN will air the 2014 Carnaval International de Victoria of the Seychelles on the following dates:
Friday, May 16, 2014 at 0930 and 1630 GMT
Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 1030 and 1730 GMT
Sunday, May 18, 2014 at 0530 GMT
Seychelles second edition Arts Fair celebrates creative expressions
May 05, 2014
The Seychelles Arts Festival returned for its second edition with twenty four sculptures and artists combined with twenty four photographers lined up in the grounds of the National Cultural Centre in Victoria for the second edition of Arts Fair held May 2-3, 2014.
The Arts Fair which is officially cemented in the National Arts Council calendar of events, showcased a dynamic and inter disciplinary pool of different forms of arts and new opportunities of discovering new artistic talents and creative expressions.
The highlight was a new brand, “Mavrik,” a local appellation created by Seychellois artist Cindy Socrate, together with her counterparts.
Anne Roselness surfaced with a fascinating creation of glass painting.
National Arts Council said this edition was an ideal platform for artists to indulge in daily work of the Council. Jimmy Savy, Chief Executive Officer of National Arts Council said work of the council “should remain visible to the general public".
This edition of Arts Fair was offset with pouring rain, discouraging mass visitors. However it did not discourage artistes, sculptures, photographers, poets and musicians to come down in numbers embracing the unpredicted weather and sell their art works. Despite much enthusiasm among the National Arts Council team, second edition of Arts Fair felt short of becoming a thrilling success.
This event was also the opportunity for Minister Alain St.Ange, the Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture to meet the Chairperson of the different Creative Arts Associations and to discuss the opening of the Arts Gallery in the National Cultural Centre. Minister St.Ange has agreed to meet the artists in the coming month to set the dye for the Official Opening of the Arts Gallery which will also house the National Collection of paintings presently being kept in storage. The Minister toured all the exhibits accompanied by Mr. Jimmy Savy, the CEO of the National Arts Council and the Chairpersons of the different Creative Arts Associations.
Seychelles concerned about proposed African Union Hotel and Airline taxes
May 05, 2014
Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture returned home on Saturday saying that he was satisfied that the UNWTO Commission for Africa (CAF) Ministerial Meeting had been a success.
It was the Zimbabwe Minister Walter Mzembi, as the Chairman for the Commission For Africa of the UNWTO who chaired the Angola meeting attended by some twenty Ministers of Tourism from Africa and by as many Tourism Principal Secretaries and CEO of Tourism Offices. Mr. Taleb Rifai, the Secretary General of the UNWTO and Elsia Grandcourt, the Director for Africa at the UNWTO were also present in Angola for the 56th Session of the Commission for Africa (CAF) Ministerial Meeting.
"Many important points were table and discussed which showed the desire of Africa to work with Africa," Minister St.Ange of the Seychelles said.
Member States present at the Commission for Africa (CAF) Ministerial Meeting were all troubled by a proposed tax on air travel in Africa and a further tax on Hotel Stays. Ministers of Tourism present were surprised that they had not been consulted on these proposed tourism related tax saying that it would kill the goose that lays the golden egg. "We have all been lobbying for the UK to scrap their Carbon Tax for long haul travel saying that it was a disincentive for holiday traffic to Africa, and now we are seeing the African Union (AU) proposing just another tourism tax. It is hypocritical and it will hurt the tourism industry of Africa," Ministers present said.
The African Union (AU) proposal was discussed by Finance Minister of Africa, and the matter is set to be tabled at the Heads of State Meeting later this year.
Minister St.Ange said that he has discussed the matter with Minister Pierre Laporte, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Finance and Investment and can say that Seychelles has already recorded its concern on this new tourism tax for Africa.
It was at the Angola 56th Commission For Africa (CAF) Ministerial meeting that Taleb Rifai, the Secretary General of the UNWTO (Unite Nations World Tourism Organization) and Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture signed the Memorandum of Understanding in the presence of Boubacar Djibo, the Director Air Transport Bureau for the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to pave the way for Seychelles to host the Historic October Ministerial Meeting where Tourism and Transport Ministers will be sitting together for the first time for a meeting. This October Meeting in Seychelles is being jointly organized by the UNWTO and the ICAO.
It was also at the same Angola Ministerial Meeting the Seychelles won the bid to host the 57th Commission for Africa (CAF) Ministerial Meeting in April 2015. This meeting will coincide with the 2015 edition of the annual Carnaval International de Victoria, the event that appears on the calendar of events of the Vanilla Islands that is staged in the Seychelles.
Press around the world reports on successful Seychelles carnival
May 05, 2014
The Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands Carnival just ended a week ago and already the international press is coming out with their own glowing reports and reviews on the event that has taken the world by surprise. The event dubbed the “carnival of carnivals” by the world press remains the only carnival where all the best carnivals all parade together followed by cultural troupes from the community of nations. The last edition of this carnival that features on the calendar of events of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands was this year jointly co-hosted by Seychelles, La Reunion, Madagascar, Mayotte, and South Africa KwaZulu Natal.
Some 26 international delegations paraded in the 2014 edition of this Carnaval International de Victoria, and they were followed by some 25 local delegations all vying for the attention of the world press that had descended on Seychelles in large numbers. Some 151 members of the international press traveled to Seychelles this year for the carnival, and their reports have started to appear right around the world. Seychelles and the carnival co-hosts worked together for visibility of their respective countries through press reports, and the same goes to each participating country. Tourism Boards and Tourism Departments of countries serious in their development of tourism all worked hard to meet the press when they attend tourism trade fairs, but those participating in the carnival in Seychelles get direct access to press from their target market as they work to showcase their respective destinations using culture and in so doing their people instead of using the traditional glossy brochures.
Ms. Faten Aman Ali of the Middle East was one of the journalists who traveled to Seychelles for this year's carnival, and now she publishes her first report on the event that continues to make its mark as the carnival set to bring people of the world together as they parade in unity and harmony.
We would like to share Ms. Faten Aman Ali's carnival coverage in the link below:

Vanilla Islands of Indian Ocean stand together as co-hosts of Seychelles carnival
May 03, 2014
Eric Koller, President of Madagascar Tourism; Pascal Viroleau, CEO of the Vanilla Islands; Alain St.Ange, Seychelles Minister of Tourism & Culture and President of the Vanilla Islands; Attoumani Harouna, Vice-President of Mayotte Tourisme; Ariane Loup, Director La Reunion Tourism; Jean-Charles Bertrand, the Director of Agence Capricom and the Director of the Ile en Ile magazine and Editor of the Vanilla Island Magazine wrote the following about his stay in Seychelles during the 2014 edition of the Carnaval International de Victoria:
“The Vanilla Islands are more visible on the international scene because of this carnival in the Seychelles," said Pascal Viroleau, CEO of the Vanilla Islands. "This is a positive event for the Vanilla Islands. Look at the number of people everywhere. More than 50 delegations from Seychelles and the international ones have paraded together; more than 150 international press personalities came to Seychelles to cover this event. It was an opportunity for some delegations to meet the press they have in the past tried in vain to get to meet. We shall all be putting a monetary value to the press reports of such an event, but already when we see the quality of media who are in Seychelles such as CNN, BBC, CCTV, and when we know the cost to be featured by them per minute if one was to buy the airtime, now we shall all benefit much more than the few seconds - we just have to be overjoyed. The Vanilla Islands are, of course, seen, and they will be visible on the international scene.
“The main targeted objectives for the Vanilla Islands is to seek more visibility for the organization using the net and social media in a bid to achieve recognition of the brand and of the islands of this new tourism region. The second task for the organization is to get twin and three-center holiday packages promoted by tour operators. We already have good results from the work done so far, bearing in mind we have just started to get ourselves known. We are a young tourism region.
“The next rendezvous is the Salon International du Tourisme a Madagascar (the Madagascar Tourism Trade Fair) where some 50 tour operators have been invited. This time it is crucial for the Vanilla Islands to move its strategic plan into action and capitalize on the visibility campaign achieved from the Seychelles event and get the professional programming work to move islands being inserted into tour operator programs.”
"Rendezvous occurs in15 days in Madagascar for the next event of the Vanilla Islands," said Eric Koller, President of the ONTM (Madagascar Tourism). "It is another event of the Vanilla Islands like the carnival in Seychelles is. It is so important for Madagascar to see solidarity from the organization's member islands as we have done by being here in Seychelles. We are preparing our Vanilla Islands event in 15 days. This is the IFTM, the tourism trade fair of Madagascar. We are now back into the fold in the Community of Nations since our last elections. A time of real democracy with a democratically-elected President. This is key for the development of the tourism industry of Madagascar, and this is a message of appeal to the tourism professionals. 2015 will be the year to relaunch Madagascar. We hope to catch up on lost time, and we are confident to be fast receiving our visitor arrival numbers of 2008."
"Rodrigues was also present, and also Mauritius was present," said Marie Franchette Gaspard-Pierre-Louis, Deputy Chief Commissaire of Rodrigues. Marie said: "We are honored that Rodrigues Island was now able to take its rightful place in the Vanilla Islands. We have a different culture from the other islands, and I salute the quality of this Seychelles carnival. There are a lot of people; it is a real exchange between our islands and the different participating countries. We are hoping to be part of the carnival parade next year and to be better able to showcase Rodrigues Island.
“The concept of the Vanilla Islands is a great move and a great opportunity for us, because it will help us develop our region’s tourism industry. This will also help develop trade links between our islands. Our island of Rodrigues is pushing its own image of ecology and sustainable tourism. We are part of the Republic of Mauritius. If Rodrigues was at the carnival in Seychelles, it is also Mauritius that was present.”
China steals first prize at Seychelles Carnival for best international float
May 03, 2014
For the first time since its introduction in 2011, The Notting Hill Road Show Company has not won the Seychelles Carnival’s Best International Float delegation.
This year, the accolade went to the Hai Cheng Stilt dancers from China.
The performers dazzled members of the public with an array of acrobatic moves on “stilts” in their colorful and intricate costumes.
They blended their performances which included traditional opera, acrobatics, dance, and music.
Although the Notting Hill Road Show Company, which has won the title for the past three consecutive years, came out this year with all guns blazing, armed with a revamped theme, it didn’t stop China from taking the lead.
The Hai Cheng Stilt dancers from the authentic folklore Liao Nan province said the first prize symbolizes the greatness of Chinese culture.
The group based their participation on a great Chinese proverb “winning first prize is winning for friendship,” the most important is remaining in the lead of the competition.
Jean Luc Lai Lam, Seychelles Tourism Board Manager China, who brought the group to Seychelles, said the prize will “reinforce Seychelles’ visibility in the Chinese market.”
The 2014 Carnival procession for the international floats category was an intense contest between the twenty delegations from around the world.
The Notting Hill Road Show Company, unbeatable for the past three editions, took the second position, and Brazil‘s School O Samba was third. The Seychelles Ministry of Tourism and Culture and the Seychelles Tourism Board congratulated China for pulling the first prize, Notting Hill Carnival of the UK for taking second place, and Brazil's Carnival for winning third place. Representatives from the Ministry and Tourism Board said that they were so thankful for the big participation of international delegations in the 2014 edition of the Carnaval International de Victoria. The prize-giving ceremony was overseen by Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture; Sherin Naiken, the CEO of the Tourism Board; and Anne Lafortune, the PS for Tourism. The ceremony was witnessed by the Designated Minister, Vincent Meriton; Minister Mitsy Larue; and representatives from La Reunion, Madagascar, and Mayotte Tourism Offices, and well as by Pascal Viroleau, the CEO of the Vanilla Islands.
Masquerade Ball a la Seychelloise
May 02, 2014
Immediately after attending the official opening ceremony of the 2014 edition of the Carnaval International de Victoria, guests had more thrills awaiting them at the Masquerade Ball held at Eden Plaza.
Held in collaboration with the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB), the event was the brainchild of Organizers Seychelles, an events and public relations company based in Seychelles.
Over 250 revelers joined the party at Eden Plaza dressed in colorful costumes swaying to beats from the many delegations taking part in the 2014 edition of the Carnaval International de Victoria.
With Samba music blaring, local jazz group Collective Soul also belting out its more upbeat renditions, and drinks flowing abundantly, the first Masquerade Ball held for the Carnaval International de Victoria was certainly a merry event.
For those willing to add a few dance moves to their repertoires, there were also dance performances by various delegations who were to take part in the following day’s carnival parade. These included the Notting Hill of the UK, Mozambique, Brazil, Kenya, and KwaZulu Natal of South Africa.
However, the evening would not have been complete without a costume contest.
Dancing away to Collective Soul, those daring enough to don a fancy dress, were judged by a panel of anonymous judges.
In first place was Seychellois Mary Carbognin in her gold outfit, followed in second place by a “pirate” from California, and in third place by Maya from the Ukraine dressed up as the “snake lady.” A young girl, Victoria, dressed as a mermaid, won a special prize from Organiser Seychelles.
Meanwhile, the head of Organisers Seychelles, Neddy Nourice, described the event as a success as a large crowd turned up for the first edition of the event.
With the right mix of music, dance performances, and a large spoonful of Seychellois joie de vivre, the first Masquerade Carnival Ball, was indeed an event highlighting the concept of Seychelles as a melting pot of cultures.
It was Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, who had the privilege to address the gathered revelers. The Minister spoke after Neddy Nourice and the CEO of the Tourism Board had welcomed everyone to the Masquerade Ball. Minister St.Ange congratulated Organisers Seychelles for taking the initiative for organizing the Masquerade Ball. "The Ministry of Tourism and Culture and the Tourism Board stages such events as the Carnaval International de Victoria for the local business community to become innovative and develop side opportunities for their very own benefit," the Minister said.

May 02, 2014

The signature of the agreement was witnessed by Boubacar Djibo, the Director Air Transport Bureau of the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) and effected at the Commission for Africa (CAF) Ministerial Meeting in Angola.
About the joint Ministerial Conference between Tourism and Transport Ministers, the UNWTO stated: Tourism is considered as an engine of economic growth and development, especially for small and emerging economies. Intrinsically, tourism development has become a critical target for many governments, especially in developing countries. There is a general agreement that tourism is not only one of the most important export sectors that boost exchange earnings but also increases employment opportunities, prompt tourism industry growth and in virtue of this stands as a stimulus to the economy as a whole.
Reacting on the first edition of the UNWTO & ICAO (United Nations World Tourism Organization & International Civil Aviation Organization) Tourism and Transport Ministerial Conference to be held in Seychelles in October 2014, Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, said that the meeting between Tourism and Transport Ministers was overdue. "Seychelles salutes the effort by the UNWTO and the ICAO to make this Tourism and Transport Ministerial Conference a reality. We all know that it was needed and at the October Meeting in Seychelles a new page in history will written. As Seychelles we remain committed to unity as much in the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands and in Africa as we believe in unity in purpose to ensure that Tourism continues to make a major contribution to economic growth and development" Minister St.Ange said.
The Tourism & Transport Ministerial Conference is set to attract a very large number of Ministers to Seychelles this coming October. Tourism Organizations are also being invited for this historic meeting.

Seychelles Carnaval International de Victoria closes with standing ovation
May 02, 2014
The curtain has fallen on the fourth edition of the Seychelles Carnaval International de Victoria, and the Seychellois people rallied in numbers to proudly claim that they are the custodians of this “carnival of carnivals.”
Beyond the celebrations of a rich melting pot of cultures, the closing ceremony was an opportunity to salute local and foreign delegations who had paraded and danced so joyfully in the three-day event.
Alain St.Ange, Minister for Tourism and Culture, and the Sherin Naiken, the CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board, proclaimed that the event delivered all of its promises.
Minister St.Ange said the fifth edition of Carnaval International de Victoria has to strike a different tone from its previous four editions to keep the event even more visible.
Minister St.Ange announced that a South African radio station will be dedicating a special program on the Carnival, setting the momentum for the 2015 edition, whereas Lesotho and Mongolia have already confirmed their participation in the fifth edition.
Minister St.Ange said feedback on this year’s carnival from the international press who interviewed him was positive.
“The international press, such as BBC, CNN, and different French journalists, hailed the success of this edition. It is important for Seychelles that these comments are echoed from our international press. If they’ve claimed it’s a success, then I am pretty sure we’ve made it again this year to give Seychelles the best carnival ever. I would like to congratulate all Seychellois who came down in numbers to support this carnival. It shows that we’ve taken ownership of the carnival,” Minister St.Ange said.
Minister St.Ange said the fourth edition of Carnaval International de Victoria ended on a note of optimism and set the foundation for 2015’s fifth edition of Carnival International de Victoria.
World Wide Fund and Seychelles working together to promote marine conservation
May 02, 2014
Seychelles – The Seychelles Sports Fishing Club (SSFC) is pleased to announce that it is working with the World Wide Fund (WWF) to further promote conservation of the Seychelles marine environment through measures that will include the tagging and release of all billfish caught in selected future SSFC fishing tournaments.
The support by WWF, which has taken over one year to develop, will further enhance SSFC’s leadership position in the region and solidify its mission of promoting sports fishing in the country with the ultimate goal being the conservation of its billfish stock while promoting Seychelles as one of the best fishing destinations in the world.
SSFC was successful in introducing catch and release categories in two of its 2013 tournaments, and it was met with some resistance at first. However, SSFC pressed on with its plans and introduced trophy-based awards for the release of billfish as well as the use of video technology in such tournaments. The local anglers quickly adapted to the new techniques and today it has become the norm to release billfish instead of killing these magnificent pelagics.
“We are making tremendous progress in changing the mindset of our local sports fishermen in regards to the release of fish,” said SSFC’s Chairman Tarak Patel. “The SSFC/WWF relationship will further emphasize that catch and release needs to become an integral part of the sports fishing culture in Seychelles in order for us to protect the valuable resource that brings tourists to Seychelles,” he added. “Our annual SSFC tournaments are the ideal venues to advance this objective further, and our goal is to set the example so that our children will one day experience the same thrill of catching their first game fish like we did,” he concluded.
The SSFC/WWF cooperation will start with the 2014 Heineken Slam Tournament scheduled for June 28, 2014, followed by the Big Game Classic Tournament which will be held on November 29, 2014. In addition, the annual SSFC Junior National Fishing Competition will also incorporate similar catch and release rules in its format.
Dr. Wetjens Dimmlich, the WWF representative based in Seychelles who was instrumental in developing this new relationship, was pleased that an agreement had been reached: “WWF Smart Fishing Initiative is pleased to be working with SSFC in promoting tag and release. Recreational anglers can play an important role in adding to the scientific knowledge of fish species through effective tagging programs.”
The Executive Secretary of SSFC, Grant Heyer, who was the driving force behind obtaining WWF support, was also excited that his hard work had borne fruit. “It was first and foremost important for us to work with an organization globally recognized as a leading foundation in wildlife and environmental matters,” he said. “Working with WWF will help further strengthen our conservation message to our members and tournament participants, and will also expand to the juniors as they are the future generation of anglers, let alone conservationists,” he added. “Our club today is very proud of the gigantic steps that we have made so far in educating our local angling enthusiasts about the need to release billfish, and we will continue to strive for 100% release in all our future tournaments,” he concluded.
WORLD TOURISM ORGANIZATION MINISTERIAL MEETING AT CARNAVAL INTERNATIONAL DE VICTORIA
UNWTO Commission for Africa 2015 meeting heads for Seychelles during carnival
May 02, 2014
The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Commission for Africa (CAF) Ministerial Meeting 2014 that took place in Luanda, Angola, has voted unanimously to hold their 2015 Ministerial Meeting in the Seychelles. The meeting follows the call by Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, to bring the meeting to the Indian Ocean islands to coincide with the Carnaval International de Victoria of April 2015.
Some 20 African Ministers of Tourism were at the meeting of the UNWTO Commission for Africa Meeting in Angola which was meeting under the Chairmanship of Mr. Walter Mzembi, the Minister of Hospitality & Tourism of Zimbabwe. Present also at the meeting were Taleb Rifai, the UNWTO Secretary General, and Elsia Grandcourt, the Director for Africa at the UNWTO.
Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, said that this was great for the Indian Ocean region and for the Seychelles. "It will be a great opportunity to showcase the work by Seychelles to use culture and in so doing putting the people of the islands in the center of the tourism industry's development of the islands. The carnival in Seychelles remains unique, because it is the only carnival that continues to attract every important carnival of the world to parade together and alongside cultural troupes from the Community of Nations. The UNWTO Commission For Africa (CAF) Ministerial Meeting in April 2015 will be an opportunity for African Ministers to appreciate the importance for their country to be present and use the carnival as a visibility platform for their own tourism industry," said Minister St.Ange.
Minister St.Ange said that he needed to now encourage Ministers from Africa to be accompanied by their own cultural troupe when they fly to Seychelles for the 2015 UNWTO Commission for Africa Ministerial Meeting, because they will all be at the Carnival Official Opening Ceremony.
