Seychelles carnival float becomes tourist photo opp

The display at the Raffles Resort of Praslin in Seychelles

Jun 16, 2014

The island of Praslin in the Seychelles is known for its unique Coco-De-Mer Nut and for its endemic Black Parrot. It was not surprising to see the Raffles Resort of Praslin use these two iconic symbols as their attraction for their float in the 2014 edition of the Carnaval International de Victoria in the Seychelles.

The Raffles Resort of Praslin pulled the prize for the best local float at this year's carnival, and Christophe Ganster, the resort's General Manager, and his team earned so much visibility for their resort at Praslin and for the Raffles Resorts Group through their participation, and this Praslin resort is today more known in the world of tourism than they have ever been. But that is not the end of plusses for Christopher Ganster and his team at Raffles Resort of Praslin. They dismantled their float and took their reproduction of the giant Coco-de-Mer Nut and its male Catkin and the Black Parrot back to their resort and reassembled the lot in their upper lounge as a display to mark their participation in the 2014 edition of the Carnaval International de Victoria of the Seychelles.

Today, this display has become a photo opportunity point for guests at the resort. Last weekend, visitors at the resort were seen taking pictures of themselves next to the Raffles Resort version of the main icons of Praslin island. Christopher Ganster, the GM of the Raffles Resort, and his team at the resort on Praslin, should be congratulated for turning their float into a photo opportunity for their guests. In the 70s when a giant land tortoise nicknamed "Per Kobe" led the then carnival of Seychelles, the picture of this giant land tortoise made it on press reports about the Seychelles for years after that edition of the island's carnival. Today it is the team of the Raffles Resort of Praslin who is being congratulated for its initiative that is getting Praslin island seen and noticed as a tourism destination with unique icons.

Louis D'Offay and his son Lucas, the Managing Director and Managers of the beachside property, made time to showoff their environment-friendly approaches to Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture when he was on his hotel and guesthouse "door-to-door" visits on Praslin last week.

Minister St.Ange was being accompanied for his visit at L'Archipel Hotel by Sherin Naiken, the CEO of the Tourism Board, and by her Deputy CEO Nathalie Didon, and by members of the News Bureau of the Tourism Board.

The L'Archipel Hotel "Goes Green" approach the Minister was informed about came after two years of research and planning. The beachside property on Anse gouvernement land at Cote D'Or has now implemented numerous renewable energy solutions with a positive impact to the environment and improving guest effort. The project at L'Archipel Hotel has been passionately driven by Louis D'Offay with the undivided support from his team and PACE Seychelles who audited the energy consumption at the property to prepare a short-, medium- and long-term strategy for implementing green initiatives in Energy Management Systems (EMS), Solar Photovoltaic Panels, LED Lighting, Innu-Science Biotechnology Cleaning - Green Cleaning, and Ozone Wash Cleaning.

"Today," said Louis D'Offay, "L'Archipel Hotel is reaping the economic benefits from the environment-friendly approaches, and this Praslin island hotel is doing its fair share for a greener Seychelles."

Minister St.Ange said as he congratulated Louis and Lucas D'Offay that what was done at L'Archipel Hotel of Praslin needed to be encouraged everywhere on the islands. "Louis D'Offay of the L'Archipel Hotel has confirmed that he is savings on his electricity bills because of all the energy he was pumping into the Praslin Electricity Grid. He also said that his hotel guests were all not only supportive of his actions but were promoting his hotel through positive word-of-mouth referrals as one that was today an environmentally-property," said Minister Alain St.Ange.

Seychelles prides itself as being a leader in conservation with more than 50% of its land territory declared protected national parks and it is actions such as what has been implemented at the L'Archipel Hotel at Cote D'Or on Praslin that will help consolidate the drive by the government of the island to be seen to be environmentally friendly.

Mr Licudi has held discussions with the senior management team of the University of Seychelles and has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Pro-Chancellor of the University, the Minister for the Environment Professor Rolph Payet.

The Memorandum envisages co-operation between Seychelles and Gibraltar in matters related to the two universities and possible exchanges of students between the universities.

Mr Licudi discussed with Mr Adam matters of common interest including issues related to financial services. Mr Licudi also met with the British High Commissioner, Lindsay Skoll.

The visit to Seychelles has attracted media attention with a feature on local news including an interview with Mr Licudi.

Mr Licudi described the visit to Seychelles as invaluable. He said: “We have learnt how the University of Seychelles was established five years ago and how it has progressed during this short time. We have also had discussions on the lessons they have learnt during this process. I have been most impressed by the facilities of the University and what Seychelles has been able to create. I am even more excited now about our own university project having seen for myself how it can be done successfully in a small state.”

He continued “I am enormously grateful to the Government of Seychelles for the welcome they have given us and to the University of Seychelles for the generous way in which they have shared their experience with us. We very much expect to continue to cooperate with the University of Seychelles and have already discussed student exchanges and the creation of a joint university programme which could be carried out in both jurisdictions.”

Jun 13, 2014

Seychelles is all set to gain unparalleled global exposure, as a high-quality television and film production hub across Africa, Europe, and Asia. The Seychelles islands, often described as a piece of Heaven on Earth with breathtaking natural beauty, keeps fascinating film production houses in search of inspiring backdrops. In recent years, renowned film production houses in Europe and Asia ventured onto Seychelles shores in search of the perfect location to shoot love stories.

The latest is the “Promise,” an affair beyond love, to be shot in Seychelles in July and August 2014. In a further path-breaking and unique association, a multi-national collaboration between Seychelles, Sri Lanka, and India, about an emotional love story, “A love like this,” is expected to be shot in the islands. The latter is partly filmed in Seychelles and Sri Lanka.

The films will be directed by Chandran Rutnum, a renowned Hollywood director with thirty years of experience, whose success is also recognized globally. His latest film, “A Common Man,” was released in 2013 with Sir Ben Kingsley and won numerous global awards. He also worked with stalwarts like Steven Spielberg and other notable Hollywood personalities.

The films with a fitting tagline, “A love story in Seychelles,” will showcase the island nation across three continents, thirty-five countries, and more than forty million people. This initiative is an endeavor to achieve the twin objective of turning Seychelles not only into a hub for high-quality television production in Africa, Europe, and Asia, but also to increase the visibility of the islands as a tourism destination with a difference. An intrinsic part of the association is the first television and film award in 2015 co-hosted by the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) and Africa Film Factory and a telenovela that will be produced later this year.

The films will be co-produced in close partnership with the Seychelles National Radio and Television Station, Seychelles Broadcasting Cooperation (SBC), and Africa in Film Factory (A High Street Reverie initiative). Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation is working in close partnership with one of its broadcasting partners in Africa, South Africa Broadcasting Association (SABA), to develop channel content and raised the telenovelas visibility worldwide.

This all-encompassing project was presented by Antoine Onezime, Chief Executive Officer of Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation, and Rahul Nehra, Joint Managing Director of HSR to the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, to seek the ministry’s support for the shooting of these films which will add a different dimension to the country’s tourism industry. The proposition was presented to Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture; Anne Lafortune, Principal Secretary for Tourism; and Nathalie Didon, Deputy Director of the Seychelles Tourism Board.

Minister St.Ange gave his blessing to the project and said, “I welcome this collaboration, which could be a great initiative in helping to further raise the Seychelles visibility right across the world and bring a whole new dimension to our tourism initiatives.” He further added that during his proposed India visit in August, this collaboration of films, TV, and awards would be promoted and facilitated as a key joint initiative between Seychelles and India.

HISTORICAL TOURISM IN VENN'S TOWN

Kenya Minister visits Slave Ruins in Seychelles

Jun 12, 2014

Mra Amina Mohamed, the Cabinet Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kenya, and her delegation were given a tour of the Slave Ruins of Venn's Town Mission Lodge at Sans Soucis in Seychelles by Minister Jean Paul Adam, the Seychelles Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture.

Also present at Venn's Town were Benjamine Rose, the PS for Culture; Anne Lafortune, the PS for Tourism; Maxwell Julie of the Seychelles Heritage Foundation; and senior protocol officers from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The visit follows the discussions between Minister Amina Mohamed of Kenya and Minister Alain St.Ange of Seychelles on the continued work by the Seychelles authorities to get the Slave Ruins of Venn's Town Mission Lodge declared a World Heritage site. Minister St.Ange briefed Minister Amina Mohamed on the establishment set up to receive young slaves as they were being freed at the abolition of slavery. After lengthy discussions and after her visit to the historical site, the Kenyan Minister offered her support to help push the Seychelles application forward.

Minister Amina Mohamed said that she was impressed by the continued desire by Seychelles to work to protect this unique site that harbors so much history of the macabre side of the past.

Ministers Adam and St.Ange also discussed with Minister Amina Mohamed the proposition for Africa to declare African historical sites and label them. "It is time for our continent to be seen to be protecting what is dear to us before we ask the world at large to recognize what we have as historical sites," the two Seychellois Ministers said. The same idea is being floated by Kenya, the Minister also said.

From the Slave Ruins of Venn's Town Mission Lodge, the Kenyan delegation was hosted to a Creole dinner at the Ephelia Resort where Madame Marietta Matombe and her national cultural troupe performed especially for them.

The Kenyan Minister has formally invited by Minister Alain St.Ange to address the July Economic Forum in Kenya where President Kenyatta and his colleagues from the East African Community would be meeting.

Winners from Next Hot Model UK win trip to Seychelles

Jun 09, 2014

The two winners from the Next Hot Model UK have won a trip of a lifetime to Seychelles which will be the location for their first professional photo shoot.

Budding models, Daisy and Robert, were chosen ahead of 22 other finalists in a beautiful Grand Final Catwalk held last night at the Hilton Brighton Metropole in Brighton.

The final of the competition was attended by a delegation from Seychelles which was the partner destination of the night and the Chief Executive of the Seychelles Tourism Board, Sherin Naiken, was also a guest judge at the event.

This is the second year running that the winners of the competition will be heading to Seychelles for their photo shoot, and the organizers have thanked the Seychelles Tourism Board for supporting them in making this happen.

Throughout February and April, the annual Next Hot Model UK competition have held heats across eight of the major towns and cities of the South, from Portsmouth to Brighton and up to Crawley, in a bid to find aspiring and unsigned models who dream of going on the catwalk and entering the glossy world of high fashion.

The final on Saturday was an exciting opportunity to show their talents in front of the UK’s media and fashion experts.

Congratulating the finalists, the founder and creator of the competition, Fatosh Kalan, said Next Hot Model UK is a unique concept where they look for a “hot girl and guy” who are looking to break into a modeling career. She added that in conjunction with London fashion agency PRM, the final was also a fantastic opportunity for all finalists to gain experience and exposure to promote themselves.

“Besides winning exclusive modeling contracts from London PRM model agency, the winners will also be jetted off for a week of pure luxury in the islands of Seychelles where they will receive a photo shoot of a lifetime,” she said.

The final included Catwalk 1 which was a male and female introduction with the RTH London Clothing, Catwalk 2 was a casual wear by Profile Fashion Clothing, Catwalk 3 was a swimwear with Café Bleu Shirts, and Profile Fashion Clothing and Catwalk 4 was evening wear by Profile fashion Clothing.

Ms. Naiken said the Seychelles Tourism Board felt honored to be invited to attend the event and even more so, to be represented on the panel of judges. She said the Tourism Board will be working with the organizers now to plan their photo shoot which will take place in September.

“After a successful photo shoot last year, which won us a lot of coverage in the fashion and lifestyles magazines in UK, the organizers approached us again in January, informing us that they would like to offer their winners a trip to Seychelles again this year,” she said.

“It is a pleasure for us to work with them again, and we would give all our support to ensure the photo shoot will be another success and Seychelles will benefit from the visibility that would come with it.”

USALAMA 1: Increasing African border security

BY PROF. DR. WOLFGANG H. THOME, ETN AFRICA CORRESPONDENT | JUN 08, 2014

Member states of EAPCCO and SARPCCO, short for Eastern – and Southern respectively – Africa Police Cooperation Organization, last week came together to conduct a two-day exercise covering both airports and seaports, where available, in an attempt to improve border security and align systems of detection of contraband cargos and items carried in checked in luggage.

Supported by Interpol, immigration, customs, regular police, and other security organizations from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Seychelles, Tanzania, Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Sudan, participated, while from the Southern African region it was Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The results, findings, and recommendations of the two-day intensive surveillance and practicing mission will be discussed in Mahe in July when the two organizations will hold a joint meeting in the Seychelles, which presently holds the chairmanship of EAPCCO through Police Commissioner Ernest Quatre.

Ships docking at seaports as well as aircraft and disembarking passengers were subject to added screening procedures which involved the use of sniffer dogs helping to detect contraband, drugs, blood ivory, and other prohibited items.

Commented a regular tourism source in the Seychelles: “From what we learned, the exercise went smooth. We know that there is a high level of security already in place at the airport, mainly because we do not require visitors to apply for visa in advance, we welcome any nationality without visa requirements. But that also means that we have to have systems in place that our hospitality is not abused by letting in criminals wanted elsewhere posing as tourists. It is a question of our country’s reputation to be a safe and secure destination and our customs and immigration officials; besides other security organs, are doing a good job in keeping the Seychelles safe. We are not aware that the two-day exercise caused any arriving tourists to complain or object.”

It is further understood that similar exercises will be carried out at random dates, only communicated hours before swinging into action to further improve border security at airports and seaports with land borders to follow on the African mainland.

Up-and-coming British pop talent Arlissa holidays in Seychelles

Jun 06, 2014

One of the hottest new artists to shine in Britain this year has returned from holidaying in the Seychelles, calling it the best holiday of her life. London-based singer, songwriter, and model Arlissa departed a still-chilly London for the tropical climate of the Seychelles on May 21, according to her official Twitter account.

The singer tweeted a picture of her group standing on a beach against a purple and red sunset, saying, “Just came back from the best holiday of my life so far... gonna miss everyone so much! #Seychelles #dontcryA.”

20-year-old Arlissa, who last year was signed to rap mogul Jay-Z’s Roc Nation record label, shared a number of Instagram snaps of herself and her model pals enjoying the luxury of poolside villas and sun-kissed beaches.

It is believed that the group stayed at the exclusive Four Seasons Resort at Baie Lazare, Southern district on the main Seychelles island of Mahe before moving on to the Raffles Hotel on the second most-populated island of Praslin later on in their stay.

Arlissa was featured on the prestigious BBC Sound of 2013 list alongside other newcomers making waves in the music industry and last year was featured on a track by American rapper Nas called “Hard to Love Somebody” and also featured in the music video.

Arlissa’s singing style has been compared to legendary singers Adele and Florence Welch, and she shares a manager with popular Barbadian singer Rihanna, so it is possible we could be seeing the British beauty achieve great things in the future.

“Sticks and Stones,” the first song from her debut album, was released in March to positive reviews, while the full album is still awaiting release by Roc Nation.

SEYCHELLES TOURISM REAPING REWARDS

The Escapades Seychelles - France 2014: Another successful harvest

Jun 06, 2014

The 11th edition of the dedicated Seychelles Roadshow - Escapades Seychelles - took place in France from June 2-5, 2014. As always, this event was extremely well supported and turned out, by Seychelles partners, French tour operators, journalists, and travel agents.

The Seychelles’ train-and-dine events took place in Lille, Lyon, Toulouse, and Biarritz where a most successful turnout of the French travel trade graced the Seychelles delegation with their presence.

The Seychelles delegation consisted of the Seychelles Tourism Board France European Director: Bernadette Willemin accompanied by Marketing Executives Christine Vel and Jennifer Dupuy, Etihad Airways/Air Seychelles: Kathleen Payet and Laurent Couturier, Banyan Tree Seychelles: Samuel Gacos, Beachcomber Ste Anne Resort and Spa: Veronique Ibrard et Norbert Couvreur, Bird Island: Serge Robert, Constance Hotels Experience: Virginie Fimbel, Hilton Seychelles: Devi Pentamah, Coco de Mer Hotel and Black Parrot Suites: Ash Behari, Domaine de l’Orangeraie and Cat Cocos: Guillaume Albert, Denis Private Island and Indian Ocean Lodge: Melanie Felix, Desroches Island: Elise Boisson, Pure Seychelles Hotels: Daniella Payet Alis.

For an event to be so well supported by both its partners and the travel trade alike, over the many years of its existence, goes to show that the right mixture of ingredients were used to create this perfect marketing recipe and tool of success, said Bernadette Willemin the European Director of the Seychelles Tourism Board. She also added that it is very important to host such dedicated Seychelles events abroad, thus bringing these beautiful islands into the lime light and forefront together with the united help of its trade partners.

As one of the partners attending this event consecutively for the past 11 years, “It is overwhelming and heartwarming to see that the Escapades Seychelles event still grows from strength to strength, continuously attracting an increasing number of agents, tour operators, and their sales teams, who are constantly interested in improving their knowledge and expertise in marketing and selling our products, and destination accordingly,” said Ash Behari, Director Hotel Coco de Mer.

As for Norbert Couvreur, General Manager – Beachcomber St. Anne Resort and Spa, he said: “Being a part of this event is important to see the hard work and efforts put into marketing the destination and products by the various marketing persons. That is why it is most important for us, from an operational perspective, to compliment these efforts with great service and hospitality once guests arrive within the destination, so that they may leave with impressions that would last them a lifetime.”

With high-tech, giant screen presentations, culminating with a state-of-the-art, 3D destination feature, the images and descriptions of these beautiful islands brought home the message of what makes Seychelles unique and sets it apart as a destination of choice among the French, and the reasons why they should experience the variety and diversity of what this country has to offer.

This annual event not only delivers the impact of the beauty of the Seychelles and the various reasons to visit, but also creates an amazing bond between the tourist office and its partners, who together as a team stood side by side in this the 11th edition of the Escapades Seychelles, proudly presenting travel to the “Seychelles… another world.”

Seychelles tourism looks forward to another decade of hard work, support, dedicated motivation, and further success in growing and maintaining the French market in its pole position it enjoys, on the podium of successful sales to the Seychelles. The next series of this event in France will take place at the beginning of June 2015.

In the meantime, this delegation moves further afield, to neighboring Belgium and The Netherlands for another promotion in this series.

Seychelles Tourism Minister meets with Mauritius parliamentary delegation

BY PROF. DR. WOLFGANG H. THOME, ETN AFRICA CORRESPONDENT | JUN 05, 2014

When Seychelles celebrated the 50th anniversary of Party LEPEP and its predecessor organizations earlier this week, during which Seychelles President James Alix Michel launched a book about former Head of State Albert Rene titled “Albert Rene – The Father of the Modern Seychelles,” the Minister of Tourism and Culture, Alain St.Ange, used the opportunity to interact with a group of parliamentarians from Mauritius. The MPs had traveled to Mahe to show solidarity with their sister island and demonstrate a spirit of cooperation, and the Minister gladly took the chance to brief the delegation on a range of issues of mutual interest.

High on the agenda was inter-island cooperation in tourism and other areas, and with both islands being founder members of the Vanilla Island Organization, it is expected that the topic of how the Seychelles and Mauritius can both benefit from this marketing platform was also discussed.

The Seychelles has been a strong supporter of the Vanilla Islands concept and has been instrumental in raising the profile of the new marketing cooperative.

Some months ago in fact, the matter was raised at a parliamentary session in Port Louis, Mauritius and the group of parliamentarians visiting the Seychelles were no doubt keenly interested to hear more about the Vanilla Islands Organization and the successes already accomplished as well as the plans for the future so when they went home they could share their new-found insights with their colleagues in the Mauritius parliament.

Seychelles Carnival keeps people on their feet

Jun 04, 2014

The SOCA News magazine in the UK has come out with a four-page feature on the Seychelles Carnival entitled “Sleepless in Seychelles,” describing how the event can keep a visitor on his/her feet as spending lazy days by the pool would probably not be a wise decision during carnival time.

Writer Stephen Spark, who is now a faithful media guest at the Carnaval International de Victoria, compliments Seychelles on improving on each edition of the carnival so far and says “…it is hard to believe that the 2014 edition was only the country’s fourth carnival …”

Spark speaks of the continued success of the carnival and says the friendliness of the Seychellois, the atmosphere, and small size of the place makes anything possible.

“Where else can you see representatives of Brazil, Trinidad, and London carnivals within a few meters of each other? Where else can you see Koreans partying with Germans or Chinese acrobats posing with Madagascan dancers?” he writes.

The feature speaks of the highlights of the three days of carnival celebrations and notes that for the first time, a children’s carnival and a Masquerade Carnival Ball were also organized.

In addition to the official schedule, it says, numerous smaller events took place around the capital of Victoria during the three days.

SEYCHELLES RANKS HIGH IN ROMANCE TRAVEL

UK rates Seychelles in Top 10 romance destinations

Jun 04, 2014

The UK travel trade has rated Seychelles among the Top 10 destinations in the world for the best wedding and honeymoon experience for 2014.

The results have been published in the Perfect Places magazine which comes out once a year to rate the UK travel agents’ best destinations in the world.

The issue went out last week with 10 different categories being awarded, such as Best for Spa, Best Value for Money, Best for Dining, Best for Nightlife, Best for Sports and Activities, Best for Luxury, and Best for Nature.

A selection of top-selling travel agents from different agencies were asked to name their favorite places, and a shortlist was then posted online with more than 300 agents completing the survey for the best destinations.

Seychelles takes its place of pride in the “Best Weddings and Honeymoons” category, among some of the most popular destinations in the world renowned for romance experiences.

Sixth-placed Seychelles has been described as one of the easiest places to organize a paradise island wedding.

“Many couples take their vows on the beach, and other options include a ceremony at the grounds of an old colonial house. The Seychelles is popular, because agents can offer different experiences, such as an island wedding combined with an exciting safari in Kenya or a honeymoon in Dubai,” says the review.

Speaking from London, the Seychelles Tourism Board’s Manager for PR and News Bureau, Lena Hoareau, said that the news comes at a very good time as Seychelles is running a six-week campaign with the travel publication that produces Perfect Places.

“The good news couldn’t have come at a better time, because the day Perfect Places hit the shelves, we started our own six-week campaign, and Seychelles will be visible to over 30,000 travel agents in UK,” she said.

Seychelles is on the home page of the travel publication’s website, and agents are being encouraged to learn more about this destination by participating in a competition which can win them a FAM trip to the islands later this year.

“Perfect Places is considered the ‘hot list’ where the UK trade’s favorite destinations are ranked, and we are very happy to be amongst the destinations that keep attracting attention in the travel industry. We expect that with the ongoing campaign, we are going to generate some excitement and definite results for this market,” said Mrs. Hoareau.

Seychelles’ ranking in Perfect Places comes eight months after the destination was voted among the Top 10 destinations for 2014 by the well-known Lonely Planet magazine in the UK.

The Seychelles’ Minister for Tourism and Culture, Alain St.Ange, said the visibility campaign for Seychelles was achieving its aims, because more people are able to increase their awareness on Seychelles and also visit the islands.

“We will continue to receive such good news because a lot of efforts are being put into marketing and making our destination more visible all over the world. The trade and consumers are recognizing that Seychelles is not only a destination being highly recommended on the market but it is worth visiting for one of the most unique holiday experiences. ‘Everything Excels in the Seychelles,’ is what was written by Ted Davis from Queensland, as he was proposing Seychelles adopts this slogan. This proposal speaks for itself,” the Minister said.

TOURISM PRODUCTS IN SEYCHELLES AND ZAMBIA COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER

Tourism Minister Kapata hails ties between Zambia, Seychelles

Jun 04, 2014

Zambia Tourism Minister Jean Kapata says the government has partnered with Seychelles in promoting the country's tourism sector.

And Seychelles Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Paul Adam says African countries must find resources to promote the continent as one destination and not as fragments of different countries.

During a meeting with Adam in Victoria on Friday, Kapata said Zambia had a lot to learn from Seychelles especially in the area of festival organization, prompting further measures to strengthen bi-lateral cooperation between the two countries.

"Tourism products in Seychelles and Zambia complement each other; Seychelles offers 'beach and sun' while Zambia provides 'wildlife and adventure encounters.' My ministry will consider the possibility of sending a team to Seychelles for a training program," said Kapata according to a press release issued by Zambia Tourism Board (ZTB) Public Relations and Media Manager Caristo Chitamfya.

And Adam said African countries must find resources to promote the continent as one destination and not as fragments of different countries.

"…Africa should learn from the Caribbean model by selling Africa as one destination that offers unique products and experiences in different countries. The pyramids in Egypt, beach and sunshine in Seychelles, and wildlife in Zambia are a marketing package that would attract a lot of foreign tourists such as the high-income Chinese travelers," he said.

Adam further expressed his government's desire to facilitate the introduction of “a flight a day” between Zambia and Seychelles but that this called for the review and modernization of the 1980 Bilateral Essence Agreement with the Zambia Civil Aviation Authority.

"Seychelles is already in contact with big airlines like Emirates that could be persuaded to extend their flights into Zambia once the aviation agreements are in place," said Adam.

Seychelles elects its Beauty Queen 2014

Jun 03, 2014

All eyes last weekend were on the new Savoy Seychelles Resort & Spa on Beau Vallon Beach for the crowning of “Miss Seychelles… Another World” 2014, as the outgoing beauty queen Agnes Gerry crowned Camilla Estico as “Miss Seychelles… Another World” 2014.

Since the beginning of the pageant, Camilla Estico was much more daring than the eleven running contestants. Surprisingly, it was this zealous spirit which stands in stark contrast to the other contestant personalities that made her the jury’s favorite. A beauty queen at 23, on the night of the pageant, the lucky star was shining in the direction of this young Seychelloise who has been living in the United States for nine years and studying performing Arts at Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre, one of United States’ top-ranking performing arts schools. Taking her first shot in the “Miss Seychelles… Another World” beauty pageant, Camilla woke up on Sunday, June 1, feeling she is definitely one of the most beautiful ladies in Seychelles islands. She did not only win the crown of “Miss Seychelles… Another World” 2014, but she took home the titles of Miss Talent and Miss Photogenic, leaving Lisa Rose with the title of first princess and Marvel Godley as second princess.

In her opening remarks Sherin Naiken, Chief Executive Officer of the Seychelles Tourism Board said the pageant has moved out of its early days as just a beauty contest.

“Today it is not just about beauty for beauty’s sake, but rather beauty with a purpose.”

Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, said these contestants made the wise decision to come forward and be part of this pageant.

“It is not by staying at home and looking at a mirror and saying 'Mirror, mirror, who is the prettiest of all' that you will become a winner. It is those girls that have taken their courage in both hands and are now contesting who are all winners. What we are doing is putting our culture in the forefront, the culture of a nation is in the heart and soul of its people. This is why ‘Miss Seychelles… Another World’ becomes our Ambassador for the Tourism Board. Our culture plays a part today and will continue to play a part tomorrow in the marketing of our destination,” said Minister St.Ange.

On the night of the pageant, the contestants’ fates were in the jury’s hands, which were the contestants’ magic mirrors.

From the seven finalists, the People’s Choice Award went to Ronda Sidonie, Raphaela Dugasse pulled the Miss Sports Award, Camilla Estico pulled Miss Talent & Miss Photogenic, and Elmina Savy pulled the Best Effort for Project. As the seven finalists courageously answered questions from the jury, it became more evident who will be the potential winners.

Camilla Estico, reigning “Miss Seychelles… Another World” 2014, picked out Christoph Ganster's question. Mr. Ganster, the General Manager of Raffles Praslin Resort Seychelles asked, “While making decisions in life, do you listen to your heart or mind? Who inspires you and why? Who would you like to be inspired, if you were crowned ‘Miss Seychelles… Another World’ 2014?”

To which Camilla answered: “I follow my heart. My parents inspire me, and I wish to inspire my younger sister, Beatrice, as she looks up to me in many ways, and I would like to be a good role model for her in future.” A million dollar answer that surely has contributed immensely to her clinching the title. The pageant night also saw the crowning of Stephanie Duval as Miss Personality and Raphaella Dugasse as Miss Sports. Michealla Rosette won Best Evening wear, Elmina Savy won for Best Effort for Project, and Ronda Sidonie took home the People’s Choice Award. By winning this title, Ronda automatically made it as one of the seven finalists.

For the other contestants, as the curtain closed on the pageant, this is where the journey ended for them. But for Camilla Estico, a new chapter is opening up for her, to prove to the members of the jury who have given her the title, that they have made the right and sound choice.

Oil and gas finds lifts western Indian Ocean prospects

Jun 02, 2014

The “Western Indian Ocean is increasingly becoming a hot spot as reflected by the numerous discoveries of oil and gas resources in the sub-region. From Mozambique to Somalia, energy resource discoveries are drawing global attention,” says Dr. Carlos Lopes, the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), in reference to the hydrocarbon bonanza which has gripped the region.

“Gas discoveries in Mozambique and Tanzania, oil deposits and new discoveries in South Sudan and Uganda, offering of deep ocean exploration rights in Madagascar, Tanzania, and recently in Seychelles - after a two-year moratorium - has opened the western Indian Ocean region to energy resource interests, including from China and India,” he said.

SEYCHELLES

In June last year, the Indian Ocean island nation of Seychelles, best known as a tourist haven, joined the hydrocarbon fever that had spread across the entire western Indian Ocean. This was when it invited oil and gas exploration companies to bid for exploration oil blocks after its two-year moratorium lapsed. This exploration freeze gave Seychelles time to review its energy sector’s legislation and consult with the industry and the Seychellois public in setting new rules for bidders. Seychelles was not new to oil surveys as it had conducted several assessments in the 90s.

“We decided to get a clear framework and adopted best practices and legislation from successful countries such as Norway,” says Jean Paul Adam, Seychelles Foreign Affairs Minister. “The moratorium was meant to give us a better understanding and help us lay a proper foundation for oil and gas exploration in our country. We had to get it right from the start.”

At the time of the Seychelles exploration embargo, WHL Energy, an Australian firm, and Afren Plc held offshore Seychelles petroleum exploration licenses. Early this year, Ophir Energy, a UK-based energy concern, farmed in to earn a 75 percent interest in WHL’s Seychelles stake.

Aware of the quest that has swept across the western Indian Ocean region in the last five years, Seychelles decided to start with the policy framework before allowing prospective oil companies access to oil and gas blocks. “We signed the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), because we felt that it was better that oil companies know what they will be required to do upfront which essentially means a responsive industry,” Adam said. “In some cases, it has been a disincentive. Some companies realized that it is easier to go to other places where there are less stringent rules.”

MOZAMBIQUE

Even though interests in oil and gas in the western Indian Ocean seaboard had been there since the 1960s, it did not warrant much attention until the Mozambican discovery was made in 2011. The renewed impetus for the search of hydrocarbons kicked off in 2006 when the Mozambican state oil company Empressa Nacional de Hidrocarbonatos de Mocambique (ENH) issued an exploration license to the Italian oil company Eni to explore for natural gas off its Indian Ocean coast. The license was for an area that was 2500 km off its coastal capital, Maputo, and 40 km north of Cabo del Gado.

And so began western Indian Ocean’s countries quest for oil and gas. In 2007, Statoil, the Norwegian state energy firm, joined the exploration race by setting its operational base in Mozambican northern neighbor Tanzania when it signed a Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) with the Tanzanian Petroleum Development Cooperation (TPDC). US oil giant Anadarko joined the fray in the Mozambican exploration race in 2010.

Then the discoveries began. In 2011, Eni discovered some 15 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of natural gas and Anadarko followed suit. To this day, Anadarko has sunk more than 25 deep-water wells in its area of operations striking more than 70 tcf.

TANZANIA

In the same year, Tanzania also discovered massive natural gas deposits in the Indian Ocean. These discoveries boosted Tanzania and Mozambique’s status and stirred interest for more exploration while at the same time generated an intense interest across the western Indian Ocean region. The contagion spread within the Indian Ocean belt nations of Mauritius, Madagascar, Kenya, Somalia, and Seychelles. In April 2012, the US Geological Survey (USGS), prompted by the discoveries made in the western and southern Indian Ocean shelf, decided to explore further. Under its World Petroleum Resources Project, USGS conducted a study within the region. The study had sought to assess the potential of undiscovered, technically-recoverable oil and natural gas resources of this part of the world, exclusive of the United States. Seychelles, Comoros, Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar, Mozambique, and South Africa were all covered in the assessment which narrowed on four geological provinces within the western and southern Indian Ocean region.

INDIAN OCEAN AS THE NEW OIL FRONTIER – INTEREST FROM ASIA INCREASES

The USGS study found out that the area contains 27.6 billion barrels of oil, 441.1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, and 13.77 billion barrels of natural gas liquids. Last year, the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) findings confirmed USGS conclusions that the Western Indian Ocean is emerging as the next oil frontier. A month before the USGS began their study, the Indian Ocean archipelago of Comoros had awarded its first ever exploration license to Bahari Resources, a Kenyan-based oil and gas exploration company.

Comoros, which is coming out of a chaotic past, took cue from its East and South African coastal neighbors in awarding the exploration license. The block accorded to Bahari Resources is adjacent to the Rovuma Delta where Anadarko and Eni had discovered gas. In December 2012, UK oil firm Tullow Oil and its partners Pan Continental Oil and Gas and Ophir Energy of UK announced that they had struck gas off the Kenyan coast.

“The Indian Ocean has always been strategic,” Seychelles leading environmental defender Nirmal Shah who heads the not-for profit environmental agency Nature Seychelles says.

This oil boom in the Western Indian Ocean has excited the world and stirred immense interest of exploration studies across the region.

On May 18, this year Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Cooperation (JOGMEC) and Seychelles national oil company PetroSeychelles announced that they had completed a joint 2D seismic data acquisition and had embarked on acquisition collection of geochemical-data. This was a significant step for the Japanese energy giant as in July 2013, JOGMEC had been granted an exploration license by the Jamaica-based International Seabed Authority (ISA) to prospect for deep sea minerals such as cobalt, platinum, nickel, molybdenum, and other rare earth metals in the vicinity of the Indian Ocean.

Promising prospects of abundant mineral resources in the western Indian Ocean is a magnet to several Asian economies. The ISA has also licensed China Ocean Mineral Resources’ Research and Development Association (COMRA) and the Indian government to prospect for mineral resources in the Indian Ocean deep sea.

The three Asian nations of Japan, China, and India have huge domestic demands for energy resources. The US Energy Information Agency (EIA) has put India as the fourth largest energy consumer after the US, China, and Russia. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) Energy Outlook report issued in mid-October 2013 notes that the Asia-Pacific nations will need $11.7 trillion worth of investments in the energy sector in the next 25 years to meet their energy demands. It is this huge energy demand that has fueled the current interest witnessed in the western Indian Ocean and is highly unlikely to end soon. The challenge currently facing the region is harnessing the exploitation of the hydrocarbon find into a blessing and avoiding the pitfalls of “resource curse.”

Seychelles develops fly-cruise tourism

Jun 02, 2014

The Chief Executive Officer, Lt. Col. Andre Ciseau, and the Director of Business Development, Mr. David Bianchi, of the Seychelles Ports Authority (SPA) participated in a one-day workshop organized by the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority on COSTA CROSIERES’ re-branding and its return to the Indian Ocean. Branded COSTA’s “Neo Collection” program, COSTA aims to offer a new cruising experience in the southwestern Indian Ocean region and during the port calls in the different Ile Vanille Islands.

The workshop was held in Port Louis, Mauritius, on May 22 and was attended by the Chief Executive Officers and Senior Directors from the ports of Seychelles, Madagascar, Mauritius, and Reunion. COSTA CROSIERES was represented by its Director for Itinerary Planning, Mr. Emilio Zunino. The workshop was officially launched by the Minister for Tourism and Leisure of Mauritius.

COSTA CROSIERES has been a faithful tourism partner in the region and in Seychelles, maintaining ocean cruising itineraries even at the time when several cruise liners opted to pull out of the region or scale down their operations because of the risks associated with maritime security issues in certain parts of the Indian Ocean. COSTA’s continued presence is testimony to its continued confidence in our region. The company has operated several cruise liners in the past including “COSTA ALLEGRA,” “COSTA MARINA,” “COSTA ROMANTICA,” and “COSTA RIVIERA.”

In its new itinerary which it plans to begin in January 2015, COSTA CROSIERES has proposed a new experience for its more than 1600 on-board guests including longer stays (up to 3 days) in Port Victoria which has been welcomed by the SPA. The 48-hour leg sailing from Port Louis (Mauritius) to Port Victoria (Seychelles) will constitute an exotic experience where more activities will be offered to the guests to experience life at sea following their stop-overs on land.

Seychelles Minister for Tourism & Culture Alain St.Ange

COSTA’s new strategy and longer stays in Port Victoria will open up additional business opportunities for local service providers including shipping agents, Destination Management Companies, ship chandlers, taxis, car hire operators, tour guides, craft vendors, boat charter operators, local shops, and bus operators. COSTA is planning up to 10 cruises during the 2015/16 season.

COSTA CROSIERES has expressed great satisfaction with its past experience in Port Victoria including the efficiency of SPA, the hospitality of Seychellois, the relative ease of accessibility of its guests to service providers, and the efficiency of local authorities such as passport control. SPA is, therefore, calling on all tourism stakeholders and service providers to continue to maintain the high standard and to go the extra mile in order to render the proposed prolonged stay of the guests more interesting, special, and unforgettable. New activities can be organized to cater for the extra days and nights of COSTA’s guests in Seychelles.

The Port Louis workshop concluded on a positive note to continue to find ways to smooth out procedures and enhance the overall efficiency of the different stakeholders and service providers as well as the handling of the cruise vessels and their guests as part of the “special experience” within the Ile Vanille Islands. In so doing, the southwestern Indian Ocean region aims to become a benchmark for cruising and to remain a magnet to attract more cruise liners. Discussions are ongoing between various stakeholders to attract a further two cruise companies to the region.

In meetings subsequent to the COSTA CROSIERES workshop, the Association of Ports of the Indian Ocean Islands (APIOI) endorsed COSTA’s re- branding program and its new strategy for the region. The APIOI, whose chairperson and vice chairperson are on a country rotation basis, elected Mr. Avellin Christian Eddy, CEO of the Port of Toamasina in Madagascar as the new Chairperson following a 3-year tenure of the position by the CEO of the Mauritius Port Authority, Mr. Shekur Suntah. Lt. Col. Ciseau was elected the Vice Chairperson and Treasurer.

The APIOI also discussed strategies for common capacity building through training opportunities especially for port management staff, port engineers, and harbor pilots, including funding possibilities.

In line with government and tourism strategies, the Seychelles Ports Authority continues to work with various partners and stakeholders locally and internationally to promote Port Victoria as the preferred port of call in the region for cruise ships and super yachts.

Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, has congratulated the Seychelles Port Authority for engaging with the Indian Ocean Islands community to further the cruise ship business of the region. "It is together that we make economic sense for more cruise ships to be based in our region and to really develop the fly-cruise possibilities," said Minister St.Ange of the Seychelles.

Seychelles FetAfrik Gala Dinner showcased multiethnic diversity of the islands

June 02, 2014

The annual Seychelles FetAfrik Gala Dinner just keeps getting bigger and better. At the Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Resort and Casino on Saturday, May 24, a touch of glamour was added to the flagship event of FetAfrik in the Seychelles. This event is the Seychelles celebrations of Africa Day, the event that is celebrated as part of the five historical festivals marking the five lines making the proud Seychellois Creole people of today. The soaring success of the event was evident as tickets for the Gala Dinner were sold out way ahead of the event.

The highly-anticipated show of top Niger Fashion Designer, Aphadi, at the FetAfrik Gala was described as a “catwalk soaring to new heights!” The 24 ready-to-wear haute couture collection was worn by models from the island's reputed Coral Model Agency. It showcased vibrant colors blended into modern and noble materials, such as “pagne,” embroidery and handmade beadings, which Alphadi said “draw inspiration from the Seychelles’ vibrant colors.” The collection was one dedicated to women and peace in the world. Alphadi stole the guests’ hearts with his white collection, before humbly gracing the catwalk with “Miss Seychelles another World 2013,” Agnes Gerry, under grand applause from the public.

The Seychelles FetAfrik Gala Dinner was also about meeting a celebrity chef. This year Chef Musama Kaloto Chamunda from Zambia was in the spotlight and coveted by media covering the event. Her signature dishes such as Chicken Casserole simmered in spicy tomato sauce (Zambian Style) with piri, mbuzi salad, and Katapa (cassava leaves) were incredibly tasty.

Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, said the culture of a nation lies in the heart and soul of its people and that this was why it was the people of Seychelles who were now at the center in the continued development of the tourism industry of Seychelles.

“Today it feels so good to see all of you at our FetAfrik Gala Dinner. The Ministry of Tourism and Culture is so proud to celebrate FetAfrik. I need today to repeat the noble words of Mahatma Gandhi who said that the culture of a nation lies in the heart and soul of its people. We should take pride in what we do and ensure what we are doing is for the long-term benefit of our country,” said Minister St.Ange at the Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Hotel & Casino.

FetAfrik Gala ended with an African Disco, as guests danced the night away with great African songs.

TOURISM FOODIE EVENT

Seychelles annual culinary competition wins the heart of promising chefs

Jun 01, 2014

In keeping with the saying “the quickest way to someone’s heart is through their stomach,” the Seychelles annual Culinary Competition is undoubtedly more than an affair of the heart and stomach, but it has proven to be a fine time for young talented chefs with heart and passion to come forward and be discovered.

Now in its fifth edition, ISPC Seychelles, the contest’s biggest sponsor, has confirmed that they will stay on board, and they have also blown the whistle for the launching of the sixth edition of this national competition. Alfred Furcroy, Chief Executive Officer of ISPC Seychelles, said this year’s contestants will battle for a comfortable position in the preliminary and finals at the Seychelles New Tourism Academy building. Mr. Furcroy was speaking at a presentation of a check worth R150,000 collected at the competition's Gala Dinner organized in March at the Kempinski Resort.

The Gala Dinner is organized annually as part of the National Culinary Competition, and it allows the grand winners of the competition to present their signature dishes for all to see. For the past years, the money collected with the selling of tickets for the night has been donated to the Seychelles Tourism Academy. In the previous edition, R115,266 was collected and donated to Seychelles Tourism Academy to finance its documentation center. This donation of R150,000 will still go to Seychelles Tourism Academy to pay a consultant to review its strategic plan 2010-2015 and to draft a new document for 2014-2015.

Flavien Joubert, Principal of Seychelles Tourism Academy, said the money will also be used for the institution’s charitable donations. Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, saw through this donation a perfect example where private-public partnerships are at work.

“The National Culinary Competition is designed for the young people of Seychelles to show their talents and in so doing to be discovered. Most importantly, it opens the doors for young Seychellois to make a career in this industry. The Ministry of Tourism and Culture appreciates this public-private sector partnership created through this event, and we strongly believe that it is the key to our continued success,” Minister St.Ange said.

The 6th Edition of Seychelles Culinary Competition will be held in October 2014.

Seychelles Tourism Minister closes in on hotel visits on Praslin

Jun 30, 2014

Alain St.Ange, Sherin Naiken & Nathalie Didon working to complete hotel door-to-door visits

Seychelles vision, that its people should claim back its tourism industry, is well set in the business attitudes of its nation. More than ever, Seychellois are taking ownership of their country’s tourism industry and are giving an increased commercial value to the island's hospitality industry.

Praslin, the second biggest island of the Seychelles with a range of 117 small and large hotels, is a perfect example where 90% of the properties are owned by Seychellois, who not only know their island inside out, but are today providing personalize service with a special touch of the Seychellois warmth. In his continued drive to visit all 117 small and large hotels on Praslin, Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture; Anne Lafortune, Principal Secretary for Tourism; Sherin Naiken, the Chief Executive Officer of the Seychelles Tourism Board; and Nathalie Didon, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Seychelles Tourism Board headed to Praslin on Thursday June 12 for a third visit on the island to visit another 20 hotels.

With 72 hotels visited so far and 45 remaining, this has kept Minister St.Ange and his delegation much closer to the undertaking of completing its door-to-door visits on Praslin by the month of July. Getting closer to Baie Ste. Anne, Praslin’s downtown, it was evident that guest houses and self-catering properties are owned in this area of Praslin by islanders who believe that they are today the machine of the island’s economy.

The great bonus for holidaymakers booking a room in these properties is its proximity to the island’s jetty. Within walking distance from the jetty and close to commercial areas, these guesthouses and small hotels are ideal for international and domestic travelers visiting Praslin. Guesthouses and hotels located in Praslin’s center not only develop the sense of business hospitality but venture into craft and textile as well.

The hospitality and tourism industry on Praslin has come to the realization that business can only grow on the Island if holidaymakers have places to go to cash in on locally-made products. Having a small souvenir shop with products made in Seychelles, or venturing into an open-air museum contributes to adding value to their properties.

Guest houses and small hotels in the Baie Ste. Anne downtown area provide a conducive level of comfort, design, and personality at all-inclusive prices. They are the gateway to the island of La Digue they all say. With the Southeast Monsoon and strong winds at this time of the year, beach goers are inconvenienced by some seaweed. Owners of tourism establishments explained to Minister St.Ange and his delegation that they have to be innovative in their approach, so that beaches remain clean at all times. In general on Praslin, the small establishments are receiving positive guest feedback.

Jenny’s Self Catering at Grand Anse, Villa Calice at La Pointe, Coco de Mer - Black Parrot Hotel at Anse Bois de Rose, Le Grand Bleu, Pointe Cabris, Chalet Cote Mer and Colibri at Baie Ste. Anne, Cavern Self Catering Apartments at Baie Ste. Anne, Le Port Guest House at Baie Ste. Anne, Maison Belle at Baie Ste. Anne, and Chez Roro at Baie Ste. Anne all have a feeling of belonging to the Praslin tourism industry and have expressed their desire to grow their businesses.

On the second day of the visit, Friday, June 13, which started with an early morning tour of properties located at Anse Gouvernement, it was interesting to observe that hotels in this region of Praslin, as they are steadily growing their businesses and continue to strive in their efforts to win a bigger share of the island's tourism market. Innovative ideas are surfacing in these establishments to retain their positions up front in the market especially in the Cote d’Or region, the prime beach destination of Praslin, with a high number of small properties and restaurants. As some restaurants saw a chance to diversify into new activities such as guesthouses, there’s growing concern of emerging “illegal restaurants” on the beach. Such activity is seen as detrimental to legal restaurants positioning in this area. Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, condemned this practice saying it should be curbed because it tarnishes the Seychelles image. Talking with owners and managers of L’Archipel, Villa Milles Etoiles, Sky Blue Guest House, Omusee Self Catering, Les Villas D’Or, Cote d’Or Lodge, Cote d’Or Footprints, Coconut Residence, Cote d’or Self Catering Apartment, Pirogue Lodge and Iles des Palmes, and National Heritage Treasure Trail, the same message was echoed that Seychelles should claim back its tourism industry.

Minister St.Ange at the United Nations Headquarters in New York

It has been said that when a speaker or presenter puts his notes aside, you can be assured that what he is about to say is coming from his spirit and what you are about to hear is the real deal. This was the case when Seychelles Minister Alain St.Ange chose not to use his prepared notes to address the United Nations (UN) conference on Sustainable Tourism in Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Those attending the conference got the chance to witness the tourism passion of Minister St.Ange as he was moved to put aside his notes and speak from his spirit. What St.Ange was about to say was unrehearsed, serious and candid on a subject that he holds very dear to his heart.

St.Ange recently went to New York to deliver a keynote address at the UN meeting that was co-organized by the International Organization of the Francophonie (OIF). He went leading a delegation made up of Ambassador Marie-Louise Potter, the Seychelles Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Ambassador Ronny Jumeau, the Seychelles Ambassador for Climate Change and Small Island Developing States. The UN conference was the opportunity for the Republic of the Seychelles to highlight its achievements in the Sustainable Tourism framework.

The Seychelles Minister surprised everyone by saying that the topic being discussed demanded that he spoke from the heart instead of using his prepared official text. "Sustainable Tourism is not just a terminology, it is instead a concept that needed the political will and tenacity. To deliver for our respective population we need to believe in this concept of sustainable tourism and then move to implement it. To be seen and remembered as having been good custodians of what we have been blessed with, we need to act today and follow the sustainable tourism route," said Minister St.Ange.

By then it was obvious that the minister’s message was heartfelt and he was talking about something that he sincerely believed in. Minister St.Ange went on to say that he wanted Seychelles to be seen and remembered as good custodians of what the islands had been blessed with. He reminded the ambassadors, country representatives and others present that Seychelles had today over 50% of their total land area declared protected zones as Nature Reserves.

A tourism minister known for putting the people first and foremost, St.Ange emphasized that involving people in tourism for Seychelles has been the pillar of their economy because without that approach Seychelles could never have sustainable tourism that could be consolidated for the long term. He also said that his administration had given their culture its rightful place in the tourism development of their country, and that when Seychelles was speaking of culture, Seychelles was speaking of its people which we are putting at the center of their development.

"No Country has the right to be ashamed of their culture and of their people. It is the duty of the Tourism Authorities to showcase one's culture and in so doing one's people as real assets of their country," Minister St.Ange said.

He went on to explain that Seychelles has also embarked on the training of their people to ensure that they could join their tourism industry workforce and how they are presently building a brand new tourism academy. Under Minister’s St.Ange leadership in tourism, Seychelles has continued with the program of Wildlife Clubs in their schools to ensure that their younger generations were developing the interest for appreciating what the islands of the Seychelles had in order to protect these natural attractions and assets.

St.Ange also let it be known that the Seychelles was always extending its hand in the developing of partnership in the region through the Vanilla islands, and in Africa through the new African Union tourism initiative. He said that Seychelles is reaching out to the world through working as a committed partner at the UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organization).

Both Ambassador Potter and Minister St.Ange explained how climate change impacts more broadly the sustainable development of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and that this was why that subject matter was seen as being major challenges for the Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) . They reminded everyone present about the importance of believing in the concept of Sustainable Tourism Development. Ambassador Potter and Minister St.Ange are satisfied with how the meeting at the UN turned out, and they were pleased with that member states of the UN were as interested as evident by the lively debates and Q & A sessions during the meeting.

Minister St.Ange also discussed with Ambassador Potter and Consul General Justin Etzin different matters relating to a greater presence by the Seychelles Islands in the USA and the potential of increased promotion of the Seychelles as a holiday destination for the Americans. They analyzed holiday packages for the USA as a target market that would take in an African safari before the relaxing break in the pristine environment of the Seychelles.

Following his UN address and talks with the Ambassador Potter and Consul General, Minister St.Ange met with the CEO of the Africa Travel Association (ATA) Eddie Bergman during his visit to New York. Also present at the meeting between the Africa Travel Association (ATA) and the Seychelles Minister was Andrea Papitto, responsible for Trade Relations and Communications at for ATA.

Bergman briefed Minister St.Ange about the benefits of tourism destinations becoming members of the Africa Travel Association (ATA). Bergman spoke about the next General Assembly of the association that is set for later this year in Uganda and he invited the Seychelles Minister to consider attending the General Assembly and to get involved with the Africa Travel Association. Bergman and Minister St.Ange discussed tourism promotion for Seychelles and a possible cooperation with the ATA.

Minister St.Ange is a founding member of the International Coalition of Tourism Partners (ICTP), an organization dedicated to green growth and sustainable tourism. Seychelles tourism – a success story

Jun 29, 2014

Seychelles Minister of Tourism and Culture Alain St.Ange

The Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, Alain St.Ange, has again been described as the man who has turned around tourism on the islands and that also, thanks to his campaign to increase visibility of the destination in the world press, the latter is today enjoying a success story.

Ile en Ile Mag magazine of Mauritius has recently carried out an exclusive interview with the minister, entitled “Seychelles Tourism – A Success Story,” with an introduction which tells of the Seychelles’ tourism remarkable progress in the last few years.

“When one says Seychelles, one can immediately start dreaming. You think of the beaches, the sun and the holidays…” says the article, adding that the visitor figures to the islands have increased steadily over the last few years even when the rest of the world was in economic turmoil.

Minister St.Ange starts the interview by describing the tourism climate in Seychelles, citing that it is living a true success and achieving its objectives at all levels. He says at the time of the interview (in May) that all the hotels were enjoying a good occupancy level, and that Seychelles has managed to maintain its reputation as a “quality” getaway and not as a mass tourism destination.

A total 230,272 tourists traveled to Seychelles in 2013, representing a 10.7% increase on the previous year.

“I am very happy, and I congratulate the Seychelles Tourism Board for its continued efforts to market and sell the destination all over the world. But they are not alone; we also have the government and private sector, all coming together to find the right strategies for this very important industry,” Minister St.Ange says.

He is then asked about the new regulations being implemented to encourage more “home grown” establishments. He says that two-and-a-half years ago, Seychelles’ President James Michel laid out a new road map for tourism, and his wish was to see more Seychellois take ownership of the tourism industry. Minister St.Ange stresses that it was never the government’s intention to have an economy of only big businesses.

“It is important for everyone to feel part of this development and this important industry. That’s why we have ensured that proper regulations and facilities are in place to encourage the opening of smaller establishments such as guest-houses, self-caterings, and smaller hotels,” he said.

He adds that over 200 small establishments have been registered recently, and this is the result of “the Seychellois people wanting to claim back their industry.”

When asked about the future of Seychelles tourism in the next few years, Minister St.Ange says that the country has a Tourism Master Plan which is now in its second year. The aim, he explains, was to assess where the country is going with its tourism industry and how it wants it to contribute to the economy.

“The President gave me a mission, to go out there and speak to the tourism trade and all other services that gain their businesses and livelihood through tourism (hotels, restaurants, car rentals, airlines, etc. and also farmers, fishermen, artists) to discuss their aspirations and what they want to see and achieve,” he explains.

“It is a mutual agreement amongst all groups that we don’t want mass tourism and no charters, because our people will not benefit from it. We all want to keep the beautiful image of our destination and everything else that conjures the image of ‘Seychelles’ in someone’s mind,” he adds.

Minister St.Ange says that tourism will remain the pillar of the Seychelles economy and that the country needs to continuously prepare human resources to sustain the growth. A new hotel school will open at the end of the year.

“It is important for the colors of Seychelles to be visible in all our hotels,” says the minister.

He also stresses that the country needs to have new hotel developments to keep up with the growth of the industry. Tourism on the islands helps to finance other sectors such as social services, health, and education, and thus attention must be given to that industry so that the whole nation can benefit.

“But this development to bring tourism to new heights must take place in phases, we need to grow the industry, but we must do it well. This year we will see the opening of two hotels and next year another two.

“But we have to be careful. We don’t want to open new hotels without the guarantee that we have airline seats availability to Seychelles. This is very important, and as Minister for Tourism, I am well aware of that. We need to have other facilities in place as well to sustain the growth such as adequate electricity and water. We need to plan ahead and calculate well. The bottom line is that we need the country and the people to benefit,” says Minister St.Ange.

The Minister also says that he has the Seychellois culture at heart, and he wants both culture and tourism to complement each other. By putting the local culture at the forefront, he stresses, the country is also putting its people at the forefront.

“Culture is at the center of our development and our communication. This is why we have the carnival, the Creole festival, and other such cultural events. Our culture is at the center of our tourism promotion, and this is what our visitors look for. We are proud of what we are and what we have,” he concludes.

Seychelles Airlines formally applies for licenses

According to information received from a reliable aviation source on Mahe, new wings will spread from the archipelago once a new applicant for an air service license, Seychelles Airlines, has received the relevant permits and clearances.

It is understood that the process was formally started by Intershore Aviation Limited, the limited liability company under which the brand Seychelles Airlines will operate, which a week ago lodged the relevant documents with the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA).

All eyes are now on the SCAA and the Ministry of Home Affairs and Transport to see how expeditiously the application for an air services license is processed before the company can then bring in their first aircraft, supposed to be a B767-300ER in a two-class configuration of business and economy class, and start the audit process before obtaining an air operator certificate.

While it could not be established if added processes are required vis-a-vis traffic rights out of the Seychelles and from the proposed destinations the new airline intends to fly to, it is likely that the new kid on the block, once fully licensed and cleared for flight status, will also require SCAA designation for certain routes, especially if the flights are to be operated as scheduled services and not as charter flights.

The venture was already discussed with key members of the private sector, who, while supportive of their national airline, were keen to see a new venture take off to add much-needed extra seats on nonstop flights from key European source markets like France and Italy without having to travel through a waypoint as is currently the case, which costs added time to reach the archipelago and increases the risk of delays.

It is understood that the support from a wide range of businesses among the Seychelles-based tourism sector was a key to driving the project ahead, with one regular source commenting: “The time is now right for a second airline to fly from and to Seychelles. There are gaps in our connectivity which the national airline apparently cannot fill due to their ties with Etihad. That link requires all northbound and eastbound flights to fly via Abu Dhabi. This may be instrumental for the financial recovery of Air Seychelles, but it does not match the expectations of tourism operators in Europe or here. Many of our important partners have time and again said they would prefer a nonstop flight to Mahe; we also have said that, but the logistics at the national airline dictate otherwise. So it is time to look at new options, and Seychelles Airlines has told us they intend to fly nonstop to Paris and at least two other European destinations. This will be a boost for our hotels, because more clients means higher occupancies. If they can get their fare structure sorted out, it should open new markets for Seychelles and not just cut into the market share of the airlines already coming here. The big question is, and I think we discussed this in April, how expeditious the license application will be processed and that no conflict of interest comes into play to the disadvantage of the new airline and in favor of the national airline. We will be watching this closely.”

Chief Executive of the new airline is one Mr. Ahmed Afif and efforts are underway to have him comment directly to eTN on plans for the new airline, once it has become operational.

Seychelles’ beauty queen joins fight against drug abuse

"By standing together as a nation with determination, we can curb the rise of substance abuse in Seychelles." The Seychelles newly-crowned beauty queen said this at a ceremony held last Thursday to mark the end of a four-day resilience relay organized as part of activities to commemorate the International Day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking (June 26).

Miss Camila Estico, “Miss Seychelles… another world” 2014 called on the young people of Seychelles to find their purpose in life, believe in a dream, and follow it until the end, no matter what their dream is.

“Dedicate yourself to a healthy lifestyle rooted in deep spiritual meaning with strong moral values that you have inherited from your parents, guardians, and the society as a whole. Then and only then, is when drugs will never be an option in your life,” said “Miss Seychelles… another world” 2014.

“Drug usage and abuse is not a solution to one’s problem. On the contrary, drugs only aggravate one’s life situation and eventually lead to total destruction. Substance abuse stands in the way of someone to achieving his or her purpose in life. Do not let yourself be a victim,” the Seychelles Beauty Queen went on to say.

Miss Camila Estico urged those that life may not be easy for them and who think that drug usage is the way out, to strive to be on the positive side of life by keeping away from the influence of substance abuse. “If you are fortunate to be alive, God has a purpose for you. Believe and have the faith that no mountain shall be too high to climb in rising above one’s difficulties to the promise of a better future,” she said.

“It is a reality that we all face difficulties in life, and sometimes it may prompt us to give up. But turning to drugs is not the solution. Believe in yourself that you will rise above your difficulties if you face life with a positive attitude,” “Miss Seychelles… another world” 2014 went on to say.

The four-day activity held under the theme "Pa les drog pran control" was organized by Campaign for Awareness, Resilience and Education against substance abuse (CARE) since June 23 where the relay started on La Digue. The relay baton went to Praslin before going to schools around Mahe and lastly ending at the Mont Fleuri secondary school on Thursday, where students read messages pertaining to resiliency against drugs and the theme for the activity.

Present at the ceremony were Designated Minister Vincent Meriton who is also the chairperson of Drug and Alcohol Council and of the National Social Renaissance Committee, Health Minister Mitcy Larue, leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly David Pierre, Ambassador for Women and Children’s Affairs Dr. Erna Athanasius, and CARE’s Chairperson Sarah Rene, among other high government officials, partners, teachers, and students.

Addressing those present, Minister Meriton called on students to lend a hand in helping to keep drugs away from the communities.

He congratulated the young people who are devoted to the cause of fighting against drug abuse. Mrs. Rene also saluted the young people who were present for their engagement in joining this fight against drug abuse and trafficking.

Seychelles UN Mission satisfied with SIDS Meeting called with Organisation De La Francophonie

Jun 27, 2014

Ambassador Marie-Louise Potter, the Seychelles Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Ambassador accredited to the USA, has said that she was satisfied with last Monday's meeting she co-organized with the International Organization of La Francophonie (IOF) on the question of sustainable tourism development in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) which was moderated by Ambassador Ronny Jumeau, the Seychelles Ambassador for Climate Change and Small Island Developing States.

Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, who had travelled especially to New York for this meeting also said as he left the USA, he was thrilled that the question of sustainable tourism development in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) had been well debated and that he was sure that member states of the UN were as interested as Seychelles was because of the lively Q & A open session that followed the presentations at the meeting. The Seychelles Minister had been at the United Nations (UN) this week to deliver a keynote address at this meeting co-organized by the International Organization of the Francophonie (OIF) and the Seychelles on the question of sustainable tourism development in Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Minister St.Ange was leading a delegation made up by Ambassador Marie-Louise Potter, the Seychelles Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and Ambassador Ronny Jumeau, the Seychelles Ambassador for Climate Change and Small Island Developing States.

Ambassador Potter worked closely with the International Organization of the Francophonie (OIF) to stage the meeting which has resulted in an appeal now made to rally all the SIDS Group around a table for a follow-up meeting prior to the Samoa Meeting. It was at this UN Meeting that the Seychelles Minister surprised everyone by saying that the topic being discussed 'Sustainable tourism is not just a terminology, it is instead a concept that needed the political will and tenacity' as he demanded that he speak from the heart instead of using his prepared official text. The Minister spoke after Ambassador Potter had made her opening remarks which reminded everyone present of the importance of believing in the concept of Sustainable Tourism Development. Both Ambassador Potter and Minister St.Ange who took the floor after her said that climate change impacts more broadly the sustainable development of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and that this was why that subject matter was seen as being major challenges for the Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) as was being discussed at that meeting at the United Nations on Monday the June 23 in which a committed delegation from the Seychelles was present. Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, said that he needed to thank the Organization International de La Francophonie (IOF) for co-organizing this meeting with and alongside the Seychelles.

"We note that in the framework of the Samoa Conference preparations, which is to be held from the 1st to the 4th of 2014, the International Organization of La Francophonie (IOF) is working to develop an initiative on sustainable tourism within the SIDS members. We are all very appreciative of this," the Seychelles Minister said.

This UN (United Nations) meeting in New York was the opportunity for the Republic of the Seychelles to highlight its achievements in the sustainable tourism framework. Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, said as he delivered his keynote address to the conference that Seychelles wanted to be seen and remembered as good custodians of what the islands had been blessed with. Seychelles’ Tourism Minister Alain St.Ange looks at the future of tourism

BY PROF. DR. WOLFGANG H. THOME, ETN AFRICA CORRESPONDENT | JUN 26, 2014

Seychelles Minister of Tourism Alain St.Ange

There are few tourism ministers in Africa I know who have mastered their portfolio like Alain St.Ange has. Kenya’s Najib Balala was often cited as an example of a politician who knew what he was talking about and what he was doing until he fell foul of his dictatorial party leader for reminding him of democratic principles – and coming from the Kenya coast clearly had a positive impact here – but then again, Alain St.Ange is in a class of his own.

Born into a family which had both politics as well as tourism at its center, this clearly rubbed off on him.
A former member of parliament himself, he then worked in the private sector before the Seychelles Hospitality and Tourism Association put him forward for appointment as Director of Tourism Marketing when the Seychelles Tourism Board underwent the much-needed restructuring in 2008/9, before then being appointed CEO of the organization and setting the course for one of the world’s most amazing marketing juggernauts, putting the archipelago on the world map.

His appointment as Minister for Tourism and Culture, having previously been an opposition member of parliament, is now seen as a masterstroke by President James Alix Michel, whose policy of opening political spaces, of broad-based inclusion, and of making the best use of Seychellois talent has helped to make tourism THE cornerstone of the country’s economy. More Seychellois than ever before now own or co-own tourism-related businesses, and more young Seychellois than ever before are receiving quality training at the Seychelles Tourism Academy, which also falls under the tourism portfolio.

Kitty Pope used her presence at the 4th edition of the Seychelles Carnival to talk to Alain St.Ange and here is some more of her interview and the answers:

USA & Seychelles - Kitty Pope of the African Diaspora Tourism in the USA caught up with Alain St.Ange,
the Seychelles Minister of Tourism, to complete her story on the Tourism Minister who can change the world.

Alain St.Ange, “Seychelles’ Iconic Native Son,” has grown up in Seychelles; St.Ange’s island home is very much a part of who he is, and he takes it with him everywhere he goes as he travels the world. He never neglects a chance to promote its beauty and other qualities to whomever he meets. Here he talks with Kitty J. Pope about Seychelles and his future plans to establish a boutique hotel on the island of La Digue after he retires from the Seychelles Ministry. The full report by Kitty Pope of the African Diaspora Tourism of the USA on the Seychelles Minister is published on the following website:www.alainstange.com

Why do you want your future hotel property to be located in La Digue?

St.Ange: I am a Diguois born and bred. La Digue Island has been my home, and it remains the island where my parents and grandparents are all enjoying their eternal peace. La Digue is also a key tourism island of the Seychelles, and that said, what a better place to then have a boutique hotel?

Has owning a boutique hotel always been one of your dreams from childhood or did you decide that this is what you wanted to do after you got involved in tourism as an adult?

St.Ange: I have always wanted to have my own small hotel, an establishment where my flair can be showcased. As a family, we have always been involved in the tourism industry. My father was a pioneer in the hospitality industry opening his “Cabanes Des Anges” Hotel right on the main beach of La Digue in 1972. This was but a year after Seychelles opened its International Airport. The time is now for me to set my own place and put my personal flair into the property.

I know that your father had an impact on your career as a tourism official. What are some of the things that you learned from your father that also could help you with hotel ownership?

St.Ange: My father did not study tourism, nor did he study hotel management, but he was a gifted tourism personality because the art of being a tourism personality was born in him. He was human and could relate to that industry that remains first and foremost a people’s industry. His joie de vive and jovial nature made him the perfect host. I saw my father working to establish his hotel when this industry was but in its infancy. I appreciated what he was doing and the passion with which he was managing his establishment. This is when I decided to move and follow my formal hotel training that was to be followed by a sales and marketing specialization course.

What do you want your legacy to be in the field of tourism and in Seychelles?

St.Ange: My only legacy can be what I have achieved for Seychelles. Today we are seen, and we are being counted as a tourism destination. The world of tourism speaks about Seychelles, because we are today relevant as a tourism destination. We have always had what is considered to be the ideal destination for holiday makers looking for the best of the best. But we kept this to ourselves as the country’s tag line of the past, “The Best Kept Secret.” Today, we are bolder in saying that we are a tourism destination, and we have put into place the mechanism to disseminate the necessary positive information to the world at large. We now need to continue this line of work as we consolidate for the long term, our industry that remains the pillar of our economy. This will be my legacy for our tourism industry and for Seychelles.

If you could envision Seychelles 50 years from now, what would you like to see?

St.Ange: I would like to see Seychelles as that tourism destination that has cared about itself. We are being seen today as being good custodians of what we have been blessed with as far as natural beauty, and I would love to see that undertaking continue. I would also like to see the bold statement we make as a country to get our people to work with us to claim back our tourism industry and to see more Seychellois involved in the industry that is the bread basket of their islands. Every Ministry of the Government must embrace this philosophy, as this is what will keep our tourism industry strong for the long term.

Seychelles tourism officials meet in USA for UN meeting

Jun 26, 2014

L-R: Minister Alain St.Ange, Ambassador Marie-Louise Potter, and Consul General Justin Entzin

Ambassador Marie-Louise Potter, the Seychelles representative at the United Nations and also the Ambassador in the USA, met with Alain St.Ange, their island's Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, who had traveled to the USA this week to address a meeting at the United Nations (UN).

Ambassador Potter and Consul General Entzin discussed with Minister St.Ange different matters relating to a greater presence by the Seychelles Islands in the USA. The potential of increased promotion of the Seychelles as a holiday destination for the Americans was discussed and also the potential of the USA as a target market analyzed for holiday packages that would take in an African safari before the relaxing break in the pristine environment of the Seychelles. "Everyone knows that the mid-ocean islands of the Seychelles offers the best in a sun, sea, and sand holiday, but for this, the USA was too far to be a target market. But for a safari and beach combination, Seychelles partners perfectly with mainland Africa, which was why our Tourism Board launched the twin-center holiday approach. "This is why we launched the concept of AFTER THE BIG FIVE… COME TO THE BEST FIVE. This was the spirit of working together as a region to grow the tourism cake - the same approach of beach and mountain holiday combinations we are doing with the island of La Reunion named the Switzerland of the Indian Ocean because of its spectacular mountains. La Reunion is also blessed with an active volcano and makes an ideal partner for Seychelles," Minister Alain St.Ange said.

Following these talks with the Seychelles Ambassador and Consul General, Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, held a meeting with the CEO of the Africa Travel Association based in New York itself to discuss tourism promotion for Seychelles and to see about possible cooperation.

Seychelles is renowned for its beaches that are described to be of exceptional beauty. The islands have a weather pattern that has given them the name of the islands with perpetual summer. The beaches of Seychelles are white and clean and lapped by the warm turquoise blue sea of the tropics.

Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, has welcomed the latest recognition of the island’s beaches. "We are known to be a country promoting eco-tourism since the launch of our tourism industry. We intensified our conservation approach declaring over 50% of our total land area as protected national parks and embarking on the sustainable tourism approach. Today the world at large is recognizing the tenacity with which the people of Seychelles have embraced the concept of being seen to be good custodians of the natural beauty of our mid-ocean islands,” said Minister St.Ange.

SUSTAINABLE TOURISM DEVELOPMENT IN SMALL ISLAND DEVELOPING STATES

United Nations hears appeal by Seychelles

Jun 25, 2014

Minister Alain St.Ange of the Seychelles outside the United Nations (UN) building in New York

Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, was at the United Nations (UN) this week to deliver a keynote address at the meeting co-organize by the International Organization of the Francophonie (OIF) and the Seychelles on the question of sustainable tourism development in Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Minister St.Ange was leading a delegation made up by Ambassador Marie-Louise Potter, the Seychelles Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and Ambassador Ronny Jumeau, the Seychelles Ambassador for Climate Change and Small Island Developing States.

The Seychelles Minister surprised everyone by saying that the topic being discussed demanded that he speak from the heart instead of using his prepared official text. "Sustainable tourism is not just a terminology, it is instead a concept that needed the political will and tenacity. To deliver for our respective population we need to believe in this concept of sustainable tourism and then move to implement it. To be seen and remembered as having been good custodians of what we have been blessed with, we need to act today and follow the sustainable tourism route," said Minister Alain St.Ange.

The Minister followed down the line made by Ambassador Potter in her opening remarks. They both said that climate change impacts more broadly the sustainable development of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and that this was why that subject matter was seen as being major challenges for the Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) as was being discussed at a meeting at the United Nations on Monday the June 23 in which a committed delegation from the Seychelles was present.

He reminded the ambassadors and country representatives present that everyone in Seychelles had today over 50% of their total land area declared protected zones as nature reserves, and he went on to say that Seychelles had appointed an ambassador to only work with other interested parties on the climate-change issue, he said that Seychelles had put into place the necessary approach to claim back its tourism industry in order to get there people more involved in their very own tourism that remains for Seychelles the pillar of their economy, because he said that without that approach of involving their people, Seychelles could never have a sustainable tourism that could be consolidated for the long term.

The Seychelles Minister also said that they had given their culture its rightful place in the tourism development of their country, and he went on to say that when Seychelles was speaking of culture, Seychelles was speaking of its people which they are putting at the center of their development. "No country has the right to be ashamed of their culture and of their people. It is the duty of the tourism authorities to showcase one's culture and in so doing one's people as real assets of their country," Minister St.Ange said.

The gathered ambassadors and country representatives present were also informed that Seychelles was continuing with the program of Wildlife Clubs in their schools to ensure that their younger generations were developing the interest for appreciating what the islands of the Seychelles had in order to protect these natural attractions and assets. The Minister said that Seychelles had also embarked on the training of their people to ensure that they could join their tourism industry workforce and that they were presently building a brand new tourism academy.

It was also emphasized at that meeting that the Seychelles were always extending their hand in the developing of partnerships in the region through the Vanilla Islands, and in Africa through the new African Union tourism initiative, and accessing the world through working as a committed partner at the UNWTO (UN World Tourism Organization). The Seychelles Minister ended his address by saying that Seychelles had launched their very own sustainable tourism brand, because they wanted to get their hotels who walk with them down the road of sustainable tourism to be seen and noticed.

Ambassador Marie-Louise Potter who had spoken before her Minister took the floor opened the Sustainable Tourism Meeting at the UN saying that she remained committed to working with other like-minded representatives, and Ambassador Ronny Jumeau was the one mandated to moderate the lively meeting that was full of comments and questions from the floor.

Minister St.Ange appealed to L'Organization de La Francophonie to get the SIDS group around a table for a meeting before the Samoa meeting and to help countries protect their cultural heritage by working with UNESCO to simplify the procedures for achieving UNESCO World Heritage sites status when countries had the desire to protect unique assets they had for prosperity. The Minister also appealed for a sustainable tourism brand to be agreed on in order to increase the visibility of tourism establishments who were joining their respective country's programs to go down the path of promoting sustainable tourism.

When he replied to questions from the floor, Minister Alain St.Ange said that the Seychelles had been successful in developing its tourism industry, because they had embraced the three key words that remained so essential for any tourism destination. "The three words that will always ensure a tourism destination remains relevant are 1. visibility, 2. Visibility, and 3. Visibility," the Seychelles Minister said. He went on to say that this was why Seychelles had entered the world of carnivals with their annual Carnaval International de Victoria in April which gave visibility to their co-host partners and to every participating country. The Minister emphasized that the carnival in Seychelles appeared on the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands calendar of events alongside the International Tourism Fair of Madagascar in May, the Culinary & Cultural Festival of Comoros in August, and the Festival Liberte Metisse (marking the abolition of slavery) of La Reunion in December.

Minister Alain St.Ange also said as he met the press after the United Nations meeting that he was happy to have flown to New York especially for this meeting. "We are here because we are putting our money where our mouth is. We believe in sustainable tourism, and we stand to be counted with all those who are like us, serious and committed partners of this change of mindset," the Seychelles Minister said.

NEW VANILLA ISLANDS AIRLINE CONNECTION BY AIR AUSTRAL

Air Austral resumes direct non-stop commercial flights from Reunion to Seychelles Island

Jun 24, 2014

Air Austral first non-stop commercial direct flight between La Reunion Island and the Seychelles has landed in Seychelles. It was exactly 20h25, Monday 23rd of June that an Air Austral Boeing 737, made its historical landing on the Seychelles International Airport with 93 passengers on board.

Passengers made their descent onto the tarmac, to entertainment by the Seychelles National Cultural Troupe. Joel Morgan, Minister of Home Affairs, Transport and Energy was joined by Anne Lafortune, Principal Secretary for Tourism and Sherin Naiken the Chief Executive Officer of the Seychelles Tourism Board as he made his way to the run way to welcome Air Austral’s six crew members.

Didier Alenard, Air Austral captain, piloted the 162 seater aircraft and along with his crew were greeted by Minister Morgan and his delegation at the foot of the air stairs. Minister Morgan said the resumption of Air Austral’s first commercial flight in Seychelles is an important step in opening direct link between Seychelles and Reunion.
“It’s an important step for Seychelles and Reunion because the resumption of Air Austral flights to Seychelles is the result of the political will of James Michel, President of Republic of Seychelles and Didier Robert, President of Regional Council of Reunion Island, to open connectivity between Seychelles and Reunion.” Joel Morgan, the Seychelles Minister of Home Affairs, Environment, Transport and Energy said

It was in 2013 that Air Austral suspended its flights to Seychelles. The recommencement of Air Austral’s direct non-stop flights to Seychelles sends a positive message to the tourism trade partners in Seychelles. The Reunion traffic benefits the small guest houses, self catering and small hotels and this business all but disappeared when the airline had discontinued its services sometime back.
It is known that the Seychelles secret brand, exclusively for small hotels, guest houses and self caterings, are all members of the island’s home grown properties and they were the preferred choice of establishments for tourists from Reunion Island.

Air Austral pulled out from Seychelles was a recipe of disaster for these properties, which had to tap into alternative markets to stay in business. With the re-surfacing of Air Austral on the Seychelles route, the Seychelles Tourism Board is intensifying its visibility campaign in La Reunion to help grow the business from this neighbouring island. Anne Lafortune, the Principal Secretary for Tourism said her department hope to work closely with the grouping “Vanilla Islands”, to consolidate the inter-island networking and have more twin and three centre packages soldacross the four corners of the world that would include Mauritius, Madagascar, Reunion, Comoros, Mayotte and Maldives.
Sherin Naiken, the Chief Executive Officer of Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) said the resumption of Air Austral flights to Seychelles is a positive move for the Seychelles tourism industry. She said the Tourism Board and the Reunion Tourism Office in Reunion Island (IRT) are working on joint marketing approaches to increase Air Austral’s loading factor. She said that the Tourism Board is being innovative in its approach to work with local tour operators and airlines to develop twin centre packages which will be beneficial for the Reunion and Indian Ocean market alike.

Air Austral’s two direct weekly flights will be operated on Mondays and Thursdays and returns flight to Reunion will leave Seychelles Tuesdays and Fridays. Passengers in Seychelles travelling to Reunion can book their flights with Mason’s Travel, the local agent of Air Austral in the Seychelles.

THE LEGACY OF SEYCHELLES MINISTER OF TOURISM AND CULTURE ALAIN ST.ANGE

How this tourism minister changed the world ?

BY KITTY POPLE, AFRICAN DIASPORA TOURISM | JUN 23, 2014

Alain St. Ange, Seychelles tourism and culture minister

It was over four years ago that the Honorable Seychelles Minister of Tourism and Culture Alain St.Ange came up with he idea of organizing a huge carnival where nations from around the world could parade their cultures. With many countries already having their own unique carnivals, St.Ange envisioned an international carnival that would bring nations together in one setting to not only showcase their cultures, but also to help promote an understanding of multiculturalism. He went on to launch the Seychelles International Carnival where communities of nations get the opportunity to network and socialize in a relaxed atmosphere. The first of its kind, the carnival, which has grown every year, has come to be known as the “Carnival of Carnivals.”

St.Ange says that the carnival is a unique world event for bringing nations together where different cultures are respected as well as celebrated. “Even in the General Assembly of the United Nations when some world leaders stand to deliver their address, some delegates walk out, but here respect for everyone is and will remain the key to ties of friendship and togetherness,” he explains.

Supporting St.Ange's view of the carnival, Canadian journalist Carol Perhudof said that she has come to believe that the "Carnaval International de Victoria" could help to change the world because it's a celebration of every culture together. “The Seychelles Carnival is a brilliant tourism idea that helps bring us to a point where we can live in harmony beyond colour of skin, to live in peace with each other,” said Perehudoff, after her first visit for Seychelles Fourth International Carnival.

Through this "Carnival of Carnivals," St.Ange has no doubt embarked on a global multicultural movement where people can capture the spirit of internationalism to gain a better understanding and appreciation of another country's culture. Seychelles Carnival has captured the interest of leaders, tourism officials and travelers alike from the world over. As word spreads near and far among VIPs, media sources and curious tourists, the carnival has continued to get more popular each year. So just what is it about St.Ange that has allowed him to be able to successfully devise such an ingenious way to propel people and nations to come together under one accord?

For one thing, he has been dubbed a master marketer and promoter by Creole International Magazine, as he was able to turn around visitation numbers to substantially increase tourism arrivals in Seychelles. Implementing and forging forth the tourism portfolio set forth by President James Michel, St.Ange's tourism approach and marketing methods have proven to be extremely effective, garnering him invitations from a host of countries and organizations that want to learn about the “Seychelles Tourism Brand” as a guide for replication.

One such organization that hosted him as a featured presenter is the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO). Huge Riley, Secretary General for CTO was happy to have St.Ange to share his winning strategies for the organization's State of the Industry Conference. “Minister St.Ange is well-known among tourism circles as a creative thinker and practitioner who is particularly skilled in helping to develop various countries’ tourism potential," said Riley. At the conference, St.Ange topic was “Redefining the Role of National Tourist Offices,” where he spoke about the changing face of the tourism industry over the past 60 years and how tourism officials must be able to adjust.

St.Ange has been interviewed by top media sources and journalist trying to get a peek at what makes him tick. Noted CNN journalist Anita Mendiratta has sited Seychelles Minister Alain St. Ange as a shining example of how to move tourism, trade, investment, understanding and opportunity forward. She said that St.Ange reflects vision, creativity, leadership ability and agility which she believes are job requirements for the role of Minister of Tourism. One of the things that St.Ange emphasized in the interview with her is how a tourism minister must be ready to be involved with local business interests, guiding local development, as well as international bodies and conferences. He believes this ensures that their country remains as visible as possible and in so doing remain relevant in the world of tourism.

Tony Vaughan of the South African magazine Property said that St.Ange entrance as a tourism official and the role that he played was very timely for Seychelles. He reported how St.Ange had defied the odds to bring tourism arrivals up doing a time of economic downturn. St.Ange commented how Seychelles was defying the trend with visitor arrivals up year-on-year by 12%. “We must be the only destination in the world reporting such growth in this economic climate. Quite simply, we've transitioned from a government led sector to a privately led sector fully backed by government, we've let go of the reigns, we've allowed the private sector to take control of what is in their best interest, and it's working. We've also launched the 'Affordable Seychelles' campaign to move the perception away from the idea that we only exist for the rich and famous," he asid. General Taleb Rafai

St.Ange has earned recognition for his work from countries as far away as China. The Chinese Xinhua News Agency labeled St.Ange as a “tourism guru” after his success in 2010 with a new tourism policy based on public-private partnerships and the strategy of diversification of the island nation’s source market. Xihhua News reported that the good performance of the Seychelles tourism industry shows that this economic pillar of the archipelago has resisted shocks of global economic recession, or better still, the recent threat to aerial transport by the Iceland volcanic ash. St.Ange explained that the new tourism policy of the Seychelles government was a win-win strategy where the state regulates the industry, while the private sector drives the industry.

On diversification, the tourism guru noted that the Seychelles had succeeded in moving away from its dependence on the traditional European market thanks to the aggressive work on the emerging markets. St.Ange said that their strategy has attracted increased number of visitors from such countries as South Africa, already the sixth source market for the Seychelles and also a hub for visitors from other countries, especially those from the United States. “There are also visitors from the Reunion, Kenya, India, and China, which constitute the emerging markets with great potential,” he explained.

Because of his outstanding work and proven leadership skills in tourism, St.Ange is a sought after-speaker and trainer whose tourism approaches have been studied around the African continent, and other various regions and countries. Always willing to share his knowledge, St.Ange could easily be labeled the “Minister of Tourism’s Minister of Tourism”. He has been elected to the Executive Council of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, and travel officials and industry leaders from the four corners of the world are continuously taking note of his accomplishments. St.Ange is a strong believer that an effective marketing strategy is the tourism industry, its sectors and different regions collaborating and working together.

Because he believes unity and collaboration is so important, he has solicited the partnership of other Indian Ocean Islands and countries to help present the carnival. La Reunion was the first to agree to partner for the Carnival when La Reunion's President of the Regional Council Didier Robert signed an MOU with St.Ange. Joining La Reunion as co-host of the 2014 International Carnival in Seychelles was Madagascar, Mayotte and South Africa KwaZulu Natal.

Acting on his belief in tourism partnering, in 2010 St.Ange spearheaded the launch of the Vanilla Islands Tourism Brand, a marketing concept that jointly promotes both the shared attractions of each member state, along with the factors that make each nation unique as a tourism product. As the inaugural president, St.Ange was at the hub of this marketing concept along with tourism ministers from La Reunion, Mauritius, Madagascar, and other smaller Indian Ocean islands.

st ange and didierPresident of the Regional Council of La Reunion Didier Robert, a key partner in launching the Vanilla Island concept, agrees with St.Ange that bridges can be built through the consolidation of common efforts. After St.Ange's two-year term Robert has taken over as president. “The reinforcement of cooperation between our Indian Ocean Islands is fundamental for the development of our respective islands," said Robert who has continued to build on his relationship with St.Ange in promoting Vanilla Islands and other initiatives.

St.Ange's strong belief in promoting, partnering and collaboration is what is helping to make Seychelles a global player on the world stage. For one thing, under his administration, airline flights to and from Seychelles have increased fostering tourism development and international travel. His relationships with airline partners and other businesses outside of the tourism industry in Africa and internationally have helped to put the island on the global radar.

Commenting on St.Ange's tourism tactics are Robert Desvaux, Chairman of Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority and Didier Robert, President of Vanilla Islands. Desvaux said, "Clever use of media contacts and a tireless dedication to promoting Seychelles through the media at any opportunity has paid enormous dividends and has helped bridge the information gap about the islands and place them squarely on the map." Robert went on to explain that St.Ange knows how to tap into the power of his resources to spread the word about Seychelles across the globe, earning the islands increased publicity. "His promotion of events-based tourism and the resounding success of the carnival has propelled Seychelles onto center stage, winning extensive press coverage for his burgeoning suite of events," said Robert.

St.Ange is also helping to raise the island's profile through such organizations as the International Council of Tourism Partners, (ICTP), a grassroots tourism coalition of global destinations committed to quality service and green growth. Having helped launch the organization a few years ago, St.Ange and other member leaders are committed to the promotion of responsible tourism through ICTP. Another one of St.Ange efforts that has helped to stretch island nation beyond its borders is the International Creole Institute in Seychelles. Building on the mission of the former Creole Institute of Seychelles in developing and promoting Creole culture, St.Ange helped to launch the new institute over a year ago. He is now leading the institute in gaining an international status where it represents different Creole countries in the region and beyond.

As St.Ange takes Seychelles to the world, he is at the same time bringing the world to Seychelles as evident through the Seychelles International Carnival. In addition to the carnival, he has to host some ICTP meetings in Seychelles, and has managed to convene various other global meetings in its capital city of Victoria. He got the seventh "Routes Africa," to come to Seychelles for its forum on key issues in African aviation where a record number of high ranking delegates attended. He also got the historic African Union (AU)Ministers of Tourism Meeting to be held in Seychelles, which was the "Meeting of the Ministerial Working Group on the Tourism Sector Development Strategy for Africa: AU Agenda 2063." Each successful meeting or event that St.Ange has convened usually results in the call and preparation for another important one.

This has been especially true after the carnivals that seem to give birth to a new global conference, initiative, or event each year. The Vanilla Island marketing concept and the International Council of Tourism Partners were initiated shortly after the first Seychelles carnival in 2010. It was after the 2014 Seychelles Carnival that it was decided with a unanimous vote to hold the UNWTO Commission For Africa (CAF) Ministerial Meeting 2015 in Seychelles, after a call by St. Ange at the 2014 event in Angola. Also shortly after the 2014 carnival, it was confirmed that the 2014 Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Tourism and Travel Mart will take place in Seychelles, again thanks to St.Ange.au group

With tourism collaboration as one of his major platforms for strategic marketing, St.Ange has called for the creation of a comprehensive tourism brand for the entire African continent. His initial appeal for an African brand was supported by leaders at the African Union Ministerial working group meeting for the Africa AU Agenda 2063 held in Seychelles. Committed to enhancing Africa's potential in tourism development through the African Union, St.Ange believes that the challenges felt and the rivalries on the continent can be seen with a fresh look when African States unite under an Africa Tourism Brand.

"The time is right and opportune for Africa to work with Africa,” explained St.Ange. “We Africans need to agree to grow our tourism cake together and that cake does not mean the African Union will be marketing our respective countries. We will always be the best in marketing our respective country, but the comprehensive Africa Tourism Brand will help increase our visibility and make us more relevant in the world of tourism,” he said. "The African continent needs an African brand that will promote our region in tourism trade fairs. We need a brand that will work hand in hand with United Nations World Tourism Organisation and UNWTO body,” said St.Ange.

A visionary leader with personal magnetism and far-reaching influence, St.Ange embodies some qualities of the greatest of world leaders. Like the late great Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the late world renown singer/activist John Lennon who both dreamed of world peace, St.Ange makes clear through his work and his speeches that he dreams of the day when the “world can live as one.” Because of his love for his country, Africa, humanity and the lengths that he will go to bring about harmony among races, St.Ange can also be likened to the late South African icon and former President Nelson Mandela. It is St.Ange's strong desire to serve humanity that inspires him to give his all and all, and dedicate his entire life to his work just as Dr. King, Lennon and Mandela did.

hosSince he is such a respected friend of leaders around the world, you might have guessed that St.Ange is also a beloved figure among his own people in Seychelles. The staff of Seychelles Tourism Board seem to like and respect him, which is a reason why they are willingly to put so much time and energy into their minister's projects. Even the locals describe him as an approachable, down to earth man, who is quite comfortable in his own skin. Perhaps this helps to explain why he is friendly and comfortable with people from all walks of life.

The journalist from around the globe, who light up when talking about him, have concurred that he is a very likable tourism minister. Bea Broda, a noted broadcast personality from Toronto who also makes her home in California sees St.Ange as a man who is full of compassion. "It is obvious to me that the success of the carnival is because of St.Ange's passion for people and Seychelles, and his desire to promote culture and tourism," says Broda, who has attended every carnival since the first one.

What is it that Seychellois people, world leaders and others like so much about St.Ange? Perhaps the reason St.Ange is well-liked can be explained relative to an answer that former U.S. President Bill Clinton gave when he was asked why black people liked him so much. Clinton said that he simply answered, “Because I like them.” Could this answer also be the magic bullet for St.Ange? He is a man who likes all types of people, period. No matter what creed, color, nationality, background or religious persuasion, St.Ange, a charismatic leader like Clinton, makes friends wherever he goes.

His passion for Seychelles and its people has been obvious through his work as the previous CEO of the tourism board and now as the Minister of Tourism. Under St.Ange's leadership in both position, new endeavors have been put in place or enhanced. Three important programs he launched that have helped to raise the islands profile around the globe are "Friends of Press-Seychelles" and "Seychelles Tourism Ambassadors" and the building of a brand new Seychelles Tourism Academy.

Other Seychelles events held under St.Ange's leadership in culture and tourism include Seychelles Festival of the Sea, Eco-friendly Marathon, Festival Kreol, Fet Afrik, La Fet La Digue, the Seychelles Ball and the Miss Seychelles Beauty Pageant. Proud of the fact the Seychelles is a "Melting Pot of Cultures," St.Ange believes that Seychelles can be an example of how different racial and ethnic groups can get along. He has continued to support and celebrate the cultural heritage of the groups of people that make up Seychelles.

fetafrikLast year launched the first Seychelles-India Day celebrations and earlier this year launched the first Seychelles-China Day celebrations. St.Ange proclaimed with delight, “Together with the Indian High Commissioner we are happy to announce the Seychelles first India day celebrations. Seychelles celebrates through Commonwealth Day its ties with Britain. Its French heritage is celebrated through La Francophonie Day, and its ancestral bond with Africa is celebrated through FetAfrik annually on Africa Day. Who we are today is also annually celebrated through our Kreol Festival, but our historical ties with India and China had remained the two missing elements on our calendar of events,” he said.

St.Ange, a firm believer in preserving heritage sites, has proposed to the African Union to establish a tourism body within the union for an African Union Heritage Site label. While waiting for UNESCO to declare the slave ruins at the Seychelles Mission Lodge of Sans Soucis to be a World Heritage site, he introduced the idea of Africa having its own heritage site label. “We all go through the lengthy procedures for UNESCO’s recognition of sites we are committed to protect for generations to come. The time has come to work together to give recognition to sites we see are dear to us, to our people, and to our country,” said St.Ange. He explained that this site needed to be saved for future generations, because it was a facility with history for young African slaves, coming from all over Africa, who landed in Seychelles by British ships at the time that slavery was being abolished.

Not only does St.Ange care about preserving the people's culture and heritage, he also cares about the Seychellois people on a more personal level. In one incident, St.Ange was invited by National Assembly member Derreck Samson to visit Danilo Albert, a prominent artist with a rare disease that confined him to a wheel chair. St.Ange went to the man's home and upon looking at his paintings and artwork, said that his ministry will provide Danilo with sufficient materials for him to continue painting. “It is touching to see that despite your disease, you’ve taken it upon yourself to seek help to be able to contribute not only for the well-being of your family, but also to play a part to contribute to the economy of the country," said St.Ange, the father of two adult daughters Christine and Michelle who lives in Australia. A supporter of families being independent, he believes that the role of tourism is also for the unification of the people of the destination through economic, social, environmental and ideological advancement and identity.

In addition to promoting tourism in terms of culture, another endeavor that he is developing and enhancing is sports tourism. And of course, he is using collaboration in his marketing plan. He has signed an MOU with Kirschlee Naidoo from Insane Fitness & Nutrition, Pretoria, South Africa with the aim of developing joint relationships in sports tourism as niche markets in South Africa. St.Ange believes that through the different marketing and promotion projects that Insane Fitness & Nutrition works on in South Africa, Seychelles would automatically be promoted. Mr Naidoo and St.Ange are also looking at a joint venture in promoting golf tourism to promote golf tournaments in South Africa and Praslin in Seychelles as well.

This hands on leader, who seems to do more than his share of legwork, believes in meeting people and situations where they are. This time literally, when he recently embarked on an innovative series of 'door to door' hotel visits to ensure that senior management teams understand the properties and its challenges as well as successes. Wanting to dedicate quality time with each hotel manager, St.Ange said,“It is time for us to break away from our traditional approaches of holding meetings with big groups of hotels. Sometimes personal meetings can help to understand the problems." It was doing a personal "door to door" hotel visits that he met Esther Reimann, a rental property owner in Praslin who had been having a problem with a tenant about dogs. "Mr. St.Ange is such a fair and good man," said Reimann, after the minister was able to resolve the problem in a way that was suitable to both parties.

P1070846Perhaps St.Ange’s ability to deal with people in such a positive way has roots in his family history. His father Karl St.Ange, a massive political figure during the early years of politics in Seychelles, was described by former President James Mancham as a man capable of meeting and discussing politics with Seychellois from all political spectrums who possessed a true ability to “humanise” politics in the mind of all involve. The latter St.Ange must have inherited a natural ability to effectively deal with people and a passion for his homeland from his father. St.Ange went on to study Hotel Management and Tourism in Germany and France before developing his career in hospitality in Seychelles.

His extensive career in hospitality and tourism, political upbringing, studying in Europe and working abroad in addition to his desire to serve people and his love for Seychelles has helped St.Ange to be so successful as the Minister of Tourism and Culture. His beliefs about tourism and culture being interrelated have also contributed to his success in this role. He says, “Tourism cannot exist without culture, because when culture is brought into the equation it is the people of the islands who are being recognised as the base for our tourism industry." The author and co-author of now ten books related to the social, political and cultural aspects of Seychelles, he believes that putting the culture in the forefront brings depth to the destination. “When one's culture is showcased we are putting our people at the centre of our tourism development," says St.Ange.

His extensive experience along with his knowledge about culture and tourism is what has helped St.Ange to create such a successful carnival, now ranked as the fifth best carnival in the world after only four years in existence. The enormous success of the fourth carnival is due to his ability to build on the successes of the previous three carnivals. The 2014 Seychelles International Carnival, with twenty-six carnivals from around the world participating, has more than doubled in size and attendance, and was more colorful and explosive than ever. For the first time St.Ange included a children's carnival because he supports the idea that endearing carnival in the hearts of children helps to guarantee that the event will go on for years to come. 2014 also saw the release of a new carnival song by Travis Julienne, Ole Ola en sel lavwa’’ a vibrational tune about carnival time composed and sang by Travis Julienne.

outside interviewAs the world awaits the 2015 Seychelles Carnival, a clearer picture has emerged about the man who created it. One might wonder what his future goals are. A career in politics? Perhaps not. St.Ange's legacy will probably remain in the tourism field. So what are his plans for the next carnival? Since we know more about the man who created it, and since it will be the carnival's fifth anniversary, it is surely guaranteed to be bigger and even better, a not-to-miss event. But no matter how big and exciting the carnivals continue to become, it is St.Ange's hope that the Seychelles International Carnival will eventually be seen as a symbol for world peace.

The essence of who St.Ange really is can be summed up in comparison to yet another great leader whose qualities he embodies: US President Barack Obama. It has been said that an asset of Obama is his keen ability to connect with, understand, and relate to people, which helped him to win the election. The same can be said of St.Ange, who also has a natural ability to influence people. Perhaps more importantly, just like President Obama, in the face of insurmountable odds, St.Ange is not afraid to set high goals, roll up his sleeve and say “Yes We Can." Just like President Obama, St.Ange is a leader whose time has come for implementing ideas and agendas that will set new standards in the world. One thing for certain is that you can surely bet on St.Ange being able to deliver and get the job done.

Minister Alain St.Ange is also a founding member of the International Coalition of Tourism Partners. ( www.ictp.travel )

Hotels & Restaurants contracting local artists benefit of 125% deduction in Business Tax

Jun 21, 2014

In the past few years, there has been an energetic revival of the Seychelles local music industry. This is obvious though the increased number of activities promoting the island's local music like the “Moutya night’’ to the promulgation of a new copyright act that gives broader protection of copyrights consistent with international best practice and in line with WTO agreement on Trade Related Aspects of International Property Rights (TRIPS) of which Seychelles is aiming to become a member.
But the question that remained in the industry at large was that if Government had any tax benefits that could be enjoyed by the Seychelles local musicians to continue encouraging this particular form of art in Seychelles? The simple answer is yes, through the form of targeted tax incentives.
Targeted tax incentives have widely been embraced by governments as an economic development tool to spur growth that might not have otherwise occurred. It is with this in mind, and recognising the importance of this industry, that the Seychelles Ministry of responsible for Finance, Trade and Investment in collaboration with the Ministry responsible for Culture, has put in place tax incentives for the benefit of the island's local musicians. This ranges from a reduction in customs duty and VAT on imported musical instruments and accessories to allowing 125% deduction under business tax when hotels and restaurants hire the services of local performing artists.
Following consultation with the industry, the Government felt that it was now ready to increase awareness of these new supporting measures that were introduced primarily for the artists involved in the Performing Art of Seychelles. Following a meeting at Liberty House between Minister Pierre Laporte, the Minister responsible for Finance, Minister Alain St.Ange, the Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, Benjamine Rose, the PS for Culture, Dr Steve Fanny, the PS at the Ministry of Finance and Jimmy Savy, the CEO of the NAC (National Arts Council) the Government has found it necessary to again draw the attention of Performing Artists and of the Hotels & Restaurants of the existence of such benefits to the tourism industry as a way of continuing to encourage the tourism industry to continue procuring the services of local performing artists. As was announced in this year’s budget, the Government will also extend such benefits to other stakeholders in the tourism industry.
This meeting at the Ministry of Finance, Trade and Investment at Liberty House follows a series of meetings starting with SeyMas, the NAC (National Arts Council) with the Minister of Finance in late October 2013 and one organised by the NAC (National Arts Council) on the 5th November 2013 for Artists Association Chairperson’s Forum in which the following issues were discussed:
Benefits of Artist through the Corporate Social Responsibility Tax (CSR).
The benefit that the hotel gets in their tax return when they pay a good remuneration package to the artist.
Exemption of business tax and other tax rebates to the artists.

On the 2nd of March 2014, the same issues were addressed in the chairman’s forum especially the process for CSR. This time Artist representatives from Praslin were also present in the meeting. The NAC (National Arts Council) also attended a meeting with Big 5 members late last year ( Patrick Victor, Joseph Sinon, Elijah, Sandra and Jean Marc Volcy) in which the Minister of Finance discussed lengthily on CSR and its benefit and other benefits of the new tax regime.

Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture said after the meeting that he wanted to thank the Government of Seychelles through the Ministry of Finance, Trade and Investment for answering the appeal for more benefits for the performing artists of Seychelles. "Benjamine Rose, the PS for Culture and her Team have been working close with me to see ways and means to continue to showcase our culture. For this to continue to happen we needed to see an injection of support into the industry and for the industry. The Targeted tax incentives by the Ministry of Finance, Trade and Investment is now a clear boost for the Tourism Trade of seychelles to call upon our performing artists and put creole flavour into our tourism establishments" Minister St.Ange said.

The Ministry of Tourism and Culture have been working with the Ministry responsible for Employment to protect the local Seychellois artists and they continue to reject the applications for foreign artists to play in hotels and resorts as House Band. "We need to see our local artists being recognised and contracted before we can even look at allowing resident bands coming from overseas. As a Government we have now increased benefits to make it interesting for Tourism Establishments to contract local performing artists. We shall continue to support our artists to develop their skills and will continue to encourage them in the promotion of our culture" Minister St.Ange said.

For the mid-ocean Islands of the Seychelles tourism remains the pillar of its economy. Since the last couple of years, the islands have managed their tourism industry through a working public / private sector partnership. The private sector led Tourism Board remains responsible for marketing whilst the Ministry of Tourism looks at all policy matters and acts as the facilitator for the industry that remains the backbone for economy of these beautiful islands. The Seychelles Tourism Board's Director of Marketing has been a private sector nomination ever since the move by the Seychelles Government to install a public / private sector partnership for their industry that remains key to their survival.

The Sustainable Tourism approach is the established way forward for Seychelles where a personalised tourism concept is seen to be promoted instead of the mass tourism approach of charter operations. Since the launch of the Tourism Master Plan marking the 40th Anniversary since the Official Opening of the Seychelles International Airport by Queen Elizabeth 11 of the United Kingdom, Seychelles has been promoting their very own Sustainable Tourism Label which is today giving a marketing edge to tourism establishments adhering to the forward thinking guidelines of this eco-tourism label.

“Our biggest asset is our national unity – Nothing is more important to me than this”

Jun 18, 2014

On the occasion of the Seychelles’ National Day on June 18, celebrating 21 years since the adoption of the constitution of the Third Republic, Seychelles President James Michel has spoken of the importance of national unity in his vision for a better future for the country, in an address at Stad Linite, where the National Day parade took place this afternoon.

The President of Cabo Verde, Dr. Jorge Carlos Fonseca, was guest of honor at the celebration.

President Michel said that this year is the last year that Seychelles celebrates 18th June as the National Day, as the government has undertaken procedures to celebrate 29th June, the anniversary of Seychelles’ independence in 1976, as the national day as of 2015.

“It is a date that is unanimously accepted among Seychellois. It is a unifying date. A date that rallies us around the symbols that represent our wealth, happiness and well-being of the people that we are. It is about national unity, patriotism, solidarity, fraternity, love and respect for our fellow Seychellois. It is quite right that we commemorate this indisputable date in our history with the importance that it deserves. That we accord it greater political, social, moral, institutional and cultural recognition. No one will ever contest this decision. It is the people themselves who have decided. We are doing it for all Seychellois. For our children. For posterity. For national unity,” said the President in his address.

He added that national unity is the only way to reach’ the new frontier’ and called on all Seychellois to join him in this endeavor, for the New Seychelles and for the children of Seychelles.

“Our biggest asset is our national unity. Nobody – I repeat nobody – will convince me of the contrary. Nobody will make me change my mind. Nothing is more important to me than this. And I will continue to dedicate my life, my energy, my work toward the promotion and strengthening of national unity.”

Mr. Michel announced that he would create a high level forum, which he will chair, which would include certain individuals – irrespective of their political affiliations – who have distinguished themselves by their knowledge, their experience, their goodwill and service to the nation.

“The role of this forum will be to deliberate on all issues which directly impact the national interest, and to make concrete proposals which government will consider seriously. Its members will be entirely free to debate any issue that concerns the future of Seychelles in any domain – national unity, inclusivity, political, economic, social, moral, cultural, etc. Consultations are the key to national unity. Consultations assist government in making good decisions.”

President Michel spoke about several initiatives that will be undertaken by the government.

Blue Economy

President Michel said that an important aspect of Seychelles’ sustainable development policy is the judicious management and exploitation of the blue economy, as a major contributor to its wider economy in the future. He added that several projects to enable Seychellois to participate in the blue economy are in progress.

Housing subsidies

The President said that government must intensify efforts to help families have access to their own homes. There are several measures the government is going to announce in the near future to contribute toward this objective. This includes an increase in the Housing Loan Scheme, from SR500,000 to SR750,000; increase in Second Housing Loan, from SR300,000 to SR400,000; an increase in Housing Extension Scheme; and a review of the criteria for the Home Savings Scheme. The measures will become effective from 1st July.

Furthermore, the Self-Financing Scheme will be activated between now and September with the starting of construction of houses at Ile Perseverance for people who have taken a loan under this Scheme.

Harmonizing laws for modern legislation

The President said Seychelles must become more productive, to deepen its knowledge. And become more creative and innovative, in order to attract more investment, local as well as foreign.

“Be smarter in the way we do business. Be smarter in our relations, and in the way we interact with the rest of the world….. We also need to harmonies our laws in line with our Constitution, modernize our legislation in conformity with best international practices, whilst taking into account our specificities, our culture and our traditions.”

New Providence Microenterprise Centre

The President said the countries needs to have more small businesses, more medium enterprises, so that the economy continues to grow.

“They are one of the pillars of our economy and motors of our development. This is one of the sectors where public-private sector partnership can flourish, and we need to encourage it. My Government accords it great importance and we will continue to support its development and expansion.

The opening of the Providence Microenterprise Centre in September will represent a significant step in this direction. Depending on demand and necessity, we will consider the creation of similar centers in regions in the future.”

CITYMAX BUR DUBAI HOTEL

Business travelers flock to home grown, 3-star brands in Dubai

BY MOTAZ OTHMAN, ETN MIDDLE EAST CORRESPONDENT | JUN 18, 2014

L-R: Motaz Othman & Walter Knight

As a travel journalist, traveling almost five months out of the year, the budget three-star hotels are mostly my choice. This year at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) Dubai, Citymax Bur Dubai was my choice which is a five-minute drive to the World Trade Center. During ATM, I had the chance to meet Mr. Walter Knight, GM of Citymax Bur Dubai, and I asked him a few questions:

MOTAZ OTHMAN: I enjoyed staying at Citymax Bur Dubai during ATM. I believe it’s one of the best three-star and budget hotels in Dubai. I also visited your stand at ATM and saw the Citymax stand looked like a 5-star hotel stand. Can you give me an idea of how you rate Citymax Hotels in the Dubai hotels market?

WALTER KNIGHT: Citymax Hotels is a home-grown, 3-star brand [in] the hospitality division of the Landmark Group, operating 3 hotels in prime city locations in the United Arab Emirates such as Al Barsha, Bur Dubai, and Sharjah and providing services and facilities of a 4-star hotel at a 3-star price.

MO: Due to busy days during ATM, I was not able to experience all the facilities at Citymax Bur Dubai. Can you tell me what your hotel offers its guests?

WK: What distinguishes Citymax from other 3-star hotels is the variety and high quality of the in-house restaurants and bars. Also, we offer additional services which one would generally only get in a high-end hotel such as 24-hour room service, full concierge services including porter services, full buffet breakfast, complimentary tea and coffee in your room, complimentary beach shuttle service as well as shopping center shuttle service, full gym facility with bathrooms, as well as a swimming pool.

The fact that we are able to provide these above-3-star-level services at very affordable prices without compensating on quality, places Citymax Hotels in a different bracket to your standard mid-market hotel.

MO: Do you have special offers in the coming summer time, as you know occupancy might drop in summer; what advantages do you offer your clients?

WK: Citymax Hotels is offering a special Summer Sale valid until 30 September 2014. … Rates are inclusive of free Wi-Fi. Minimum stay is two nights and rates are subject to [other] fee[s]. … Rates are not applicable from 28 July to 10 August, 2014. Summer Sale bookings [are] to be made online at citymaxhotels.com . Terms and conditions apply.

MO: What awards has Citymax Hotels received from different travel awards?

WK: Citymax Hotels is now the proud owner of two titles: Best Price Value Hotel, MENA Travel Awards, and [the] Middle East’s Leading Budget Hotel Brand, World Travel Awards.

MO: I understand that Citymax has three hotels now in UAE - your Bur Dubai, Sharjah, and Barsha. Does the company have plans for more hotels in the UAE or in GCC countries?

WK: Yes, Citymax Hotels is planning to further grow the mid-market segment of the hotel industry in the coming years in the UAE, where additional rooms are much needed in the 3-star category, as well further afield in the GCC. Three new properties are planned in Al Barsha, Business Bay in Dubai, and Ras Al Khaimah, all in varying stages of construction and scheduled for completion by 2016. This will bring the total inventory to around 2,000 rooms within the next 3 years with further properties close to finalization of lease agreements in Abu Dhabi and Fujairah.

MO: What would you like to say to business travelers who are coming to Dubai, since your Citymax Bur Dubai is so close to the World Trade Center, and that makes your hotel one of the best budget hotels for business travelers?

WK: We would say welcome! We have an increasing number of business travelers staying at our hotel. In general, the mid-market hotel industry is expanding partly due to the growing number of business travelers looking for a good deal but also due to the increased presence of budget airlines such as flydubai and Air Arabia. In the first quarter of 2014, passenger traffic rose by 11.4% to a record 18.36 million, making Dubai Airports the busiest in the world, surpassing Heathrow for the first time.

MO: Does your hotel depend on Internet selling more than direct business that comes from tour operators?

WK: Not at this stage. Our feeder markets still come through tour operators which contributes to the majority of our occupancies on any given day. I would also like to add that the corporate market still prefers to book direct which makes up for our second largest market. In saying this, online reservations are increasing year on year, however, the preferred method of sale is still direct.

Cabo Verde & Seychelles discuss tourism at Ministerial level

Alain St. Ange, Seychelles tourism minister and Santos de Brito, Cabo Verde minister tourism

Minister Humberto Santos de Brito, the Cabo Verde Minister for Tourism, Industry and Energy and Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture met yesterday to discuss cooperation in the field of Tourism. The meeting that took place at the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Offices at Espace was the opportunity for the two Ministers to look at the historic October meeting called by the UNWTO and ICAO for Tourism and for Transport Ministers. Both Ministers spoke about the importance of air access for their respective island's tourism industries and thus their support for this coming meeting.
They also discussed Cabo Verde's participation in the Festival Kreol that is held in October and also in the April Carnaval International de Victoria that are both held in the seychelles as well as the seychelles participation in the February participation in the carnival in Cabo Verde. The continued support of each other in International Tourism Forums is a point discussed as both Ministers agreed that speaking to defend small island states automatically defended both Seychelles and Cabo Verde at the same time. The proposed Tourism Tax by the African Union was also discussed and both islands said that they remained steadfast in their opposition to that tax that would be seen as a step backward for tourism in Africa as a whole.

Minister Humberto Santos de Brito, the Cabo Verde Minister for Tourism, Industry and Energy and Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture know each other well as they meet often in different Tourism Trade Fairs of Forums in the different parts of the world. The tourism promotion of a region is often quite difficult as it is not only reliant on the choices made by the location's officials and representatives, but also on the quality of the images that are shown of that location.

The Vanilla Islands Organisation (VIO) wishes to encourage the locals to participate in its action of promotion on the various social media options so that the images that are published offer a wider selection of the Vanilla Islands showing different perspectives and a wider variety of photos depicting what these islands have to offer. And who better to ask than someone who lives there?

The Vanilla Islands consists of the Seychelles, Madagascar, Reunion Island, Mauritius, Comoros, Mayotte, and Maldives. From these Indian Ocean islands, the VIO is planning to launch the social media operation as “Carte Blanche from..."

Each week a photographer on each island of the Vanilla Island group will have editorial "Carte Blanche" to choose the photos that s/he finds most representative of their own particular island. This photographer will have free artistic reign without interference or proposition from the staff of the Vanilla Islands. In this way, s/he will participae directly to show Internet users their own personal vision of tourism on their island.

Seychelles Tourism Academy takes over cost of students' ferry charges

Jun 17, 2014

Photos from Seychelles Ministry of Tourism and Culture

The Seychelles Tourism Academy is taking over ferry fees of La Digue students studying at the Academy Annex on the island of Praslin. Effective July 2014, the Academy will bear the student’s ferry fee when they travel between the two islands to follow their courses in Praslin.

Presently, ten students from La Digue are studying at the Tourism Academy Annex on Praslin. Once every week they travel to Praslin to follow their course.

The Academy is also studying a proposal for students' bus passes. These passes will cut down on students' cost to travel to and from the Annex that is situated at Baie Sainte Anne on Praslin. Currently, the students at the Seychelles Tourism Academy Praslin Annex are bearing both buses and ferry fares. These new measures came in the wake of a visit by the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, Alain St.Ange, at the Seychelles Tourism Academy Annex on Praslin. Minister St.Ange felt it was important that the parent Ministry of the Academy accompanied these students in their studies to successfully complete their courses and join the hospitality and tourism industry as young professionals.

“If we say that tourism is the pillar of the economy, then we need to continue to facilitate the training years of our students and build our student’s capacity to facilitate their entry into the industry," Alain St.Ange, the Minister for Tourism and Culture said.

The Annex of the Seychelles Tourism Academy is located in one of the classrooms of the Baie Sainte Anne Primary school. Students converted this small classroom into an area dedicated to their practical and theoretical Kitchen and Pastry, Restaurant and Bar courses. Due to the unavailability of space, the Housekeeping and Reception course is offered by the Academy at the Praslin Bahaii Centre at Baie Sainte Anne. Forty-two students from Praslin and La Digue are taking their courses at the Tourism Academy Annex. The numbers could eventually go up as interest is constantly growing to have more people on these islands trained on their home turf for a career in the Hospitality and Tourism industry.

The Ministry of Tourism and Culture understands that the only way to increase its quotas of graduates on these islands is to opt for a bigger modern school. Alain St.Ange came out with a new proposed plan to build a wing of the proposed Culture Building as a new Tourism Academy at Baie Sainte Anne on Eve Island.

“Our dream is to have a hotel and restaurant d'application on Praslin. The Ministry of Tourism and Culture already has a plot of land on Eve Island. It is clear that we need to ensure that a wing of this proposed Culture Building becomes the Tourism Academy on this island. It is clear; there is a need for it,” Minister St.Ange said.

The Seychelles Tourism Academy has turned what used to be an Apprentice scheme pilot project, into a full-fledged Annex of the Academy. In 2004, the Praslin Apprentice Scheme opened with 21 students. Conceived as a pilot project run by professionals of the tourism industry, the Praslin Apprentice Scheme started by offering three courses - Kitchen and Pastry, Restaurant and Bar, and House Keeping and Reception. In 2007, the scheme became a branch under the Seychelles Tourism Academy to be later called the Praslin Annex of the Seychelles Tourism Academy. The range of courses offered, however, has remained unchanged. The course contents are similar to the ones offered by the Seychelles Tourism Academy on Mahe. In its bid to diversify courses offered by the Praslin Annex, the Seychelles Tourism Academy will in 2015 be introducing a new course in Wellness and Spa.

Minister Alain St.Ange used his visit to the Praslin Annex to congratulate Flavien Joubert, the Principal of the Tourism Academy, and his team and also thestaff members responsible for the operation on Praslin. "You are showing that where there is a will, there is a way. The students have reconfirmed that they appreciate the courses on offer and the tourism trade on Praslin are today appreciating the level of training being offered and the results of training that is so apparent in the trainees. I want to reassure you all that the government stands with you lecturers and students, and together we shall continue to move forward and deliver what is expected of the Tourism Academy," Minister St.Ange said.

Seychelles' successful model of sustainable tourism is being put under the microscope by Cabo Verde, through the World Bank.

A technical committee comprised of representatives from the World Bank, the Cabo Verde private sector, the Ministry of Finance, Tourism Board, Chamber of Commerce headed by Humberto Brito, and Cabo Verde’s Minister for Tourism, Industry and Energy, met with Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture; Benjamine Rose, Principal Secretary for Culture; Sherin Naiken, Chief Executive Officer of the Seychelles Tourism Board; and Sinha Levkovic, Director of Standards and Regulations in the Tourism Department, to discuss the Seychelles best practices of sustainable tourism to help develop tourism growth in Cabo Verde.

Before getting down to business, Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, welcomed his counterpart and his technical committee at the table of discussion. Minister St.Ange outlined efforts to strengthen cooperation between Seychelles and Cabo Verde.

“We are small island states with common challenges. We are all vulnerable as island developing states. Our biggest single asset is our tourism industry, and for Seychelles this remains the pillar of our economy. We should consolidate this industry and as islanders ensure we claim back our key industry.”

Seychelles and Cabo Verde shares the same blue sea and white sandy beaches. But compared to Cabo Verde, Seychelles has learned to be innovative in its approach to achieve tourism growth. The Seychelles Ministry of Tourism and Culture is playing the card of visibility and its diversity of culture to outshine its fierce competitors. It is also clear for Seychelles that tourism cannot exist without its people. The population’s participation in this industry must not only continue, but it must increase, the Seychelles Minister explained in his deliberations.

“My statement is clear. The people of Seychelles needed to claim back its industry. Our people understood the meaning of this phase, and its implication. Today we can proudly say, we’ve claimed back our industry, because our people are today more than ever before in the front line of their industry," Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture said.

Tourism sustainability is one of the founding axes of Cabo Verde’s Tourism Master Plan. The World Bank is accompanying Cabo Verde to further build this concept. Humberto Brito, Cape Verde’s Minister for Tourism, Industry and Energy, said his country’s mission is to grow its tourism figure and for tourism to achieve more for the country than 20% of its country’s gross domestic product, as is the case today.
