SHANGHAI CONSULATE GENERAL

Shanghai a key location to promote tourism to Seychelles

Jul 30, 2013

The preparations for the opening of the Seychelles Consulate General in Shanghai, China, is well underway and is set to help develop and expand the commercial and economic cooperation between the two countries.

During a meeting held this week with the Leaders of the Shanghai municipal government, Mr. Jean Paul Adam, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Seychelles, has extended his appreciation to the municipal government for its collaboration with the Seychelles authorities in establishing a presence in Shanghai to better support the economic and people to people exchanges between the two countries.

The proposed Consulate General will cover the Shanghai municipality, Jiangsu Province, and Zhejiang Province.

During his visit to Shanghai, the Minister also had the opportunity of visiting the Huawei Technologies Cooperation, which is a leading ICT leading solutions provider. Huawei, a private company established in 1987, is now among the first five ICT providers in China and has 16 regional headquarters with operations in over 140 countries.

During the visit, Minister Adam stated that despite the differences in size between the two countries, there were many mutually beneficial economic opportunities to be taken up:

"Very large countries such as China, and very small countries such as Seychelles, need to invest in technology and in efficiency to ensure competitiveness. The small market in Seychelles can allow quick adoption of new technologies, and we are an ideal testing station."

Minister Adam also added that Shanghai was a key location for the growth and promotion of tourism, and thus the importance of establishing its first Consulate General of this kind in Shanghai.

WHAT A GOLF COURSE!

Seychelles listed in the 10 of the best golf courses in Africa

Jul 28, 2013

Tony Smart publishes a list of the 10 best golf courses of Africa for CNN. Seychelles has one of the most spectacular golf courses, but it remains relatively unknown as they have for some reason or another kept that privacy which today brings influential and many a star to play golf on that designer golf course of their Praslin Island.

Tony Smart for CNN writes: "For a reputedly impoverished continent, Africa has a remarkable number of golf courses - 828 courses in 50 countries with a little more than half of those, 450, located in South Africa. Egypt, Kenya, Mauritius, Morocco, South Africa, Tunisia, and Zimbabwe are all gaining reputations as good destinations for a golf holiday. There are 43 other countries in Africa with multiple courses (Nigeria has 50 and Zambia has 21), and it won't be much longer before some of them join that list. If you're contemplating a golf holiday in Africa, here's my list of the 10 best golf courses in Africa, in alphabetical order by country. All are great courses and, with the exception of the Seychelles, there are plenty of other excellent courses in each country if you like variety.

On the Seychelles Lemuria Hotel Golf Course Tony Smart writes:

"Lemuria Golf Course, Praslin Island, Seychelles: The 5,827-yard, par-70 course at the Lemuria Resort on Praslin Island in the Seychelles is the only 18-hole course in this Indian Ocean archipelago. But what a golf course! What it lacks in length this beautiful layout more than makes up for in the challenge it presents. Designed by Rodney Wright and Marc Farry, and opened in 2000, the first 12 holes play through narrow palm-lined fairways beside the resort itself with plenty of water and sand waiting for wayward shots. The remaining six holes rise up into the island's hills providing panoramic views across the course, the island, and other islands in the distance, while the fairways get narrower and the challenge harder. Apparently the record for number of lost balls in one round stands at 40, so take plenty of ammo with you. But if you ever get the chance to play here, grab it, because this is truly one of the most beautiful golf courses I've ever played anywhere in the world. Green fees here are included in room rates for golfers staying at the resort although compulsory carts have to be paid for (SCR 760/$64). Green fees for anyone not staying at the resort are SCR 1,610 including cart. Lemuria Golf Course, Anse Kerlan, Praslin, Seychelles: +248 4281 281."

GET A JUMP ON TRAVEL PLANS

Christmas holiday with the stars in paradise

Minister Alain St.Ange chairing the “Christmas with the Stars” evening

Jul 26, 2013

Seychelles is wasting no time preparing for the holiday season this year. With Christmas on their minds in the month of July, meetings are taking place, plans are being made, and lists are being checked twice.

The Seychelles Ministry responsible for Tourism and Culture and their National Arts Council met with representatives of the island's musicians, choirs, musical bands, and known musical personalities at their offices at the National Cultural Centre in Victoria to discuss the launch of the end-of-year festivities set for December 7, which everyone hoped should also be the date when the decorative lights though Victoria will be switched on.

The meeting was chaired by Minister Alain St.Ange, the island's Minister responsible for Tourism and Cultural himself, and he was accompanied by Ms. Benjamine Rose, the PS for Culture; Mr. Jimmy Savy, the CEO of the National Art Council (NAC); and Mr. Rassin from the Mayor of Victoria's Office.

Minister St.Ange said the Ministry of Tourism and Culture was working with the Office of the Mayor, the community of artists, and choirs to mark the 2013 end-of-year festivities with an evening with a difference.

"We need to work with the community of artists, and we need to work with our country's choirs to make this 2013 end-of-year festivities one that will set the stage for the years to come. Christmas and the end-of-year celebrations remain dear to us as a people and as a country, and we owe it to ourselves and to our country to provide a launch of these celebrations where families, where young couples, where the elderly can all come together for a musical spectacle with Christmas songs, carols, and end-of-year songs by our professionals accompanied by budding artists. We all know when the community of artists decide to come together, what a magical evening they can stage for Seychelles," Minister Alain St.Ange said.

"At this second meeting, the representatives of the island's musicians, choirs, musical bands, and other known musical personalities all agreed that the time is right for everyone to come together to give Seychelles a family evening out with entertainment, fun, and end-of-year Christmas and the arrival of the New Year songs we have all loved and cherished throughout our lives," Minister St.Ange said.

Mr. Jimmy Savy of the NAC discussed the setting up of the show management as Mr. Patrick Victor, the representative of the Musicians Associations, echoed his commitment for the “Christmas with the Stars” evening, and the representatives of some choirs agreed to all come together for a spectacular night also with carols.

The organizers promised some real surprises for that evening where Victoria will see a display with musicians arriving on stage by means never seen before by the general public.

Seychelles President Michel meets with President of the United Nations General Assembly

President James Michel, Mr. Vuk Jeremic , President of UNGA

Jul 21, 2013

Seychelles President James Michel met with the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Mr. Vuk Jeremic at State House this afternoon. Mr. Jeremic is in Seychelles to address the AIMS Regional Preparatory Meeting for the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

President Michel congratulated Mr. Jeremic on his dynamic presidency of the UNGA during the last year, where the interests of the developing world were often brought to the forefront of its discussions.

"Thank you for championing the cause of Small Islands Developing States and for the support you have given us in the AIMS Regional Preparatory Meeting. This will make a difference in the agenda which is set for the Samoa conference, and further promote our common aims for sustainable development, "said the President.

Mr. Jeremic said that the conference is timely and will provide an opportunity for SIDS to make their voices heard and ensure they have a constructive and active role in the development agenda in the UNGA.

" We will be discussing the post-2015 development agenda currently being developed in the United Nations, and in particular the priorities of the small island states.... We discussed how these priorities can be integrated in the broader goals of the international community," said Mr. Jeremic.

The President of the UNGA commended Seychelles for the progress it has made in its economic and social development, and added that Seychelles is making a strong impact with its work within the United Nations system.

"Seychelles is a small country but a very visible country in the international community...I think the Seychelles balanced very well the interests of various countries, like in the fight against piracy.... in development issues, renewable energy and the blue economy.... You do have a good image in the United Nations," said Mr. Jeremic.

Mr. Jeremic added that in the UN General Assembly each country has one vote, and by grouping together to form a common position on issues that are their priority, small island states, which are large in numbers, therefore have a serious negotiating power in the United Nations. Furthermore, Mr. Jeremic expressed his confidence that the Seychelles bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council 2017-2018 term would be successful in the vote in 2016.

• Vuk Jeremić was elected President of the sixty-seventh session of the United Nations General Assembly on 8 June 2012. At the time of his election, he was serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, an office he held starting on 15 May 2007. He ends his term in the UNGA in mid - September 2013.

EARTH DIALOGUE CONFERENCE IN RUSSIA

Former Soviet President Grobachev invites former Seychelles president Mancham

Jul 20, 2013

It is announced from Glacis-sur-Mer in the Seychelles that the Seychelles founding President, Sir James R. Mancham has accepted the invitation of Mikhail Gorbachev, the founding President of Green Cross International, Mr Jan Kulczyk, the present Chairman and Mr Alexander Likhotal, the current President, to participate in the Earth Dialogues Conference that the Green Cross International is organizing in connection with its 20th anniversary which will take place on the 3rd of September, 2013 at le Palais des Nations in Geneva under the patronage of the Director-General of UNOG, Mr Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

The title of the conference is “Pathways into the Future: Triggers of Change”. The conference is being organized to provide rich discourse and exchanges on the critical questions of peace, security, environment and development with the objective of formulating a “Geneva Appeal” and providing a road map to achieve “the future we want” as outlined in the RIO +20 document.

Mikhail Gorbachev was the leader of the Soviet Union from 1985 until its demise in 1991. The first Soviet leader to be born after the revolution, he tried to reform the Soviet Union with his policy of glasnost (openness) and perestroika (restructuring), attempting to infuse the communist society and economy with a market dynamism. He was widely popular in the West largely because of the way he managed the dismantling of the Soviet empire allowing the Berlin Wall and iron curtain to fall without Soviet military interference. His attempts at reform help to end the cold war but also ended the political supremacy of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) and unintentionally resulting in the dissolution of the Soviet Union on Christmas Day 1991.

Jan Kulczyk born in 1950 in Poland, is a business man who, according to Forbes Magazine, is the richest citizen of Poland with an estimated net worth of 2.6 billion Euros. In 2013, he was ranked 284 on the world’s billionaires list by Forbes moving up to the rank through his continuously diversified port folios of investment, notably in Africa where Kulczyk’s investments holds a 40% stake in Neconde Energy Ltd, a corporation which acquired an oil production license in Nigeria. Kulczyk Holding is headquartered in Warsaw with its investment holdings being run from offices in Luxembourg, London, Kiev and Dubai.
Alexander Likhotal was born in Moscow in 1950 with a distinguished academic background. He became senior research fellow at the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs where he became Professor of Political Science and of International relations. In 1991 Alexander was appointed Deputy Spokesman and advisor to the President of USSR. He remained with President Gorbachev, after his resignation as his advisor and Spokesman. He is very active as the International Media Director at the Gorbachev Foundation.
Mr Kassy-Jomart Tokayev, currently Director-General of the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG) was formerly the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, a position which he held over 10 years. In 2011, the Secretary-General of the United Nation announced his appointment as Under Secretary-General, and Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva and as the personal representative of the United Nations Secretary-General to the conference on disarmament.

Sir James who is an elected member of the Committee of the Wise and Elders of COMESA; an Honorary Councillor of the World Future Council (WFC); a member of the Board of Governors of the Savannah Ocean Exchange; a Vice-President of Centrist Asia-Pacific Democrats International (CAPDI); a member of the Academic Council of European Centre for Peace Development (ECPD); a co-Chairman of the Global Peace Foundation (GPF); a member of the presidium of the Council of the Eco-Safety Collaborative Organization (IESCO) and a member of the Board of Advisors of the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy (ICD), said that he feels highly honoured and delighted in starting an association with the Green Cross International which today operates globally and has offices in and around 30 countries and which has over the last two decades been responding to the combined challenges of security, poverty and environmental degradation in a remarkable way – adding his appreciation for the Green Cross International role in the Climate Change Task Force - an independent Non-Governmental Committee to urgently step up the global response to the challenges of Climate Change.

SUPPORT MINSTER ALAIN ST.ANGE FOR UNWTO EXECUTIVE COUNCIL FOR AFRICA

UNWTO Africa: Open letter of support by eTN Publisher Juergen Thomas Steinmetz

(L to R): Juergen T. Steinmetz & Alain St.Ange at the IIPT conference Lusaka 2011

Jul 19, 2013

ETN Publisher Juergen Thomas Steinmetz is issuing this open letter of support for the Hon. Alain St.Ange, Minister of Tourism and Culture for the Republic of the Seychelles.

Dear Friends & Colleagues:

After serious consideration, I am personally pleased to support the Minister of Tourism and Culture for the Republic of the Seychelles, Alain St.Ange, in his bid for election to the African seat on the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Executive Committee.

As many already know, this election will be held in late August during the UNWTO Annual Summit being jointly hosted by Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The summit is uniquely scheduled to be held on both sides of the magnificent Victoria Falls, and will bring renewed focus to African tourism, which according to available statistics, only received some 53 million visitors last year, compared to well over a billion travelers worldwide. This constitutes a modest 5 percent of global tourism movements, something Alain St.Ange is intent to change.

In the Seychelles tourism, Minister Alain St.Ange has launched multiple highly-successful, original marketing campaigns to raise awareness of the archipelago, working closely with global media outlets to substantially increase awareness and passenger arrivals to his destination. Since his appointment as the Director of Tourism Marketing, Alain was tasked to take over a reinvigorated and reinvented Seychelles Tourism Board before being appointed Minister of Tourism and Culture last year in March 2012.

The Seychelles has been in the media spotlight continuously since his appointment, and his many friends across Africa are keen to see him bring his substantial expertise to the UNWTO Executive Council where he would bring the same level of commitment and energy to market Africa like he marketed the Seychelles and double the continent’s arrival number within the next few years.

Alain St.Ange understands the role a positively-inclined media can play in helping shape a destination and subsequently created media alliances spanning the entire globe, with the Seychelles gaining awareness far beyond expectations and beyond an island destination, even with 115 islands and 220,000+ visitors in 2012, which might ordinarily be commanded.

Alain's passion for his home islands undoubtedly will translate into the same passion to get Africa a seat on the world tourism stage should he be elected, something many of his colleagues in Africa want to see happen.

When St.Ange was still the CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board, his brainchild was the Carnaval International de Victoria. The idea was to bring the world together to Africa. It was not just about the Seychelles, it was meant to be the carnival of the world. I had the privilege to attend all the carnivals, and I can attest here that Africa came together on this small island nation.

His dual destination/holiday partnerships with African mainland destinations, promoting both safaris as well as top-tier beach vacations on Mahe, Praslin, La Digue, and the other islands across the extent of the Indian Ocean, also brought him many admirers on the continent who appreciate how he is tuned into promoting not just his home islands but destinations well beyond their own shores.

The Vanilla Island cooperation of Indian Ocean islands from as far as La Reunion over Mauritius, Madagascar, Mayotte, Comoros, and the Seychelles demonstrates that Alain St.Ange looks well beyond his own shores, a rare quality among professionals and more so politicians, a quality normally reserved for visionaries from the private sector.

Minister St.Ange is indeed a genuine visionary and thinks big, while not forgetting the small details that make up the framework of successful tourism marketing. Alain has well-thought-out, meaningful directions and ideas to bring Africa together, and his philosophy of friends of all, enemies of none, has gained him respect in all parts of the globe.

ETurboNews has proudly been a partner of the Seychelles to help convey this philosophy globally. With St.Ange elected as Africa's representative on the UNTWO, global tourism and Africa will benefit greatly.

I have personally known Minister St.Ange even before he was involved with the Seychelles Tourism Board. Way before he became involved with Seychelles’ tourism, Alain contributed to numerous articles from a wide variety of African destinations. He always was careful to unite Africa and has become a highly-regarded African tourism role model and leader.

It is my personal belief the Honorable Alain St.Ange will bring fresh and original African insights with a keen global vision to the UNWTO Executive Council.

On behalf of our global eTN publication, I fully support his nomination to join the UNWTO Executive Council.

Very best regards,
Thomas Steinmetz

Jul 18, 2013

The New Zealand Minister of Foreign Affairs and MP for East Coast Bays, the Hon. Murray McCully, who is in Seychelles for the AIMS (Atlantic, Indian Ocean and South China Seas) sub-regional grouping meeting, made time to call on Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture. The New Zealand Minister was accompanied by Ambassador James Kember, the New Zealand Ambassador just accredited to Seychelles.

The two Ministers discussed the tourism development in Seychelles and also the moves to diversify the islands’ tourism source markets. On the marketing front they discussed their Tourism Board's presence at tourism trade fairs and the use of events to promote tourism through culture and people. Minister McCully said as he was leaving the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Offices at the national Cultural Center in Victoria that he would discuss the participation of New Zealand at the annual Carnaval International de Victoria that is staged in Seychelles the last weekend of April with his Minister responsible for Tourism.

"This annual carnival is very much a festival of color as it is an opportunity for countries, as they do in tourism trade fairs, to fly their flags to showcase their unique selling points but this time using culture and people as their key assets. This Indian Ocean Carnival remains the only carnival where the best and most known carnivals parade together followed by cultural troupes from the Community of Nations," Minister St.Ange of the Seychelles told the New Zealand Minister.

The mid-year general staff meeting was the opportunity for the Minister and his senior officials to look back at the last six months on the happenings affecting Seychelles tourism and to list what he saw as challenges. He reminded all staff of the importance to be team players and to feel proud to be part of the industry that remains the pillar of the Seychelles economy.

"Tourism can open many doors and bring more to each and everyone involved, but the responsibility for success also lies with each team member of the Tourism Board. Being proactive in defending the industry, being well groomed, being team players, and wanting to part of the team instead of being in the position only for the month-to-month salary," Minister St.Ange said.

The Minister gave examples of comments received at the Information Offices on Mahe, Praslin, and La Digue, on incidents touching tourists and affecting their impression of Seychelles as a holiday destination, on events organized by the Tourism Board, etc.

Minister Alain St.Ange also took time to speak on the marketing of Seychelles and for the need to keep on being innovative in order for the islands to remain relevant as a tourism destination. The Minister was followed by the recently appointed Tourism Board CEO, Mrs. Sherin Naiken, who took the gathered team of the Tourism Board through her approach as the new CEO. Mrs. Naiken explained that she will continue to manage with an open-door policy as did her predecessor and expressed her desire for staff to remain united in order to deliver for Seychelles.

Mrs. Elsia Grandcourt, the outgoing CEO of the Tourism Board, was thanked by Minister Alain St.Ange for her work and loyalty. "We wish you well in your new posting, and we know that you will fly our flag high wherever you are," Minister St.Ange said.

Mrs. Grandcourt also took the opportunity to address the meeting and she thanked the Minister, the management, and the whole team of the Tourism Board for their support during her three years on the Board. "I leave knowing we have done a lot together, but also I know that the Tourism Board has many a new challenge to face and to address," Mrs. Grandcourt said.

They raised interesting feedback which warranted a follow-up which resulted in the Ministry inviting the whole team responsible for the Tourism Academy to be present for a parent/student meeting. The Ministry of Tourism and Culture is managed with an open-door policy, and we value feedback from all those who have dealings with any department of our ministry. Today we heard both sides of the matter tabled and agreed on a way forward which hears the expectations of parents and students of our Tourism Academy as well as maintaining the academic discipline practiced at the Academy itself," said Minister St.Ange after the meeting.

Seychelles Hotel L'Archipel of Praslin goes green

Jul 13, 2013

Seychelles is known as being a tourism destination promoting the sustainable tourism concept and that remains being seen as eco-friendly throughout the world of tourism.

After two years of research and planning, Hotel L’Archipel on Praslin has confirmed that they have taken the wonderful initiative to “go green” at this magnificent property by implementing numerous renewable energy solutions with a positive impact to the environment and in so doing improving guest comfort through joint efforts.

The project has been passionately driven by M.r Louis D’Offay, the Managing Director of the property, with wonderful support from his team.

Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, has welcomed the initiative undertaken by Hotel L'Archipel to go green. "You have always believed in sustainable tourism, because you conceived a tourism establishment that blended in with the environment of our beautiful islands. Now you have taken the step to join the caring partners in the world of tourism to be listed as a hotel meeting the norms so much sought after by conscientious traveler," Minister St.Ange said as he congratulated Mr. Louis D'Offay and his team at Hotel L'Archipel.

Pace Seychelles has worked closely with the team at L’Archipel in auditing the energy consumption at the property to prepare a short-, medium- and long-term strategy for implementing the following green initiatives:

ENERGY MANGEMENT SYSTEMS (EMS)
All refurbished rooms have been installed with Inncom’s EMS Systems with intelligent occupancy detection to control the rooms’ energy consumption in rented and unrented states.

Guest comfort has been improved, condensation and humidity dramatically reduced, while achieving a 30% saving of the in-room air-conditioning energy consumption.

SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC PANELS

The property is currently installing 244 solar PV panels in Phase One with an annual production of over 108,000 kwh, which saves about 28,850 liters of diesel fuel annually. Not burning this fuel saves 76.8 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, which is the equivalent pollution of removing 16 cars from the road permanently.

LED LIGHTING

All refurbished rooms have been installed with efficient LED lighting, reducing the rooms’ lighting demand by 80%. Phase two of converting the property to LED lighting will be the installation of the entire garden with Exlite solar LED lights.

INNU-SCIENCE BIOTECHNOLOGY CLEANING – GREEN CLEANING

The property has successfully implemented phase one of biotechnology cleaning with the short-term goal to reduce chemicals usage to 10% within the next 6 months.

This initiative will have another positive impact to the environment and the health of their guests and staff.

OZONE WASHING CLEANING

Hotel L’Archipel is using various Ozone technologies for safe bacterial cleaning of food, cutlery, and crockery to provide a bacteria-free environment in the kitchens, while dramatically reducing chemical and energy usage in the kitchen by over 50%

To promote the awareness of the efforts and commitments from Hotel L’Archipel to the environment and the hospitality industry, Pace Seychelles and Hotel L’Archipel has launched an awareness campaign with advertising at Mahe and Praslin Airport’s International Arrivals Terminal and Domestic Departures Terminal.

Jul 11, 2013

For the second year in a row, Seychelles was awarded the Best Destination Management Award at the closing ceremony of the 2013 Routes Africa Aviation Forum that took place in Kampala, Uganda, from July 6-9.

The award was collected by the team of Seychelles delegates headed by the outgoing CEO of the Tourism Board, Elsia Grandcourt; Gilly Faure, CEO of Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority; Glynn Burridge, the board's tourism consultant and Chief Copywriter; and Amy Michel, the Seychelles Tourism Board's Senior Marketing Executive.

The Seychelles team attended the 3-day event which consisted of strategy sessions addressing some of the challenges facing the aviation and tourism industries before engaging in one-on-one meetings with representatives of Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, South African Airways, and Turkish Airlines to discuss future plans for air connectivity and collaboration.

The latest award for Best Destination Management was voted for by members of the global airline community at Routes which saw the participation of over 300 delegates at the Speke Resort, Kampala, Uganda.

"The winning of this award at Routes for the 2nd year running is a vindication of our combined efforts to market Seychelles as a tourism destination, and we are delighted to have our hard work recognized with by this prestigious award," stated Elsia Grandcourt.

The Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, Mr. Alain St.Ange, has congratulated the Tourism Board for this latest accolade. "Seychelles is today visible as never before. We know that the annual marketing strategy meeting held between the Tourism Board marketing team, our overseas Seychellois managers, and members of the tourism industry keeps us focused on the way forward and the work we are doing based on decisions at these annual meetings in keeping Seychelles relevant as a tourism destination. We have tacked our marketing with intelligence; we knew that promoting only our sun, sea, and sand will not suffice anymore as unique selling points, so we embarked into the world of events to increase visibility of our islands for the benefit of those involved in the tourism industry. Today, we can see that our chosen path is proven to be working when we look at performance of other destinations," Minister St.Ange said.

As Seychelles is winning such recognition on the world stage and as the islands’ Tourism Board is being congratulated for its work in getting Seychelles more seen, more known and more sought after, the Minister said that it was important for the country to looks at areas brought up by the tourism trade as new challenges such as the level of cleanliness of the country and the spate of insecurity being felt today.

USA - SEYCHELLES COOPERATION

US Indian Ocean station celebrates 50th anniversary reunion in the Seychelles

Jul 07, 2013

American personnel of the Indian Ocean Station in the Seychelles and their Seychellois counterparts, family, and friends were in Seychelles this week for their 50th Anniversary Reunion.

The celebration on the beach at Beau Vallon, the Golden Mile of the Seychelles, for the former personnel of the "famous golf balls" at La Misere brought friends and relatives of the American personnel together for an American-styled barbecue.

After an address by Captain Mike Hettinger, once Deputy Commander of the USA Indian Ocean Station in the Seychelles, it was Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture who was invited to address the gathering.

"Welcome back home," Minister St.Ange said to the visiting Americans who had worked and managed the Indian Ocean Station for the USA. "You lived here, you worked here, and for many years you had made Seychelles home. Today as you gather together to celebrate 50 years since this American Station was installed in Seychelles, I have the pleasure to say 'Welcome Home' to you all. Many of you had captivated the hearts of our islanders and many married them. Seychelles, like America can look back on the years of your presence in Seychelles as good years, and this is clearly demonstrated by you flying to our islands to mark this 50th anniversary with a special reunion," Minister St.Ange said.

When he addressed the party, Captain Hettinger reminded everyone of the importance of the Indian Ocean Station in Seychelles. "It was an important station helping to keep peace in the world. Situated virtually on the equator, this station tracked the American satellites and helped in the political transition of the time," Captain Hettinger said.

In the invitation letter for the reunion party at Beau Vallon, Vicky Lanza, one of the organizers writes: "This weekend, a group of Americans who had worked at the station returned to celebrate that life… and it will be an honor if you join us on the beach to meet them and listen to their tales! I was eleven years old but remember the excitement of seeing the new road at La Misere being built, the casual T-shirt that changed our way of living, the little fast sports cars and motor bikes, our family beach bungalows at Beau Vallon accommodating the first arrivals, and House No. 1 (now La Perle Noire Restaurant) being the 1st Mess Hall for the catering being done by Mrs. Eveline Mancham. The generosity of the Yankees to everyone and our people welcoming them openly and sharing our warmth and hospitality. So many stories to tell…"

Karen Pilling, a Seychelles Tourism Ambassador in the USA, was also congratulated for her work in putting this Indian Ocean Station's 50th Anniversary Reunion together.

The organizers are hoping to work on gathering pictures for a grand exhibition in the near future.

Captain Hettinger also donated a collection of pictures for the Seychelles archives as well as a short film on the setting up of the station in Seychelles.

Jul 04, 2013

The Seychelles Ministry of Tourism and Culture has confirmed that the Events List of Seychelles will from October this year have an India Day. Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, and H.E. Thanglura Darlong, the Indian High Commissioner to Seychelles, held a joint press conference to officially announce the event set for October 4 to 6 this year. The event is being held in close collaboration between the Ministry of Tourism and Culture and the Indian High Commission.

“Together with the Indian High Commissioner, we are happy to announce the Seychelles’ first India day celebrations. Seychelles celebrates through Commonwealth Day its ties with Britain. Its French heritage is celebrated through La Francophonie Day, and its ancestral bond with Africa is celebrated through FetAfrik annually on Africa Day. Who we are today is also annually celebrated through our Kreol Festival, but our historical ties with India and China remained the two missing elements on our calendar of events,” Said Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture.

Minister St.Ange said that the first India Day celebrations in Seychelles, which will take place in the heart of Victoria, will do justice to the multi-ethnic diversity of Seychelle, as it bridges Seychelles cultural bond with India.

“The flair of India will showcase Victoria, the Creole Capital of the World, to an event of food, personalities, and through the rich culture of India. For three days, the event will bring the best talents within the community to highlight a fusion of Bollywood movies and stars in captivating performances, enthralling people of all ages. An Indian exposition tracing the first Indian settlers in Seychelles until present day will also be on the program,” highlighted Minister St.Ange.

H.E. Mr. Thanglura Darlong, the Indian High Commissioner to Seychelles, said that the embassy is in the process of finalizing the program of events together with the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.

“This event will offer a place for the people of Seychelles to embrace India’s diversity of culture and for people to connect together,” Mr. Thanglura Darlong stressed.

The sponsoring of the event, according to the Indian High Commissioner and the Minister for Tourism and Culture, will be secured among the local business community who are already committing themselves to this particular event. Minister Alain St.Ange said that he has also brought the event up in discussions with the Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry to seek support through their avenues of cooperation with India.

“A strong involvement of local and Indian businesses in the sponsoring of the event is crucial for its success. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry has agreed in principle to work with the Ministry of Tourism and Culture and the Indian High Commission in making this festival a success. It is important that the business community comes out as a block in bringing a new taste in the list of events in Seychelles,” outlined Minister St.Ange.

The Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture explained that confirmation from Sri Lankan President, H.E. Me Mahinda Rajapaksa, said that SriLankan Airlines is keen to start flights to Seychelles this year which will further enrich this event and should be a big boost to this coming India Day Celebration.

“SriLankan Airlines will bring new life to the drive initiated by the Tourism Board to develop tourism from India. The first edition of India Day timely coincides with the confirmation that SriLankan Airlines will be flying to Seychelles soon,” the Minister said.

Seychelles hopes that this event will help increase visibility of Seychelles in India and in so doing increase visitor arrival numbers to Seychelles.

SEYCHELLES TOURISM ARRIVALS

Seychelles is faring better than budgeted as mid-year figures are released

Alain St.Ange, Seychelles Minister of Tourism and Culture

Jul 04, 2013

Seychelles visitor arrival statistics for week 26 for the period ending Sunday, June 30, 2013 have been issued by the Seychelles National Bureau of Statistics, and it is showing that to date Seychelles is faring better than had been budgeted.

Year-to-date figures for 2013 shows that a 14% increase over the 2012 figures have been recorded as of June 30, 2013.

"Despite all the challenges our tourism industry is facing, we are still riding a good wave. The economic difficulties in our main markets is showing no sign of redress, but the planning undertaken by the Tourism Board's Marketing Team and the Board's Overseas Offices at the annual marketing strategy meetings keeps us being proactive and intelligent in our sales and marketing actions," says Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture.

Seychelles has maintained a good level of visibility in all markets due to its strong links with press organizations and by working to get press to Seychelles during major events organized in the country. The major challenge is still to get maximum benefits from the visibility and this is to get travel agents selling Seychelles to get to know the destination once they have committed to push Seychelles. This remains a weak link in the Seychelles strategy which suffered even more since the Tourism Board loss the airline seats for travel agents previously provided by Air Seychelles from all the main markets. This point was raised only a week ago at the mid-year review meeting between the Seychelles tourism trade and the Tourism Board Marketing Team.

"We have broken into the world of events, because we knew that this would increase press coverage for Seychelles over and above providing entertainment for our people. The annual Carnaval International de Victoria continues to surpass the expected press coverage it attracts. We now have to raise the bar for the Festival Kreol, and we need to do for SUBIOS, our Festival of the Sea. Then we have to sell the events centered around our diversity of culture and promote our celebrations of the Commonwealth Day, the La Francophonie celebrations, and now the Indian Day in Seychelles, and we shall have to also promote the Chinese Spring Festival when this is finally launched. Our diversity is a unique selling point, and we need to be proud of the five source branches making the Seychellois nation we see today," Minister St.Ange said.

Today, Europe is showing a clear 12% increase over 2012 with France alone increasing by a 12 percentage point, UK by 14%, Germany by a staggering 29%. Asia is also showing signs of growth as is Africa and the Americas. "The diversification policy at the Tourism Board has worked, and the push to continue to claim our fair share from our traditional markets at the same time keeps us moving forward. We now need the private sector to look at how to increase yield from our tourism industry, and this is not and cannot be just the room rates. We need more for tourists to spend on, and this is where the private sector needs to continue to be encouraged to innovate," the Minister for Tourism and Culture said.

Minister St.Ange took this opportunity to congratulate SENPA and Kempinski Resort for working together to stage a weekly Artisanal Bazaar during the resorts’ weekly Management Cocktail for their guests. "This is a commendable initiative and more hotels and resorts should be encouraged to follow the example. The sales at such events is money entering our country from tourism. If we all get involved, we will see more benefits, and our artisans and local musicians will feel more part of the industry that remains the pillar of our economy," the Minister said.

Jul 03, 2013

The President of Sri Lanka, Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa visited the Vallee de Mai on Praslin today to experience the natural beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. President Rajapaksa was accompanied by Vice President Danny Faure and Minister Mitzy Larue and was welcomed to the Vallee de Mai by the Chairman of SIF, Mr. Loustau-Lalanne and the CEO, Dr. Frauke Fleischer-Dogley, and all of the SIF Vallee de Mai staff.

Dr. Fleischer-Dogley accompanied the President on a brief tour of the visitors center after which they spent some time in the forest. The President was keen to see where the Coco de Mer originated from as he had planted a Coco de Mer nut that morning at the Barbaron Biodiversity center on Mahe. The President had the opportunity to see both the male and female Coco de Mer trees and a staff at the Vallee de Mai demonstrated the de-husking of a giant Coco de Mer nut. Both Mr. Loustau-Lalanne and Dr Fleischer Dogley explained to the President the importance of this forest to the biodiversity of the Seychelles and why it was so unique. The President commemorated his visit by signing in the visitors book at the entrance gate to the forest. When asked if he had enjoyed his experience, the President commented that “This forest is exceptionally beautiful, and I am very impressed with the site.”

Mr. Loustau-Lalanne also shared with the President a description of the recent anti-poaching rally that was held at the Vallee de Mai to celebrate World Environment day. The President was interested and pleased that such events were being held and supported by the local community. Furthermore, Vice President Faure spoke to President Rajapaksa about the importance of environmental conservation in the long term development strategy of Seychelles:

"A clean and safe environment is the legacy we will leave for the future generations. Environmental protection will benefit us all and ensure Seychelles' status as a leader in environmental conservation. We are engaged in resolute action both at national and international levels to promote environmental protection and conservation. We put particular emphasis on education, so that our children understand that the decisions and actions we take today will impact on their lives tomorrow," said Vice-President Faure.

The President was then presented with a Coco de Mer nut and a book written by Dr. Dogley herself on the history and biology of the Coco de Mer. “We are honored to share this globally important natural world heritage site with a prominent public figure such as the President of Sri Lanka. It was a delight to host him at this unique site and we hope that our token will remind him of this experience, and the Vallee de Mai,” said Dr. Fleischer-Dogley.

Jul 02, 2013

The Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, Alain St.Ange, and the outgoing Chief Executive of the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB), Elsia Grandcourt, met with staff of the Tourism Board last Monday to announce new changes that were to take place within the organization.

Minister St.Ange, who personally chaired the staff meeting, made the official announcement of the resignation of Mrs. Elsia Grandcourt from the post of CEO of the Tourism Board and revealed that she has been nominated for a high-level position in an international organization.

Minister St.Ange congratulated Mrs. Grandcourt for this posting and said it will be a great opportunity for Seychelles. "Her work will continue to earn recognition for Seychelles in the world of tourism," Minister St.Ange said.

The Seychelles Minister championed Mrs. Grandcourt's appointment as “a proud and historic moment for Seychelles” and said “our country prides itself to see one of its professionals holding a high-level position within an international organization.”

Minister St.Ange said it was important for him to reassure all staff that it would be a smooth transition when the new CEO takes up office, and that the new person will “ensure the continuity of work being carried out by the Seychelles Tourism Board.”

“Mrs. Grandcourt and myself discussed the prospect of a Seychellois taking over this key position in the world of tourism, and we both agreed that it was a good plus for Seychelles. Today we are happy that Mrs. Grandcourt has been the company’s choice, and we wish her well,” said Minister Alain St.Ange.

Mrs. Grandcourt was appointed CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board in March 2012, and she rose to become a well-respected professional in the Seychelles tourism industry and among trade partners both locally and overseas. She inherited the art of dialogue from her Minister St.Ange, her predecessor and mentor, and was credited for maintaining confidence in the trade with her determination and hard work to see this industry move forward. Her appointment to work with an international organization reflects the way her work is perceived within the international arena and the way Seychelles is today respected as a country that is developing its own brand of tourism with success.

The Seychelles President, Mr. James Michel, later that week announced that Mrs. Sherin Naiken, formerly Principal Secretary for Tourism, will replace Mrs. Grandcourt as CEO of the Tourism Board. Her appointment takes effect July 1, 2013.

Anne Lafortune, formerly CEO of the Public Officer Ethics Commission, has been appointed as the new Principal Secretary for Tourism.

Looking forward to the new challenges of her new post, Ms. Naiken spoke of continuity in positioning Seychelles as one of the top tourism destinations in the world.

“Our tourism industry has been very dynamic over the past few years. I fully intend to uphold the same level of commitment as my predecessor and build on the success of the past to ensure the industry’s expectations are met. After all, their success will be my success,” said Ms. Naiken.

Seychelles Tourism Board has also announced that they are finalizing details for an offer to be made to Mrs. Rose-Marie Hoareau as the new Director of Marketing in September 2013. Mrs. Hoareau is the current Manager of Qatar Airways in Seychelles.

Sri Lanka President wants national airline to fly to Seychelles

Seychelles President Michel (L) greets Sri Lanka President Rajapaksa (R)

Jul 01, 2013

Seychelles President James Michel received President Mahinda Rajapaksa of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka at State House this morning. The two leaders discussed state affairs in a tete-a-tete meeting before joining a bilateral meeting, which was also attended by Vice President Danny Faure, Ministers, and other high officials from the Sri Lankan delegation.

The discussions centered on cooperation projects and agreements between Seychelles and Sri Lanka on matters of trade and investment, air links, cooperation in the banking sector, fisheries, maritime, defense, education, health, tourism, energy, legal affairs, piracy, and small industries development.

President Michel noted the importance for Seychelles and Sri Lanka to implement the blue economy concept and unlock the true potential of the Indian Ocean.

“Your Excellency, it is with immense pleasure that I welcome you and your delegation to Seychelles. Your visit here in Seychelles is a landmark of friendship and strong collaboration developing within our two countries. We have made remarkable progress in our bilateral cooperation in many areas such as in education and training, defense, trade, fisheries, health, judiciary, and renewable energy. Your visit will undoubtedly consolidate our relations and progress achieved. There is no better way to celebrate the anniversary of the 25 years of establishment of diplomatic relations between our two Indian Ocean states,” said President Michel in his remarks.

During the meeting, President Rajapaska confirmed that SriLankan Airlines are keen to start flights to Seychelles this year and that the details of these new air links will be further discussed in the near future.

President James Michel welcomed the decision, adding that the air links would boost trade and tourism between Sri Lanka and Seychelles.

“The new flights will surely open doorways for business, tourism, cooperation, and trade exchanges between Seychelles and Sri Lanka. Seychelles can become a gateway to Africa and other parts of the world. The air links will be a catalyst to ensure increased cooperation between our two countries,” said President Michel.

President Rajapaksa thanked President Michel for the warm welcome and hospitality extended to his delegation, adding: “Is it a great pleasure and honor to be here in Seychelles. Your visit to Sri Lanka in August 2012 was a landmark event in our relations. We hope for stronger cooperation and avenues for new relations in other fields as well,” remarked President Rajapaksa.

President Michel has conveyed his gratitude to President Rajapaksa for the contribution Sri Lanka is making in the Seychelles’ sphere of development. He thanked President Rajapaksa for his country’s sincerity and true friendship, adding that this state visit will give more impetus to the two countries’ relations.

“Islands have a critical role to play in reforming and developing the world’s multilateral architecture in order to build a fairer global order where all voices are heard and can benefit from this. Islands are barometers for development and are today demonstrating global leadership in addressing sustainable development challenges and are inspiring other countries across the globe to do the same. We are among the most high-risk areas, which are likely to suffer disproportionately from the negative impacts of climate change. Sri Lanka and Seychelles need to work closely together to make voices of the unheard heard. We can influence the shaping of the island countries and be an example to the world,” said President Michel.

Following their meeting, the two leaders witnessed the signing of three cooperation agreements between the government of Seychelles and the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
