Dusseldorf sends carnival royalty to Victoria — again

Feb 28, 2014

Last week the organizers of the Carnaval International de Victoria announced that delegations from Notting Hill Carnival of the UK, the carnival from Brazil, and the carnival from Indonesia were all coming to Seychelles to parade together in the carnival in Victoria. Today from Seychelles they announced that a delegation from the popular Dusseldorf carnival of Germany have confirmed that they will be participating in the April 25 Carnaval International de Victoria that is staged annually in the Seychelles. The Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands carnival is this year being jointly co-hosted by Seychelles, La Reunion, Madagascar, Mayotte, and South Africa KwaZulu Natal.

The carnival known to the press community as the only “Carnival of Carnivals” remains the only such event where all the best and most popular carnivals parade together followed by cultural troupes from the Community of Nations. Countries trying to get more visibility for their tourism industry are more and more using this carnival to remain relevant in the world of tourism through the large number of international press who fly to the Seychelles annually to cover the carnival.

Thirty-six members of Dusseldorf’s carnival will again this year be flying to Seychelles to parade in the unique and very popular tropical carnival. While the German carnival time officially ends on Ash Wednesday (March 5), the lucky ones chosen to represent Germany at this year’s Carnaval International de Victoria will have an extended season. Led by “Prince Simon I” and “Princess Rebecca Venetia,” the group will fly on tickets sponsored by Etihad Airways and Air Seychelles from their beautiful city in the picturesque Rhine Valley to Mahe to join the celebration. The delegation will include musicians from the “Swinging Funfares” group and dancers from the “Carnival Friends of the Catholic Youth.”

Two years ago, a similar group from Dusseldorf had joined the Seychelles carnival, whereas in 2011 and 2013, the dates of the carnival in Seychelles coincided with the festivities in Dusseldorf and prevented the Germans from attending.

Carnival — or Karneval, as it is spelled in German — has a tradition in Dusseldorf that dates back at least 650 years. Several carnival organizations join forces every year to assemble a Rose Monday Parade five kilometers long that includes about 60 themed floats and hundreds of revelers on foot, including marching bands. The main goal is to spread fun, mock the authorities, and satirize current events. Many of the parades are televised live on local channels, and the three largest ones — including Dusseldorf’s — are also covered on national TV, where they attract millions of viewers every year.

Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, has welcomed the official confirmation received from Germany. "We have been working closely with Dr. Herpens, the President of Dusseldorf carnival, to be sure that the carnival from Germany will be participating in the carnival in Seychelles. Edith Hunzinger, our Tourism Board Manager, from her side has been working with Dusseldorf carnival in Germany, the main source market for tourism for the Indian Ocean Islands and for Africa as a whole. The participation of Dusseldorf will help increase in Germany the visibility of every participating country and that of the region because of the German press who are also flying to Seychelles to cover the carnival," said Minister St.Ange.

Feb 28, 2014

After the visit to La Digue to open the Seychellois Owned new Cabanes des Anges Guest House last week, the Minister for Tourism and Culture, Mr. Alain St.Ange, accompanied by his Principal Secretary for Tourism, Mrs. Anne Lafortune, visited this week the Bay View Villa and the Bay View Seychelles owned by Stefan and Helga Dumont.

Helga, nee Bresson and her husband Stefan started their operation with one small eleven all ensuite room hotel, the Bay View Seychelles at Petit Barbarons. Stefan, who is an experience Chef by profession, and Helga then moved to expand into a second establishment the six all ensuite rooms. These two charming guest houses located in the tranquil district of Petit Barbarons with a splendid panoramic view overlooking the Barbarons and Anse Boileau districts are working well with a high occupancy level Helga and her husband Stefan confirmed.

The rooms of both properties all have balconies where you could sit and enjoy the natural beauty of the island. The rooms of these villas are beautifully decorated with local décor made out of wood. The wooden furniture offers the visitors a taste of the Creole and island lifestyle. Each room is tastefully decorated to give a touch of a homey environment.

The two small hotels are ideally located away from the bustling and busy city life and placed in a tranquil, peaceful and relaxing location. Each villa has a scenic look over the turquoise blue ocean.

The restaurant also with a superb view over the bay serves local dishes.

The two hotels have been enjoying high occupancy levels and they have managed to capture the new Chinese Market as well. France remains the main source market for both these small hotels. "We have been encouraged by the approach to empower Seychellois play a bigger part in their tourism industry. The drive by the Ministry is an encouragement," said Helga and Stefan.

Their ongoing successes have now prompted Helga and Stefan Dumont to move to La Digue where they are expected to open their eleven room La Digue Villa Bamboo in the coming weeks. Their La Digue Restaurant will see a new innovation for La Digue because they are preparing to use the technic of food prepared over hot rocks as their speciality.

"This is not the end we are so encouraged by the booking level and the success we have been able to achieve that we are looking at another property on Mahe," said Helga and Stefan Dumont.

Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture said after his meeting with Helda and Stefan Dumont and after having visited their two properties at Petit Barbarons that he was encouraged by the determination of the owners of the three small hotels and Guesthouses. "They have shown tenacity as Seychellois hoteliers. They have displayed the style of adding fuel to the tourism fire to ensure that it continues with a bright flame and not running down the industry and putting a wet blanket on our tourism fire. They are today reaping the benefits from the industry and have been performing so well that they now want to expand. Our country's tourism policy encourages Seychellois to be more involved because this is the only way we can claim back our industry. To Helda and Stefan we wish you continued success," Minister St.Ange said.

APRIL CARNIVAL IDEAL EVENT TO SHOWCASE PROPERTIES AND PRODUCTS

Seychelles private sector urged to use carnival for marketing

Feb 27, 2014

The Carnaval International de Victoria’s campaign has been officially launched on Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation radio station. “Lanbyans Labrin,” the station’s popular prime-time radio show, opened its microphone for a live studio interview with Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, and Sherin Naiken, the Chief Executive Officer of the Seychelles Tourism Board.

“Ole Ola en sel lavwa,” winner of this year’s song competition, opened the live radio show which stretched for well over half an hour. Referring to Minister Alain St.Ange as the man behind the carnival, Jules Hoareau, the show’s popular presenter, questioned Minister St.Ange on the concept of the 2014 edition of the carnival and on the outcome from such an event in Seychelles. Mr. Hoareau of the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation also wanted the Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture to spell out the benefits of the carnival to the Seychelles tourism industry.

Carnaval International de Victoria, said Minister St.Ange, is the biggest manifestation organized in Seychelles, and it is this event that attracts to its shore the biggest contingent of international press. “It cost the country 25-40 thousand pounds sterling to buy a publicity in glossy magazines and on foreign press. We cannot afford this amount of money to boost the visibility of Seychelles around the world. The carnival is the only card we and the region has that will today attract the largest group of international press to our shores and make our country and our region visible to the outside world and relevant in the world of tourism,” the Minister said.

In terms of measuring the added and continued benefits from the carnival, Minister St.Ange said that the Seychelles Tourism Board needed to ensure that Seychelles remains visible in the press throughout the year and not just during the period of the carnival. This is why the Tourism Board will also be showcasing the irresistible beauty of Seychelles to the visiting journalists. The Minister also reiterated that the local business community supporting and participating the carnival will this year have the chance to use the international press to showcase their products and properties.

“The Seychelles Tourism Board has been innovative in its approach to bring new elements in the carnival. This year we will use the press conference for the international press contingent to invite local businesses participating in the floats parade or those who are main sponsors of the carnival to meet the press.”

Sherin Naiken, Chief Executive Officer of Seychelles Tourism Board, said that for this 2014 edition of Carnaval International de Victoria, the Tourism Board will bring new attractions in Victoria on April 25-27. Sherin Naiken was also present in Bonzour Sesel to give an interview on the upcoming Carnival International de Victoria.

Seychelles new Carnival song 2014 is out

Feb 27, 2014

Seychelles’ new carnival song has been released two months or so leading up to carnival. “Ole Ola en sel lavwa” immediately made its debut on Seychelles radio stations after its launching on Friday, February 21. Travis Julienne, the song composer and singer, said “Ole Ola en sel lavwa” is a colorful vibration of carnival time.

“The season of carnival is the most exciting time for everyone. We wanted to break new ground with a song that brings the samba party mood in Seychelles. Though it sounds Brazilian, the song is a fusion of moutya, Zouk, and soca,” Travis explained.

Carnival International de Victoria that is staged in Seychelles annually is one of the very few events that bring people of all races, of all colors, of all religious beliefs, and of different political ideology together. The Seychelles iconic Carnaval International de Victoria propels this philosophy. Travis, said that “Ole Ola” is a universal carnival language that people of different cultures can understand.

“Music is a universal language. People coming from all corners of the world participating in this year’s carnival can join together to sing ‘Ole Ola.’ It is only through music that we can bring all nations together.”

In 2013, Travis and his team started composing the song. This year, they joined together to put the final touches to its lyric and music. It was during the launching of the Carnival Countdown, that “Ole Ola en sel lavwa” was announced as the Carnival’s song 2014. Travis was presented with his Rs35,000 cash prize by Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture. Alias DMC Tag, his DJ name on Paradise FM where he is currently working, Travis was on Tuesday, February 25, in Bonzour Sesel, the Seychelles television Big Breakfast show.

EXOTIC TOURISM EVENT

Power of nature “Krakatau Heritage” brings new dimension to Seychelles carnival

Feb 27, 2014

The “Carnival of the Carnivals” in Seychelles 2014 will be used to showcase the World Heritage Site of Mount Krakatau following its historical eruption in 1883. This eruption demonstrated the power of the Earth in creating a new mountain - Anak Krakatau - today an exotic tourism destination of the world in Lampung, Indonesia.

Located at the Straits of Sunda, Krakatau is part of Lampung Province, one among the cultural troupes of the 350 ethnics of Indonesian.

The Premier of South Lampung Regent confirms: “We are the people of carnival. We celebrate together the many cultures found in Indonesia. Through the performance of arts we also transform fashion and creative individuals of all ages to promote carnival across [the] border.” Krakatau Carnival has been held annually for the last 23 years in South Lampung, integrating culture and uniting people from all over Indonesia and its neighboring countries. Over the years, the Krakatau Carnival Festival has developed a strong brand and identity that is unique to the peoples.

The 2014 edition of the Carnival International de Victoria had been pre-launched in South Lampung during the 23rd Krakatau Festival on October 19, 2013. Nico Barito, the Special Envoy of Seychelles for ASEAN, together with the Vice Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy of Indonesia and Governor of Lampung, together with ambassadors from 25 countries, were at this festival, all wearing polo shirts reflecting the color of Seychelles flag.

Indonesia has participated in the carnival in Seychelles every year showcasing their culture and artists. The Indonesian delegation in the carnival in Seychelles has brought forward different themes each year, staging the Kalimantan Borneo Rain Forest, Sumatera Tribe, Bangka Belitung - the island beyond the rainbow, Bali Island of the Gods, and Sekar Jepun international dancers together with top artists of Indonesian talent, the 2 Faces Jc Hudson.

This year, for the 2014 Carnaval International de Victoria that is being co-hosted by the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands of Seychelles, La Reunion, Madagascar, and Mayotte and also South Africa KwaZulu Natal, Indonesia will impress the carnival that is staged with the theme of the melting pot of cultures, with the new costumes and themes inspired by Krakatau heritage, showcasing the power of nature and the splendid costumes innovated by top designers showcasing movement and vibrant traditional beats and the South Lampung “Tuping Gendong” creative pick aback moves.

Lampung has invited Seychelles to take part in the Krakatau International Carnival next May 2014. This of no doubt will be an opportunity to introduce Seychelles tourism to other island nations within the Indian Ocean region. The collaboration of Seychelles and Lampung being two destinations within the Indian Ocean will attract international tourists to witness the Anak Krakatau (the child of Krakatau) - the remnants of the ancient Mount Krakatau. Anak Krakatau is an active volcano that surfaced only in 1927 and incredibly, still continues to grow as a result of volcanic activities below the Earth’s surface.

Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, has welcome the confirmation received by Indonesia. "They have seen the merit for being at the carnival in Seychelles to showcase their country's tourism through the use of culture. Indonesia is showing that they are not shy of their culture, and in so doing their people and they are ready to continue to put these unique assets of theirs in the forefront of their marketing strategy," said Minister St.Ange.

The Minister also said that he needed to thank Mr. Nico Barito, the Seychelles Consul in Indonesia and Special Envoy of Seychelles for ASEAN, for his tireless efforts to continue to develop cooperation with Indonesia and other countries from the ASEAN bloc.

Seychelles has also moved for the past five years to put culture and the people of Seychelles as the base for the marketing of the islands. This approach was consolidated with the creation of a Ministry responsible for Tourism and Culture together.

SEYCHELLES SHOWCASES THE INDIAN OCEAN VANILLA ISLANDS

Small Island Development States conference in the Bahamas

                Feb 26, 2014

Sherin Naiken, CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board, was invited to present and be a panelist at the UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organisation) Small Islands Development States (SIDS) conference on the exotic island of the Nassau in the Bahamas to share experience on regional integration, more specifically the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands initiatives under the UNWTO theme of the conference, "Tourism as a key sector for development in the island states."

The conference which addressed a whole range of relevant issues for island destinations such as the competitiveness and sustainability, regional integration, air connectivity, travel facilitation and risk management also had with aim to build upon the conclusions of the “Conference on Sustainable Development of Tourism in Islands” held in Reunion Island in September 2013. The recommendations from the conference also intended to serve as a guidance to National Tourism Authorities and the international community as an input to the Third International Conference on SIDS, scheduled to convene in September 2014 in Samoa also as a follow up to the Rio +20 conference.

Ms Naiken spoke about the spirit of working with neighbouring countries to put the region in the forefront and increase the attractiveness of the region collectively as leading tourism destinations.
"there are more for us to benefit by focusing on our commonalities and similarities rather than differences" she continued "we all stand to benefit indirectly when we promote our region."

She also explains of how it is important to know each others strength and know what complements the various destinations "the Indian Ocean islands, despite being all islands states with lots of similarities, we are blessed by the diversity of our landscape, and to certain extent our people and cuisines"

In her intervention Ms Naiken also explained how jointly the various countries are organising various activities to jointly promote each other, of which she gave example for Seychelles the Carnival Internationale de Victoria which Seychelles has declared their Vanilla Islands event. The event which this year is scheduled for 25-27 April, is a prime opportunity to showcase the region to the huge network of media and press which visits the islands for the occasion.

Other initiatives she highlighted were the fact that as a region they can now come together and negotiate with airlines for inter island connectivity, look at potential markets collectively which they would otherwise not ventured on their own amongst a handful others.

Ms Naiken also attended a closed session with the Ministers of Tourism, Transport and Airline Executives who were present to discuss air connectivity issues.

Seychelles Port Authority keeps tourism trade partners informed of new development

                Feb 26, 2014

The Seychelles Hospitality and Tourism Association (SHTA) requested updates of the facilities at the Mahe, Praslin and La Digue Quay and Jetty at their last meting with Alain St.Ange, the Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture. Last week, Mr John Stravens, the Chairman of the SHTA and representatives from the Industry's Association accompanied Minister St.Ange, PS for Tourism Anne Lafortune and Sinha Levkovic of the Tourism Department for a meeting with Lieutenant Colonel Andre Ciseaux, the Chief Executive Officer of the Seychelles Port Authority.

Lieutenant Colonel Andre Ciseaux and members of his Management Team met with tourism trade partners to give an oversight of proposed infrastructure development for their Mahe Inter Island Quay, the Baie St Anne Praslin Quay and Jetty and also the La Digue Jetty. In a small presentation at Seychelles Port Authority’s Head quarters, Lieutenant Colonel Andre Ciseaux, the Chief Executive Officer of the Seychelles Port Authority explained that a proposed plan for maritime tourism related development at the Mahe Inter Island Quay has already been submitted to Planning Authority for approval. He said one key elements of the plan is the construction of a dedicated passenger common area. The proposed shed will allow passengers boarding at the Mahe Inter Island Quay to have a sitting area. It will also include a rest room, common area for Destination Management Companies (DMC) and a collecting point for arrival luggages. Commenting on the proposed development project for Mahe Inter Island Quay, Alain St.Ange, the Minister for Tourism and Culture said “the pick-up area for luggage will curb down on congestion and chaos at the port. The dedicated pick up area for luggage is a much needed facility at the Inter Island Quay“ Minister St.Ange said.

The Mahe Inter Island Quay project is seen by the tourism trade as being urgent especially now that recently a passenger fell into the sea at the luggage collection point. A representative of the main ferry company company, the Inter Island Boats - Cat Coco said that their vessel unloaded about 4 tonnes of luggage on its daily trip. The much awaited dedicated area for passengers to pick up luggage will solve the existing problem of passengers having to collect their luggage right at the ferry on the edge of the jetty itself. Mr Ciseaux re-assured trade partners present for the presentation that upon approval of the proposed plan, the project to build the passenger shed will be put on tender. Members of the Tourism Trade implored that the Planning Authority appreciate the constraints that the tourism industry were being faced with and therefore the need to have this project submitted since last year by the Port Authority approved.

SEYCHELLES TOURIST EVENT

Seychelles Carnival Countdown begins

Feb 24, 2014

The clock is set for the coming Seychelles Carnival. It was with the back drop of La Plaine St. Andre, one of the Seychelles most spectacular colonial houses, that Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, declared open the Carnival 2014 Countdown. Minister St.Ange said carnival time is just around the corner.

“Seychelles Carnaval International de Victoria is arriving again. It is moving as a fast train. Seychelles and the world is in for a good surprise,” said Minister St.Ange.

This fourth edition of Carnaval International de Victoria is seeing for the first time Air Seychelles/Etihad as its partner airline. Minister St.Ange thanked Air Seychelles for its partnerships and for the committed contributions towards the success of this year’s edition of the event that is now known as the unique “Carnival of Carnivals.”

“Without your support, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture and Seychelles Tourism Board will not be able to stage this important event. If we are here, it’s because we have companies like you who believed in what we are doing,” the Minister said.

In the presence of many friends of the carnival, sponsors, artists, and performers, Minister St.Ange said that if Seychelles wanted such an event like the carnival, it needs committed partners standing alongside the Seychelles Tourism Board and Ministry of Tourism and Culture. He also used the opportunity to urge the local business community to prepare their own carnival floats that will showcase their businesses to Seychelles and to the world.

“My appeal to the local trade is to use the carnival as a platform to showcase yourself. The carnival will again this year bring the biggest media bank ever onto the shores of the Seychelles - use their presence here to showcase your businesses to the world,” Minister Alain St.Ange said.

This year, the Seychelles Tourism Board has been working with many of the known and respected media houses to ensure adequate coverage of the event called the “Carnival of Carnivals.” The Tourism Board has confirmed that journalists from all corners of the world and in the region will descend on Seychelles to capture the strong moment of the three-day carnival party. It is also confirmed that carnival delegations, and those who call themselves cardinal revelers who follow these events everywhere, have confirmed their presence in Seychelles. "The list of confirmed delegations coming to the carnival is long. All the best and most known carnivals will be parading together aging this year, and cultural troupes from countries wanting to promote their countries using their culture and in so doing their people are confirming their presence as well. Minister St.Ange said more countries from the Community of Nations are set to confirm in the coming days that they are also sending their cultural troupe to the carnival in Seychelles to increase their visibility as a tourism destination.”

The Minister also reiterated on the growing partnership the Carnaval International de Victoria has built with the Community of Nations.

“The participation from mainland Africa has grown. We will have many of the countries promoting the Big Five concept in this carnival. South Africa is making its first presence count in this festival as a co-host country. With South Africa onboard, the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands of La Reunion, Madagascar, Mayotte, and Seychelles now have a solid partner maligning us, all ready to drive the carnival wagon forward,” the Minister said.

Nathalie Didon, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Tourism Board, has emphasized the important carnival delegations converging to Seychelles to mark this 2014 edition of the event. She thanked the sponsors who have committed themselves to this year’s Carnaval International de Victoria and the dedication of the staff of the Seychelles Tourism Board who are working endlessly to put the carnival together.

Third position went to KJ and Extra with the song “Carnaval narive,” second position went to George Payet with “Carnaval ile vanilla,” and Travis Julienne walked away with the first prize of R35,000 with his song “Ole Ola, en sel lavwa.”

“Seychelles islands – another world” at Bride Abu Dhabi

                Feb 24, 2014

The Seychelles made news again this month when they were featured in an important event, Bride Abu Dhabi, and where the stand attracted a great number of visitors.

Bride Abu Dhabi, an addition to Bride Dubai, offers the opportunity to capture potential honeymooners, brides-to-be, and leisure visitors to the Seychelles islands. This 4-day event was held at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre from Wednesday, February 12 to Saturday, February 15, 2014.

It is one of the most important consumer events there in the weddings and honeymoon segment, and this year the event hosted over 250 local, regional, and international exhibitors all looking to tap into the ever-growing Middle East market.

After participating in Bride Abu Dhabi for the past 4 years, the Seychelles Tourism Board, in collaboration with its partners, Air Seychelles Ltd., 7 o South, and Mason’s Travel, took the opportunity to be a silver sponsor of this glamorous event.

With a heritage spanning 11 years and with over 16,000 visitors, Bride Abu Dhabi continues to remain at the forefront of the consumer mind for bridal, beauty, and fashion trends in the Middle East. It is an annual event not only for Emirati ladies and their families to come together to plan everything related to one of the most celebrated events in one’s life – the wedding - but also a great number of expatriates who are looking for the perfect wedding and honeymoon destination.

With over 30,000 nuptials taking place every year, and the cost of wedding parties ranging between AED50,000 to AED500,000, the UAE is a high-yield market for the destination. The Seychelles Tourism Board, together with its partners, will continue to push for visibility of the islands in this market with the aim of gaining a fair share of this fast-growing outbound travel market in the world.

Bride Abu Dhabi was, therefore, the perfect platform to increase “the Seychelles islands - another world” brand awareness. The brand was featured on the outdoor billboards along various streets and roads in Abu Dhabi, and the official show catalogue had a full page advert, leaflets, and personalized invitation to the show as well as prior and after each fashion show (28 shows in total).

These are cost-effective ways for the Seychelles Tourism Board to create brand awareness among its target audience, who is specifically looking for options for their honeymoons, weddings, and holidays.

A raffle draw was held on the last day of the event and local partners Air Seychelles Ltd. and the two destination management companies (7 o South and Mason’s Travel) generously gave two business class tickets, accommodation at the Banyan Tree Seychelles, transfers, and a tour around the island to the lucky winner.

The Seychelles Tourism Board is looking forward to participating in an even bigger event next year.

Seychelles Tourism Academy set to give French equal standing

                Feb 23, 2014

The Seychelles Tourism Academy, undergoing a fundamental transformation with phase one of the reconstruction of the institute going on schedule and due for its launch in a few months time, has committed itself to give French as the medium of instruction in classes equal priority with English, it was learned over the weekend.

Emphasis for a while was on the use of English to improve proficiency of the use of this global language but bilingual instructions are now coming back into focus again after a meeting between the academy management and the French Ambassador during the week.

France is a key overseas market for the Seychelles and with the country having three official languages, Creole, spoken widely in the day to day live of the Seychellois, English and French, equitable distribution especially at the Tourism Academy is thought to be important to promote the full command of both.

The academy’s new language laboratory, when open, will also offer courses in German, Italian, Spanish and if correctly remembered Chinese as a new optional language, a smart move considering the increase in visitors from China over the past three years.

The Seychelles Tourism Academy is partnering with Shannon University College for degree programmes in hospitality and tourism management and has also signed agreements with hotel schools in Shanghai, Muscat and Malta, and when the second phase of reconstruction is complete will undoubtedly claim a top spot among Africa’s hotel and tourism training academies in terms of academic performance and courses offered, while it is already the most scenic such institute anywhere in Africa with a setting in La Misere, overlooking the shores of the Indian Ocean from high up in the hills more befitting to a billionaire’s residence than a hotel school.

Already are some foreign students taking courses at STA and when complete a significantly larger number of students from other Indian Ocean islands but also from the African mainland are expected to come to the Seychelles Tourism Academy to study in certificate, diploma and degree courses.

Carnival of Carnivals in the Seychelles receives confirmation that Notting Hill Carnival of the UK will again be present with new costumes from five costumed groups

The Notting Hill Carnival Roadshow Company of the UK will again be at the Carnaval International de Victoria in Seychelles, the carnival now referred to by the International Press as the Carnival of Carnivals. The news has been well received by Seychelles where their annual carnival attracts all the best and most popular carnivals to parade together and followed by cultural troupes from the Community of Nations.

The Carnaval International de Victoria brings countries together and gives a rare opportunity to tourism destinations participating with a cultural troupe to raise their profile through culture and in so doing through their people. International Press continue to fly to the Seychelles in great numbers to cover this unique carnival that is staged annually under the theme of the ,melting pot of cultures'.

The Notting Hill Carnival Roadshow Company is a collection of Carnival artists from the United Kingdom who are central to the staging of the annual Notting Hill Carnival, the largest carnival in Europe. Some of those who founded the very first Notting Hill Carnival in 1964 still participate in the Roadshow as it moves from town to town and across borders, uniting and integrating people through the medium of the carnival celebration.

"Over the years, the Notting Hill Carnival has developed a strong brand and identity that is unique in that not only does it reflect the many cultures found in the UK, but through the performance of its arts, it continues to make a statement that each person has a right and responsibility to celebrate carnival that celebrates and commemorates the rights and freedoms fought for by our ancestors. In terms of beauty, creativity, innovation and performance each year we aim to surpass previous standards and make an impression and meaningful contribution to the development of Carnaval International de Victoria, Seychelles which provides an unique and enriching experience for all participants by promoting carnival across borders" the representative of the Notting Hill Carnival Roadshow Company of the UK said.

HAMBURG TOURISM FAIR OF GERMANY

Visual artists make their mark in the marketing of Seychelles

Feb 22, 2014

Two of the well-known creative artists of Seychelles, Jude Ally and Egbert Marday, this week presented Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, with a painting done as they were participating at the 2014 edition of the Hamburg Tourism Fair of Germany.

Jude Ally, the Seychellois abstract artist, and Egbert Marday, the known visual artist, were invited along with a group of Seychellois musicians and dancers to showcase the Seychelles culture in the week-long “Hamburg Tourism Fair,” which opened on February 4. Egbert Marday explained they were invited by the Seychelles Tourism Board to participate in the fair to promote visual art paintings.

“We brought to the fair a collection of 15 paintings. The idea was to use our paintings to allow visitors to explore Seychelles’ artistic techniques. We were planning to organize painting classes on the theme of “Seychelles Discovery” for children visiting the stand, but it was difficult to do so, because visitors kept changing on a daily basis,” outlined Egbert Marday upon his return home.

Egbert Marday said that they still managed to drive a large crowd of children to the Seychelles stands, captivated by seeing them painting in the pavilion.

“We distributed painting materials to the children, and they painted their own vision of Seychelles. It was also a great opportunity for the Tourism Board Staff to sell a lot of Seychelles holiday packages,” a thrilled Egbert Marday said.

According to Egbert Marday, the painting presented to Minister Alain St.Ange was painted in the Hamburg Tourism Fair itself. "We both painted this canvas as we were inspired by a destination poster displayed in the Seychelles stand. Together with Jude Ally, we’ve merged our visual arts technique to reproduce this poster, even with sponsors listed on it. The end product turned out to be a painting of mix-media technique,” said Egbert Marday. Alain St.Ange, Minister for Tourism and Culture, thanked Jude Ally and Egbert Marday for this “great painting” which he said will be put in Seychelles record of destination materials.

"But I also want to thank both Jude and Egbert for joining the tourism department in promoting Seychelles. Culture and people are two important ingredients of our marketing approach. What you are producing has a unique Seychelles DNA, and this no one else can claim or copy. You have joined the bandwagon to move Seychelles forward and for this I thank you," Minister St.Ange said.

Reunion Island names former Miss Reunion and Marie Payet as MCs for Seychelles Carnival

Feb 20, 2014

La Reunion Island, one of the main co-hosts for the April “Carnival of Carnivals” that is staged annually in the Seychelles has named Marie Payet as their Master of Ceremony for the coming 2014 Carnival International de Victoria. As a main co-host, La Reunion will be playing a key part in all the main events of that unique carnival that continues to attract international press to these mid-ocean islands to cover the event that they have themselves dubbed the one and only “Carnival of Carnivals.”

With international press now getting ready for their trip to the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands region, the continued interest for the press in this carnival is because this event in the Seychelles, that is this year being jointly co-hosted by the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands of the Seychelles, La Reunion, Madagascar, and Mayotte, and also South Africa KwaZulu Natal, remains the only carnival where all the best and most popular carnivals of the world parade together in an explosion of color, costume, and culture. They are then followed by cultural troupes from the Community of Nations. This carnival is like a tourism trade fair for countries seriously promoting tourism as an economic industry because of the visibility participating delegations get as they fly their flag and as they showcase their country through their culture and people. International press has said over the last couple of years that countries at this carnival in Seychelles have a much better opportunity to showcase their unique selling points as a tourism destination, because it is their people and it is their culture appealing for press attention instead of colorful brochures and a drink at a promotional cocktail.

President Didier Robert, the President of the Regional Council of La Reunion, has been working hard to reposition his island of La Reunion in the world of tourism as a destination at par with Mauritius, the Seychelles, Maldives, and more. President Robert said that he needed to break the dependence of Metropolitan France for tourists to La Reunion. Today his approach is seen to be working, and he has shown that his administration had the tenacity to drive through a new tourism vision that is rattling some from France Metropole. President Didier Robert overseas the portfolio for tourism, and he has personally been working side by side with Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, at different world forums and on different tourism bodies. Together they also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for continued cooperation between their two islands. This renewed cooperation as co-hosts of the annual carnival of carnivals will see more in the development of the concept of Indian Ocean Islands working with each other to increase the visibility of the whole Indian Ocean region where France administers La Reunion Island itself and also Mayotte.

Last week Seychelles named Michelle Marengo, singer and artist in her own right, as the MC for the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 edition of the carnival who will be addressing in the island's Creole language. The announcement was made as the Seychelles was seeing final touches put together for the official Opening Ceremony of the carnival that takes place in Victoria, the capital of the Seychelles, on April 25.

It was also confirmed that South Africa had now named the famous and popular Angelique Gerber as their MC who will be addressing the official opening ceremony in the English language. Angelique Gerber is a well-known South African actress and presenter on South-African television, and she is also a known film star. The Vanilla Island of La Reunion has now named Marie Payet who will be representing their island as MC and who will be addressing the opening ceremony of the carnival in the French language.

The beautiful Marie Payet is a former Miss Reunion and also a popular singer. As an artist she is today well known in La Reunion, and she aspires through the Vanilla Islands organization to break into the region. Marie has been to Seychelles before and led the La Reunion delegation to one of the last carnivals.

Guinea Ambassador to Seychelles calls on Minister for Tourism

                Feb 18, 2014

H.E. Mrs. Fatoumata Kaba, the new Ambassador of the Republic of Guinea who was in Seychelles to present her credentials to the island's President Michel, made time to pay a courtesy call on the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, Mr. Alain St.Ange.

The Minister received H.E. Fatoumata Kaba at his offices at the National Cultural Centre in Victoria in the presence of Mrs. Anne Lafortune, his PS for Tourism.

Discussions centered on cooperation between the Republic of Guinea and the Seychelles on tourism and also culture. Minister St.Ange took the opportunity of the meeting to thank Guinea for all the assistance offered to Seychelles and invited them to be present in the coming Carnival International de Victoria.

Minister St.Ange said, "I really hope that your Minister responsible for Tourism could personally lead a small cultural troupe from Guinea to be at the April Carnival.”

The carnival in Seychelles remains unique in many ways. The best and most popular carnivals of the world come together in Seychelles and all parade side by side followed by cultural troupes from the Community of Nations. Today the Carnaval International de Victoria is known by the international media houses as the “Carnival of Carnivals,” because of the togetherness by all carnivals coming together once a year for this event in Seychelles.

Many tourism destinations also use this carnival for promoting their own tourism industry. "It is like a tourism trade fair, but here, it is the country's culture and in so doing the people of the respective countries who are being put forward instead of brochures and cocktails. It is today accepted that participating countries at the carnival in the Seychelles have more access to international press than they can ever have at any tourism trade fair," Minister Alain St.Ange said to Ambassador Fatoumata Kaba.

"Every country participates at tourism trade fairs as a PR exercise and to try to raise the visibility of their destination. The carnival in Seychelles offers to participating tourism destinations exactly this opportunity and even more. The large bank of international press present to cover the unique ‘Carnival of Carnivals’ event can be approached to report on the destination through their culture and better still through the people of the different countries. It is today accepted that distributing colorful brochures is one thing, but putting feeling in marketing of the destination by showcasing the people and culture of the country goes much further than any cocktail or brochure handout events," the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, Mr. Alain St.Ange, said.

"This is why we have invited countries to join the carnival in Seychelles and to fly their flag as they mark their presence in front of the international press who will be in Seychelles for the 2014 edition of the ‘Carnival of carnivals,’" Minister St.Ange said.

As a result, the girls taking part in the “Miss Seychelles… Another World” pageant will be immediately at the forefront of promoting the Carnaval International de Victoria and other events featured on the calendar of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture and of the Tourism Board.

Culture and Miss Seychelles 2014 top Seychelles tourism promotion

                Feb 16, 2014

The twelve finalists for the “Miss Seychelles… another world” beauty pageant have been announced by Sherin Naiken, the CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board. Seychelles moved from just promoting itself as a sun, sea, and sand tourism destination when President James Michel, who was then personally holding the portfolio for tourism, moved to put the people of the islands at the center of tourism development of the Seychelles and to make the mid-ocean islands an events-based destination.

The Tourism Board has since then taken on the new approach. "In placing our people in the center of our tourism development, we now have a unique marketing base with our very own DNA, and this is our culture," said a representative of the Tourism Board.

One of the events that is now organized annually by the Tourism Board is the “Miss Seychelles… another world” beauty pageant. "We cannot be seen promoting anyone else but our very own beauty queens," said the Tourism Board representative.

Camila Estico, Lisa Rose, Elmina Savy, Marvel Godley, Anabelle Pointe, Stephanie Duval, Christa Joubert, Michaella Rosette, Melissa Pool, Raphaela Dugasse, Ronda Sidonie, and Florella Cedras are the twelve finalists for the 2014 beauty pageant set for May 31, and one of these young Seychelloise will become the islands’ ambassador for the year 2014 and attend tourism trade fairs with the Tourism Board.

Tourism remains very much a people’s industry, and showcasing “Miss Seychelles… another world” as part of tourism promotion exercises will keep people and culture in its rightful place as key ingredients in the islands’ economy.

Distributing colorful brochures is one thing, but putting feeling in marketing of the destination by showcasing the people and culture of the country goes much further than any cocktail or brochure handout events," said Minister St.Ange.

The Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture invited countries to join the carnival in Seychelles and to fly their flag as they mark their presence in front of the international press who will be in Seychelles for the 2014 edition of the “carnival of carnivals.”

Seychelles Tourism Minister says Praslin must claim back its tourism industry

                Feb 13, 2014

Mr. Marco Francis, the Chairman of the Seychelles Chamber of Commerce and Industry, accompanied by his councilors this morning met with Minister Alain St.Ange, the Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, at his offices at the National Cultural Centre in Victoria. The Minister who was accompanied by Anne Lafortune, the PS for Tourism heard from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, discussed points they wanted to follow-up on following their recent meeting at Praslin.

Minister Alain St.Ange welcomed the delegation from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and said that he appreciated the time they took to make this meeting possible. "We run our Ministry with an open door policy, and every day we welcome individuals or association representatives who need the support of our Ministry in one way or another," Minister St.Ange said.

Mr. Marco Francis, the Chairman of the Seychelles Chamber of Commerce and Industry, used the meeting to raise the points that has been brought up at the recent Chamber meeting on the island of Praslin. It was pointed out that at the Le Relax Hotel meeting at Grand Anse Praslin, points relating to illegal boat charters, vertical integration, yacht charters, and illegal taxi operators had been raised. After lengthy discussions, it was resolved that the Chamber would be officially writing to the relevant government ministries concerned to seek support to address these points seen as hampering the good running of the tourism industry at Praslin. Other general points raised were the welcoming of tourists from Africa, air access from Europe, especially for the months when Emirates would be in operation with one daily flight instead of twelve weekly flights, and the widening of the base used to calculate the yield from tourism.

Minister St.Ange, who shared the Chamber’s approach of distribution of wealth in the country, said that the points raised were not only interesting, but also important if they wanted Seychelles to claim back its tourism industry. "We are all united in our desire to help people do business, but for this to happen we need to be guided by the laws of the land, and here it is often a matter of enforcement of the laws already in place. The rules of enforcement must be clear as we look at ways and means to address the various points raised. The illegal boat charter concern at Praslin keeps coming up, and it is destroying the genuine charter business at Praslin, I am sure that the SMSA and the Ministry responsible for Transport will take up this matter as it is the need to see passengers on charter yachts check-in their guests as is done by hotels. They are in one way or another a floating hotel and should be providing authorities with passenger details as and when required," Minister St.Ange said.

On the question of vertical integration, Minister St.Ange informed the representatives from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry that a report is due to be submitted in the coming weeks to the government following a series of inter-ministerial discussions on the matter.

The Chairman and Chamber Councilors present thanked Minister Alain St.Ange for his time availability.

Five years of Four Seasons Resort Seychelles

                Feb 13, 2014

A week of staff activities at Four Seasons Resort Seychelles grew to a crescendo last weekend with events to mark the anniversary of the opening of the resort on the Seychelles on 6th February 2009.

The day began with fun, games and lots of sugar, as fourteen 5-year-old children from the local Baie Lazare Primary School visited in the morning. The kids played and learned with time at the Pti Torti (Little Tortoises) clubhouse with the team from Kids For All Season Kids Club by singing, dancing, meeting the team of tortoises, and taking part in marine education activities with conservation partner, WiseOceans. Afterwards, awe and wonder met the children's faces when confronted by a room almost entirely covered in chocolate and candy, as they explored the Chocolate Room. After taking a tour, they set to work decorating muffins with chocolate decoration.

The afternoon was the turn of the wonderful team to be recognised. The 64 staff who had been employed since pre-opening enjoyed afternoon tea, before receiving 5-year certificates and gifts, presented by the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, Mr Alain St.Ange, a cake-cutting and group photograph.

Speaking to the five year staff, Mr Alex Porteous, the Resort's General Manager said, "It is thanks to your passion and dedication that the Resort in the success it is today. You were the trailblazers. You set the standard for all your colleagues who came after you. You all welcomed new members of the team, as well as guests, demonstrating to each of them the Four Season Golden Rule: treat others as you wish to be treated. We have come a long way since February 6th 2009. In recent times we have seen incredible accolades, with awards and recognition from bodies such as Forbes, Conde Nast Traveller, and Tripadvisor in just the past 12 months, all of which are testament to the hard work, commitment and talent of all of you."

Minister Alain St.Ange, who was accompanied by Anne Lafortune, the PS for Tourism to the presentation of certificates said when he addressed the staff present that staff retention remains key to the success of the management team in place. "A third of the total staff of Four Seasons Resort Seychelles have been here since opening day in 2009. You have become the backbone of the resort and should feel proud of the recognition of your resort as the top in the Four Seasons Group. The Ministry of Tourism and Culture and the Seychelles Tourism Board will continue to work closely with you all, as we do with every licensed tourism establishment. Let us be united in our determination to keep the tourism industry of Seychelles on the firm footing it his on. Congratulations to the 64 of you for your fifth birthday at the resort" Minister St.Ange said.

Sherin Naiken, the CEO of the Tourism Board then joined the Minister for Tourism and Culture and partners in the Seychelles Tourism industry and friends of the Resort, including local artists, politicians, conservationists, as well as Four Seasons Managers, and the two Employees of the Year, Sara Victor and Jeffrey Antat for the a sunset cocktail. Front Office Supervisor Alvin took to the microphone as MC for the evening and raffle prizes were drawn with exciting Four Seasons experiences up for grabs. The evening drew to a close with a paper lantern release on Petite Anse beach.

Four Seasons Resort Seychelles opened its doors in 2009 with 184 employees and, five years on, 64 of those employees are still employed at the Resort. Amongst this group, 32 of them have been promoted to Supervisory and Managerial positions.

Over the years, several initiatives to develop employees have been implemented with great success at the Four Seasons Resort Seychelles. Supervisors at the resort go through a 12 weeks training program called STEPS (Supervisory Skills Development). They have brought in Learning Coaches (one per department) who trains and induct new hires in their department. The Learning Coaches are paid an incentive once the new hires pass their probation whereas Superior Performers (around 10% of each department's staff, who consistently and go above and beyond expectations at work) are paid an allowance of 5% of their basic salary. Employees at the Four Seasons Resort Seychelles also enjoy many benefits and privileges including complimentary stays in over 90 Four Seasons Resorts around the world, birthday meals at the resort's outlet with a partner, plus employee parties three times a year.

Minister St.Ange said as he and PS Lafortune left the resort at 10.30 pm after having joined the staff award ceremony since three in the afternoon that he was happy to have been able to join the Resort's Management and Staff for their day of celebrations. "The one to one discussions with many of the staff as well as the opportunity to spend time with different members of the Management Team was good. This was quality time that went beyond meetings. I ended the time at the resort with their Fisherman's Dinner Buffet and must say thatI needed to compliment the Chefs on duty for the choice and for their Thursday Nights Market Place Display. A great initiative where many local products are used" Minister St.Ange said.

Airtel becomes 'Seychelles Music Awards' key partner

Feb 12, 2014

The Telecommunication Company, Airtel, has become the main sponsor of Seychelles Music Awards after pledging a five year sponsorship of the event.

An agreement to formalise the long term sponsorship was signed at the National Cultural Centre in Victoria in the presence of Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture by Mr Vikram Sinha, the Country Manager for the Seychelles Bharti Airtel and Mr Terry Carolla, the Producer of the Seychelles Music Awards.

At the Signing Ceremony Minister Alain St.Ange thanked Airtel for becoming a genuine partner of Seychelles Music Awards.

“You’ve come on board as a genuine partner for culture. This drive you’ve undertaken is putting culture in the forefront. A music award will only help our young and older artists to be recognised” Minister St.Ange said.

The Minister said Airtel’s support for this award demonstrates the company’s seriousness for what is today called social responsibility to the community.

“Social responsibility is now the norm where people that makes money out of society, must also see ways that they can give back to society. You’ve chosen the cultural approach which pleases the Ministry of Tourism and Culture. It is so important for the country to see a way forward for its performing artists, and this is what you are doing” the Minister said.

Minister Alain St.Ange also took the opportunity to salute Mr Terry Carolla, the Producer of Music Awards Seychelles for his determination to make the music award the project expected of it by the country.

“I think it is important for me to congratulate Mr Carolla for not only having an idea, but seeing his idea through. When he coined the idea of Seychelles Music Awards everybody probably said, can we really achieve this” Minister St.Ange said.

For the past two years, Airtel Seychelles has been working closely with the Ministry of Tourism and Culture and have been active sponsor of culture and tourism events.

“I strongly believe that working with culture and tourism is the way forward in Seychelles, because I believe that these two sectors are pivotal for the country's economy. It is our continued desire to commit to the youth of Seychelles, either through music or sports. We want to commit on a long term basis” Mr Vikram of Airtel Seychelles said.

Mr Vikram went on to state that Airtel is committed to now bring Seychelles artists on to the African music chart.

“We have a music award in Africa. We want to see that our artists from Seychelles reach the African chart. That is the commitment between Mr Carolla and I with the support of the Culture Department. I am personally confident that we will be able to do what’s right for the country” Mr Vikram said.

Terry Carolla, Producer Seychelles Music Award thanked Airtel for being a faithful partner of the event, promising that the sponsorship will be put to great use in developing the music industry in Seychelles.

The Seychelles Trading Companie ( STC), Seychelles Breweries and Yamaha were some of the other sponsors who also came forward to present their support during the signing of partnership agreement between Airtel and Seychelles Music Awards.

Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture who was accompanied at this signing ceremony by Anne Lafortune, the PS for Tourism, Benjamine Rose, the PS for Culture and Sherin Naiken, the CEO of the Tourism Board said to the press that he appreciated the ongoing support by Airtel Seychelles for tourism and cultural events and that the country as a whole needed today to appreciate the partners who are standing with the Ministry.

Tourism industry sees visitor length of stays in Seychelles reach new record

Feb 12, 2014

The average length of stay of tourists in Seychelles rose over last year's numbers.

Length of stay jumped up to 10.9 days in January 2014. According to the Seychelles National Bureau of Statistics, visitors coming to Seychelles during the month of January 2014 increased to 5% compared to January 2013. Seychelles recorded the highest level in length of stay of 11.8 days in August 2010.

The Seychelles National Statistics Bureau figures also show that out of 16,521 visitors who arrived in Seychelles during the month of January 2014, 2,317 were from Russia. The figures represent an increase of 32% on the Russian market compared to the same period in 2013. France, the Seychelles leading market, has been pushed to second position with an average of 2,216 visitors for the month of January 2014. It is to be noted that visitors coming from Russia traditionally land in Seychelles during their annual winter months.

Seychelles also witnessed in January 2014 a boom in the number of visitors coming from China. China not solely showed positive growth but took the third position in January 2014 as one of the Seychelles leading source markets. With the opening up of Chinese routes and aggressive market packages from Destination Management Companies to grasp a fair share of the market, the number of visitors from China increased to 2086 in January 2014, representing an increase of 65% compared to January 2013.

Seychelles Tourism Board’s China Manager described this growth as encouraging. Germany, Italy, and South Africa also listed among Seychelles’ six leading markets in January 2014 are also showing positive growth. Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture, congratulated the Tourism Board for the remarkable growth of the island’s six leading source markets. "It is clear that decisions you continue to take when you meet for your end-of-year Marketing Meeting with the private sector trade is bringing good returns. Your work is often not seen except when visitor arrival numbers increase and when more pages in tour operators’ programs are featuring Seychelles products. You have to continue to keep Seychelles visible in the four corners of the world, and you have to continue to ensure that Seychelles remains a relevant tourism destination. Together we have been doing this well so far, but we need to continue along on our set course as per discussions between ourselves and our private sector partners," Minister St.Ange said.

With this positive growth in visitor arrivals for January 2014 coupled with an increase in visitor length of stays, the Seychelles Ministry of Tourism and Culture says that the tourism of Seychelles remains on a firm footing.

It is interesting to highlight that Seychelles as a destination has aroused a lot of interest in recent years. This interest is translating to bookings - for example, during the month of January 16,521tourists landed in Seychelles, compared to 12,799 in the same month in 2008. This trend is seen by the islands as very encouraging especially when many other destinations are not enjoying such a performance. For the Seychelles, visitor arrival numbers must be looked at with the island's population. The Seychelles is today receiving more than three times more visitors per year than its total population and close to five times its total local workforce. "This is an achievement for any country, but over and above these comparative figures, tourism remains the pillar of the Seychelles economy," Minister Alain St.Ange said.

In January 2008, the average length of stay in Seychelles was 9.5 days for the month of January. By 2010, this had increased to 11.4 days only to drop to 10 days by 2013. For January of 2014, it was back up to 10.9 days. The short holiday breaks with the number of flights landing in Seychelles daily works against long average length of stay. The increase of Chinese holiday makers with three to five day stops in Seychelles will also impact on this figure, but the Tourism Board believes that it remains to have the rooms sold at a good rate than is their preoccupation over just length of stay. The emergence of new attractive packages offered by Destination Management Companies is considered as an important part in changing the pattern and increasing visitor length of stays for this January 2014.

The Tourism Board is now working to see how to have more dedicated airline seats for Seychelles out of the islands main source markets in a bid to better assist tour operator partners sell Seychelles.

Sweden and Seychelles officials discuss participation of Sami people at carnival

Feb 11, 2014

Mrs. Kerstin Brunnberg, the Chairman of the Swedish Arts Council, has met with Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, to discuss a possible delegation of the Sami people traveling to the Seychelles for the 2014 edition of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands Carnival. The meeting that took place at the Official Closing Dinner for the celebrations of Umea of Sweden becoming the Cultural Capital of Europe was the opportunity for Minister St.Ange of the Seychelles to make the case for Sweden to showcase the Sami people. This meeting took place in the presence of Mr. Lennart Swenson, the Honorary Consul of the Seychelles in Sweden.

"What a better year for Sweden to play this cultural card than 2014 when their city of Umea has been crowned the Cultural Capital of Europe," Minister St.Ange of Seychelles said to the gathered press in Umea.

The annual Carnaval International de Victoria that is today known throughout the world as the unique “carnival of carnivals,” remains the only event that brings together all the best and most known carnivals to parade together followed by cultural troupes from the Community of Nations. This carnival is also the event where indigenous people of any country or region can be showcased to show the multi-ethnicity of different countries.

The invitation by Minister St.Ange to Mrs. Brunnberg to bring a delegation of the Sami people to the 2014 edition of the annual Carnaval International de Victoria that is staged in Seychelles from March 25-27 is now being considered by Sweden.

New level of dialogue on what we call cultural tourism

                Feb 10, 2014

Seychelles seems to have coined something interesting and innovative. “We have now reached a new level of dialogue on what we call cultural tourism,” said Seychelles Minister Alain St.Ange, as he commented on a recent conversation between his country and Sweden.

Mrs. Dace Melbarde, the Culture Minister of Latvia, and Mr. Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister of Tourism and Culture, made time to meet and open a new level of dialogue between themselves when they were both in UMEA in Sweden for the ceremony marking that city’s new title as the Cultural Capital of Europe.

Ministers Dace Melbarde and Alain St.Ange discussed cooperation in the field of culture and also Latvia’s participating in the coming Indian Ocean Vanilla Island’s Carnival that is set to be held from April 25-27.

"The ball is in our court. We have to follow-up with an official letter of invitation. But a first step has been made," Seychelles Minister St.Ange said.

The carnival that is staged in Seychelles is very much like a tourism trade fair but with culture and the people of respective countries put forward. Countries spend a fortune to be seen at the traditional tourism trade fairs, but apart from dishing out promotional brochures, their access to more visibility through media is limited. It has been seen ruing the past years that participating countries at the carnival in Seychelles get access to more media than ever possible at any tourism trade fair. Culture is also a novel idea with which to promote the tourism industry of countries.

The Seychelles 2014 edition of the carnival is being co-hosted by the Vanilla Islands of La Reunion, Madagascar, Mayotte, and South Africa KwaZulu Natal tourism bodies.

PRIVATE SECTOR RALLYING TO BE PRESENT TO PROMOTE TOURISM THROUGH CULTURE

Mauritius government says no to presence at Indian Ocean carnival in Seychelles

                Feb 09, 2014

The Ministry of Culture of Mauritius is saying that it will not be participating at the 2014 edition of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands Carnival that takes place in the Seychelles at the end of April. Minister M. Choonee, it is believed, will be writing to his Seychellois counterpart to say that Mauritius will not be present. This breaking news was published in the L'Express Newspaper of Mauritius during the weekend.

This news has again prompted the island's tourism private sector to open fresh dialogue on them being present to promote tourism through culture and in so doing putting Mauritian artists in the forefront. "This approach by the private sector will be a slap in the face of true MTPA of Mauritius," said a hotel personality of the island.

"The whole world is using this carnival to fly their flag and increase the visibility of their destination in front of the large number of international media," said another hotel GM.

The big debate in Mauritius is now for the island's private sector trade to bypass their MTPA and move by themselves. Many believe that if they can pull this off, the MTPA will be sidelined for good as they take more marketing initiative by themselves.

A Mauritius artist said on his part that they are waiting for this initiative to be taken. "We often feel that our island is ashamed to be associated with local artists. We see Miss England being pushed but not Miss Mauritius. We believe that no country has the right to be ashamed of their people, and this is why we salute the private sector of Mauritius to try to bring us to the carnival in Seychelles," the artist who is believed to be working on a carnival song said.

Interfaith Council of Seychelles holds meeting with Tourism Minister

                Feb 07, 2014

The Seychelles Interfaith Council (SIFCO) held a meeting with Minister Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture. The meeting which was held at the National Cultural Centre and was attended on the SIFCO side by Bishop Denis Wiehe, Bishop French Chang-Him, Mr. Robert Moumou, Mr. Pravin Darad, Mrs. Homa Muengapen, Iman Heneka, and Mr. Port-Louis. The Minister on his side was accompanied by Benjamine Rose, the PS for Culture and Anne Lafortune, the PS for Tourism.

The meeting followed the meeting between the SIFCO Managing Committee with Minister Vincent Meriton where discussion among other issues touched on the coming Carnaval International de Victoria.

Minister St.Ange welcomed the SIFCO members and said that he appreciated the time taken by SIFCO members to meet to discuss areas of concern for the religious body. "We manage the ministry with an open door policy and welcome such meeting as and when it is required. We also salute the work of SIFCO, you are displaying for the world at large to see that Religious Harmony is real in Seychelles. In this troubled world, this show of unity is great," Minister St.Ange said.

The Minister and his delegation listened to the points raised by members of SIFCO and said that he appreciated the discussions. He said that for this coming carnival the Family Fun Day of the Sunday will see this year the introduction of a Children's Carnival. "We are aware that we need to develop our carnival culture to reflect our Seychellois Creole way of Life. This children's carnival will help our younger generation embrace the event through showcasing all what is dear for us as a people," the Minister said.

The annual Carnaval International de Victoria will this year be staged from April 25-27, and Minister St.Ange said that all indications is that it will be even bigger and better that the 2013 edition. "This carnival of ours is the single biggest event our country stages. It is the only event that brings well one half of our population to Victoria. It is important that we all work together to make it the success our Seychelles expects it to be," Minister Alain St.Ange said.

Seychelles determined to grow Irish travel market

                Feb 05, 2014

Seychelles is all out this year to turn Ireland into a more profitable market and increase visitor figures from there by 40% by the end of 2014.

The Seychelles Tourist Office for UK and Ireland this year started its promotion on this market on a strong note, attending two fairs in one weekend – Holiday World Show and Bride of the Year Show – in addition to a series of sales calls.

2014 is set to be a great year for Irish travelers with more than 30 new routes available by air, increasing Ireland’s overall air capacity by 5-10%. Etihad and Emirates have also confirmed that they will be increasing flights – double daily out of Dublin – providing more capacity and choice to the traveler wishing to head to the Seychelles.

The Seychelles Tourist Office’s Regional Manager for UK and Ireland, Tinaz Wadia, led the Seychelles’ delegation at the Holiday World Show and said there was notable interest for more affordable holidays as more Irish are keen to travel abroad.

“The show was a big success for Seychelles, considering that it was our second participation there, and Seychelles always comes across as one of the most exciting destinations on the market,” she said, adding that albeit small, this promising market has already shown its potential with a 33% increase from 2012 to 2013.

“We hope with major efforts being put into the market, the increase will reflect an even bigger number in 2014. I’m pleased to say that our annual road-show in UK will this year make a stop-over in Dublin,” she stated.

Ms. Wadia was accompanied at the Holiday World Show by Marketing Executive Maria Morel. Also in attendance was Ash Behari from the Coco de Mer Hotel on Praslin.

Major tour operators such as Trailfinders, Travel Mood, Sunway, and Cassidy Travel were present at the fair and also promoting the Seychelles through various offers and packages with their respective booking stations, for immediate booking processes and pricing.

Pat Dawson, Chief Executive of the Irish Travel Agents Association, has described the Holiday Show as a fantastic event for travel agents and consumers alike.

“The economic downturn has made it difficult for many to afford holidays the last couple of years, but our members have showcased unbeatable holiday offers at the Holiday World Show. Irish travel agents at the show are focusing on quality and affordability as well as dispensing invaluable destination advice. Recent market research has indicated that one in two Irish adults will take a foreign holiday in 2014,” he said.

Celebrating its 25th year of making holidaymakers’ dreams come true, the show is considered a one-stop shop of inspiration, advice, and spectacular offers to broaden the horizons of those seeking their ideal break in 2014.

Seychelles presence as tourism partner country with Hamburg Travel Fair receives much publicity

                Feb 05, 2014

The sought-after tourism destination of the Seychelles is this year the Official Partner of the Hamburg Travel Fair of Germany. This opportunity has been grabbed by Alain St.Ange, the island's Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture, who traveled to Hamburg accompanied by Sherin Naiken, the CEO of the Seychelles Tourism Board, and Bernadette Willemin, their Board's Paris Based Director for Europe. The Seychelles delegation was also joined by Edith Hunzinger, the Manager of the Seychelles Frankfurt Office, and Christine Vel, the Senior Marketing Executive of the Seychelles Tourism Board, who is also based in Paris.

Max Hunzinger, the Seychelles Honorary Consul in Frankfurt, was also present in Hamburg to assist with protocol matters and to facilitate as much as possible the official appointments for the Seychelles delegation.

Minister St.Ange of the Seychelles was greeted by Bernd Aufderheide, the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Hamburg Messe und Congress, and addressed with him the Hamburg Tourism Fair pre-opening press conference. “This is a great opportunity for Seychelles. It will go a long way to help keep our beautiful islands visible and relevant as the favorite holiday destination for Germans," Minister St.Ange said. “Die Welt” is one of the print media present at this press conference which was followed by a photo opportunity at the Seychelles stand at the fairgrounds where a cultural troupe from the islands was performing as two visual artists showed off their works of art depicting Seychelles culture.

“Die Welt” remains one of the very influential German newspapers that is read nationally and internationally. In their article that followed the Hamburg Tourism Fair press conference, “Die Welt” emphasizes the points made by the Seychelles Minister on the question of affordability of the Seychelles and on the efforts being made by the government of the islands to promote the home grown smaller tourism accommodation establishments. “Die Welt” also reported on the environment policy of the Seychelles which is aimed at preservation at all costs, and where over 50% of the island's total land area has today been declared nature parks.

Northern Germany’s number 1 tourism show takes place on the fairgrounds of Germany’s second-largest city from February 5-9, 2014.

The Seychelles Minister, who gave several television and written press interviews after the press conference, highlighted that Germany was a key tourism market for the tropical islands of the Seychelles. "Germany is today our second most important tourism market and it is growing by the day,” he said.

SEYCHELLES-CHINA DAY CELEBRATIONS TOURISM EVENT

Foundation stone laid for new Chinese pagoda in Seychelles

Feb 04, 2014

The foundation stone for a new Chinese pagoda was laid on Saturday, February 1, to mark the first edition of the Seychelles-China Day Celebrations.

The original Chinese pagoda which was built early in 1900 contributed much to preserve and to maintain Chinese tradition in Seychelles.

Originally built as a place of worship, the Chinese pagoda on Benezet Street of Victoria represents the Chinese influence in the development of the Seychelles authentic and diverse culture.

In six months’ time, a new Chinese Pagoda will be built at the exact birthplace of the original pagoda.

The new Pagoda will house a restaurant, cultural center, worship hall, and other recreational facilities.

Charlie Ng Ping Cheun, the Chairman of Seychelles Chinese Association, said that the association has more than half of the funds to build the new pagoda. He appealed to the Chinese community to rally behind this project.

“With the laying of the foundation stone, we hope that we will be celebrating our next New Year here,” the Association's Chairman said.

It was Shi Zhongjun, Chinese Ambassador to Seychelles, and Charlie Ng Ping Cheun, Chairman of Seychelles Chinese Association, who laid the foundation stone for the new pagoda.

The ceremony was witnessed by Vincent Meriton, the Minister for Social Affairs, Community Development and Sports.

Minister Meriton congratulated the Chinese Embassy and the Seychelles Chinese Association for laying the foundation stone for the new pagoda.

“As we lay the foundation stone for a new Chinese pagoda, we honor and recognize the part played by our Chinese ancestors in this modern and vibrant Seychelles, from the food we enjoy so much, to the goods that were brought to our shores by the Chinese merchants and traders, to the introduction of the credit system “karnen” as we call it in Creole, to a strong entrepreneurial spirit, and also to the inculcation of being strongly disciplined at work. Today, we have much to be proud of in the inheritance from our Chinese descendants.”

Ambassador Shi outlined that the “laying of the foundation stone shows the great enthusiasm that Seychellois of Chinese descent have for their origin and routes.”

INDIAN OCEAN VANILLA ISLANDS TOURISM WITHOUT MAURITIUS?

Mauritius tourism industry under scrutiny from all corners

                Feb 04, 2014

One of the most read newspapers in Mauritius started the week with a article on tourism entitled "Tourism: Mauritius is overtaken by the region".

Editor Karen Walter of the newspaper presented the state of affairs of the Mauritian Tourism Industry. This article comes as the Ministry of Tourism is getting ready to seek the Government's approval to move the island out of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands. Will that also mean that the Indian Ocean Commission (COI) and the Indian Ocean Rim )(IOR) will be asked to move their Headquarters out of Mauritius a Hotel General Manager asked.

"We have lost it completely. We built an airport to become the hub of the Indian Ocean, then we do not want to work with the Indian Ocean" another small Mauritian Hotel Owner said. Both the COI and IOR are regional organisations where the island's Anil Gayan, their Minister for Foreign Affairs speaks with a loud voice. Another Tourism Industry professional of Mauritius asked what Regional Cooperation can Mauritius speak about when Mootoosamy of the MTPA is pushing for isolation.

The L'Express Newspaper stated that now the Russian Media are set for the first time to cover the Carnival International de Victoria that will be taking place in Seychelles this coming April. This, as Mauritius still cannot decide if it is to be present at this regional event with all the other islands of the region or not. But is was Mauritius that was in the leadership under a former Minister of Tourism to form the Vanilla Islands to reposition the Indian Ocean as a tourism destination. L'Express Newspaper of Mauritius says that this was the aim of the Vanilla Islands and today Countries such as Madagascar, South Africa and Sri Lanka amongst others are looking at benefiting form the spirit of togetherness of the region, Mauritius is playing the lone ranger all alone, and their participation at the Carnaval International de Victoria in the Seychelles this year still remains undecided.

La Reunion, Mayotte, Madagascar…are all Vanilla Island members wanting to join with the Seychelles and South Africa to organise the next Carnaval International de Victoria that is set for the month of April. Even Sri Lanka is showing interest to be associated with this new drive in the Indian Ocean. This is what Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister for Tourism and Culture says.

But an unanswered question remains, Mauritius that has been noticeably absent from past events of the Vanilla Islands, will they yet again be marked as absent at this coming event in Seychelles?

L'Express Newspaper of Mauritius says that it is exactly this absence by Mauritius at events aimed at consolidation regional tourism that is so much regretted by Alain St.Ange, who is also the President of the Vanilla Islands. Karen Walter of the L'Express Newspaper confirms that she interviewed Minister St.Ange of the Seychelles by telephone last Wednesday where he said that the Vanilla Islands Organisztion aims to reposition the Indian Ocean Region as a key tourism destination.

The Seychelles Minister also said that this cannot be achieved without unity and that Mauritius needed to be more involved in regional events. "If we are not working together as a united group our region will not be what it could succeed to be and it is our people from our respective islands who suffer as a result. Mauritius tourism must decide what it wants for itself and for the people of Mauritius" the Minister is quotes as having said.

Nando Bodha, the former Minister responsible for Tourism of Mauritius agrees with the Seychelles Minister. Former Minister Bodha was one of those who launched the Vanilla Islands concept in 2010. "Mauritius is missing out on a rare opportunity" former Minister Bodha of Mauritius said. It is reported in the L'Express Newspaper that former Minister Bodha of Mauritius went on to say that Mauritius as a country had lost "the leadership and the motivation it used to enjoy to make the Indian Ocean the centre for tourism".

Karl Braunecker, the Managing Director of Connections, a Destination Management Company of Mauritius takes, according to L'Express Newspaper a different twist to the Mauritius regional saga. Even-though he says that he remains convinced that Mauritius must be present at the carnival in Seychelles as this would bring benefits for Mauritius. Mr Braunecker said that it was not a world event that will make the major difference in the island's records "I am supporting a Vanilla Islands Carnival on a regional basis that is held each year in a different islands" he said.

'Mauritius is well positioned to become the aviation hub of the region. But we need to double our efforts in the promotion of twin destinations (Africa-Mauritius) on the Asia and Australia markets' Mr Braunecker said. This approach is supported by Alain St.Ange "Twin centre destinations remains a formula that works and attracts the Japanese, Chinese and South Americans. But for now the Seychelles strategy is to work to remain visible. This is the reason why the Seychellois hoteliers recorded a Bumper Year in 2013 with 230272 arrivals and USD 343,3 millions. An increase of 11% over 2012" Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister said.

Karen Walter of the l'Express Newspaper said that they had tried in vain to get a reaction from Minister Michael Sik Yuen, the Minister of Tourism of Mauritius.

Le Meridien Fisherman’s Cove in Seychelles to host inaugural Chaine de Rotisseurs dinner

                Feb 04, 2014

Good culinary news reached overnight from Victoria, the capital of the Seychelles, confirming the arrival of the global Chaine de Rotisseurs on the archipelago.

It is understood that the Le Meridien Fisherman’s Cove in Bel Ombre was selected to host the very first dinner the group’s local members will be able to celebrate on the evening of February 21, promising a night of delicious food and exquisite wines as is customary on such occasions, when the host venue’s chefs will be pulling out all stops to create a perfect menu.

This latest development is significant for the Seychelles as it opens additional avenues of cooperation with other countries where the Chaine de Rotisseurs have been established, from bilateral chef guest appearances to regional competitions for young chefs from which in particular the Seychelles can benefit to advance skills and creativity among their upcoming local chefs. Local chapters of the Chaine de Rotisseurs exist for instance in Kenya and Tanzania, the Seychelles’ nearest mainland neighbors, where the news will no doubt meet with great interest.

Bon Appetite will no doubt be in order on the 21st when the culinary who’s who and the Seychelles tourism gurus will assemble in Bel Ombre at the Le Meridien Fisherman’s Cove.

In his address, Minister St.Ange thanked the local travel industry, media, and consumers for their support in turning 2013 into yet another record year for Seychelles from the German-speaking source market. He also talked about the many efforts undertaken by the Seychelles to not only maintain, but to also enhance the destination’s attractiveness for overseas tourist by pursuing a far-sighted policy of sustainable tourism that benefits both visitors and the local population in the short and long term. “This policy seems to be paying off now, and this we know through the encouraging words of appreciation that we continue to receive from our visitors,” Minister St.Ange said.

After the press conference, Mr. St.Ange gave an interview for German television and attended a luncheon hosted by the fair’s management, where he was able to elaborate further on the Seychelles and answer questions arising from his statements made at the press conference.

More than 80,000 consumers are expected to visit. This year visitors to the tourism fair will be entertained at the Seychelles stand and on an adjacent stage by dancers and musicians from the Seychelles islands. They will also enjoy playful interaction with two Seychellois popular creative artists, Egbert Marday and Jude Adeline.

The affluent region surrounding Germany’s largest seaport is a key market for the Seychelles. Last year, 33,489 Germans visited the country, which constitutes an increase of another 19 percent over the previous (record) year. Another 14,000 visitors originate from the mostly German-speaking countries of Austria and Switzerland, which are also managed from the Tourism Board’s Frankfurt office.

NEWEST TOURISM EVENT IN SEYCHELLES

First Seychelles-China Day Celebrations complete circle of culture

                Feb 02, 2014

Berjaya Beau Vallon Resort, referred to as a hot spot for Chinese holiday makers, was transformed on January 31 into a riot of red colors to welcome the first edition of the Seychelles-China Day Celebrations and Chinese New Year.

The official opening of the Seychelles-China Day Celebrations was a night of pulsating rhythms of lion dancers, an artistic show by the Shanghai Jinshan Art group, and a wide array of Chinese food, and was arguably described as a thrilling success.

Officially opening the festival, Pierre Laporte, the Minister responsible for Finance, Trade and Investment, replacing Alain St.Ange, the Minister for Tourism and Culture, who is on an official mission overseas, said that this festival is set to become an annual event in Seychelles.

“We sincerely hope that this festival will grow and become a major annual festive event to showcase all aspects of Chinese culture, which will enable the people of Seychelles – especially those with Chinese ancestry - to learn and appreciate all that China has to offer in the field of cultural exchange programs. This will enable us to finally recognize our Chinese roots and ancestral connections,” Pierre Laporte, the Minister for Finance, Trade and Investment, said.

Minister Laporte went on to say that the Seychelles Ministry of Tourism and Culture has over the past several years, organized festivals that encourage the people of Seychelles to recognize and to re-connect with the country’s ethnic and cultural origins. He said that the Seychelles-China Day Celebrations completed the “firm circle of friends with the five nations who make up Seychelles’ cultural and ethnic origins.”

“This being the semaine de la Francophonie, FetAfrik, Commonwealth Day, Seychelles-India Day Celebrations, and now the Seychelles-China Day Celebrations, which we are launching for the first time today, all of which finally complete the firm circle of friends, with the five nations who make up our cultural and ethnic origins and which culminates in what we are celebrated in our Festival Kreol every October.”

The first Chinese immigrants arrived in Seychelles around 1886, and since then their descendants and other new immigrants are fully integrated.

The Seychelles-China Day Celebrations was conceptualized six months ago by Minister Alain St.Ange and Shi Zhongjun, the Ambassador to People’s Republic of China, to give due recognition to the Chinese community, the last branch of Seychelles origins not yet being celebrated. Benjamine Rose, the Principal Secretary of Culture, in her opening remarks said that the Culture Department now ensures that the full circle of Seychelles origins is recognized.

“The Culture Department ensures that we give due recognition to all our forefathers. We are a multicultural nation, and our descendants came mainly from France, Africa, England, India, and China. These celebrations enable us to celebrate what we are today through our annual October Festival Kreol,” Benjamine Rose, the Principal Secretary for Culture, said.

Ambassador Shi Zhogjun on his part gave his blessing to the Seychelles-China Day Celebrations. The opening night of the Seychelles-China Day Celebrations was also marked by a lottery draw and prize giving of the Seychelles-China Day Celebrations photo competition.

The Blue Economy: Key to Africa’s vision for the future

                Feb 01, 2014

The African Union has expressed its commitment to embracing and developing the Blue Economy concept as a vital part of Africa's future development to be outlined in the AU's Agenda 2063.

This pledge followed an intervention by Seychelles Vice President Danny Faure at the 22nd Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where he called on the continent to use its Agenda 2063 to "break the mold" of African development and recognize the potential of Africa's Blue Economy:

"The Blue Economy, encapsulating all of the potential of our oceanic resources, offers us a platform for Africa's transformation both in terms of Agenda 2063 and in terms of the post 2015 Development Agenda and the sustainable development goals.

"The majority of world trade is by sea. The majority of the world's oil shipments are by sea. There is no food security without a sustainable ocean. The majority of new mineral resources will not be found on land but in the sea. The Blue Economy is Africa's future."

In responding to the Vice President, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, announced that an entire chapter of the Agenda 2063 would be dedicated to the Blue Economy concept.

Dr Dlamini-Zuma, who was represented at the Seychelles Blue Economy Summit in Abu Dhabi earlier this month, added that exploiting and developing the full potential of Africa's oceanic resources, particularly as Africa's oceanic mass is far greater than its land mass, was a vital part of its future.

The Vice President is currently leading the Seychelles delegation to the African Union Summit being held from January 30-31, the theme of which is the Year of Agriculture and Food Security for Africa.

Speaking to the theme of the Summit, the Vice President said he was pleased at its selection, as it is also an issue of great importance to Africa's islands that also supports the need for greater maritime connectivity on the continent:

"Food security is a critical issue for islands as we are simultaneously limited in the amount of food we can produce ourselves due to our small size, while also being isolated from key markets in terms of imports."

The Vice President is also accompanied by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jean-Paul Adam; the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Barry Faure; the Seychelles Permanent Representative to the African Union and Resident Ambassador to Ethiopia, Ambassador Joseph Nourrice; and Principal Secretary for the Vice-President's Secretariat, Mrs. Jeanne Simeon.

Seychelles welcomes Madagascar back to SADC and AU family

                Feb 01, 2014

Seychelles Vice President Danny Faure has congratulated the people and newly-elected President of Madagascar, Mr. Hery Rajaonarimampianina, and the organizations of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) for bringing an end to the crisis in Madagascar through the realization of credible, democratic elections.

Speaking at the Extraordinary Summit of the SADC Heads of State held today in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in the margins of the 22nd Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, the Vice President applauded the efforts of SADC in their support of the successful elections held in Madagascar and welcomed the re-admission of the Indian Ocean island state to the SADC family:

"The elections which took place in Madagascar with the support of SADC, the AU, the Indian Ocean Commission, and many other partners are the most transparent in the history of Madagascar and represent the will of the people to move beyond the crisis and to a new era of development.

"I had the honor of representing [Seychelles] President James Michel at the inauguration ceremony in Antanarivo on January 25, and we congratulate you [President Hery Rajaonarimampianina] on your message of inclusion, solidarity, and determination to bring development to the Malagasy people who have suffered immeasurably during the crisis."

The Vice President also thanked the SADC Organ Troika on Peace, Defense and Security, for their unrelenting efforts in bringing an end to the crisis and said that Seychelles was proud of their role in the peace process both through SADC and through the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC).

In addition, Vice President Faure welcomed the African Union decision to lift sanctions on Madagascar, previously imposed for unconstitutional changes in government, and welcomed them back as an active member of the organization.

It should be recalled that President James Michel hosted two rounds of mediation talks together with South African President Jacob Zuma, then Chair of the SADC Organ Troika on Peace, Defense and Security, as part of the roadmap that led to the elections, notably the Desroches process held in July 2012.

The Seychelles government also seconded Ambassador Claude Morel to Antananarivo as Head of the IOC Liaison Office to support efforts to bring an end to the crisis and realize credible democratic elections.

Vice President Danny Faure was accompanied by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jean-Paul Adam; the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Barry Faure; and the Seychelles Permanent Representative to the African Union and Resident Ambassador to Ethiopia, Ambassador Joseph Nourrice.
